When I think about the word garden, I think of adjectives such as peaceful, cool, calm, comforting, relaxing, a hidden spot of solace, a place to ponder the world around us. The pandemic took away from our vocabulary many of those feelings. While we are still practicing several of the same safe behaviors that were pandemic-initiated, we can now stroll through the Garden and begin to feel and experience those adjectives listed above. It has been too long, and we are all delighted to be back!

Did you know desert plants have very shallow roots?

Please stay on the trails at all times, so you do not damage the plants.

Which way to go? The Garden features five thematic trails, each color-coded on your map and on signs throughout the Garden. Find your location on pages 15 and 16.

Feeling hot? Make sure to stay hydrated, protect your skin with sunscreen and hats, cool off in shady spots and don't be shy to ask for help from a staff member.

Did you know the cactus family is among the five most threatened groups of living organisms?

Feeling thirsty? Make sure you stay hydrated with our water refill stations marked on pages 15 and 16.

How great was your day? Turn your admission into a membership on the same day of your visit, and enjoy the Garden for free all year, as well as discounts in the Garden Shop, event tickets and classes.

Many of our plants look soft, but they do bite. Please look, but don't touch.

Need a hand?

BECOME A CITIZEN SCIENTIST Attention citizen scientists! Desert Botanical Garden needs your help to find and photograph the plants, animals and insects in your neighborhood, on local trails and around town. In doing so, you are helping the Garden and the Central Arizona Conservation Alliance with a new initiative, the EcoFlora project, to take inventory of the plants and wildlife in the Phoenix metro area.

In four easy steps, you can get started: STEP ONE Download the iNaturalist app to your smart phone, or visit the iNaturalist website, inaturalist.org.

STEP T WO Create an account with your email and an iNaturalist username and password.

STEP THREE Join the Metro Phoenix EcoFlora project.

In the app: Tap “More,” then “Projects,” and search for Metro Phoenix EcoFlora. Tap “Join.”

On the website: Search Metro Phoenix EcoFlora and click “Join” at the top right of the banner.

STEP FOUR Make observations and share what you’ve found on iNaturalist.

Take photos of plants, animals and insects and upload them.

Your observations are automatically included in the Metro Phoenix EcoFlora project.

Surrounded by the lush desert landscape with the setting sun as a backdrop, Ib Andersen’s vision for dance in the desert continues in 2021. Expect the unexpected as Ballet Arizona evolves, takes chances, and challenges the boundaries of contemporary ballet in the desert that we call our home.

Bringing The Garden Home: Build a Birds Nest With Your Kids

Birds build nests to create a safe, warm place to lay eggs and raise their young. With the children in your life, take a moment to observe photos of nests online. What do you notice? How are they similar? How are they different?

Using natural materials from your backyard or household items, design and build a nest inspired by nature.

Extension: Ready for more? Create a giant nest for your human family. What does your family need to stay safe and warm?

Wind Chimes are often used in sound meditation sessions. Whether they are specifically tuned or full of overtone sounds, they can be a helpful tool to support meditation.

Birds are one of the best sound healers in nature. Open a window and sit comfortably by it.

Play your favorite song while sitting on your patio or in your backyard. Meditation is all about letting your mind free itself from the constant thoughts and worries of our day.

Water can be very meditative. Find sounds of rain or water running on YouTube. Water washes away the old and makes room for the new.

PLANT RESCUERS Did you know the Garden not only displays desert plants, but it also rescues them? Discover just a few of the ways that the Garden is saving desert species.

GREAT MILKWEED GROW OUT Monarch butterfly populations have decreased by as much as 90% in recent years. The Garden is helping by growing and researching monarch’s favorite plant—milkweed.

CANELO HILLS LADIES’-TRESSES ORCHID | After not being seen in the wild for five years, Garden scientists went on the search for this southern Arizona orchid.

After months of looking, the scientists found the orchid in a private lot, where they collected seeds to save the species.

HEDGEHOG CACTUS | The Garden was tapped to move hedgehog cactus from harm's way while a new bridge was being constructed. These cactus are a federally endangered species and only grow in small parts of Arizona. As you can see below, they are rooted very nicely in their new home.
