What’s hot........And what’s not!

e often talk about trends in gardening, but unlike in clothing fashion, they tend to move more slowly. In fact, I reckon it takes around 10 years for a significant change to happen, and many of these stem (pardon the pun) from just a few sources. New trends begin with wild ideas from our top designers at flower shows like Chelsea and Hampton Court. These are then picked up by television and other media and slowly trickle down the chain into DIY stores and garden centres, where you and I can use them in our own gardens.

With the opening of the new parkland and gardens surrounding the Olympic stadium setting the trend, you can’t go wrong in 2012 with a few weeds! No, I’m not kidding, but to be more accurate and fair to the fabulous landscape architects who designed it, weeds are actually just plants growing in the wrong place, so in this instance they are wild flowers (how much nicer do they sound now!)

Health & Wellbeing Inspirational

Sometimes other people can aid our recovery Since working in complementary health I’ve been impressed by the way many people struggle to overcome worse illnesses than most of us will ever experience. I became involved with Reiki healing, nutrition and homeopathy because these therapies helped me years ago, long before Chronic Fatigue or ME were given a name. But I feel my struggle pales into significance when compared to those who pick themselves up from the shock of a cancer diagnosis or a disabling stroke. Sometimes the shock is all the worse for coming at an early age when sufferers may lose their job yet still have a family to support. Recently I attended a gathering at the Canary Club in Hitchin, organised by Sue Ross, for the benefit of people recovering from severe illness. At the age of just 26 Sue was struck down with a disabling stroke. She was confined to a wheelchair.

There were three speakers, all brilliant in their own way, recording their struggles and expressing gratitude for those who have helped them. They are all an inspiration. I felt moved to tears as I listened to their stories but mainly I felt bowled over not just by their bravery and determination but by their humour and creativity. They shared the common feeling, of being lost and alone with their illness, telling their story so others do not have to suffer similar isolation. A part of their recovery involved being inspired by others, role models in fact, and sharing their problems with someone who has an idea of what they’re going through. Please get in touch with Sue at www. lifegeta.co.uk or tel: 07715 707488 for more information about her work and the monthly meetings, whatever your age, illness or interest. She will be very sympathetic. She loves to chat, has a great sense of humour and is an excellent listener, an inspiration in fact! By Sue Blain Naturopath

While receiving wonderful care and support for her physical needs, there was a lack of emotional support and Sue sank into depression. She realised that she had to get herself out of that dark place, so she undertook a counselling course and finally set up her own business called lifegeta (She thought it sounded kinder than get a life!) and now she counsels others who have experienced physical and emotional trauma. The evening in Hitchin was the culmination of a dream she’s long held about getting people together who are recovering, are carers, friends, health workers etc, so they can talk, share, learn from and help each other.

Saving for Long Term Care Give your money a full service and MOT If you’re anything like me, my car service and MOT come round all too quickly. While it’s never my favourite job, I know that with regular checks my car won’t run efficiently and could let me down when I need it most. The same is true of our finances. You many have invested in shares, have a couple of ISAs, a pension and some insurance dotted around. You probably have some paperwork somewhere for them and get the occasional statement which you promptly file away for another day. However, when the time comes to make use of the savings and investments you’ve made, without careful management, you could find that they fall short of delivering what you needed them to do. If this sounds like you, then Lifestyle Financial Planning could be just what you’re after. I work with clients, evaluating every aspect of their money and financial

products, helping them to identify and achieve their goals and aspirations and develop together a plan to help them achieve their goals – be they early retirement, funding a child’s education or buying a home abroad. We then have regular updates and I monitor the plan making any adjustments that are needed to ensure that they are moving in the right direction towards their goals. So if you’re keen to make your hard-earned money work even harder for you then this could be just the financial health-check you need. For more information on Lifestyle Financial Planning, or any other aspect of your financial planning, contact Justin Stockdale of Sense Financial Solutions on 0115 837 8620 or email justin@itmakessense.net. Please remember that the value of the investment can go down, as well as up, and you may not get back as much as you put in.

Lifestyle & Leisure Get Knitted

I

t’s been described as the new Yoga. Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Geri Halliwell all do it and chances are your granny is an expert at it. So what is the latest craze to hit the 21st century? We are experiencing a knitting revival as women and men alike pick up long forgotten needles and yarn to create up-tothe-minute fashion items such as jumpers, scarves, hats and baby clothes. Gone are the dowdy knitwear patterns of yesteryear and in their place are the latest, trendy styles for you to knit and wear! Some accredit this revival to the recession – people are staying at home more and want something to do. Whatever the reason, sitting watching TV with needles clicking away eliminates any feelings of guilt you might otherwise experience!

something personal and unique brings wonderful feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment. Many people knit gifts for family, friends or charity and thus experience the irreplaceable pleasure of giving. Many knitters are quite happy doing it alone, but increasingly knitting groups are springing up where patterns, tips and friendship are shared. This includes the internet with its growing community of knitting bloggers. So, why not dig out your granny’s needles and give knitting a try? By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

J

The Perfect Pair eans are one of the most versatile and adaptable items in a girl’s wardrobe, but how do you find your perfect match?

Choosing a pair that is right for your body shape – and not necessarily the latest fashion – will establish balance and correct proportion that is key to achieving the most flattering look. Short legs need to look longer, fat tummies flatter and big bums smaller, whilst slim waists and shapely legs need to be shown off! Pay attention to the rise, cut, fit and wash of your jeans. For example, hipsters elongate the body and make a bigger bottom appear smaller whilst low risers broaden slim hips but may also produce the ‘muffin top’ effect. Decide what you want to hide or show and then choose a style accordingly! If you are big on top, slim fit or skinny legged jeans – even if you have lovely slim legs – will make you look top-heavy whilst attracting unwanted attention to hips and thighs for pear shapes. The solution in both cases may be to wear boot cuts – a flattering style for most women. The slight flare draws the eye from thicker waists and wider hips and helps achieve a balanced look.

Don’t be tempted to wear jeans that are too small to ‘pull you in’. Clothing that is too tight generally makes you look fatter. Find a pair that fits you correctly at your largest point and then make the necessary adjustments elsewhere. If a tubby tummy is a problem for you, avoid tucks, pleats and button-up flies to keep the front of the jeans as flat as possible. A higher waistline can also help to keep everything tucked neatly away! Dark colours create a slimming effect so avoid paler or lighter washed out shades around problem areas. If your legs are heavy at the top, jeans that fade below the knee will draw attention away from your thighs. If tall and slender is what you are after, wear jeans with a narrower cut and make sure they are long enough to almost cover your shoes. Capri cuts are definitely out for smaller women as they shorten the leg. Finally, pay attention to pockets, stitching and other embellishments. Pockets positioned wide apart will make your bottom look bigger, as will flaps and fancy stitching. Wherever there is detail, there will be attention, so only wear it if you want to flaunt it! Use the information here as a guide about what to avoid or look for, but don’t get too bogged down. There is no substitute for actually going to the shop and trying on! The key is to accentuate your assets and then wear your jeans with confidence! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Tips For Eating Al Fresco Invest in a proper picnic blanket with waterproof backing if you like sitting on the ground. Even grass that appears dry can create an uncomfortable damp patch, or leave an unsightly stain that may be difficult to remove.

T

here’s nothing quite like eating outside to evoke that happy, carefree holiday mood, but with British weather so unpredictable we need to grab the opportunity when we can. Here are our five top tips for making sure you are ready to go ‘al fresco’! Check you have all the necessary equipment to hand. Stock up on charcoal and make sure the barbecue is in good condition and clean.

Use plastic cups and crockery. Choose disposable ones if you want a really easy life, but reusable ones will ultimately save you money and are more eco-friendly.Make sure your hands and utensils are thoroughly clean before cooking or serving food. If you are away from home, take along wet wipes or anti-bacterial hand-wash. Thoroughly cook food that is to be barbecued and keep picnic food cool in a cool box or bag. Avoid food that will melt or spoil easily, like chocolate or bananas. In addition, remember to sit in the shade if the weather is hot, and always slather on sunprotection. So there you have it: the perfect recipe for a funfilled outdoor dining experience. Bon appétit! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Arch Communications

A

Rushcliffe company has given away more than £10,000 to charity in just a year of trading.

Arch Communications, based in East Leake, was founded by former BBC East Midlands Today journalist Matt Youdale. The PR and marketing firm operates as a social enterprise, which is committed to working for community benefit and giving away at least 10% of its annual profit. The company has just sponsored marketing for the first ever Chelsea Flower Show garden by Rainbows children’s

hospice in Loughborough. The garden, which won a silver medal, is to be re-built in the hospice grounds – and is being featured on Blue Peter! Arch Communications has also made a substantial donation to the Friends of Meadow Park, a voluntary group which maintains a large area of open space in East Leake. Matt Youdale has now been asked by one of Prince Charles’ charities, Business in the Community, to join ProHelp – a scheme providing free professional services to local charities and community groups. Matt said: “I love what I do, and it’s great to be able to help local causes. It just makes the job even more satisfying!” For more information about Arch Communications look at www.citylocal.co.uk/Nottingham

West Bridgford’s escabeche launches fresh new summer menu Independent tapas café bar escabeche is bringing the taste of sunshine to West Bridgford by unveiling an exciting new summer menu. The restaurant’s vibrant, seasonal offering combines over a dozen new dishes with platefuls of successful, signature tapas on which its young success has been found. escabeche co-owner Jon Perkins confirmed: “Since opening in 2010, we’ve listened to and learned exactly what diners are looking for at escabeche. They want exciting flavours, well-sourced ingredients and a clear, accessible menu – we’d like to think our new Summer menu reflects those demands. There are diners who visit escabeche specifically to enjoy our Moroccan lamb, meatballs, pork belly and squid etc. and we’re pleased to say they’re staying. But the change of seasons brings with it new, exciting ingredients, so what better excuse to invigorate what we’re doing at 27, Bridgford Road?” escabeche’s new dishes include a free-range, crispy skin chicken breast marinated with zippy lemon and coriander; sustainable, line-caught mackerel delivered daily and accompanied by a

26

sweet beetroot; and bouillabaisse which changes depending on daily catches. There’s Derbyshire beef rump hung for 28 days and cooked pink; vegetarian empanada stuffed with spinach, feta and pine nuts; and a wonderful, traditional Majorcan tumbet of aubergine, potato and gruyere. escabeche have also re-configured their menu design, making it even easier to order their delicious dishes. Perkins added: “Tapas is designed for simple communal eating. Alongside all the conventional tapas, our new summer menu simply features a European charcuterie board, a Mediterranean cheese board, eight fish dishes, eight meat dishes, eight vegetarian dishes, and six desserts. It’s a fresh new look for a fresh new offering.” escabeche’s new Summer menu sits alongside their constantly-changing £10 ‘Rapido’ set menu, which offers a choice of tapas and bigger plates, and their ‘escabeanies’ offering, perfect for young children. Perkins concluded: “We’re hoping our new menus really capture the lifestyle, spirit and flavour of the Mediterranean and transport it direct to the heart of West Bridgford.”

Community Information Transition West Bridgford A fruitful way to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee This time last year we were enjoying an abundance of apricots, cherries and plums thanks to the forethought of the Queen’s generation who planted an amazing array of fruit and nut trees in our area. The breathtaking blossom in spring and the crop of fruit and nuts later in the summer have given joy to local residents (and bees!) for nearly 60 years. Transition West Bridgford set up the Abundance group to make our community more resilient and less dependent on oil. At the same time, to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, The Woodland Trust aims to have 6 million trees planted in 2012. What better way to combine these efforts and plant fruit and nut trees for future generations to enjoy providing food on our doorsteps. Whatever your motivation, join us and plant a tree in the knowledge that your actions will make a big difference to you and your families. Be part of the 6 million tree target

and register on the Woodland trust website where you have planted your tree(s) The best time to plant bare-rooted trees is November and December. You can order them now (for a list of suppliers see the Abundance website) so that they are ready to plant in early winter. Until then, enjoy the local fresh fruit that this summer and autumn will bring. For those of you who currently have no access to fruit trees, why not visit the abundance shop in Clumber Road Stores, where surplus fruit and vegetables from local gardens will be given away during the harvest season.(*) For updates please keep an eye on the Abundance website or subscribe to the newsletter. Ellis Double Glazing Repair Services offer a brand new service, Conservatory Cleaning

Ian Ellis of Ellis Glazing Services is now offering Conservatory Cleaning, “I began offering this service earlier in the year before when I cleaned the after conservatory of a friend. The neighbours on both sides saw the transformation and asked me to do theirs and in the end I cleaned 4 conservatories on that street alone!” With over 20 years in the Glazing Industry and a good head for heights, Ian feels offering this service complements his existing business. “Sometimes a conservatory builds a greenish film up over time and a normal window cleaner can’t reach it, this is where I specialise. If the conservatory has other problems, leaks, drafts etc. I can sort them out as well.” So why not give Ian a call and let the sun shine in this Summer.

Lifestyle & Leisure Ballroom Benefits Get those feet tapping The popularity of shows like Strictly Come Dancing has led to many people to try out ballroom dancing for themselves. Who wouldn’t want to be able to move like last year’s winning couple Harry Judd and Aliona Vilani? But even if you’re not the sort for revealing costumes and sequins, there are still plenty of reasons why you should try out a tango. First of all, dancing is a great way to get healthy. Ballroom dancing is a low impact aerobic activity, meaning your muscle tone, your heart and the whole of your cardio-vascular system will all get stronger, meaning you look and feel better as your fitness improves. In addition, dancing will improve your flexibility, strength and balance. Studies have shown people who dance regularly remain mobile and agile for longer as they enter old age. Ballroom dancing provides an ideal, whole-body workout that will leave you looking and feeling great! Next, ballroom dancing is a great way to increase your confidence. Learning the moves and perfecting the routines gives you a sense of accomplishment and adds a new level of confidence to your life in general. Did you know that dancing regularly is not only good for our physical health, but our mental health too?

you will learn on the dance floor may benefit your crossword-solving skills too! Research shows that regular dancers delay the mental decline associated with getting older, and even lowers the risk of getting Alzheimer’s. Ballroom dancing is a great way to enhance your social life. Dancing is a social activity, and research has shown people with strong social ties and who socialise with friends have higher self esteem and a more positive outlook on life. Most ballroom dancing clubs do not require you to bring a partner along: the teacher will pair people off during the course of the class which makes meeting new people easy. As you dance and meet others, you’ll make new connections, new friends and your life will seem richer. These social benefits can help people with depression and anxiety too. The more you dance, the better the effects. Being physically fit and healthy has long been associated with good mental health, and ballroom dancing seems to be the ideal way to promote optimum fitness in all areas. It’s like the mind repairs the body, while the body repairs the mind! Interested? An internet search for ballroom dancing in your area will bring up many websites with more details of classes and times. What have you got to lose?

Learning something new has also been shown to improve overall brain performance, so all the new routines
