UAE NATIONAL DAY The past two months at DBSJP have been packed with events celebrated throughout the whole school. Staff, students, and even parents came together to organise activities for national day. It has become a DBSJP tradition to have the Arabic team perform the UAE national dance, Ayyala, with many students joining in! We also cannot fail to mention the infamous falcon posing with everyone for photos. There was a variety of activities provided to teach everyone about the UAE’s culture, ranging from getting henna tattoos to the luqaimat (a real crowd pleaser). National day does not only act as a day for students to enjoy time off from studying, but it also enriches to students to learn about the deep history and culture of the country that they are residing within.

Shortly after, the festivities began! Starting with the ‘Winter Wonderland’ to the lovely performances by our primary students, it is an understatement to say that DBSJP knows how to spread the holiday cheer. Food trucks, concerts, and festive markets were only some of the activities offered at the Winter Wonderland. Despite a little bit of rain that morning, the sunshine returned, and the show went on!

WINTER WONDERLAND On Friday 17th November, 2023, the much loved ‘Winter Wonderland’ made a comeback to school to encompass the holiday spirit into all DBSJP community members once again. As usual, the event did not fail to administer its usual family-friendly events activities that spark joy in the hearts of children and adults alike. These stations included: a bounce castle, face painting (as beautifully executed by our art department and students), as well as local small businesses selling all different types of products such as jewellery.

A sense of community is always wonderfully established within DBSJP, and Winter Wonderland was no exception to this; this was showcased through a range of displays, from the younger children singing to the crowd, the older students volunteering to work along with the stands, members of our community bringing in delicious baked goods, and the donation table for clothes.

Overall, along with the dazzling lights, the visit from Santa Claus, and the radiating laughter of children and adults echoing around the school; it is undeniable that this year’s Winter Wonderland sparked warmth within all those attending, causing their excitement to only rise further in preparation for their winter break. We can only hope that next year’s event is just as successful as this one was.

Thank you to all the volunteers, stand leaders, and students and guardians that attended, we hope to see you all back against future events at DBSJP.

SPORTS DAY

The time to get some exercise and have fun has begun; students can finally get out of the classroom to jump, shout, and participate in friendly competition against their peers. Sports Day is the one day where students are able to let off some steam and get a workout at the same time!

This year it will be different, this time the students got to choose what sports they would like to compete in, making it more appealing to them. The different year groups had different sports that they were able to

groups so that there could be fair competition amongst the students. Year 4 on the 22nd of January, Year 6 on the 23rd of January, the whole of secondary on the 24th of January, and Years 1 and 2 on the 25th of January in 2024. Then, on the same day, the results were revealed and the house with the most points wins!

Sports Day includes a variety of different activities such as volleyball, football, and others, wherein students can try new things to gain new skill sets. It is something to divert the students’ attention from their studies to give them a break, and might even illuminate a talent that they never knew they had. Sports Day helps to advocate the maintenance of physical health, while also boosting the mental health of students, as it has been scientifically proven that engaging in physical activity improves the happiness of children!

DBSJP ATHLETICS SOAR TO NEW HEIGHTS!

I hope you all are pumped up and ready for some fantastic news about our school’s sports teams! This term has been nothing short of legendary, with visits from lakers superstar, Anthony “The Brow” Davis, the powerhouse US netball team who graciously trained with us, and not one, but two rugby legends.

TRIALS AND TRIUMPHS: DBSJP’S ATHLETIC POWERHOUSE Our sports community is thriving, with an outstanding 1500 students showing up for trials. This term, we fielded a fantastic 41 sports teams, showcasing our diverse range of talent in basketball, football, rugby, swimming and netball.

GETTING 6TH FORM IN THE GAME! A tremendous commendation to Aideen and Mingzhe for involving the 6th form in football, basketball, swimming, netball and rounders. It’s a first for us but we are just getting started.

LEGENDARY RIVALRY: DBSJP VS DBSEH SHOWDOWN! Our girls’ football and netball squads have shown our rival DBS Emirates Hills what we’re made of by winning their first game against them. As we celebrate this win, we’re already gearing up for more victories against our rivals!

To be a good architect, some of the skills that are needed are being able to do 3D modelling digitally (AutoCAD), in order to be able to come up with new designs, understanding construction, being able to do technical drawings, et cetera. These allow architects to realize their designs – making their imagination and ideas a reality.

Although design skills are needed, social and teamwork skills are just as important as one would need to work with others to come up with new and efficient designs – architecture is usually never a one-person job.

GLOBAL EVENTS Starting with National Tree Week, which runs from November 26th to December 3rd. It is the UK's largest annual tree celebration, with thousands of trees planted to mark the start of the tree planting season by the conservation sector, volunteer groups, and tree lovers.

Then comes Elf Day, which is celebrated on December 6th. Elf Day is a holiday in which people dress up as elves and spread holiday cheer. This light-hearted celebration not only brings smiles but also raises awareness and funds for the Alzheimer's Society to help those affected by dementia.

For astronomy enthusiasts, we are celebrating the Winter Solstice Festival which occurs on December 21st in Hong Kong. Traditionally, the festival was a time for fishermen and farmers to prepare for the upcoming colder months.

People in Hong Kong return home for large family meals in modern times. This is followed by the summer solstice, which occurs the following day. It is celebrated similarly; people engage in outdoor activities to make the most of the long sunny day.

The 24th of December - Christmas Eve. Families rejoice in a warm embrace, exchanging gifts and sharing a festive meal, while the warm glow of decorations and flickering candles creates a magical atmosphere. Many people attend midnight church services or participate in cultural traditions to mark the excitement and joy that precede the beloved Christmas Day celebrations.

Following New Year's Eve, we have World Braille Day on January 4th. It is a day to raise awareness about the significance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realisation of human rights for the blind and partially sighted.

Winnie the Pooh Day falls on January 18th, and it honours the timeless charm of A.A. Milne's beloved bear and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, inviting fans to relive the whimsical tales that have captured hearts for generations.

On this day, people of all ages celebrate the spirit of friendship, kindness, and the simple joys found in Winnie the Pooh's enchanting world.

Indian Republic Day, toasted on January 26th, marks the adoption of the Constitution of India. The day is filled with patriotic fervour, culminating in a grand parade in New Delhi that highlights the country's diverse cultures, military prowess, and the spirit of unity that defines the world's largest democracy.

Australia Day, also celebrated on January 26th, pays tribute to the nation's diverse heritage and the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Australians celebrate with parades, events, and barbecues, instilling a sense of national pride while honouring Indigenous cultures that predate European settlement.

COMICS As an avid reader of multiple varying genres, from heartwarming romance to heart-stopping mystery – I love it all!

However, the most underrated medium of literature is undoubtedly… comic books!

Contrary to many opinions, the comic book atmosphere can feature a multiple of genres and tropes that are even found in contemporary literature, such as romance which is particularly favoured by comic writers. This varies from the misconception that comics and graphic novels are exclusive to younger audiences alone.

Linking to the previous ‘Careers’ section of this newsletter, comic books can provide a plethora of job opportunities.

These include authors, producers, editors, and artists. This allows those with a more imaginative mindset, that may lack the ability to create written stories – to completely express themselves in varying and unique forms.

Below, I will recommend graphics novels that I have personally found engaging!

YEAR 8 AND ABOVE! DC: “A Death in the Family”: This iconic comic details the tragic passing of Batman’s second Robin: Jason Todd. In the subsequent comic “Under the Red Hood”, Jason is revived as - the self-explanatory - Red Hood.

Marvel: “Amazing Fantasy (1962) #15” is the origin story of arguably the most infamous superhero to date: Peter Parker, better known as Spider-man! Detailing the key allegorical message: “with great power comes great responsibility”, this is a great comic for anyone with a love of the superhero genre.

Romance: The graphic novel series: “Heartstopper” was recently adapted into a fabulous TV show and entails a high school journey filled with love and self-discovery!

BOOK REVIEW

THE HUNGER GAMES

In light of the new Hunger Games movie- The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes- now is the perfect time to enjoy reading a favorite dystopian series, beginning with Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games. Set in the future, the nation of Panem is divided into 12 districts, ruled from the Capitol. As punishment for a failed revolt, each district is forced to select two tributes, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18, to fight to the death in the annual Hunger Games until there is only one survivor.

It is a dystopian future themed book packed full of adventure and politics. Its protagonist is a girl named Katniss Everdeen, one of my favorite female leads in any book I’ve read. She’s a very independent and pessimistic character, both of which are not commonly seen traits in female leads. She took care of her family from a young age after her father died, and had a hard life growing up which has led her to not trusting people very easily or being very optimistic about life.

Furthermore, there is a wide spectrum of character types to help represent each district. This helps paint a picture to the readers of what life is like in each district. I dislike when a book is solely based on developing romance; The Hunger Games is a breath of fresh air with little to no romance. Romance in the book is almost like an afterthought, but even when it comes into the book it is not a huge part of the book, and is even a little faked.

THE NEW HOUSE PREVIOUSLY: “Ashley….”

“Where did you go?” No reply.

Silence. “Ashley?”

He reaches out to touch the glass and suddenly, the room is left barren. Not a single soul in sight.

The sky glows a light purple with dazzling green, pink, and crimson shades. The sparkling sunlight shines down on the utopian city, reflecting off the blood red lake. In the distance, a little girl is hunched over, bawling her eyes out with a lanky twelve-year-old stood next to her, trying his best to comfort her.

“Where are we?”, Ashley shrieks as tears gather in her eyes, “I have no idea, but I’m going to get us back home”, responds Miles, as he embraces his little sister. Then a towering, ominous figure appears and says, “Welcome to Encrid, The Enchanted City of lost mythical beings. I am the city’s guardian, Manueal. Please state your species and purpose of entry or transit.”

“Did you say.... mythical beings?”, stutters a confused Ashley as her tears slow their trail down on her porcelain face. “Yes-”, responds Manueal just as Miles interrupts, “What do you mean by Enchanted City? We were just sitting in our attic when we saw some weird old mirror and it brought us here. How do we get back?”

Upon hearing this, a look of terror passes over Manueal’s face as he crouches down to the children’s height and lowers his voice as he says, “The Mirror of Enthrallment? You need to come with me NOW! We need to see the princess”. He grabs both their hands in his large fist and taps his staff 3 times as they are whisked away into the air.

NEXT ON, THE NEW HOUSE: “The Mirror of Enthrallment is an ancient artefact that our ancestors used to....”

“If the mirror brought you here.... there is no way back....”
