TOGETHER IN PERFECT HARMONY It’s important when you’re shopping for your headpiece that you take into consideration your overall bridal look. “Think about the detail or fabric of your dress and where you want the focus of your look to be. Having one strong focal point can be a great way of adding detail without taking away from your dress,” says Rachel from Rachel Scott Accessories. Just remember: your headpiece and your jewellery should enhance your look, not distract from it.

In the detail

“If your hairband or headpiece is either close to your dress or is made of a fabric or lace which is similar to your dress, it is important to get a colour match for the piece,” advises Hannah Scheidig from Arabella Bridal. “The closer it is to the dress or if it’s a larger piece, the more noticeable this will be.” Stick to your style too. If you’ve chosen a vintage gown, then hold back on the bling and go for pearls or a delicate lace applique.

HAIR TOdAY “Even a vague idea of what your hair will be like on the day will help you when it comes to choosing a hair accessory that’ll work,” Di Walker from Lily Luna tells us. “Certain accessories like hair combs or pins work perfectly with hair up but can be tricky to keep secure if you have your hair down. A headband is usually considered a safe choice to go with different hairstyles but it’s not as versatile as hair combs, hair vines and pins, as far as positioning is concerned.”

COvER uP

Chapel (108”) Church (126”)

A headpiece can look completely different depending on the position of it on your head. Susan from Susan Dick Jewellery & Bridal Accessories says, “I have a few pieces in my collection that can be worn differently. A diamante string worn across the front of the head gives a decadent, luxurious feel to your overall bridal look; worn at the back, it can give a more relaxed bohemian look." The closer to the face the headpiece is, the more dramatic it'll look.

Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier 18th and 19th April, 1956

Dubbed ‘The Wedding of the Century’, this Hollywood star and her prince made a beautiful couple. They tied the knot in a civil ceremony at the Palace of Monaco, then held a religious ceremony at Saint Nicholas Cathedral the next day. The wedding was attended by around 600 guests and watched by an estimated 30 million on television!

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton 15th March, 1964

The screen legends met on the set of Cleopatra and got married (and divorced!) twice. Ever the fashionista, Liz shunned white in favour of yellow for their first wedding, finishing the look with lilies of the valley and hyacinths in her hair. The couple divorced after 10 years then married again in 1974, only to separate again in 1975.

GROOMS

SWD’s

good kilt guide about kilts, from how Everything you need to know -trend tar tans to wear yours to this year’s on

SHIRT The shirt should always be put on before your kilt to avoid creases if you tuck it in. Wing collar shirts suit bow ties but Ross Mackay, formal hire manager at Slaters Menswear in Glasgow says, “We’ve noticed a big demand for tailored-fit shirts that stop it being baggy. Victorian collars are still very popular.”

JACKET AND WAISTCOAT Choose between a formal Prince Charlie jacket with silver buttons, a more casual, laid-back Argyle jacket or a modern style such as a hybrid jacket, which can be worn with formal and casual outfits. Go for a colour that complements your kilt.

TIE Neil Fraser, area manager with Edinburgh-based The Kilt Hire Co says, “Tying ties and cravats can be an issue for people. We do a lot of cravats these days. It can be a little bit daunting the first time you wear one but if you can tie a tie you can tie a cravat.”

KILT Should be worn with pleats to the back and the fringes to the right hand side. As David Hughes from Bowdens Formal Menswear in Edinburgh points out, “The kilt sits mid-knee. The fringes should be to the right. If it’s to the left it becomes a lady’s skirt!”

SPORRAN Worn on top of the kilt at the front and fastened at the back. Neil suggests getting help with this one. “Putting a sporran on is quite difficult yourself because you have to fasten it behind you so getting someone to help is useful, or else you can spin the whole sporran round.”

FLASHES Match your flashes to your tartan or choose a complementary colour. Ross advises, “Pull the socks up as far as they can go, then put flashes mid-calf to the side of your calf facing out.” Remember to fold the top of the sock back down or it’ll look like you’re wearing tights!

KILT PIN Should be fixed to the top layer of the kilt to avoid damaging the cloth. You can opt for tradition and stick with your clan crest or a thistle-inspired motif, or alternatively, use this element to add a bit of personality to your outfit with a made-to-measure design.

SOCKS

GHILLIE BROGUES Slip them on and then tie the laces in a single knot before making six turns and tying them round the leg.

Nicolson Muted Red tartan with Nicolson tweed jacket and vest, sealskin sporran and brown ghillie brogues (to hire, £145), Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers

Leave a gap between the kilt and the top of the sock. David explains, “It’s not as easy as you think. Somebody can have a long leg and long knees, so three fingers from the knee is only a rough guide. There’s a fair bit done by eye.”
