LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT, Kerry Spence Greetings Everyone! I hope this finds you enjoying 2019 thus far. Many of you are probably resting from Denver, preparing for the Classic and upcoming sale season. Before I get too much further into this letter, I want to thank Kyle & Kayla Helms again for all that they have done the last several years for this association. They left some big shoes to fill! Already I have found myself relying on them for guidance. I appreciate all that they have done and continue to do as I step into this new role. To start I’m pleased to announce some new and exciting changes

with the association. During our November board conference call, we decided to change our association dues to a flat rate of $100. Breeders who paid their dues prior to this conversation will have their 2020 dues adjusted accordingly. We believe this change will help eliminate confusion for all parties involved. Also, starting in 2020 we will increase out-of-state dues from $50 to $100. In the future, all membership invoices will be sent out in October and due back in November. The board also agreed that as an
association we need to increase our social functions. One suggestion to get us started was to bring back our state tour. At this point, we are still in discussion on where the 2019 tour will take place and plan to announce more details this spring. If you are interested in being part of the tour, please contact a board member. Our recent board conference call meeting left me feeling optimistic towards the future of this association. With so many new thoughts and ideas being shared, there is no doubt that (Cont-pg5)

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT (Continued) our association will continue to grow and improve. It has been inspiring to see so many members stepping up to get involved. I am beyond thrilled that I get to be a part of it. I realize that I have taken for granted all that GAIN has to offer. Growing up and being part of the Junior association gave me some of my favorite memories and taught me some important life lessons. It’s made me truly aware of all the time and hard work my Dad gave to give me these memories and life lessons. It’s important that we
continue to pass our belief and passion of the Gelbvieh breed throughout the association and with its new members. The Gelbvieh breed is and continues to become a leading breed with so much to offer breeding and commercial producers alike. In closing I want to express my gratitude to all the members of the association especially the board members. Everyone has really come together and embraced our new thoughts and ideas. Thank you to everyone who wrote an article, sent a picture,
or shared an idea to help put together this year’s roundup. With that being said, I want to draw your attention to the Cattlemen’s Classic Must See section of this issue. You can find it on pages 16-19. Check out what will be showcased this February. These breeders are going to make the 2019 Cattlemen’s Classic a great show and sale. Mark February 21st on your calendars! I look forward to seeing all of you in Kearney and upcoming sales! ~Kerry Spence, GAIN President

2018 Husker Harvest Days Farm Progress' Husker Harvest Days is the nation's largest, totally irrigated working farm show. With more than 500 exhibitors, the show provides farmers and ranchers direct access to company representatives and allows the opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge about the latest products and services available. Gelbvieh Association In Nebraska (GAIN) members had live cattle exhibits on display for farmers and ranchers from over 30 states, and several countries that attend Husker Harvest Days. The American Gelbvieh Association’s support at events like this reflect the association’s commitment for the future of the breed. While it might not be public knowledge, the Gelbvieh live cattle display location being a corner lot is envied by larger breed associations. Lori Kuker with Squeakin’ By – LK Farms has brought cattle on display over the past two years and feels that is an been an excellent way to broaden their customer base as an up and coming breeder. “Displaying cattle at Husker Harvest Days is a great opportunity for the breed and for the breeder. It has allowed us to get Gelbvieh/Balancer cattle in front of people who might not otherwise be introduced to them and to explain the benefits of the breed”, says Kuker. GAIN sponsored three speakers that touched on various industry topics.
By Collaboration of GAIN Board Members
The speakers and topics included: Kristian Rennert with Loomix/QLF focusing on the importance of proper nutrition; Tom Strahm with the American Gelbvieh Association that expounded on the future of the AGA and BOLT technology EPDs, and Heather Richards with Medicine Valley Vet covering embryo work and proper vaccination programs. The education sector of the display allows you and fellow breeders a great opportunity for networking with other breeders and industry leaders to learn what has worked for them and what they have witnessed in the livestock sector. A shout out and congratulations go to the outfits that had live cattle and product displays: Taubenheim Gelbvieh (Amherst, NE), Squeakin’ By – LK Farms (Shubert, NE), Schawang Cattle Co. (David City, NE) and Flying H Genetics (Arapahoe, NE). We appreciate the support that members and breeders that are unable to bring cattle still come to visit the display and be apart of the camaraderie and commitment to the Gelbvieh genetics. 2019 is a new year full of opportunities so it’s time to get this event on your calendar. Come join us for the 42nd Annual Husker Harvest Days at its permanent site located near Grand Island, NE September 10-12, 2019!! We hope to see you there. If you have any questions about attending HHD or bringing a live display, please reach out to your GAIN directors.

GAIN MEETING MINUTES, Submitted by Gina Welsh, Secretary The Gelbvieh Association In Nebraska had a board conference call on November 26, 2018 at 5:00pm. It was called to order after everyone joined the call. Gina Welsh went over the Treasurer’s report and informed everyone the accounts are located at South Central State Bank. Lori Kuker moved to approve the Treasurer’s report, Cody Steinkruger seconded. Motion carried. Gina Welsh updated the board on the happenings with EDJE. She contacted them and discussed what needs to happen in order to get the domain name from them for our website. It sounds like a simple operation. Lori Kuker moved to do our own website and take the website management from EDJE. Cory Voss Seconded. Motion passed. Kerry Spence updated the board on the progress with the Roundup. Kerry & Gina have contacted Leslie Smith for a mailing list. At the time of the call, we had not received anything. The thoughts of the board were to create a new mailing list. The ideas thrown around were to put something in the Roundup to be added to the mailing list, contact AGA for the Profit Picture mailing list. Dan Warner suggested having members send an excel file to one of us to compile a new mailing list. Dan also suggested that we get the first issue out and then get list together. Cory Voss moved to make a new list. Lori Kuker seconded. Motion carried. The discussion was held regarding the ads for the Roundup. The invoices need to be sent out in a timely manner. They need to be sent out early February. With the Roundup’s facelift we discussed the new features. The Cattlemen’s Classic Must See section. Gina suggested a price of $25 to put pictures and information in if the operation is placing another ad in the Roundup and $50 if they do not place another ad. We would like to have a Featured Family in each issue. This year we have chosen Barwick’s. Articles. We will get articles from AGA and ask Madalynn to write an article. Gina asked the board members for pictures for the Roundup. Dan suggested asking AGA. The idea was brought up about having a Nebraska Heifer Sale again. Cory Voss thinks it will be a 2 year process. Dan suggested hiring a manager to keep everyone on schedule and organized. Dan also said it takes a lot of patience to pull off but it is possible. The thought was that the state association was a lot stronger when we had that event. Dan also thinks in order to have a successful sale we could ask for a verbal commitment from every member to bring one head. The thought was also shared that we could do a heifer futurity on both the classic and the sale. The Heifer Futurity was discussed because there were some board members that didn’t quite understand how the futurity worked. It was suggested to document the rules in the Roundup. After going through the member list for GAIN, it was apparent the dues schedule was confusing for quite a few people. Gina brought up changing the dues schedule. Cory Voss reported that Nebraskans pay the same dues as Kansans to join the Kansas Association. Lori moved to change GAIN’s dues to $100 flat, Kerry seconded. Motion carried. Kerry brought up that it was brought to her attention that members are wanting to have more social activities throughout the year. It was suggested that we check out where socials are held. One item would be the tour held in the summer. Cory made a comment that there were a lot of people that attended the last one in 2008 or 2009. It was brought up that maybe a field day is better so there are one or two operations close together. And it was mentioned that being on the field day is good for smaller breeders who don’t have a sale. Cory Voss motioned to adjourn, Lori Kuker seconded. Motion carried. GAIN Roundup 2019

THE FAKE MEAT PHENOMENON by Madalynn Welsh By 2050, the agriculture industry will be responsible for feeding 9 billion people, this is according to an article written by John Parker in the February 2011 edition of the Economist. As the population grows, producers across the globe are finding ways to grow greater quantities of food with lower amounts of resources. Agriculturists utilize technology such as drones—which enable farmers to analyze their fields on a day to day basis; precision agriculture—a system in which crop growers can apply the exact amount of nutrients needed for different sections of the field; GMO’s—which allow agriculturists to grow more with less; and advanced animal reproductive sciences—processes that give producers options in order to choose superior genetics for their operation. By utilizing all of these concepts, our industry is able to achieve highest efficiency possible. People in the agriculture sector are faced with problems such as government restrictions, public backlash, and the most prevalent: Lab-grown meat companies. Supplemental meat companies are destroying the beef industry’s credibility in order to market their own product, but as cattlemen, we cannot let this happen to our industry. Lab grown meat companies pose a threat to the success of the beef industry as a whole; furthermore, we have worked to build an excellent reputation. As beef producers, it is our passion to humanely raise safe, high quality beef that the public can buy with confidence. For generations, the beef industry has been building a brand. We have been slowly gaining the public’s trust, with millions of dollars in research, advertising, and education. Producers and researchers across the nation have worked tirelessly to create safety precautions and humane animal handling processes, both down to an exact science. Dr. Temple Grandin, an animal science professor at Colorado State University, is credited with developing safe and effective ways to handle livestock. One of her studies, published in 2016 in the International Journal of Livestock Production, found that in lower stress environments, cattle produce higher quality beef than cattle that are handled in high-stress situations. Through her work, producers across the globe are now using more humane methods of animal-handling while producing better quality beef. Due to pioneers like Dr. Grandin, the beef industry has developed safer, more efficient ways to handle cattle. Dr. Grandin’s research is just one example of how the beef industry has used science to back processes and build a credible reputation. The reputation the beef industry upholds hasn’t come easy, by any means; it has taken dedication, innovation, and hard work from many. This reputation could all be demolished by fallacious data being spread by artificial meat companies. “Clean” meat companies are spewing information regarding traditional beef production in order to market their product; however, these “facts” are easily debunked. According to the Beyond Meat company: “51% of greenhouse gas emissions are driven by livestock.” When the official website of the United States Environmental Protection Agency reports that in 2016 the entire agriculture industry accounted for 9% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Clean meat companies also claim that to produce one pound of beef it takes 1,799 gallons of water and 38 pounds of feed. When the Beef Cattle Research Council states that it takes about 8 gallons of water and about 10.6 pounds of feed to produce one pound of edible beef. An article written by Shannon Durham and issued by the United States Department of Agriculture discusses that through the use of feed technology strategies such as supplementation in order to fulfill nutrient requirements, cattlemen are able to use less resources to generate a larger product quantity. Another way the beef industry utilizes feed technology is by using FDA approved hormone implants. These implants are used on steers and make up for hormone production lost to castration. (Continued on Page 33) GAIN Roundup 2019
31
32
THE FAKE MEAT PHENOMENON
by Madalynn Welsh Continued from page 31)
Due to the use of hormone implants, producers can expect a 10-20% increase in growth rate, and an incredible increase in feed efficiency from implanted steers compared to steers raised without the hormone implant. These are just two examples of how the beef industry utilizes feed technology; additionally, consumers must keep in mind that these numbers are continuing to get lower and lower as innovations in science and technology are on the rise. Faux meat corporations are being unjust to the beef industry and its producers; moreover, supplemental meat companies are not fair to consumers. In grocery stores across America, consumers will soon be faced with a decision: To buy real, traditional beef, or to purchase supplemental beef. Consumers’ decisions will definitely be impacted by information on packaging and other promotional processes such as commercials. By using false information in these advertisements, fake meat companies are deceiving consumers and influencing shopper decisions using inaccurate statistics. In situations such as these, it is evident that by using false information as a marketing tool, fake meat companies are deceiving consumers. In the media, it has become apparent that the public wants transparency. Consumers demand to know what happens on the ranch their steak is raised on; agriculturists everywhere have embraced the media’s need for information and have begun to be more proactive in sharing their stories. By utilizing Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and more; cattlemen and women show consumers and the media what they do on a daily basis and the reasons behind their actions. Conversely, this is a much different story with lab-grown meat companies. Reporters aren’t allowed behind closed doors, and exact processes are unknown. By concealing information regarding the production of fake meat, faux meat companies are again being unfair. Consumers have a right to know how the product they’re consuming is actually generated. Lab grown meat is misleading to consumers; consequently, supplemental meat companies are destroying the beef industry’s credibility in order to market their own product. It’s important to keep in mind that lab-grown meat itself doesn’t necessarily pose a threat to our industry, there will always be a demand for real beef. The way fake meat companies are promoting their product; however, is a major problem. The slew of false information coming from lab-grown meat companies poses an obstacle for the beef industry to continue to produce enough food to feed the world, and ultimately feed 9 billion people by the year 2050.
