Throughout the years the Pick of the Herd Female Sale has established a rich history of selling future champions and foundation females from many of the nation’s the most influential Gelbvieh and Balancer ® breeders. The Kansas Gelbvieh Association is proud to continue the tradition in 2018 with a deep offering of hand-picked females that rival, or perhaps exceed, the quality of any Pick of the Herd sales to date. The usual set of elite open and bred heifers picked from KGA member breeding programs, will be accompanied by the top cut of Myron Miller’s program and all of Stucky Beef Genetics’ 2016 and 2017 model females. Myron Miller has quietly built an elite nucleus herd that could add exponential value to any program, and he allowed us to select his very best. Over the years Stucky Beef Genetics has focused on producing the functional, modern genetics that excel in both seedstock and commercial programs; as any who attend Post Rock Cattle Company’s annual bull sale will surely have noticed.

As always, heifers selected from the KGA consignments are futurity eligible. Be sure to check out the details on the two futurity shows to be held in 2019. Speaking from experience, many young producers across the Gelbvieh breed have started their programs with Pick of the Herd heifers and there’s ample opportunity for the next generation in this year’s offering. Welcome to the Pick of the Herd Sale. This year’s offering is shaping up to be some of the very best Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics that you will find. The opens were selected from some of the breeds’ very best programs. If you are a junior looking for a competitive show heifer you have come to the right place. What makes the open female offering truly special is their potential outside of the show ring. I am confident that breeders and juniors alike will find cornerstone females out of this offering that will have a positive impact in their herds for years to come.

The selection of cows from the Stucky and Miller programs offer a great blend of phenotype while having the performance and EPDs that makes marketing easy. Both have worked countless years in the cattle business to make their cattle better and I am certain all cattlemen can appreciate the offering they have assembled.

This heifer has a cool look that definitely made her stand out in the pasture this summer. She’s got an attractive shoulder and neck with a ton of thickness and power down her top. Her sire was the standout Sandhills son of our 2016 calf crop. She’s already been to town twice to show and was Champion Prospect heifer at the 2018 Rooks County Fair.

Faith is another high performing heifer that had an adjusted weaning weight of 702# and a weaning ratio of 125. She was the highest indexing heifer we had this year and makes it hard for us to part with her. Faith’s EPDs put her in the top 5% for WW, top 10% for YW and top 20% for milk. Her dam has had 5 calves with an average weaning ratio of 106. Her sire (JRI Probity 245D28) was a past Balancer Futurity Champion out of the well-known Basin Pay Weight 1682.

Sandy Knoll has been raising Gelbvieh cattle since 1984. Heifers were born between January and April 2018. Over 200 heifers will be available to pick from, including black and red Balancers®, black and red purebreds, and even fullbloods. 60% of eligible heifers are Balancers ® and 40% are purebreds. 60% of eligible heifers are black and 40% are red. Heifers will be available for selection between December 1, 2018 and January 15, 2019. Stucky Beef Genetics Herd Reduction Sale Marla and I would like to thank the KGA board and Allied Genetics for allowing Stucky Beef Genetics to reduce our herd size by consigning to this prestigious sale.

I had great expectations for these females for our herd however we didn’t raise enough feed this summer to keep all of our herd so we decided to consign what we would want if buying, the best of a great calf crop year.

We made a good decision back in 1982 to invest in registered Gelbvieh. Lucky for us the people involved in Gelbvieh at the time we started were very helpful as we knew very little about raising registered cattle.

We have benefited from our relationships and improved our skills in raising registered cattle. One thing I can tell you with certainty is our Gelbvieh Cattle have been a great source of family entertainment as well as supplementing our income. We have never been bored since embarking on this adventure.

Most of the cattle we consigned are from the D year some have had one calf weaned and some have their first calf at side. These females represent the last of our natural service from Stucky’s Trustee 025MTZ and the first of TTTT Mighty Hot 1450B ET (The 2016 winner of the People’s Choice Balancer Futurity.)

Myron Miller Top Cut Female Sale Fellow Cattlemen: Our family considers it a privilege and an honor to participate in this year’s Pick of the Herds Sale. Our offering is truly the pick of the herd. Dustin Aherin made the first cut and Corey Wilkins trimmed the numbers down even more. We are bringing only the best.

We have a selection of first calf heifers, a couple of open heifers, but mostly mature young cows in their prime. I believe you will be hard pressed to find better udders than these females offer. Our entire offering is homozygous polled and 7 are homozygous black as well. The red females are diluter free. Don’t overlook the babies. They may represent the most valuable genetics in the offering. There are homo black/homo polled 7/8 PB calves on the ground that look like they will have a great future in the Gelbvieh breed. They should get a lot of attention the day of the sale.

We don’t have a herd bull or a clean-up bull; we are AI only. Study our service sires and appreciate the genetic advancement they offer. New to us is homo black/homo polled PB Chief Justice C205. His EPD’s put him in the top 5% in the breed for WW, YW, FPI. and TM; the top 10% for BW, HP, PG30, REA, and MB; the top 15% for CED and ST; and the top 30% for MK, YG, CW. That covers most of the bases. He has some outstanding progeny in the sale.

PICK OF THE HERD:

GELBVIEH/BALANCER JUNIOR FUTURITY HEIFER PROGRAM This program has been implemented to encourage the Jr. Members in promoting Gelbvieh at various shows as well as to offer the Jr. Members a chance to receive a payback for their efforts. This year the total payout is estimated at $ 1,025 to be paid in the manner listed below.

To be eligible: a.

Lots 1-41 in the KGA “Pick of the Herd” Female sale are futurity eligible for the 2019 futurity jackpot. This ruling on bred heifers selling will allow Jr. Members to show them as a cow/calf pair with a bull or heifer calf at side. Regarding ¾ blood females, if shown as a Balancer female in the spring show class, this female will show as Balancer in the Futurity Class. Status needs to be determined at time of entry to the Kansas/Nebraska Joint Spring Show. In order to be eligible to show all fees must be paid in full prior to the spring show. b.

The female must be titled in the Jr. Member’s name only and the Jr. Member must be a member of either the Kansas Jr. Gelbvieh Association or the Jr. GAIN Association. Memberships can be purchased at the time the spring show entries are due. In following the AGJA rules, a Jr. Member needs to be 8 years old to show. If Jr. Member is unable to show, futurity animals must be shown by an immediate family member in the futurity classes to be eligible for the futurity money, and this immediate family member must be a Jr. Member. c.

Futurity program year runs from the 2018 Kansas “Pick of the Herds” Female Sale until the 2019 Kansas State Fair Futurity show. Females sold in this sale will only have one program year of eligibility. A new group of females will be sold at the next designated futurity sale for the next program year. d.

All rules will be strictly enforced. Any questions or discrepancies that arise will be settled by the KGA Board.

Payout Breakdown: a.

Showing at the Kansas/Nebraska Jr. Association Spring Show (Futurity Show): Payout estimated at $1,025 in cash awarded. (Award money will be split 50% Champion Gelbvieh female and 50% Champion Balancer female) Females will show according to what is designated on the entry form. Regarding ¾ blood females, if the female is shown in the Balancer futurity class, she will only be eligible for the money designated for the Balancers. Two Futurity Classes (Gelbvieh and Balancers) will be shown and one Champion will be paid for each class. iii.

All Futurity heifers are required to show in the Jr. Show.
