MEP 2040:

Reducing Building Carbon Footprints and Battling Climate Apathy

DESCRIPTION

The construction and operation of buildings account for nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. While growing awareness has led to voluntary sustainability efforts and stricter codes, many projects still prioritize budget and schedule over carbon reduction. In response, leading engineering firms across the U.S. launched the MEP 2040 initiative to reduce emissions through the design of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. This presentation provides an overview of MEP 2040 and explores strategies for reducing carbon emissions throughout a building’s life cycle.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Understand how MEP engineers address climate change through system design and analysis

• Understand embodied carbon in MEP systems and methods for measuring and managing it.

• Understand building operational carbon and strategies for reducing emissions.

• Learn sustainable design strategies to reduce life cycle carbon while balancing cost and the owner’s goals.
