La cruz de la bahía

El mes de octubre es un mes muy especial para mi, el día 21 fue el nacimiento de un hombre que quise y admire mucho, Don Ramón Bravo Prieto. Tuve la fortuna de trabajar y aprender de el.

El fue quien tuvo la idea de instalar esculturas religiosas bajo el fondo del mar. El primero fue un Cristo que se instalo en el famoso arrecife de Palancar en Cozumel a una profundidad de 24 metros

La segunda y no menos importante fe la Cruz de la Bahía de la cual voy hacer referencia.

La idea empezó a rondar en la cabeza de Ramón en el año de 1993, cuando vio con tristeza como se estaban afectando los arrecifes y los grandes peces empezaban a escasear, con voz profunda me dijo, tenemos que hacer algo para evitar esta destrucción, por eso vamos a sumergir un símbolo religioso a unos metros del arrecife de manchones, que es sin duda el mas visitado de la zona, así los turistas podrán pasar 15 o 20 minutos menos en el arrecife, además todos le tiene mas respeto a un símbolo de esta naturaleza que a las mismas autoridades.

El nunca dudo de cómo se iba a obtener el dinero, ni de la forma de la estructura. Lo primero fue hablar con el gobernador, Ingeniero Mario Villanueva, quien gustoso dio una colaboración. Otro muy participativo fue Fidel Villanueva quien fungía como presidente municipal de Isla Mujeres, y que decir de Salvador Vidal quien se sumo al proyecto, entre otros muchos

Con el dinero recabado se contrato al escultor Enrique Miranda quien también había hecho el Cristo de Cozumel. Fueron muchas las comunicaciones que se dieron, pero por fin el día 17 de agosto de 1994, en medio de una gran algarabía, se sumergió la tan esperada escultura , teniendo como testigo a la comunidad de Isla Mujeres, de Cancún y de varias partes de la Republica. Recuerdo que fue un homenaje único pues el padre José Eduardo Pérez vestido con todos su indumentaria, la bendijo.

Era un espectáculo ver tan soberbia escultura cuidando nuestros mares Pero llego el huracán Gilberto y nuestro símbolo marino de 3 metros de altura y casi una tonelada de peso, no soporto los fuertes vientos, así como la marajada y se rompió.

Una vez mas fue la magia de Ramón Bravo y la generosidad de la gente de Isla Mujeres, en especial de Raúl Magaña, quien fue el que, con su propia gente y dinero, saco, reparo, mejoro y volvió a instalar en el fondo marino a la Cruz de la Bahía, para que desde su morada cuide y proteja a los hombres que se hacen a la mar todos los días a buscar el diario sustento.

Hasta la fecha, cada año nos reunimos a su alrededor varios amigos para agradecer las bondades que nos brinda la Mar.

The idea began to haunt Ramón’s head in 1993, when he saw with sadness how the reefs were being affected and the large fish were beginning to be scarce, with a deep voice he told me, we have to do something to avoid this destruction, for That is why we are going to submerge a religious symbol a few meters from the Manchones reef, which is undoubtedly the most visited in the area, so tourists can spend 15 or 20 minutes less on the reef, in addition, everyone has more respect for a symbol of this nature than to the same authorities.

He never doubted how the money was going to be obtained, nor the form of the structure. The first thing was to speak with the governor, Engineer Mario Villanueva, who gladly gave a collaboration. Another very participative was Fidel Villanueva who served as municipal president of Isla Mujeres, and what to say about Salvador Vidal who joined the project, among many others With the money collected, the sculptor Enrique Miranda was hired, who had also made the Christ of Cozumel.

There were many communications that were given, but finally on August 17, 1994, in the midst of a great uproar, the long-awaited sculpture was submerged, having as a witness the community of Isla Mujeres, Cancun and various parts of the Republic. I remember that it was a unique tribute because Father José Eduardo Pérez, dressed in all his clothes, blessed her.

But Hurricane Gilberto arrived and our marine symbol of 3 meters high and almost a ton of weight, it cannot support the strong winds, as well as the thrashing and it broke.

Once again it was the magic of Ramón Bravo and the generosity of the people of Isla Mujeres, especially Raúl Magaña, who was the one who, with his own people and money, took out, repaired, improved and re-installed on the seabed. to the Cross of the Bay, so that from its abode it cares for and protects the men who go to sea every day in search of daily sustenance.

To date, every year we gather around him several friends to thank the kindness that the Sea offers us.
