In planning and implementing various activities throughout last year, our goal was to Celebrate, Thank, and Give back to the community. Our entire board and staff were fully engaged as we celebrated what the Foundation has accomplished through partnerships; thanked donors, grantees, volunteers, and staff who have contributed to our collective success; and gave back through some unique artistry and grant programs. 25 Years of Community Philanthropy (1993-2018) 1993
Local philanthropists Charlie and Mary Roberts work to create a community foundation for DeKalb County. The couple asks local attorney Ron Klein to assist and in March 1993, with a $3.6 million initial gift from Charlie and Mary, the DeKalb County Community Foundation begins.
1997 Cumulative grantmaking soars above $1 million.
21-member board of directors created, representing communities of DeKalb County. Dick Ubl hired as the first executive director.
1998 Assets grow to $12.7 million.
1999 Jerry Smith hired as first full-time executive director.

Foundation Celebrates 25 Years of Community Philanthropy!
During 2018, the Community Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary with a number of exciting activities designed to celebrate, thank, and give back to the community. A special thank you to local artist Lynden Bute for his 2011 pencil and watercolor drawing of the Depot. With his permission, the drawing was used for all of the 25th Anniversary materials. Lynden has two drawings of the Depot currently on display at the Community Foundation. The black and white print compliments the rich wood tones of the second floor landing, while the watercolor welcomes first floor visitors in the entryway.

Celebration Grants

Partnering with WNIU/WNIJ, Stories of Generosity were recorded at various locations and times during 2018. These stories came from community members who wished to speak of generosity. The prompt was simple. Each person was asked to define generosity or to share a story of a time where they heard about, witnessed, or experienced generosity (giving of one’s time, talent, or treasure). A few selected stories were featured during the November 2018 Celebration Dinner program.

As the ‘Give’ part of the celebration activities, Celebration Grants were specific to each community in DeKalb County. A $2,500 grant was given away to each community to benefit an eligible nonprofit or community organization located in each community. The Foundation implemented this during a signature event associated with that community – one that drew many local attendees. The Foundation participated in these signature events by way of a booth or table and took nominations from attendees. At the end of each event, a drawing was held and the selected organization received a Celebration Grant from the Community Foundation. Thank you to the many volunteers who gave of their time and talent to make these Celebration Grants possible. With 17 community events to attend, we could not have done it without them!

Foundation Celebrates 25 Years of Community Philanthropy!
The Sycamore Depot Light Show Saturday, May 19
Working with NIU Associate Professor Bart Woodstrup and Time Arts students Kate Keeling and Alec Bourke, the Sycamore Depot Light Show took place on Saturday, May 19. Through artistic interpretation and motion graphics, the Light Show provided viewers a unique overview of the Community Foundation’s 25 years of philanthropy and delivered a few laughs along the way. Prior to the start of the Light Show, attendees were invited inside to view “DeKalb County by Drone,” another artistic piece from Bart Woodstrup. Displayed on the interior walls of The Freight Room, this 30-minute show took viewers up and above DeKalb County, capturing an aerial view of the communities we serve. Thank you to the Northern Illinois University Time Arts students, Bart Woodstrup, Upstaging Inc., The Gracie Center, AutoMeter Products, Inc., the City of Sycamore, and the Sycamore Police Department for all their assistance in making this evening possible.

Foundation Celebrates 25 Years of Community Philanthropy!
Multi-Chamber After Hours Thursday, October 18 In celebration of 25 years, the Foundation held a special after hours in The Freight Room, inviting local chambers and organizations from all across DeKalb County. On Thursday, October 18, over 100 attendees came through for this multi-chamber event. Attendees included: Sandwich Chamber of Commerce, DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce, DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation – DCEDC, Visit30.com - Waterman-Shabbona Business Association, Greater Kirkland Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Hinckley Business Association. Nominations for a DeKalb County Celebration Grant were taken and the $2,500 grant was awarded to HarmonEssence A Cappella Chorus.
Oral History Narrative Graphic Thursday, October 18 On the morning of October 18, the Community Foundation held a special President’s Council meeting that included past and present board presidents and executive directors. In that meeting, a consultant and artist facilitated an ‘Oral History Narrative’ discussion – highlighting key events, themes, and the evolution of the Foundation over the past 25 years. As questions were asked and the group responded, the artist drew. The resulting graphic captured the conversation and history of the past 25 years. The graphic was on display during the 25th Anniversary Celebration Dinner.

Sycamore Pumpkin Fest Saturday, October 27 The Community Foundation participated in the Pumpkin Fest Historic Tour of Homes by listing the Sycamore Train Depot as a tour stop. On Saturday, October 27, hundreds of visitors walked through the doors eager for a tour of the building. 25th Anniversary materials and giveaways were onsite to ensure guests understood the reason for celebration. The overall theme for Sycamore Pumpkin Fest was ‘Built in Brick.’ How fitting!
Community Foundation Week November 12-18 During this week-long celebration of community foundations all across the world, the 25th Anniversary celebration continued with a special Foundation Celebration Dinner and a few activities led by the Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) committee.
25th Anniversary Timeline Video Working with local media agency, OC Creative, the Community Foundation created a timeline video capturing 25 years of philanthropy in DeKalb County. Viewers were taken on a quarter century journey, beginning with an initial contribution by founders Charlie and Mary Roberts who would be in awe today of the countless lives impacted in our community.

Foundation Celebrates 25 Years of Community Philanthropy!
25th Anniversary Celebration Dinner Thursday, November 15 On this memorable evening in November, the Community Foundation held a special 25th Anniversary Celebration Dinner. A wonderful evening of celebration and reflection with donors, board members, and other supporters. The evening began by reflecting back on founders Charlie and Mary Roberts and their vision for the Foundation, followed by a round of thank you’s to past and present leadership for their many contributions. The program continued with inspiring remarks from Doug Roberts, son of Charlie and Mary. Next up was an armchair discussion with past and present executive directors Dan Templin (2008-Present), Jerry Smith (1999-2008), and Dick Ubl (1993-1999), moderated by board president Frank Roberts. From there, representatives from Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) took the stage for a few minutes of youth impact and storytelling. Closing out the evening was a ‘Next 25 Years’ presentation and the final Celebration Grants drawing.

Community Initiatives: DCNP Membership
In 2018, DCNP membership increased to 120 and has grown by 67% since DCNP became a formal program of the Community Foundation in 2015.
Training
DCNP coordinated 58 training opportunities in 2018. Overall, these trainings had a 96% satisfaction rating from attendees and 97% said that DCNP training increased their knowledge and/or skill level.
Nonprofit Essentials Training Series 2018 Nonprofit Expo, an exciting speed networking opportunity for participants of the DeKalb Chamber’s Leadership Academy to meet members of DCNP and learn more about nonprofits.
The DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership (DCNP) is a membership-based program of the Community Foundation that strengthens the nonprofit sector through leadership, professional development, and collaboration.

DCNP partnered with the Sandwich Area Chamber of Commerce, Sandwich Public Library District, and Fox Valley Older Adult Services to offer a three-part training series in Sandwich during 2018. This series earned a 99% satisfaction rating overall and allowed DCNP to better serve southern DeKalb County.
Internship Program
In 2018, 34 undergraduates from Northern Illinois University were placed with DCNP-member organizations and completed over 4,080 hours of services in communities throughout DeKalb County. Stipends of $575 were provided to interns courtesy of the Douglas C. & Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation.
Community Initiatives: DCNP Nonprofit Day
Sponsored by First Midwest Bank, DCNP hosted its largest ever annual conference that brought together 145 attendees for a day of professional development, networking, and learning.
Give DeKalb County
DCNP’s annual day of giving reached new heights in 2018 with $614,555 raised for 91 participating nonprofits and funds. In just 24-hours, 3,647 donations were made by 1,724 donors.
Since 2014, selected NIU students have completed over 17,000 hours of service in DeKalb County through the Internship Program.

In 2018, Micki and Tony Chulick started the DCNP Endowment Fund with the purpose of sustaining DCNP’s mission for years to come. The creation of this fund kick-started the Stronger Together campaign—a timesensitive effort that the Community Foundation embarked on in September 2018. The Stronger Together campaign’s goal was to grow the DCNP Endowment Fund to a total of $2 million. The Community Foundation committed $1 million as a sign of its dedication, along with additional contributions from donors excited to provide core support to DCNP. At the start of the campaign, the DCNP Endowment Fund was valued at approximately $1.4 million, leaving $600,000 left to go. The Douglas C. & Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation generously offered a dollar for dollar match up to $300,000 for donations and pledges made through December 31, 2018. In a few short months, 131 donors contributed $286,267 toward the goal. When matched by the Douglas C. & Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation, a total of $647,534 was raised in support of DCNP.

Community Initiatives: YEP In the fall of 2018, YEP began its 10th year of youth philanthropy. With 78 members representing 10 high schools in DeKalb County, the committee successfully allocated $14,005 in YEP Grants to nine organizations for a variety of programs and projects in the community.

Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) is a youthled committee of the DeKalb County Community Foundation. Through monthly meetings, leadership activities, and volunteer outreach events, members of the YEP committee become familiar with local nonprofits, learn how to analyze grant applications, and allocate over $12,000 in youth impact grants for DeKalb County.

Seeing a rise in interest over the last two years and taking meeting room size into account, membership for YEP was capped at 70. Keeping this in mind along with the mission to be DeKalb County focused, each high school was given a pre-determined amount of membership spots. With a high amount of returning members, the cap was adjusted to accommodate 78 students.
Donor Relations & Fundraising Chair
The donor relations & fundraising chair is the 6th executive committee position for YEP. This new position focuses exclusively on donor communication and raising support for YEP in a variety of ways, including the all new Proactive Grant program.
Community Initiatives: YEP Proactive Grant Committee
The proactive grant committee was created with the 3rd and 4th year members in mind. This new committee provides a unique challenge to think beyond responsive grantmaking and instead to think through current youth issues that could be addressed proactively. The committee selected “lack on youth involvement in the community” as the issue, particularly volunteerism, which was then narrowed down to middle school age students. Thanks to a generous $2,500 dollar for dollar match from John and Nancy Castle, the committee successfully raised over $5,000 to fund the first project. The 2019-2020 committee will pick up the project in September and see it through completion in 2020.
YEP and volunteerism go hand in hand. The YSB Royal Children’s Ball is an annual favorite.
10 Year Celebration Event
This year’s May meeting was amplified to include a 10 Year Celebration event. YEP celebrated past and present leadership, 10 year’s of donor generosity and impact, the 470 past and present members, and this year’s grantees with a project summary and check presentation.

Give a Gift of Grain Farmers and landowners have a new charitable giving option thanks to a collaboration between the DeKalb County Community Foundation and the DeKalb County Farm Bureau Foundation. ‘Gift of Grain’ allows farmers to align generosity with their charitable interests and receive tax savings at the same time. Donating a gift of grain is a simple way to make a lasting difference. The value of the grain is used to support charitable causes in the community, support a specific nonprofit organization, or start an endowed fund in the name of their family. Through a gift of grain, farmers can deduct the cost of grain, which typically results in saving self-employment tax, federal income tax, and state income tax. Farmers benefit even if they do not itemize their deductions and take the standard deduction. Working with local grain elevators, the process for donating is simple. Farmers decide ahead of time where they would like to direct their donation and then proceed through a few simple steps. The Gift of Grain account has been established with the Community Foundation whereby farmers can direct their grain donation to either the Community Foundation or Farm Bureau Foundation and also earmark the donation for a specific cause or charity. The Community Foundation will receive the monetary donation and disburse the funds to the intended charitable group. Through the ‘Give a Gift of Grain’ option, farmers can provide opportunity and support to many areas including agriculture awareness, education, community development, literacy, local charities, natural resources, nonprofit support, and scholarships.
