QEP PROGRAM EXPANSION! In Fall of 2023, Aspire to Be Hired expanded services to the Health Science division by adding embedded QEP course content and assignments into the Associates Degree Nursing, and Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) Programs.

The Career Services Center continues to provide enhanced services such as resume workshops, mock interviews, specialized job fairs, and individual coaching to all Health Science students. The Career Services team also launched the use of Skills First- Master Your Story Resume Builder in Fall of 2023. We are excited to have this high level platform to assist all students in navigating their way to a rewarding career!

NCTC AND THE ASPIRE TO BE HIRED PROGRAM WAS NOMINATED FOR A 2023 BELLWETHER AWARD! These nationally recognized awards are given to outstanding and innovative programs in community college education. Winners were announced recently (February 28) at the CCFA annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas. Rose Martinez, Ph.D., director for the Bellwether College Consortium, shared, “The level of program innovation and success shared by the winners was exceptional. We are proud of our 30 Bellwether Finalist teams who work tirelessly to scale programs and practices that affect thousands of students. The impactful results are students from low-income communities thriving academically and in the workforce.”

Ten finalists representing 13 states and 24 community colleges were selected to compete in one of three categories: Instructional Programs and Services, co-sponsored by the National Council of Instructional Administrators; Planning, Governance, and Finance, co-sponsored by the National Council for State Directors of Community Colleges; and Workforce Development, co-sponsored by the National Council for Continuing Education and Training. Bellwether Finalists presented their programs at the Program Show Case and Assembly.

North Central Texas College-Aspire to be Hired Program was selected as a top 10 Finalist in the Instructional Programs and Services category.

Aspire to be Hired focuses on students’ employability skill development through evidence-based training modules embedded into the course curriculum and structured support opportunities. The program promotes students’ marketability and preparedness by

1) building their awareness of the importance and impact of employability skills, 2) improving their ability to articulate these skill sets, and 3) offering opportunities to apply professional skills and knowledge. The overarching goal of NCTC’s Aspire to be Hired Program is to remove barriers and reduce the skills gap to improve students’ long-term employability and overall success.

The NCTC team was led by Amy Klohn, Student Services Director, along with Shannon Solomon, Career Services Manager, Donna Uptergrove, Director of Grants, and Brianna Jones, Marketing Specialist and an Aspire to be Hired NCTC student. The team shared the overall program including the development, implementation, and need to address a critical issue in our community and with workforce and industry partners. Brianna Jones shared her perspective as a student and how she utilized the professional skills training to move into a position in the NCTC Marketing department. The Aspire to be Hired Program helps fulfill an important part of the college’s mission and values through the awareness, articulation, and application of professional and employability skills.
