2026 Annual Report

Page 1

When you walk our trails at first light — before the crowds, before the heat, before the world has fully woken — the Garden feels almost ancient. Quiet. Patient. Eternal.

In my first months as CEO, this is the part of the Garden I’ve fallen most deeply in love with: the way it holds time differently. A cactus that has weathered a century stands beside a seedling just beginning its life. A family making memories steps past a researcher discovering something new. Volunteers who have given decades of service cross paths with children seeing saguaros for the very first time.

If you pause even briefly, you can feel the thread that stitches all those experiences together — a sense that this place is not simply visited but lived with. Guarded. Celebrated. Beloved.

In 2025, we welcomed more than 650,000 guests, and repeatedly, we saw the Garden become exactly what people needed: something real and rooted in an increasingly fast and fragile world.

At the end of the year, we also introduced FRAMERATE: Desert Pulse, bringing the desert to life on larger-than-life LED screens.

As we prepare to roll out the strategic plan for the Garden’s next 15 years, I’m holding tightly to that sense of timelessness. The plan will be ambitious — as it should be. It will call us to elevate our collections, expand our research, ignite new learning journeys and open the Garden to more people and more communities than ever before. And we will pursue all of it with purpose and urgency.

But at its heart, this plan is rooted in one simple idea: The desert deserves champions. And people deserve a place that helps them fall in love with it.

For now, I want to offer my gratitude. The Garden has stood here for nearly a century. With your support, it will stand for centuries more. And long after all of us, these trails will still carry stories, still sparking curiosity, still revealing a beauty that feels both ancient and entirely new.

I’m honored to walk into that future with you.

A GARDEN of growth

Desert Botanical Garden is closer to achieving its goal of becoming a global leader in desert plant conservation through the completion of Phase 2 of the $15 million Hazel Hare Center for Plant Science. With deep gratitude, the Garden celebrates this milestone as a testament to the passion, commitment and shared belief in protecting the desert’s most extraordinary plants.

Art and science come together inside The RAF Exhibit Gallery. Dedicated in March, it is a distinctive 2,400-square-foot, climatecontrolled, adaptive space designed to help visitors slow down, look closer and connect with the desert in new ways. The vision for the gallery began more than a decade ago to showcase innovative exhibitions that blend scientific discovery, diverse beauty and unique characteristics of the Sonoran Desert.

Longtime supporters, Garden Trustee

Rebecca Ailes-Fine and her husband, Peter Fine, recognized the need for this versatile space as part of the Garden experience and made a generous commitment to bring this dream to reality years earlier than originally planned. In recognition of their leadership at the Garden and throughout the community, the Garden nominated the couple as the 2025 Outstanding Philanthropists by the Greater Phoenix Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The inaugural exhibition in The RAF Exhibit Gallery, Orchid Fever, featured 3,000 orchids representing 18 species, highlighting the Garden’s efforts to protect the tiniest of desert orchids: the Canelo Hills ladies’-tresses (Spiranthes delitescens).

Trustee Emeritus Barton Faber and his wife, Elizabeth Byrnes, in recognition of their appreciation for the Fines and their commitment to conservation, sponsored this inaugural exhibition. Arizona isn’t usually associated with the vibrant, fragrant plant, but the couple’s involvement with The Nature Conservancy and deep understanding of the Garden’s research initiatives inspired the exhibition.

Reading, learning and education have always been very important. Children learn better when they see something that interests them instead of just being preached to. I wanted to incorporate that concept, and the exhibit gallery gave us the perfect opportunity to do so."
Rebecca Ailes-Fine

I grew up in Arizona. The Sonoran Desert is one of the most beautiful, rich environments in the world, and I want to see as much of it preserved and healthy as possible.” – Barton Faber

“It was significant that the Garden not only featured orchids for their beauty, but also to educate visitors on the conservation work with these endangered species,” says Faber. “The Garden has been working on reintroducing this orchid in the wild for well over 15 years.”

Further gratitude is extended to the Patel Family Foundation, led by Ashok and Rita Patel, for their support of The RAF Exhibit Gallery.

Outside The RAF Exhibit Gallery is another work of art: the Ahearn Portal, a reimagined area designed by renowned designer Tres Fromme, that orients visitors to venues and facilities on the East campus of the Garden.

Longtime Garden supporters, Susan and Bill Ahearn, funded this space to create a welcoming experience for visitors with a design inspired by Arizona hallmarks: native flagstone, boulder outcroppings and rock terraces indigenous peoples used to grow domesticated agaves. It features a calming waterfall and more than 600 plant specimens from the Garden’s living collection, including a variety of native agave species, some of which were described by Garden botanists.

Since 1970, Susan and Bill Ahearn have supported the Garden, and Susan has volunteered for 35 years in the Garden’s research department and as a horticulture aide. Over the years, she recognized the need to modernize aging facilities and establish a central hub for essential operations as part of plans for the Hazel Hare Center for Plant Science. After years of planning and construction, the Ahearn Horticulture Center was dedicated in the summer of 2025, thanks to Susan and Bill’s transformational philanthropy.

We always like to fund projects that are behind the scenes, that are a hard sell for the general public.” – Susan Ahearn

This 6,000-square-foot facility provides a unified, energized workspace for the Garden’s horticulture staff and volunteers. It includes specialized workspaces for plant care and propagation, an irrigation workshop, space for arboriculture projects and extensive tool storage. Although the building is not visible to guests, it plays a vital role in advancing the Garden's goal to become a global leader in desert plant conservation.

A lot of people don’t think about what it takes to maintain the Garden or to conduct all the research that is being done here.” – Bill Ahearn

Their generosity has created a foundation that will support the Garden’s mission for generations.

Across from the Ahearn Horticulture Center is the 12,000-square-foot Shade Pavilion, a cutting-edge structure that provides optimal conditions for growing and maintaining the cactus and agave collections, along with space for propagating plants.

Completion of Phase 2 of the Hazel Hare Center for Plant Science was made possible not just by the vision and dedication of individuals but also by the extraordinary generosity of foundation and corporate supporters, whose combined gifts totaled $1.15 million. Investments from the Kemper & Ethel Marley Foundation, Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust and Salt River Project reflect a profound trust in the Garden to advance the future of desert conservation.

Children Served Through Annual Programs

At the Garden, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door, it blooms along the trails. When the Children’s Education and Marketing teams came together to create Cactus Keepers, a hands-on activity book, it sparked curiosity far beyond its pages, earning a nomination for the Arizona Forward Environmental Excellence Award.

That same spirit of collaboration reached local classrooms. Through a growing partnership with the Balsz School District, the Garden reimagined guided field trips, welcoming elementary students into immersive outdoor lessons that led to the Garden being honored as a Community Champion.

In the summer, the Garden’s volunteers carried that mission into the night. Their dedication brought Flashlight Nights to life, an unforgettable summer experience that revealed desert wildlife after dark and earned New Times’ Best of Phoenix award for Best Nighttime Experience with Wildlife.

Together, these moments tell one story: when education, community and passion unite, the Garden becomes a place where discovery thrives day and night.

HONORING legacies

Like many visitors to the Garden, Dr. Mary Jean Connell found calm and comfort in its beautiful, lush surroundings. Following her untimely passing, Connell’s husband, Jeremy Mussman, wanting to share her deep love of the Garden with others, made a donation to carry on her legacy. The Mary Jean Connell Sensory Garden, a peaceful space in the Center for Desert Living Trail, was dedicated in her honor in October.

Gardening was also one of Suzanne (“Zannie”) Williams Richards’ many passions, evidenced by her enthusiastic support of the Garden for over three decades. Inspired by their mother’s love of wildflowers, Richards’ sons Bruce Williams, D. Clinton Williams and Bradford Williams wanted to share that passion with the community. With their donation, the Suzanne Williams Richards Memorial Garden, located along the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Trail, was dedicated in November. Their hope is not only to honor their mother’s memory but also to create a meaningful space for the Garden’s many visitors.

PATRONS CIRCLE

Patrons Circle reached a milestone in 2025 and now has more than 500 households. Each of these generous supporters contributes $1,500 or more annually to strengthen education, research, exhibits and plant conservation at the Garden. Their philanthropic commitment helps protect the Sonoran Desert landscape, with over $1 million raised each year.

Longtime supporter Connie Binns remembers the community’s humble beginnings over three decades ago.

“What was so wonderful about it was that you got to know everyone, and there was this grand intimacy that you were associating with people who loved the Garden and conservation,” says Binns.

The donor community now known as Patrons Circle began in the 1980s when Trustee Emerita Nancy Swanson started the group alongside longtime supporter Roy Papp. They modeled it after similar programs at other Valley nonprofits. They encouraged their friends to join by inviting them to special events, such as Dinner on the Desert, as well as lectures, tours and group trips to locations around the world.

Jim Binns, Connie Binns, Barbara Ottosen, Gena Bonsall and Don Ottosen at Luminarias Party.

“We looked for ways to find plant-lovers and encourage them to support the Garden,” says Binns. “By doing different types of events, like Plant Sale Previews and Luminarias Party dinners, you attract different people.”

Swanson chaired the first Patrons Circle excursion in 2010. “It was that first trip we did to England,” recalls Swanson. “People still mention to me how they got to visit the Chelsea Flower Show early and have a private tour. It became a cornerstone of Patrons Circle that attracted many people over the years."

While Swanson's participation in the Garden has evolved over the decades, she continues to serve as a docent, often on the Plants and People of the Sonoran Desert trail, which she also created in the 1980s.

Connie and her husband Jim continue to support the Garden through Patrons Circle, not just for the events, but also for the camaraderie she finds in the group and the peace she feels in such a beautiful space.

Nancy Swanson “
You leave all the troubles of the world behind, and you're in a serene environment with like-minded people who are conservationists, and staff members who love where they work. It's a gem in the middle of the desert.”

FOOD OASIS A thriving

Once upon a time, an under utilized parcel of land in south Phoenix has grown into a thriving community agricultural hub. Spaces of Opportunity is a 19-acre community farm that supports sustainable food production, farmer incubation and access to fresh, locally grown produce. Through long-standing partnerships with the Garden, Roosevelt School District and other community collaborators, Spaces continues to advance communitydriven food systems in south Phoenix.

In March, Maria Valenzuela was appointed Executive Director of Spaces. Her background is rooted in advancing food access and preventative health education, with an emphasis on collaborative, community-driven systems. Last year, Spaces held nine farmers markets and supported 30 farmers and incubator participants.

Also in March, the Fund the Farm Celebration, was held with more than 500 guests enjoying live music from local bands and delicious local food around the Garden. This annual fundraiser supported the collaborative work at Spaces.

Trustee Jenny Holsman Tetreault chaired the annual event alongside a dedicated committee to share with supporters the impact of Spaces.

I think ensuring places like Spaces of Opportunity exist for our community is so critical. Seeing the partnership and collaboration with the Garden is important, and speaks to our family in terms of giving and then raising the visibility of that program.”

RESEARCH, CONSERVATION & COLLECTIONShighlights

In 2025, the Garden advanced critical research and community-driven conservation initiatives that strengthen our understanding of desert ecosystems and support the long-term health of iconic species. The following highlights represent just a portion of the impactful work made possible through dedicated partners, volunteers and supporters.

Advancing Monarch Research

The Garden made significant strides in monarch conservation by piloting innovative radio-tag technology developed by Cellular Tracking Technologies. Five monarchs were fitted with radio tags, including one individual detected onsite for 29 days through the Project Monarch app. An additional 30 monarchs were tagged with paper tags in partnership with the Southwest Monarch Study. Together, the Garden and Southwest Monarch Study also conducted the region’s first evaluation of radio-tagging methods and their effects on monarch longevity using captive monarchs in the Cohn Family Butterfly Pavilion.

Saguaro Census

The Saguaro Census continued to grow as a powerful community-science initiative, uniting residents across the Valley to document where saguaros are thriving, struggling or disappearing. These long-term ecological observations provide essential data that guide conservation strategies, restoration planning and policy decisions. In 2025, 218 observers documented 13,918 saguaros across the region, marking another milestone year for this collaborative effort.

This program was funded by the Arizona Lottery Gives Back program.

A year of care

FOR THE GARDEN’S LIVING COLLECTION

The Horticulture team at Desert Botanical Garden played a vital role in stewarding one of the world’s most significant desert plant collections this year. A dedicated staff of 24 horticulturists cared for all plants across the Garden’s living collections, ensuring the health, resilience and beauty of desert flora from around the globe. Through daily monitoring and adaptive care practices, the team supported both long-established specimens and emerging plantings.

In 2025, the horticulture team successfully planted 22 new trees and nine new saguaros, strengthening the Garden’s conservation and research goals. Sustainability remained a top priority, with water-wise practices resulting in an estimated 6,500 gallons of water saved compared to previous years. Following seasonal storms, horticulturists also rescued and stabilized 207 plants after the Oct. 13 microburst, minimizing loss and accelerating recovery across the landscape.

The Garden welcomed 12,000 visitors at its semi-annual plant sales. Together, these efforts reflect the Garden’s continued commitment to conservation-driven horticulture, climate-responsive practices and exceptional plant care in an increasingly challenging desert environment.

DESERTexperiences

2025 delivered one of the most vibrant and well-attended years in the Garden’s recent history. A renewed focus on immersive exhibits, community engagement and wow moments welcomed visitors from around the world and inspired a connection with nature.

Majestic Mariposas

The spring and fall butterfly exhibits in the Cohn Family Butterfly Pavilion once again captivated visitors of all ages. Featuring hundreds of native and tropical butterflies in carefully curated garden habitats, the exhibits offered close-up encounters and educational insights into pollinator conservation. Visitors learned about the butterfly life cycle in the Diana E. and Paul B. Smith Butterfly Nursery and witnessed butterflies emerging from their chrysalis.

Dinner on the Desert

In April, more than 500 donors enjoyed a memorable evening underneath the starry spring sky at the 2025 Dinner on the Desert. One of the Valley’s most treasured events, supporters were inspired by Light Bloom and Orchid Fever exhibitions and were delighted with live entertainment, providing a perfect ambiance around the Garden.

The Garden’s annual gala raised more than $500,000 to support desert plant conservation, and the silent auction raised more than $150,000 through unique and exclusive experiences and one-of-a-kind artwork.

Trustee Adriana Murrietta chaired this year’s event, which marked the final Dinner on the Desert for Executive Director Ken Schutz, who retired in September after 24 years of service. “As chair of this year’s Dinner on the Desert, it was an honor to carry forward a beloved Garden tradition that Ken helped shape with such vision and heart,” says Murrietta.

Surrounded by the elegance of orchids and the beauty of the desert in bloom, the evening was a tribute to both our roots and our continued growth.” – Adriana Murrietta

Desert Pulse Unveiled

The celebrations continued into October, when the Garden unveiled the FRAMERATE: Desert Pulse exhibit with a Patrons Circle reception chaired by Trustee Ann Stanton.

Ann is also the chair of the board's Art Advisory Committee, which led the effort to commission this multi-sensory exhibit to showcase the fragility, beauty and resilience of the Sonoran Desert through cutting-edge technology that captures the rhythms of nature into a powerful visual journey.

Patrons Circle donors didn’t let the threat of rain put a damper on the opening reception. Attendees explored the art throughout the Garden to experience the exhibit before its public opening. Inside Dorrance Hall, donors heard directly from the London-based artists of ScanLAB Projects about the three-year process.

You can count on our Patrons Circle events to be something special. This unique exhibition stood apart from others by giving visitors an opportunity to reflect on how the desert is evolving.” – Ann Stanton

VOLUNTEERS in the Garden

Volunteers are essential to the success of Desert Botanical Garden, contributing their time and expertise in ways that support both daily operations and long-term sustainability. Many volunteers also deepen their commitment by making a planned gift, some during their lifetimes and others through bequests that benefit the Garden after their passing, ensuring continued support for the Garden’s mission for years to come.

Volunteer Spotlight: Lasting Service at Desert Botanical Garden

In 2025, the Garden would like to recognize individuals whose dedication reflects this long-term vision, including both living supporters and those we remember with gratitude.

Dr. Joy Bunt: Decades of Dedication

Dr. Joy Bunt has supported Desert Botanical Garden for more than 25 years and has volunteered as a docent for nearly as long. She and her wife, Dr. Linda Turley have been Patrons Circle donors since 2014. Joy shared that she has included the Garden in her estate plans. Through this forward-looking commitment, she has demonstrated remarkable generosity and ensured a future gift that will create a lasting legacy of support for the Garden.

InMEMORY

In Memory of Gene Almendinger

Mary Jo and Eugene “Gene” Almendinger were devoted Volunteers in the Garden (VIG) who shared a deep connection to Desert Botanical Garden. Gene was also an accomplished photographer, and several of his photographs continue to be displayed in the Desert House Conference Room.

After Mary Jo passed away unexpectedly in 2009, Gene remained actively involved as a volunteer and supporter for many years. In 2016, he established a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) to support the Garden’s endowment. When Gene passed away in June, the Garden received a generous gift from his IRA in addition to the CGA. The Almendingers’ generosity will support the Garden well into the future.

Many longtime volunteers remember Gene for his dedicated involvement, genuine care for the Garden and striking photography, especially of cactus blooms.

FINANCIAL REPORT 2025

We are pleased to share with members, donors and friends the Garden’s financial statements for the fiscal year that ended September 30, 2025. The Garden built on last year's success by introducing Light Bloom, the enchanting works of HYBYCOZO, the Garden’s first orchid show, Orchid Fever, and the completion of Phase 2 of the Hazel Hare Center for Plant Science. These efforts have allowed the Garden to see continued growth in both the diversity of our audience and overall attendance.

The Consolidated Statement of Activities shows total revenues for the year exceeded total expenditures by $4.8 million. This was driven by positive admissions, membership, contributions and special events.

STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL ACTIVITIES

Revenue

in Net Assets: $4,763,470

The Garden’s expenditures continue to be managed with careful stewardship in mind, while at the same time seizing opportunities for improvement, growth and greater mission impact.

The Consolidated Statement of Financial Position shows the Garden’s financial position remains solid, with total assets exceeding $86 million and total liabilities of approximately $6.4 million and no debt. Unrestricted cash and Boarddesignated cash, totaling $21 million, are sufficient for normal operations and to fund the repair and maintenance of major building systems as facilities age.

The Garden Foundation manages endowment assets conservatively with an annual target of a 4.25 percent distribution from the Foundation to the Garden’s operating budget. The Garden’s financial health and success in achieving its mission would not be possible without your commitment, dedication and generosity. On behalf of the Board, staff and volunteers, we extend our gratitude for all that you do for the Garden.

The Consolidated Statement of Financial Activities reports the results of Garden Operations excluding the effect of depreciation expense. Depreciation refers to the systematic allocation of the cost of long-lived assets, including buildings, furniture, fixtures, and equipment, to the periods that benefit from their use. Recording depreciation has no effect on the liquidity or cash flow of the Garden. It reflects an estimate of the using up of the economic value of tangible assets. In the financial statements it reduces the Change in Net Assets (and, therefore, Total Net Assets) and the carrying basis of Property and Equipment.

Unlike for-profit firms, not-for-profit organizations generally do not provide for the addition or replacement of major long-lived assets out of operations. Historically such entities look to capital contributions for those improvements. Hence, the financial performance for not-for-profits is best evaluated by analyzing operating results excluding the effects of depreciation. Depreciation expense recognized in the Garden’s records for 2025 was $1.67 million.

Independent Auditors’ Report | Desert Botanical Garden, Inc. and Affiliates received an unmodified opinion from its independent auditors, CBIZ CPAs, P.C., on the audit of Desert Botanical Garden, Inc. and Affiliates’ consolidated financial statements as of and for the year ended September 30, 2025.
