It’s Not Just Another Cattle Show By Andrea Murray
I
hope that this issue of the Gelbvieh World finds our members caught back up on rest and back to the normal routines of their daily lives. I am sure many of you are busy putting up hay and preparing to wean calves; the fruits of your last year’s labor. I would like to take this opportunity to extend a great thanks to the Junior Gelbvieh Association in Nebraska and the Gelbvieh Association in Nebraska for the time and hard work they devoted towards hosting an amazing and successful 2017 AGJA Big Red Junior Classic. I also want to thank our junior board for the commitment and devotion they put into not only Junior Classic, but also the junior program and its members. I would be remiss if I did not send my gratitude to the parents of our juniors that help make this program possible and devote countless hours at home and take time out of their own careers to further the skills and knowledge of their young Gelbvieh members. Congratulations to all our juniors for your rewards and successes, but more importantly for your hard work and dedication! Junior Classic is a fun-filled six days that draws our junior members and their best cattle together. Classic is not just another cattle show; youth also compete in various contests to prepare them for their future both in our breed and the beef industry. Video, poster, graphic design, and sales talk contests encourage members to establish priceless promotional and marketing skills that they will use in their own operations and for the breed. Undoubtedly, the most dreaded contest is impromptu speaking. The abilities acquired in this contest will continue to reap benefits for our members no matter what career path they choose. Quiz bowl and skill-a-thon push junior members to be well versed in beef cattle, the beef industry, and specifically Gelbvieh and Balancer® facts and trivia, and rewards them for their wisdom. In team fitting they must work together and communicate to obtain a common goal. They must

also be able to see their animal’s flaws or weakness and disguise them with craft and steady hands. Programs like mentor/protégé enable more experienced juniors to lead and form bonds by helping first or second time junior classic attendees negotiate the action-packed week. Through these contests our members learn hard work, dedication, and perseverance; all of which are traits to be admired of our upcoming leaders of tomorrow’s beef industry. Classic for many juniors is centered around time spent with friends. Underneath these friendships they are forming their very own network of peers that will help them blaze new trails for themselves and Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. They establish firm relationships with these peers and established breeders through social time. They also leave lasting impressions on contest and cattle show judges, as well as sponsors. As a parent, I have encouraged my boys to seek out someone new to participate in contests with and make new friends! The bonds they form at Classic are invaluable and will last them a lifetime. I believe one of the true advantages we hold as a breed is our junior program and the individuals that comprise it. I would encourage and challenge all of us to reach out to our own young members and to those that are not yet members and find ways to inspire, help, lead, and guide them. It is imperative that we continue to keep our junior program and junior classic high on our priority list. Our juniors are a jewel and they are the precious future of our Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. Through their annual meeting, contests, and running their own programs as committee and board members, we are ultimately preparing them to be adult members. As I consider the successes that some of our past junior members have achieved, I cannot help but think we will be truly amazed by the accomplishments of our current and future junior members. D

Thank You to the AGA and AGJA By Mary Bea Martin
I
n December of 2015, a door opened for me when I eagerly accepted the position of junior programs coordinator and member services specialist with the American Gelbvieh Association. A few months ago, another door in my life opened with the opportunity to work with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association as the associate director of member and affiliated services. As some of you may know, the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Big Red Classic in June was my last week with the AGA. What a wonderful event it was, thanks to the support from so many of you.
like to thank you for allowing me to be part of something I truly love, which is the agricuture industry. From helping new members learn more about what the association offers, to helping AGA members with the database and assisting the AGJA with leadership events and regional and national shows, I appreciate all that I have learned along the way. For the last year and a half I have been doing something that I am passionate about and I am truly grateful for the opportunity I was given to serve all of you. Thank you again to everyone that supported me along the way. If there is anything I can ever help you with at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Recapping a Week in Grand Island By Callahan Grund
I
know while reading this it feels like it’s been an eternity since we’ve all been at The Big Red Classic, and for those of you who were not in attendance, it was a fantastic week. June 25, 2017, junior members from across the nation gathered in Grand Island, Nebraska, for The AGJA Big Red Classic. The weather was fantastic and the facilities were above and beyond everyone’s high expectations. The Junior Gelbvieh Association in Nebraska and the Gelbvieh Association in Nebraska put in a lot of long hours and hard work to prepare for this event and on behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank you once again! It was a great week of fantastic competition between members and time was spent fostering friendships and relationships once again that will last a lifetime. One of the things I spoke about throughout the week was the unique experience that our classic brings to our members each year. The competitions help hone the skills that are molding the future leaders of our cattle industry. As a younger member it’s easy to get overly concentrated on the prizes and coming in first, but it’s when you become an older member that you realize it’s so much bigger than that. Whether it be sales talk, where you utilize the skills it takes to market livestock in a real life scenario, or the judging contest where you have to make quick decisions and be able to defend them, these
are valuable skills you’ll use for the rest of your life. Going into my last year in the association I’ve been able to see members older than myself take these skills and become leaders and innovators within the livestock industry and beyond. Another reoccurring theme that was described throughout the week was the family atmosphere that is special to the Gelbvieh family and particularly junior nationals. Of the seven members that ran for spots on the junior board, we went a perfect seven out of seven running on the platform of unity and the goal of keeping the family atmosphere. This year the junior board released a strategic plan with four main points, which can be found on pages 18-20 of this edition of Gelbvieh World. Two of these points relate directly to junior nationals: increase educational opportunities for members and maintain the family atmosphere. It was fantastic to watch both of these goals be accomplished throughout the week in Grand Island and we hope to continue that into the future. The other highlights of the week were, of course, the cattle shows. The judges on Thursday for the Balancer show and showmanship were Alan Miller and Will Coor. Friday, Jason Elmore sorted the steers and Gelbvieh bulls and females. As always, the champion females and bulls were fantastic representations of good-looking cattle that will hopefully go out and be functional cornerstone pieces of breeding operations. In all, it was a fantastic week and we look forward to the start of a new year as a junior association! D

embers of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) elected five candidates to serve two-year terms and one candidate to serve a one-year term on the AGJA Board of Directors. The election was held at the 2017 Big Red Classic in Grand Island, Nebraska, on June 28, 2017. The AGJA Board of Directors consists of nine AGJA members and one ex-officio member. Directors serve two-year terms and must be 16 years of age as of January 1, and many not have reached his or her 20th birthday as of January 1. Newly elected board members are Wyatt Forbes, DeSmet, South Dakota, son of Troy and Pam Forbes; Grady Hammer, Wallace, Kansas, son of Lyle and Christy Hammer; Kallie Mattison, Lamberton, Minnesota, daughter of Scott and Sonia Mattison;

The Board of Directors also elected individuals to serve in leadership positions on the 20172018 AGJA Executive Committee. Callahan Grund was elected president. the Hazelton Cemetery. Kelly was born Aug. 3, 1967, in Bismarck, the son of Roger and Laurel (Baker) Dahl. Kelly grew up and attended school at Hazelton. Following graduation from high school in 1985, he went on to attend Detroit Lakes Vo-Tech School. While in Detroit Lakes, he met his best friend and future wife, Michelle Simon. The couple was married on Oct. 8, 1988. Kelly worked for area farms and ranches before taking over the family ranch. The fourth generation at the ranch, Kelly and Michelle raised purebred Gelbvieh and commercial cattle. Kelly’s love of trucking began as a kid when he would ride along with his dad. He later took over his father’s trucking business. Kelly’s greatest joys of his life were his children, Tara, Maddie and James. His faith was an important part of his life. He made many friends, not only in the local community, but also through the many boards he served on. He was always there to lend an ear and quick to try to make you laugh. He has left a lasting impression on many people throughout the state and beyond. His family always came first. He would never turn a friend in need away. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of the community that will never be replaced. Kelly is survived by his wife, Michelle; his children, Tara, Maddie and James, all of Hazelton; his mother, Laurel, Lincoln; two sisters, Kristy Dahl, Bismarck, and Lynelle (Cory) Smith, Belfield; many brothers-in-law and sisters-inlaw; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Roger; and his grandparents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice. Growing Up Gelbvieh: Jim Dobson By Angela Vesco
I
t’s easy for Jim Dobson to say he’s been involved in the Gelbvieh breed his entire life. The Dobson Ranch near Kaw City, Oklahoma, was one of the pioneers in utilizing Gelbvieh genetics when semen was imported to the United States from Germany in 1971. When the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) was first established in 1971, Jim was the first child to be born of the founding group and therefore became the first junior member. Dobson Ranch also holds member number one of the American Gelbvieh Association. Since then, the Dobson Ranch has been raising Gelbvieh genetics. Today on the Dobson Ranch, fourth generation Jim Dobson and his brother John Dobson, are operating the place. They come from a long line of cattle ranchers going back to 1893 when their great-grandfather went to the Oklahoma Territory to claim land during the Cherokee Strip Land Run. Jim’s grandparents survived the Great Depression and bought the place they now call the headquarters of the ranch. Jim’s father, Mitch, who was one of the founding members of the AGA, became a cattleman when he was four years old and rode with his father to the Kansas Flint Hills on a trail ride. Growing up, Jim focused his attention toward the production side of Gelbvieh. Jim’s roots have always been in the Gelbvieh breed and when he came back to the family operation in the spring of 2009, he built the seedstock herd back up and started raising Balancers in 2010. Jim says that he really likes the Balancers because of the heterosis. He likes that he can take advantage of a bigger genepool through the Angus and Red Angus population to “breed down and come back up” with different genetics. Like most ranch kids do, Jim made a management decision that his father wasn’t quite in favor of: raising Balancers. Jim said that his father didn’t exactly agree with him mixing Gelbvieh blood with Angus blood. When asked about what advice he would give to the next generation of Gelbvieh breeders, Jim says to

“dream big and lofty goals” and to “breed with their eye.” Jim puts a lot of emphasis on the phenotypic capabilities of the cattle he produces. Dobson Ranch markets about 80 to 90 bulls each year and some of those bulls go to commercial producers in Oklahoma, where the pastures are big and full of rocks. Jim says that the cattle must be sound, good footed, and good boned. Jim also tells the next generation to not stray too far from the Gelbvieh breed because ranchers like the maternal strengths of the breed and want to keep the heifers as replacements. Dobson Ranch puts emphasis on selecting females that have good udders and can have a long and productive life in the herd. Jim also recommends that future breeders utilize an artificial insemination program in their operation. Jim says that it gives you the power to individually select matings to get the best possible result. Jim evaluates the phenotype of the potential sire and dam and also utilizes the progeny calculator in the AGA Online Registry Service to determine matings. The cattle industry is a family business. Many juniors today will go back to the family operation and will have family members as coworkers and that isn’t always an easy path to navigate. When asked how Jim and his brother handle the family/coworker relationship, Jim laughs and says that everyone needs to find their role and what they are good at and stick with it. Jim handles the side of the ranch that involves traveling and making the breeding decisions where John handles the day-today operations of the ranch. It seems that works pretty well for the Dobson Ranch. They run approximately 425 head of cattle at the foot of the Flint Hills in north central Oklahoma. D

wo junior members were selected at the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) 2017 Big Red Classic to represent the AGJA as ambassadors. Baxter Lowe of Adrian, Missouri, was selected to be the 20172018 AGJA Intermediate Ambassador. Braxton Murray, Kingfisher, Oklahoma, was chosen to be the 2017-2018 AGJA Junior Ambassador. Baxter is the son of Raymond and Melissa Lowe. In addition to this new role, he is very active in several other junior associations including the Heart of America Gelbvieh Junior Association. Baxter raises Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle along with his sisters, Isabel and Jessie. Braxton is the son of Matt and Andrea Murray. Braxton
is also an active member of the Oklahoma Gelbvieh Junior Association. Braxton enjoys working on his family’s Gelbvieh and Balancer operation with his parents and younger brother, Breckon. The AGJA created the ambassador program to encourage and support youth involvement in the breed’s activities. The ambassadors represent the AGJA at Gelbvieh functions throughout the year including Gelbvieh and Balancer shows held at the American Royal, the North American International Livestock Exposition and the National Western Stock Show, along with many state fairs and other events.D

T
he 37th Annual American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) junior classic show brought out the best of the Gelbvieh and BalancerŽ breed along with an outstanding group of AGJA members. This year’s junior classic event was held in Grand Island, Nebraska, on June 25-30, 2017. The Big Red Classic was the gathering place for 150 AGJA members from 17 states across the nation with 236 head of Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle present. The AGJA Big Red Classic, hosted by the Gelbvieh Junior Association in Nebraska and the Gelbvieh Association in Nebraska, boasted a week full of leadership and skills contests that concluded with two days of cattle shows.

The national junior Balancer female show and the bred and owned Balancer bull show was held on June 29, 2017, and judged by Alan Miller and associate judge, Will Coor, both of Gridley, Illinois. The two judges evaluated 16 Balancer bulls, and 119 Balancer females. The national junior Gelbvieh show was held on Friday, June 30, 2017. Jason Elmore, Waukomis, Oklahoma, judged the Gelbvieh female show, bred and owned Gelbvieh bull show and the Gelbvieh-influenced steer show totaling 76 Gelbvieh females, five Gelbvieh bulls and 20 steers. The following pages feature all the champion and reserve champion results as well as a list of the top three placings for all classes at the 2017 AGJA Big Red Classic. D

Scholarship Winners Announced at Big Red Classic By Rebecca Mettler

cholarships are awarded to worthy American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) members each year during the AGJA Junior Classic. The attitude of giving back to youth of Gelbvieh and Balancer® has always been strong within the breed. Providing opportunities for young adults to further their education is essential to the future success of the American Gelbvieh Association and beyond.

This year, five AGJA members received a total of $4,250 in scholarships from the AGF. The winners were announced at the 2017 AGJA Big Red Classic awards banquet. The following recipients include: Aubree Beenken, Buckingham, Iowa, $1,000 Earl Buss Memorial Scholarship; Grace Vehige, Bonnots Mill, Missouri, $1,000 Leness Hall Memorial Scholarship; Colton Spencer, Aurora, Missouri, AGJA $750 Scholarship; Halee Allen, Hillsboro, Ohio, AGJA $500 Scholarship; Sydney Taubenheim, Amherst, Nebraska, $500 Rea Memorial Scholarship and the Mary Zillinger Cates Scholarship. Aubree Beenken, daughter of Marc and Angie Beenken, was selected to receive the $1,000 Earl Buss Memorial Scholarship. Aubree is currently a junior at Iowa State University (ISU) majoring in animal science and agriculture and society. She is currently the ex-officio officer of the AGJA Board of Directors. Aubree is also the peer advisor for the ISU Freshman Council and has been an ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Ambassador since 2016. She plans to attend vet school after receiving her bachelor’s degree. The $1,000 Leness Hall Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Grace Vehige, daughter of Tom and Stacy Vehige. Grace will begin her freshman year of college at the University of Arkansas in the fall of 2017. She plans to major in agricultural communications and journalism. Grace has been a member of the AGJA since 2010 and is currently serving on the AGJA Board of Directors as secretary. She has also served as the intermediate ambassador in 2015-2016 and was a former junior ambassador. Grace has held offices in her community’s 4-H club, the Frankenstein Catholic Youth Group, the Random Acts of Kindness Club and National Honor Society. Colton Spencer, son of Jim and Janella Spencer, received the AGJA $750 scholarship. He will be beginning his sophomore year at the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) majoring in agriculture education with the goal of receiving his teaching certificate. Colton has been a member of the AGJA for nine years and is a past board member. He is also the past president of the Missouri FFA Association and is the president of the MU College of Agriculture,

Patti Kendrick Memorial Scholarship Tessa Ivers of Austin, Minnesota, was the recipient of the second annual Patti Kendrick Memorial Scholarship. Over the Fence with Brad Bennett By Megan Slater
B
rad Bennett is the extension educator for livestock evaluation and youth programs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). Brad serves as the UNL livestock judging team coach as well as the meat animal evaluation team coach in addition to teaching several courses. The primary focus of Brad’s extension program is youth education using animals as the vehicle to create knowledge, teamwork, critical thinking, and communication skills. The American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) was grateful to have Brad join the AGJA at the 2017 Big Red Classic in Grand Island, Nebraska. He served as the announcer during both show days and helped coordinate and officiate the livestock judging contest.
What programs or opportunities does UNL offer students looking to seek a career in the agriculture industry? In the UNL College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, we have 30 degree programs preparing students for careers in everything from animals to plants, soil to climate, golf to business, mechanization to leadership, and food to forensic science. We provide individualized academic advising to all our students so they can tailor their education and experiences to their interests and career goals. In addition to a wide range of majors, we have a program called Ensuring Your Future that guarantees participating students will have a job offer in their interest area within six months of graduating or we will pay to retrain them. To make this possible, we have our own career expert to help students with their resumé and interviewing skills as well as introducing them to numerous employers who attend our twice yearly career fairs. We are committed to student success at every level, which includes providing students with fabulous facilities, internationally recognized faculty, and significant scholarship dollars. We also offer the opportunity for students to create their own businesses through our Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship, get involved in an incredible line-up of clubs and organizations, conduct cutting-edge research with faculty mentors, or experience the world in far-flung locations through Education Abroad.

What does UNL look for in prospective students? In a single word, we look for passion. That doesn’t mean you must know exactly what you want to do in life. More importantly, have an outlook that allows you to find something you love, dedicate yourself to excellence, and always work to make yourself and those around you better. We have a set of world class academic programs, student involvement, and campus engagement programs that can give you all the knowledge you’ll ever need. But we can’t replace dedication, drive, and passion. They say “there’s no place like Nebraska” and that’s all because our students come in with that passion and they transform it into something great. We’d be happy to host you on a visit and to have you as a part of the Husker family.
How do junior programs, such as the AGJA, 4-H, and FFA, help to prepare youth for future success? In my opinion, nothing can replace the value of involvement in junior programs. Speaking from personal experience, it was involvement in 4-H, FFA, and junior breed associations that have opened up every opportunity I have ever had, both in college and my professional life. Often, we think of these associations as a way to show livestock and hopefully come home with some ribbons and banners, and that may be true. But what you will realize as your show career is coming to an end is that the livestock weren’t just there to be shown – they were there as vehicles to mold you into the person you are. Late nights in the barn, countless hours of work, and competing on the biggest stages build accountability, work ethic, and a competitive spirit. But they also instill communication, problem solving, and decision-making skills that are key components to anyone’s success in the future, whether you know that at the time or not. Beyond that, the network of people from all over the country that you have the chance to interact with will become your peers and mentors in the agriculture industry moving forward. I’ll paraphrase Jason Elmore’s comments at the conclusion of junior national that I thought best summarized how important these organizations and events are. “There is a lot of negativity in the world today. I wish everyone would witness what happens at a junior nationals and embrace the positivity we are building here.”
Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in their junior breed association? You’re never supposed to answer a question with a question, but hopefully we can make an exception this time. Would you grow up wanting to play professional baseball without first playing youth baseball? I think the answer would be no 100 percent of the time, and I’m a firm believer that it’s the same for those who want to be involved in the agriculture industry. Even if running a 500-head Gelbvieh seedstock operation isn’t in your long-term plans, chances are you’ll want to be involved in agriculture in some form and it’s organizations like the AGJA that will show you all the opportunities that exist in agriculture.

How does livestock judging prepare youth for a future career in the agriculture industry? We hear from employers all the time that experiences outside of the classroom are huge factors in deciding who to hire. Livestock judging both at the youth and college level is a way to give you those experiences. Judging has grown into much more than learning how to place four head, even though that’s still a major component. It’s also communication, problem solving, and decision-making skills that can be near perfected by devoting your time to judging programs. There aren’t many other activities that can teach you to evaluate a situation, arrive at a conclusion, and then confidently explain why in a matter of minutes. When you enter your career that same process becomes a staple of your everyday life. In our program, the focus is on building better people. When thinking about the list of pioneers that have brought the livestock industry to where it is today, many will trace the reason for their success back to livestock judging.
What do you see is the biggest challenge facing youth in agriculture? What can they do now to prepare? Challenges are simply opportunities for the next generation. The agriculture landscape is changing rapidly and it’s up to youth to understand where we’re at today and where we need to be in 10, 25, or 50 years. Often, we can get bogged down by what’s happening right now. I would challenge youth to always be forward-thinking. We need you to be innovative, willing to adapt, and knowledgeable enough to lead this industry well into the future. There’s not a silver bullet that can prepare you for everything you’ll encounter in life, but no matter what, ask questions, reflect on what does and doesn’t work, and always be willing to step outside of your comfort zone for the sake of progress. Benefits of Genomic Technology Outlined in Creative Writing Contest
T
he American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) has some pretty talented members in its midst. Each year, as a part of the AJGA Junior Classic event, AGJA members are given the opportunity to show off their talents in the field of writing through the creative writing contest. The first place entries in the senior, intermediate and junior divisions are rewarded for their accomplishments by having their winning entries published in the Gelbvieh World. The intermediate and junior division winners will be featured in upcoming months. For this magazine, the winner in the senior division is tasked with describing the benefits related to the adoption of genomic technology in both the seedstock and commercial beef industry.

hink about your life before you had access to mobile internet technology at your fingertips such as Google, Yelp, Facebook, Expedia, and any other site or application you use to get information about a product or service you plan to spend your hard-earned dollars on. Just like most other responsible consumers, you use technology available to you to look at customer reviews, product details, and other data to procure as much information about a product as you can before you make a purchase or investment. Some people may argue that things were “simpler” before this technology, but there is no denying that technology has improved the knowledge and ability of any type of consumer to choose and obtain the product that best fits their needs. Now, translate this into life as a beef cattle producer. The use of new technology has paved the way for beef cattle producers in the seedstock and commercial sectors to gain access to more information and subsequently improve their herds’ genetic value. The adoption of expected progeny differences, or EPDs, was the first tangible integration of data and technology into genetic selection of cattle. EPDs can trace their origins to the “the first National Sire Summary” which was established “in 1972, comparing EPDs of 13 sires” (Hammack). Since

then, EPDs have grown into a widely used and accurate means for beef producers to evaluate genetic potential of cattle and the impact that genetic potential will have on their herds. Taking that a step further, several breed associations, including the American Gelbvieh Association, have come together with International Genetic Solutions to create a “unique collaboration of 12 breed associations in the U.S. and Canada to conduct a common, multi-breed NCE [National Cattle Evaluation] with a combined database representing almost 17 million animals” (Ishmael). EPDs have been and will continue to be an excellent tool, with accuracy improving daily by the use of genomic technology. This combination of tools continually add value to a producer’s beef cattle herd. In tune with the pioneering spirit that beef producers have been known to possess, the development and adaptation of genomic technology by breed associations and other industry leaders has innovated improvements in the accuracy and marketability of EPDs in beef cattle. Genomic technology involves testing cattle for genetic markers of certain merit traits that offer added value in production. Genomic technology can assess a wide array of production traits. For example, “an animal genotyped with a 50K assay means its genomic snapshot includes DNA markers at 50,000 locations across all of an animal’s chromosomes” (Bickel). This technology continues to grow and improve the ability of beef producers to gain knowledge of not only the value of certain genetic traits in their herd, but also what can be improved in their herd by adding genetic variation of animals with quality in certain traits. After all, the end goal is more total pounds of high quality beef and beef products to the end consumer and this can best be obtained by the most well-rounded, genetically-efficient beef cattle. With a simple blood, hair, or tissue sample sent off to one of the many labs that offer genomic testing, seedstock producers can arm their customers with the most accurate data available to give them a clear picture of how even a relatively unproven animal can contribute positive genetic traits to their commercial or purebred herds. Seedstock producers tend to reap the most rewards from genomic technology by utilizing these practices to improve the genetic quality of the herds and subsequently use those stellar genetic markers to market the genetic abilities of their animals to their customers. Information provided by the accuracy of genomic-enhanced EPDs is the ultimate marketing tool to add to a producer’s arsenal. However, the benefits of genomic testing does not end solely with the seedstock producer. Commercial producers
junior news GW can utilize the value-added data of genomic testing to prioritize certain traits that will improve their feedlot potential and other genetic attributes that benefit their operation. Low-density testing is a viable option that can be of greater benefit to commercial producers at a more feasible price point. Low-density tests offer fewer markers and the “use of a low-density panel can still provide 96 to 97 percent of the genetic information of a full 50K genotype, but at a reduced cost” (Bickel). It’s important for knowledgeable seedstock producers to educate and inform their commercial based producers on the benefits Genomic Technology has to offer. “Knowledge is power” is a well-known and very accurate saying, which equates well with the choices we can make where genomic technology is concerned. The more knowledge we, as beef cattle producers, can obtain and pass on to our customers, the more power we have within the marketplace. Although there is still innate value in phenotypic quality of any animal, genomic technology arms us with the knowledge of accurate genetic value to add our marketing package. All in all, genomic technology is an excellent tool, which can
and should be used with other factors to empower beef producers to create and maintain the ultimate beef cattle for their operation. The AGJA Recognizes Top Supporters with Honorary Friends of the AGJA Awards

The Haglunds were instrumental in bringing about the heifer donation raffle that, to this day, headlines the fundraising efforts for the AGJA Junior Classic. The couple donated some of the first heifers for the raffle. The “fun day” held at classic each year was first made possible through the funds gathered from the raffle heifer. Their generous donations over the years to the AGJA has allowed hundreds of Gelbvieh junior members from all across the nation have an enjoyable time at junior classic and has inspired others to keep the tradition of the donation heifer going.
