Mission The Danville Community College Educational Foundation, Inc., was established in 1982 as a 501 (C) 3 non-profit organization with zero assets. While the DCC Educational Foundation supports Danville Community College in its endeavors, the DCC Educational Foundation is a completely separate entity controlled by the Foundation’s Board of Directors and its Executive Director. The DCC Educational Foundation has a separate operating budget and guidelines provided by the donors and Board of Directors as to how its funds can be utilized.

College Support Currently, the DCC Educational Foundation has over $12 million in total assets to fulfill its mission of continued support for Danville Community College. In accordance with that mission, the DCC Educational Foundation has overseen the establishment of many endowed scholarships and the creation of an endowed faculty position. It is also responsible for the promotion of faculty and staff professional development through funding opportunities and has provided funding to strengthen academic programs and encourage cultural activities at Danville Community College. Funding provided by the DCC Educational Foundation has been vital in the construction of new facilities on the DCC campus and the purchase of new state-of-the-art equipment for DCC program to keep pace with technological changes.

FROM THE DANVILLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION BOARD CHAIR

As outgoing Board Chair, it has been my pleasure to work with the many Board members, community volunteers and donors who have helped make 2019-2020 a very successful year for the DCC Educational Foundation. During my tenure as Board Chair, the DCC Educational Foundation has experienced tremendous growth.

This can be attributed, in part, to the successful conclusion of the Pathways to Regional Success – Major Gifts Campaign which concluded in June, 2020 surpassing its goal of $10,000,000!

Another significant factor in the growth of the DCC Educational Foundation has been increased community support. In academic year 2019-2020, the DCC Educational Foundation received funding for the creation and endowment of scholarships, underwriting college programs and naming the recently constructed welding building on the DCC campus. Thanks to the generosity of a very special donor, the DCC Educational Foundation received its largest individual bequest todate.

In 2020, the world as we know it changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic created significant hardships for many DCC students and our community members responded to the request to meet the increased needs of these students by contributing to the newly-established Support-A-KNIGHT fund. This initiative was the DCC Educational Foundation’s way of raising funds to provide assistance, if needed, to DCC students in this time of need in order for them to be able to focus on their studies.

The investments provided by our community members and donors have allowed the DCC Educational Foundation to provide additional resources to DCC and its students. Speaking for the members of the DCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors, I would like to thank each and every one of you who have contributed to the DCC Educational Foundation’s success in 2019-2020.

MAJOR GIFTS CAMPAIGN

SUCCESSES

The DCC Educational Foundation enjoyed great success during the 2019-2020 academic year.

Thanks to the generous support of our community donors, the DCC Educational Foundation was able to successfully complete the Pathways to Regional Success – Major Gifts Campaign.

This allowed for the increase in the amount of scholarship funding awarded to DCC students, provided equipment for a significant number of technical programs, and assisted DCC students with food insecurity needs, childcare needs, student success initiatives and student hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, to name a few. This five-year campaign goal of $10,000,000 was surpassed in less than 36 months raising $10,360,300.

Additional fundraising highlights during the Pathways to Regional Success – Major Gifts Campaign include: growth of the endowment to provide increased scholarship funding and college support, a building naming opportunity on the DCC campus and the endowment of a faculty nursing position. Also during this campaign, the DCC Educational Foundation received the largest individual bequest to-date from the estate of long-time supporter, Ms. Anita J. Wyatt.

Behind every successful fundraising effort, there is always a core group of dedicated individuals who spearhead the effort. The seven men and women shown here represent the college’s three service regions – City of Danville, Halifax County and Pittsylvania County. Each worked tirelessly to help coordinate this effort and much of the credit for its success is due to their hard work and dedication.

LARGEST BEQUEST ANITA J. WYATT

For Anita J. Wyatt, education beyond high school was a “not too practical desire” since family finances were prohibitive when she graduated from George Washington High School. She began work after high school graduation at C&P Telephone Company, diligently saving money for education.

A co-worker encouraged her to find a way to attend DTI for a year. “When I entered Danville Technical Institute as a one-year secretarial student, I had no idea that I would ever be able to obtain the education I have now,” explained Anita.

From 1957 to 1983, Anita obtained five associate degrees from Danville Technical Institute and Danville Community College. Anita said, “Obtaining the associate degrees with high honors meant a great deal to me.” To ensure that others would have funding to obtain an education, Anita began investing in the DCC Educational Foundation in 2011, when she established two endowed scholarships. Over time, she also purchased bricks at the Student Center, contributed to the Alumni Scholarship Fund, Anita J. Wyatt (‘57, ‘73, ‘75, ‘76, ‘83) provided funding for the college’s High School Career Coaches program and named the DCC Educational Foundation Conference Room, all before her death in 2019. In her estate, Anita named the DCC Educational Foundation as a beneficiary and provided the largest individual gift to-date to the Educational Foundation to continue her support for both the Educational Foundation and the students in perpetuity.

SCHOLARSHIP RECEPTION

One of the main objectives of the DCC Educational Foundation is to provide available scholarship funding to students who are committed to success, thereby, allowing them to attend the college at little-to-no cost. Another objective of the Educational Foundation is to expand scholarship offerings to our students in programs that are essential to regional economic development. In addition, the Educational Foundation strives to grow our individual scholarship endowments to ensure additional funding for future students. Your continued investments have allowed the DCC Educational Foundation to succeed on all three objectives in 2019-2020.

On September 9, 2019, the Educational Foundation hosted its 20th Annual DCC Educational Foundation Scholarship Reception at the Institute for Advanced Learning & Research. The DCC Educational Foundation awarded scholarships with an average award of $3,000 to approximately 200 students totaling over $575,000. This was a 4.5% increase in scholarship funding from the previous academic year.

Thanks to the continued financial support by our community, more than $4,000,000 has been invested in over 2,000 DCC students during the last decade.

21ST ANNUAL DCC EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

GOLF TOURNAMENT In October, 2019, the DCC Educational Foundation hosted its 21st annual golf tournament at Tuscarora Country Club. The two-day format hosted ladies’ teams on Thursday, October 10 and gentlemen’s teams on Friday, October 11, 2019. This format allowed for additional teams to participate and support the DCC Educational Foundation Golf Tournament Scholarship Fund. With over 45 teams supporting the tournament, 2019 was the most successful year to-date.

As in the past, community sponsors provided funding for breakfast, lunch and the cocktail reception. In addition, sponsorships included: golf cart sponsor, cigar cart sponsor, closest to the pool shot sponsor, snack cart sponsor, ice cream cart sponsor, wheel barrow load sponsor, hole sponsors, prize sponsors and dozens of items for the golfers’ gift bags.

All proceeds from the Annual DCC Educational Foundation Golf Tournament are returned to the students attending DCC in terms of scholarship support.

Over $100,000 raised in scholarship funding for DCC students during academic years 2011-2019.

A KNIGHT FUND

On June 4, 2020, the Support-A-KNIGHT Fund campaign was initiated by the DCC Educational Foundation to support DCC students who had been directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This fund was used to help meet the basic needs of those DCC students and some of the eligible needs were the lack of transportation or vehicle concerns, childcare issues, overdue utility or rent payments, technology needs and DCC Bookstore charges. “The COVID-19 pandemic created a financial burden for many DCC students,” said Shannon Hair, Vice President of Institutional Advancement & Development at Danville Community College and DCC Educational Foundation Executive Director. “The Support-A-KNIGHT initiative was the Educational Foundations way of providing financial assistance, if needed, to DCC students in their time of need so they could focus on their studies.”

Ways to make a gift: There are many kinds and ways to make a gift to the DCC Educational Foundation. A gift can be given as cash, securities, property, trusts, a bequest or in some combination of the following: • Appreciated stock or securities given to the foundation have the added advantage of giving a donor the ability to deduct the appreciated market value without paying the capital gains tax.

• Insurance gifts to paid-up policies, new policies or naming the DCC Educational Foundation as beneficiary. Property gifts can encompass many things from real estate to personal property and equipment.

• Naming the DCC Educational Foundation in your Will and designating the gift to be given.

• The payroll deduction plan is available to staff and faculty at Danville Community College.

• An outright cash/check gift to the DCC Educational Foundation. These gifts can also be made as a pledge paid over a period up to five years.

• Creating a Charitable Trust Agreement with the Foundation as a beneficiary.

MESSAGE

FROM THE DCC EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The 2019-2020 academic year began with the anticipation of completing the Pathways to Regional Success – Major Gifts Campaign. The DCC Educational Foundation’s Annual Scholarship Reception, Annual Golf Tournament and Annual Holiday Gathering proceeded as planned. Little did we know at the time that in the early months of 2020, our world would turn upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The restrictions imposed during that time prevented many of our scheduled activities including the Annual Outstanding Alumni Reception and the building dedication for the naming of the Kiwanis Club of Danville Foundation – Danville Lions Foundation, Inc. Welding Center of Excellence.

As the pandemic grew more wide-spread, the college, along with many other higher education facilities, was forced to alter many things including instructional delivery and on-campus attendance. Many DCC students were significantly impacted during this time and the DCC Educational Foundation established the Support-A-KNIGHT Fund and increased fundraising efforts for the DCC Knights Pantry (student food insecurity). The community support received at this time was critically important to the success of these two initiatives. These student support initiatives will continue to provide assistance to DCC students as long as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

The 2019-2020 academic year brought great highs and great lows. From the successful completion of a major gifts campaign to the creation of student support initiatives to alleviate some of the student hardships created by the pandemic, the DCC Educational Foundation received generous support from our community and donors. Without your support, nothing we do would be possible. I, along with the members of the DCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors, would like to extend our sincerest gratitude and appreciation to our community and donors. We are committed to investing wisely and being good stewards of the resources you provided so that your desire to make a difference is honored.
