TABLE OF CONTENTS
FORWARD
This third edition of Thomas Marshall and his descendants completely supercedes: "THOMAS MARSHALL AND DESCENDANTS: PRELIMINARY COMPILATIONS," April 1982, and "THOMAS MARSHALL AND DESCENDANTS: SECOND EDITION," March 1983. This work expands and corrects the information in the two previous editions. The main thrust of this effort still focuses on the Marshalls of Dutchess County, NY. Most of the Marshalls of early Dutchess County were probably related. The early Marshalls of Rhinebeck are probable exceptions. They appear to be of Dutch origin, rather than of English origin as the family described herein. Another exception to Thomas Marshall and descendants is Jarvis Marshall of New York City in the late 1600s. Jarvis was one of the partners in the Nine Partners Patent. However, he does not appear to have settled in Dutchess County. In 1699, he received water lot #9 in the patent along with Jacobus Roloogan. However, he sold his rights in the lot to John Crook before 1722. Jarvis was still living in New York City in 1721 and appears as "very ancient and sick and weak" and dependent on the church for support. He probably died in the early 1720s. If he had any offspring, this author has never found any record of them.
This work is an attempt to link as many Marshalls together as possible. No doubt there are some errors and wrong assumptions. Any documented corrections, additions, and/or deletions would be welcomed. This is and iterative work. Research will continue so that an expanded and improved Marshall family history can be compiled.

THOMAS MARSHALL AND
DESCENDANTS
INTRODUCTION. The first ancestor of this Marshall family in America was probably Thomas Marshall. There were a number of Thomas Marshalls in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut during the sixteen hundreds. Many writers have varying opinions as to the origins and descendants of the various Thomas Marshalls. The origin and positive identification of the Thomas Marshall presented here is muddled with all his other namesakes. For various opinions on early Thomas Marshalls see: "A Genealogical Dictionary of The First Settlers of New England," Vol. III, by James Savage, 1860-62; "James Cox Brady and His Ancestry," by L. Effingham DeForest and Anne Lawrence DeForest, 1933; "Giles Family Memorial," by J.A. Vinton, 1864; "Pioneers and Patriots of Greenwich 1640-1780," by W. Willard Roberts, 1936; "The American Genealogist," Vol. 38, 1962; and "Pioneers of Massachusetts," by Charles Henry Pope, 1900. If you compare these six works you will find six different interpretations regarding the various Thomas Marshalls. A seventh work, "Ye Historie of Ye Town of Greenwich," by Spencer P. Mead, 1911, adds another variation on the Thomas Marshall theme. Mead's work serves as the backbone of the Marshall family presented here. Many primary records exist that support his work. However, it appears that he bases part of his identification of Thomas Marshall on some of the work done by those who preceeded him. His interpretation of Thomas Marshall is at least as good as anyone else, and probably better. Using his information as a basis, plus adding information of my own, I am adding an eighth probable version of Thomas Marshall. Until more reliable information is uncovered, the life of Thomas Marshall remains obscure at best.
1. THOMAS MARSHALL, a Quaker, was in the New Haven Colony as early as 7 March 1647 when he was made freeman at New Haven (Conn.). At a court held at New Haven on 2 Oct 1649, Henry Pecke and Thomas Marshall had to appear for not bringing their arms to a meeting on a day when it was their turn. In 1657, Thomas was living at Greenwich, Conn., when he was mentioned in a court case held at New Haven on 28 May 1685 regarding Richard Crabb. Richard Crabb and his wife were called to court to answer charges regarding "several miscarriages by many clamarous and reproachfull speeches against the ministry, government and officers, neglecting of meetings for sanctification of the Saboth, by himself or his wife committed ..... " One of these charges resulted from the Crabbs harboring Quakers and keeping Quaker books in their house. Thomas Marshall was the Quaker that they harbored. On 24 May 1658, George Slawson in his testimony regarding the Crabbs stated that on going to Greenwich with Daniel Scofield to take Thomas Marshall, they found Thomas at Richard Crabb's house. Richard Crabb tried to prevent the officials from apprehending Thomas. What the officials wanted with Marshall and what happened to him is not mentioned in the New Haven court records. According to Spencer P. Mead, Thomas Marshall died in 1671 and had the following children:
i. Thomas, b. at Boston 2 Jan 1644, probably died young. (Powers' note: This Thomas child is probably incorrectly attributed to the Thomas Marshall discussed above. The child was more likely a son (TAG, Vol. 38, Pg. 9) or grandson (James Cox Brady Ancestry, Pg. 269) of Thomas Marshall of Boston who died between 24 May 1664 and 8 Dec

David and Anna lived in Horseneck, Connecticut. David died in Greenwich on 17 Oct 1759. Where he is buried is not known. Stamford, Connecticut Probate Records show that on 27 Nov 1759, letters of administration on his estate were granted to Samuel Hait and John Griffen of the Province of New York. On 30 Nov 1759, John Clapp and Silas Mead inventoried David's estate and filed the inventory with the Stamford Probate Court on 4 Mar 1760. On 5 May 1761, David's widow, Anna, asked for an allowance for their youngest daughter, Abigail. Abigail was born two and a half months after her father died. On 4 Aug 1761, an account of the estate was filed with the court by the administrators. The estate was then ordered distributed to Anna and the children on 27 Aug 1761.
Anna Marshall died on 19 Jul 1780 and was buried at Purchase, NY. On 7 Aug 1784, letters of administration on her estate were granted by the Stamford Probate Court to her son, David. An invetory of the estate was taken on 23 Aug 1784 by Uriah Field and Thomas Clapp and subsequently filed with the court on 7 Sep 1784. 18. ZACCHEUSMARSHALL(David4, 7) was born on 5 Feb 1745/6 at Horseneck, Connecticut. After his father's death in 1759, Zaccheus went to live with Samuel Haight, who was appointed his guardian on 4 Aug 1761. Samuel was Zaccheus' uncle and lived just over the border from Connecticut in the Province of New York. Zaccheus became a member of the Quakers at an early age and was a member of the Purchase Monthly Meeting in Westchester Co., NY. At about the age of 18 years, Zaccheus married the first of his three wives, Anna Totten, on 14 Dec 1764. Anna was born on 20 Oct 1747 and died about 1788. Evidently, she was not of the Quaker Faith, since at the 12 Jun 1777 Purchase Monthly Meeting, Zaccheus was acknowledged and accepted for having married outside of the Quaker Faith. A month later, at the 10 Jul 1777 Purchase Monthly Meeting, Zaccheus' certification of removal to the Nine Partners Monthly Meeting in Dutchess Co., NY was acknowledged. Zaccheus was probably settled in Dutchess County as early as 1769. A Zaccheus Marshall is mentioned in the 4 Apr 1769 minutes of the annual meetings in the Crum Elbow Precinct. This is probably the Zaccheus discussed here, since the only other Zaccheus Marshall in the Crum Elbow area at that time would have been too young to be a landowner. Over a number of years, Zaccheus held a number of responsibilities in the Crum Elbow Precinct, such as: constable - 7 Apr 1772, overseer of the poorApr 1776, highway overseer - Apr 1790, and fence viewer - 5 Apr 1791.
During the Revolutionary War, Zaccheus was a member of the Dutchess County Militia. He was a member of the First Regiment of Minute Men under the command of Colonel John Van Ness. Commissions for members of this regiment were issued on 17 Oct 1775. Under this commissioning, Zaccheus was made a First Lieutenant in the First Charlotte Company. This company was led by Captain Smith Southerland.
After the war, Zaccheus was settled on his farm, which prior to 1820 was located in the western part of the town of Clinton. When the town boundaries in Dutchess County changed during the 1820s, his farm became part of the present town of Pleasant Valley. Zaccheus' primary trade was that of a carpenter. As such, he helped build the West part of the Crum Elbow Friends' Meeting House at Hyde Park, NY in 1785, and the East part in 1810.
Zaccheus was a member of the Nine Partners Monthly Meeting when on 24 Dec 1789 he married, second, Susannah Dean, daughter of Stephen and Abigail (Bowne) Dean. Susannah was a Quaker and a member of the Oswego Monthly Meeting, where the marriage took place. Susannah was born on 11 Jul 1756 in Dutchess County. On the 25th of the 2nd month, 1790, a Quaker removal certificate shows that Susannah moved from the Nine Partners Monthly Meeting to the Creek Monthly Meeting.
After the death of his second wife, Zaccheus married, third, Jane Quinby or Quimby, daughter of Samuel and Mary Quinby or Quimby of North Castle, NY. The marriage took place in the Crum Elbow Meeting House on 24 Apr 1806.
Zaccheus made out his will on 3 Oct 1822. He died on 20 Jul 1830, and his will was proved on 25 Sep 1830. His third wife, Jane, died on 15 Apr 1852 or 4. Both are buried in the Crum Elbow Cemetery. Jane's grave is marked, while Zaccheus' is not. Children: - 9 -
