Chef Denella celebrates Navajo cuisine while honoring many tribal food systems. Her culinary journey allows you to embrace the history of the Indigenous Food-Ways all while you learn how to prepare unique menu creations.

Learn to make White Sonoran Wheat Berry Micro Green Salad, featuring roasted root vegetables with a lemon pinole honey vinaigrette. Ramona Farms corn pinole is a good source of energy and is of the Akmel O’Odham people.

The desert is filled with greens related to ones you already know from the supermarket. Learn how to find them, cook with them and pair them with other foods in a workshop melding classroom information and a cooking demonstration ending with a tasting of a salad prepared from foraged greens.

Capture the magic of a rare event — the full moon rising and setting sun. Learn about equipment needs, exposure and composing the perfect shot. Cyanotype Photography with Southwest Flora and Fauna | Ryan Parra

Learn all about the historical Cyanotype process, creating a handful of Southwest flora and fauna impressions on pre-coated paper. This camera-less technique involves laying objects on paper coated with a solution of iron salts before exposing it to UV light, and washing with water to create stunning white and Prussian blue images of Southwest specimens, just as the botanist Anna Atkins did 175 years ago.

Winter Birding in Phoenix | Kathe Anderson

With the influx of ducks, shorebirds and oddities (sometimes a Roseate Spoonbill), birding in the Phoenix area can be exceptionally rewarding. Everyone knows the Gilbert Water Ranch, but there is a host of other great sites in and around Phoenix worth exploring. The habitats range from riparian to urban ponds to desert jewels. Introducing Maricopa Audubon’s Birding Phoenix and Maricopa County, AZ guide to sites, Kathe narrows down the dozens of locations in the book to her favorite, must-visit spots in the winter, with tips about accessibility and probable species.

These melodious songsters are popular and widely known from other parts of the United States. However, we have our own collection of this family of birds in Arizona. Concentrating on birds of prey readily found in the Phoenix metropolitan area, this class provides an overview of identifying raptors, not only by size and shape, but by behavior, habitat and season. This class covers categories of raptors such as eagles, falcons, soaring birds and forest hawks, as well as unique species like osprey and northern harrier, plus turkey and black vultures.

Mighty Saguaro | Don Brockway

The saguaro is the icon of the Sonoran Desert that inspires us to appreciate the majesty and beauty of the land that surrounds us. The story of the saguaro starts with thousands of tiny seeds, often spread by birds, with only a few seeds landing safely, germinating and making it to maturity. From there the saguaro becomes home and food to many creatures and slowly grows to tower over all other Sonoran Desert plants.

Chair Yoga

Unwind and connect with nature during a supportive asana chair yoga class. Using a chair for modifications and variations on traditional asana (poses), we’ll explore the best ways to support bodies that struggle with getting to and from the floor or just need a gentler approach to the practice that day. This gentle approach allows practitioners to benefit from the asana while finding a deeper focus on the breath and feeling of stability in the body.

Sulphur Springs Valley Weekend: Cranes, Wine & Archeology | Kathe Anderson and Carlos Oldham

Each winter, a variety of birds, including Sandhill Cranes, raptors, songbirds and waterfowl, gather in the Sulphur Springs Valley of southeastern Arizona. We will look for whatever species of birds we can find in the lovely grasslands and assorted ponds of the area, perhaps witnessing the spectacle of hundreds of cranes landing with their distinctive bugling calls. Explore the Rex Allen Museum and Amerind Museum and sample wines at a local vineyard to round out the weekend. Trip leaders are Kathe Anderson, field guide and instructor, and Carlos Oldham, Garden docent and former president of Audubon Society of Portland, Oregon.

FRAMERATE: Desert Pulse, a multi-sensory art exhibit by ScanLAB Projects, invites visitors into the visual and emotional energy of the Sonoran Desert. Through photography, LiDAR scanning, motion and sound, it reveals new ways of seeing and deepens appreciation for our vibrant ecosystem.

Join us for an unforgettable underwater adventure! Experience Rusalka: The Littlest Mermaid is a magical, child-friendly opera about courage, transformation and following your dreams. Based on Han Christian Anderson’s classic fairytale “The Little Mermaid” and composer Antonín Dvorák’s masterpiece, Rusalka, this enchanting performance is perfect for sparking young imaginations.

$12 per student. Chaperone and teachers complimentary

Discover the beauty of the desert with a teacher-led field trip to Desert Botanical Garden. Teachers and their students will embark on a journey to experience unique plants and Sonoran Desert, while connecting with nature and outdoor exploration.

REFUND & CANCELATION POLICY

Refunds

Refunds can be issued for classes or cancelations with more than five business days’ notice. Please send your request to registrar@dbg.org or call 480.941.1225..

Note: Due to booking costs, Travel & Adventure class refunds in Adult Education are limited to 70% of the total price.

Cancelations

Desert Botanical Garden reserves the right to cancel programs at its discretion. Programs will run as scheduled, regardless of weather, unless participants are contacted directly by Garden staff either by phone or email. We reserve the right to substitute any instructors in the event of unforeseen circumstances.
