As we embark on this new term, we’re looking forward to even more projects, programs, and events that will foster stronger bonds among Bosconians. Whether it’s community outreach, professional development, or simply coming together to celebrate our shared roots, the new DBMAAI Board is eager to get started

Bosconians Leading the Way: Atty. Antonio Bernardo and Noel ‘Toti’ Cariño Join Don Bosco Mandaluyong’s Board of Trustees

It is with great pride that we welcome the appointment of two of our most esteemed alumni, Atty. Antonio “Tony” Bernardo (HS Batch 1971) and Noel ‘Toti’ Cariño (HS batch 1973), to the Board of Trustees of Don Bosco Technical College Mandaluyong. FR. Ronilo Javines, SDB, DBTC Rector, announced the appointment of Atty. Tony Bernardo and Toti Carińo recently. Immediately, the two new members of the Zdbtc board of Trustees buckled down to work and met with their fellow BOT members.

Their success in their respective fields and their commitment to the values of Don Bosco make them ideal leaders to help shape the future of our beloved institution. Atty. Antonio Bernardo has established a distinguished career as a legal expert. A proud Bosconian, he has not only made a mark in the legal profession but has also been actively involved in various organizations that promote the betterment of the Filipino community. A former president of tpboth the Don Bosco Alumni Philippines National Federation and the Don Bosco Mandaluyong Alumni Association, Atty. Tony Bernardo spearheaded the creation of the Bosconian International Chamber of Commerce (BICC), the BICC Basketball League, the now defunct Bosconian Savings and Credit Cooperative (BSCC) and the Don Bosco Sports Council. His deep understanding of the law, combined with his leadership roles in different civic and professional groups, makes him a vital addition to the Board. His experience will surely guide our institution in navigating the complexities of modern education and governance.

Meanwhile, Noel ‘Toti’ Cariño, a visionary in the world of real estate and development, brings with him a wealth of experience in business and community leadership. As the Chairman of the Subdivision and Housing Developers Association (SHDA) and long-time president of the Chamber of Real Estate and Builders’ Association (CREBA), Toti has been at the forefront of championing housing and property development initiatives across the country. His extensive background in the real estate sector and his leadership roles in various industry groups highlight his passion for nation-building, which aligns perfectly with Don Bosco’s mission of shaping individuals for both personal success and societal impact. He is also involved in renewable energy’ specifically in solar energy, which ties in very closely with the.e school’s thrust for “integral ecology”.

Atty. Tony Bernardo (top) and Mr. Toti Carińo are the newest members of the DBTC Board of Trustees.

These two accomplished Bosconians have made significant contributions to their fields and have embodied the core values instilled in them by Don Bosco Their addition to the Board of Trustees signifies a bright future for Don Bosco Technical College Mandaluyong as we continue to adapt to the evolving landscape of education while staying true to our core values of faith, family, and service.

We congratulate Atty. Antonio Bernardo and Noel ‘Toti’ Cariño on their well-deserved appointments, and we look forward to the positive changes they will help bring about in our alma mater. Together, let’s support them as they take on this new chapter of leadership, ensuring that the next generation of Bosconians continues to thrive under their guidance

Atty Ton Bernardo and Mr Toti Carińo have buckled down to work, frequently meeting with DBTC Rector Fr Ronilo Javines, SDB and other Salesians and stakeholders (top picture), while also taking time to discuss how to improve the DBMAAI, with President Fletcher Aquino (bottom picture).

DBMAAI joins 42nd National Alumni Convention in Bacolod; Prepares to Host 2025 edition in Mandaluyong

Former Sen. Gregorio Honasan (DB Mandaluyong HS 1965) pose with delegates from Don Bosco Mandaluyong, led by local Salesian delegate, Fr. Demetrio Carmona, SDB, during the 42nd National Convention of Bosconians in Bacolod last June.

The Don Bosco Mandaluyong Alumni Association, Inc. (DBMAAI) sent a contingent led by alumni delegate Fr. Demetrio Carmona, SDB to the 42nd Don Bosco Philippines Alumni National Convention in Bacolod last June. Hosted by the past pupils of Don Bosco Victorias, led by their president, Keith Buyco (who is an alumnus of DBTC Mandaluyong, BS ECE 1996), the Convention had for its theme, “Building the Future –Bosconians Powering the Dreams of Today's Youth”

Speakers of the annual event include Mandaluyong alumnus (HS Batch 1965) former Senatpr Gregorio Honasan, who extolled the virtues of Bosconians as essential in nation-building. Another prominent Bosconian who spoke at the event was Lt. Gen. Roberto Ancan (AFP, retired) who is currently serving as the Senate’s Sergeant-at-Arms.

Monthly Alumni

Mass is Back: Spiritual Nourishment for every Bosconian

Starting in August 2024, the monthly Alumni Mass has returned to Don Bosco Techcal College for all Salesian past pupils to take part in a long-time tradition that was held back during the pandemic. Started by the venerable Fr. Miguel Solaroli, SDB, the third Saturday Mass for alumni aims to bring Bosconians home to participate once more in the Holy Eucharist in a uniquely Bosconian manner.

After the Mass, batch sponsors provide simple refreshments for all attendees as they mingle with each other and reminisce about the good old days in Don Bosco.

for December, the Mass will be held on the 14th (second Saturday) to give way to the Simbang Gabi tradition of Filipinos. This Mass is sponsored by Batch 1999, and shall start at 6pm, after the advent recollection at 3pm at the Mary Help of Christians Chapel (small chapel). Everyone is invited to attend both the recollection and the Mass as a fitting preparation of the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Calling All Bosconians: Let’s Help Upgrade St. Dominic Savio Parish’s Sound System

As we work towards strengthening our alumni network, we also recognize the importance of extending our reach to help others outside the walls of Don Bosco Mandaluyong. In line with this, the Don Bosco Mandaluyong Alumni Association, Inc. (DBMAAI) is proud to announce an ongoing project to support the St. Dominic Savio Parish with a much-needed upgrade of their sound system. Don Bosco Mandaluyong belongs to the parish of St Dominic Savio.

For a parish that serves as a spiritual home to many, having a reliable sound system is essential to ensure that the Mass, celebrations, and community gatherings are heard clearly by everyone. As alumni who have benefited so much from the guidance of Don Bosco, we now have an opportunity to give back by contributing to this worthy cause.

We invite our fellow Bosconians to pitch in and lend a hand. Whether through donations, technical expertise, or spreading the word, your help can make a big difference in ensuring that this project becomes a reality. Let’s show that our commitment to service doesn’t end at the gates of our alma mater—it extends to

If you are interested in joining this effort, please get in touch with the DBMAAI through our alumni office. Together, we can make sure that the sound of faith and fellowship continues to be heard loud and clear at St Dominic Savio Parish and beyond.

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing how the Bosconian spirit can continue to inspire and uplift others.

A Hero Remembered: Commemorating the 40th Death

Anniversary of Roderick Flores

As we revive The Alumni Spark, it is fitting that we also take a moment to honor the memory of one of our own—Roderick Flores, a Bosconian Senior Scout whose life ended heroically 40 years ago. On August 18, 1984, Roderick lost his life while trying to save his fellow Bosconian scouts, a selfless act that forever etched his name in the hearts of the Bosconian community.

At just fifteen years old, Roderick was, in many ways, a typical teenager. He loved sports, dancing, and spending time with his friends after school. But beyond the ordinary, Roderick displayed qualities that set him apart. As a student, he was above average, known for his dedication to his studies and his faith. He was frequently seen visiting the Blessed Sacrament and receiving the Sacraments, a testament to his deep spirituality. Then DBTC rector, Archbishop Francesco Panfilo SDB recalls how Roderick would go to confession every week, before attending Sunday Mass. Such was his dedication to keep himself spiritually clean by regularly taking the sacrament of reconciliation.

Roderick was also a member of the Boy Scouts, embodying the values of service and selflessness that the scouting movement promotes. On that fateful day during a camping trip in Ternate, Cavite, Roderick saw his fellow scouts struggling in the treacherous waves. Without hesitation, he went in to save them, but tragically, he lost his life in the process.

His sacrifice serves as a powerful reminder of what it means to be a Bosconian: to live not just for oneself but for others. Roderick’s courage, compassion, and sense of duty are values that we strive to uphold in our everyday lives, both as individuals and as a community. Although he is from HS Batch 1985, his legacy transcends his time in school. His memory lives on, not only in the hearts of his batch mates but in every Bosconian who is inspired by his story of heroism.

Owing to his heroism and giving up his life so that others may live, there are now moves to get Roderick Flores on the road to sainthood. So if you have documents and stories that will help the process, please do get in touch with the Salesians or with us here at The Alumni Spark.

Last August 17, Archbishop Panfilo, then DBTC principal Fr. Larry Tan, SDB, current rector Fr. Ronilo Javines, SDB and Frs. Eli Cruz SDB and Demetrio Carmona, SDB, concelebrated Roderick Flores’ 40th death anniversary Mass at the school’s !Mary Help of Christians Chapel (small chapel), along with Roderick’s former teachers and batch mates, as well as his mother who flew home from the United States for this occasion. Fittingly, reception followed after the Mass at the Roderick Flores Hall at the DBTC campus.

As we mark 40 years since Roderick’s passing, let us reflect on his bravery and the lasting impact his life has had on the Don Bosco community. May his story continue to inspire us to live with integrity, kindness, and a deep commitment to the service of others.

Let us honor Roderick Flores, not just as a hero but as a true Bosconian whose spirit continues to guide us today.

In Memory of Johnlord Mendoza

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our esteemed board members and a dear friend, Mr. Johnlord Mendoza of DBTC High school Batch 2003, who joined our Creator on June 7, 2024. As one of two Public Relations Officers for the Don Bosco Mandaluyong Alumni Association, Inc. (DBMAAI), Johnlord brought enthusiasm, warmth, and dedication to everything he did.

tAs an officer of the Department of Education (DepEd) in the City of Mandaluyong, he continued to reach out to his alma mater, ensuring that Don Bosco’s Basic Education Department is always in sync and updated with developments in the DepEd.

Johnlord was more than just a fellow Bosconian; he embodied the true spirit of Don Bosco. His passion for teaching was evident in his tireless work to keep the youth engaged and educated. Whether it was through organizing events, helping a brother out, or simply engaging with fellow alumni, he always made sure that the Bosconian flame of camaraderie and service continued to burn brightly.

His vibrant personality, friendly smile, and willingness to lend a helping hand will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Johnlord’s role as a Public Relations Officer of DBMAAI is largely because of his desire to bring us, the alumni closer, fostering the sense of unity that we all treasure.

As we revive The Alumni Spark, we remember Johnlord not only for his hard work but also for the genuine care and kindness he extended to everyone. His legacy of service will remain an inspiration to us all.

To his family and loved ones, we offer our deepest condolences. While we mourn his loss, we take comfort in knowing that his memory will live on in the hearts of his fellow Bosconians. Let us honor his life by continuing the work he started, keeping the DBMAAI as strong and connected as ever.

Rest in peace, Johnlord. You will forever be a part of our Bosconian family.

Lorenzo "Jun" Mariano was a former DBMAAI President (2012-2014). Jun spearheaded the putting up of the blue neon signage of Don Bosco for his high school Batch of 1968, among many generous works in his lifetime. He was a former BICC president, served in the Bosconian Savings and Credit Cooperative, and a pillar of his high school batch. He was a leader, a gentleman, an achiever, a confidante, a friend, a brother, and a true Bosconian.

Renato "Nato" Ong, HS Batch 1971, lived a quiet but very productive retirement. He has been helping the T'boli tribe, an indigenous people, become self sufficient in today's modern world. He has been quietly helping the T'bolis until a vehicular accident took his life a few months ago. He may not have been well known in the Bosconian community, but his service to the community is a clear and remarkable sign of a true Bosconian. May his soul rest in peace.
