It’ll be braw fun to be dressed up in a’ sorts o’ different outfits designed by some of Scotland’s finest talent. Imagine it – I’m even getting the chance to be a’ over the country at the same time showin’ aff these smashin’ designs. Maist importantly though is the opportunity to support sick kids a’ over Scotland, an’ help Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and The ARCHIE Foundation, an’ their tremendous work. You’re sure to hae bucket loads o’ fun walkin’ the BIG bucket trail, an you’ll have to be as fit as Fat Bob to do the hale Trail! There’s nae escapin’ me I’m everywhere.

About The Project Scotland’s children’s hospital charities have partnered with DC Thomson Media and Wild in Art to bring Oor Wullie’s BIG Bucket Trail to life in summer 2019.

This mass participation public art trail will see sculptures of Scotland’s favourite son placed in five cities – Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. The sculptures will be out and about in the cities all summer, and maps will be available to allow everyone to follow the city-wide trails.

‘These wee sculptures will form part of a wider education programme which focuses on the themes of art, citizenship, communities, and positive mental and physical health.’

At the heart of the main trail will be a series of wee Oor Wullie sculptures which will be decorated by schools, nurseries and youth organisations, seamlessly interweaving and showcasing the power of young creativity.

Over the summer they will be displayed in community locations such as libraries and community centres, and once the trail is over they will be returned to the school as a permanent memento of their involvement in the trail.

At the end of the summer the sculptures in each city will be auctioned off and the money raised will be used to support the work of Scotland’s children’s hospital charities – Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and The ARCHIE Foundation (Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, Tayside Children’s Hospital and the Highland Children’s Unit).

How It Works This exciting project will bring together artists, communities, schools and businesses, and will leave a lasting legacy for Scotland.

Schools are invited to apply for a wee sculpture package.

Each participating school will decorate their very own wee Oor Wullie sculpture, while using the accompanying cross-curricular education pack to support learning objectives.

The finished sculpture will be returned to your local children’s hospital charity and displayed in a prominent community location all summer.

At the end of the trail the sculpture will be returned to the school to be kept as a permanent memento of its involvement in the project.

How To Get Involved 1

Apply for a sponsored wee Oor Wullie sculpture package A limited number of sponsored wee Oor Wullie sculptures are available thanks to our Education Sponsor and a number of local and national businesses, allowing us to gift a number of sculptures to schools. Priority will be assessed through the application process.

Fundraise for a wee Oor Wullie sculpture package Your school can pledge to raise £500 for a wee Oor Wullie sculpture over the course of this school year. Your local children’s hospital charity can help you with fundraising ideas and materials.

Buy a wee Oor Wullie sculpture package Your school can purchase a wee Oor Wullie sculpture. For more information please contact your local children’s hospital charity.

Fundraising Ideas The money raised by Oor Wullie’s BIG Bucket Trail will support the work of Scotland’s children’s hospital charities in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness.

We would encourage your school to fundraise either as a one-off event or as part of a programme of fundraising running alongside the design and decoration of your wee Oor Wullie sculpture.

To celebrate our Scottish culture the students can raise money by paying £1 or making a donation to dress down wearing something tartan.

Oor Wullie is famous for his spikey blond hair, your school can raise money by making a donation to spike their own hair or come in with crazy hairdos.

Sponsored Silence

Oor Wullie is not the biggest fan of his school teacher.

Why not raise money by setting yourself a challenge and getting the children to sponsor you?

Oor Wullie is always talking to his pals Fat Bob, Wee Eck and Soapy Soutar. You could challenge your pupils to take part in a sponsored silence and see who can last the longest.

You could run a talent contest, a teachers lip sync challenge, a sponsored walk or throwing cream pies at the head teacher. There are so many things you can do to fundraise – we would love to hear the crazy things your school can come up with!

Whatever you decide to do we know you will have a great time supporting your local children’s hospital, and your hard work will mean we can continue to offer the first class support our communities deserve.

Who We Support Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity

We believe that nothing should get in the way of being a child. We exist to transform the experiences of children and young people in hospital so they can be a child first and a patient second.

We support and complement the work of Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children (affectionately known as The Sick Kids) to aid treatment and recovery. It is our privilege to support over 110,000 babies, children and young people who come to the hospital both locally and from across Scotland to access our specialist services.

We also support the tens of thousands who attend other children’s services such as St John’s Hospital in Livingston; community health centres across the Lothians, Borders and Fife; and children and young people’s mental health services.

We provide funding for medical equipment and services over and above NHS provision as well as research, parent accommodation and training. We run a drop in centre at the hospital where families can access creative activities, free play, complimentary therapies, and a listening ear.

We deliver an innovative arts programme bringing dance, art, messy play, imaginary games and music to the children, providing fun, friendship and distraction from pain. We cannot prevent children becoming ill but we can help their lives be less interrupted by illness and create a positive healthcare experience for them and their families.

The ARCHIE Foundation is the official charity of the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital (RACH), the Highland Children’s Unit (Raigmore Hospital, Inverness), Tayside Children’s Hospital (Ninewells Hospital, Dundee), and all child health across the north of Scotland and the Northern and Western Isles. Supporting many of the UK’s most remote communities, the charity provides extras over and above statutory NHS facilities to transform the experience of being in hospital for local children and their families.

We are very excited to be working with our event partners to bring Oor Wullie artworks to the streets and public spaces of five cities in Scotland in the summer of 2019.

Oor Wullie’s BIG Bucket Trail will see artists, young people and communities come together with businesses to showcase Scotland’s creativity, its heritage and spirit of fun.

DC Thomson Media and Oor Wullie DC Thomson Media, its brands and characters, have been at the heart of everyday life for generations. We are passionate about our readers and their communities and know what matters to them.

Since appearing in the Sunday Post over 80 years ago, Oor Wullie has become a much loved part of Scottish Heritage.

He’s the iconic wee Scottish laddie from the fictional town of Auchenshoogle, and some say the image of Wullie sitting on his upturned bucket, wearing his famous black dungarees is as familiar to Scots as Edinburgh Castle!

Wullie wages a constant war against boredom and he includes attending school in his list of boring things to do. He is a great righter of wrongs and will bravely tackle bullies to protect his lifelong pals Fat Bob, Soapy Soutar and Wee Eck. His occasional girlfriend Primrose Patterson is the only one allowed to call him William.

Wullie loves life, fun and laughter and even the figures of authority in his world; Ma, Pa and long-suffering PC Murdoch have to smile at his energetic pranks. He speaks a unique brand of Scots language which includes his famous sayings ‘Jings!’, ‘Crivvens!’ and ‘Help Ma Boab!’

Oor Wullie is so loved by the Scottish nation that in a survey conducted in 2004 the young scamp was voted ‘Scotland’s Favourite Son’, beating William Wallace and Sean Connery into second and 3rd places, with Rabbie Burns a distant 4th!
