Continued from Page 1 King, Jr.’s actual birthdate. Despite the cold, over 200 citizens gathered to promote love and unity. The march began 10:00am at the Charles R. Drew Health Center, 1323 W. Third St. and ended at Sinclair Community College, 444 W. Third St. Dion Green, a survivor of the 2019 Oregon shooting, released a white turtledove at the Third Street bridge.

As we marched together, people sang such songs as “This Little Light of Mine”, “We Shall Overcome”, “Happy Birthday” to Dr. King. The cold did not stop the warmth and love witnessed in each step of the marchers.

An outstanding MLK Youth Celebration program commenced at Sinclair Community College after the march. The Master of Ceremonies was Noble Peoples and Mistress of Ceremonies was Annastasia Freemen.

Dr. Anthony Whitmore, President of MLK Dayton, provided the welcome and greetings. Annastasia Freeman sang the Negro National Anthem and a phenomenal speech.

Entertainment was provided by Jayden Perry whose message through song about the meaning

of life, love, and survival captured the hearts of many. Spoken Word was provided by the impressive Maitreya Satterfield.

Following their program, the youth attend a movie at the Neon Theatre entitled “The Hate U Give” . Discussion ensued, sharing painful facts of life experiences in minority communities compared to other more affluent communities and lifestyle. Youth were given the opportunity to express themselves while mindfully examining ways to stand for what is just and right for humanity at large.

The annual MLK Day Celebration Banquet was held Monday evening at The Masonic Center, 525 W. Riverview Ave at 6:00pm. The program included; Master of Ceremonies was Ali Shakhbandarov, Cochair of ATACC, Playing of Shofar – Mekhi Coleman, Presentation of Colors – Wright Patterson Air Force Base Honor Guard, National Anthem and Negro Anthem – Andrea Blake, Introduction of Dias – Ali Shakhbandarov, Welcome – Fatimah Gula, Statement of Occasion – Rev. Dr. Junior F. Greenlee, Emeritus, MLK Board Chair. Greetings

The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) will hold a virtual Public Participation Meeting to present a DRAFT of the Priority Climate Action Plan (PCAP). MVRPC has developed the first regional greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory, and compiled strategies for lowering emissions suggestions from member jurisdictions and national models. The purpose of this planning effort is to explore approaches the Region can take to contribute to national goals to reduce GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 and to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

With Inflation Reduction Act funding from US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), planning support from Sustainability Solutions Group and in partnership with communities and park districts from across the Miami Valley, MVRPC has been leading a regional effort to develop the Region’s first Climate Action Plan.

She was as eloquent, fluent, and articulate as we remembered her. Dr. Harris shared examples of how hate was not welcomed or tolerated in her personal and professional life. She remains a positive role model of love, hope and unification in communities across America. While we have come a long way, there is still work to be done to en-

sure beloved communities exist – communities that include diversity and allow for tension undergirded by love and unity, leading to positive transformation.

Deadly Home Fires Across U.S. Underscore Increased Risks During Winter Months

In response to the deadly home fires that have occurred in the past week, the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) is reminding the public about the increased risk of home fires during the winter months, along with simple but critical ways to prevent them and stay safe.

According to NFPA, heating equipment is the leading cause of U.S. home fires between December and January, while cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fires year-round. The thirdleading cause of home fires is electrical equipment, with three in 10 electrical fires occurring between November and February. Also, more than a third (34 percent) of Christmas tree home fires occur in January.

“As the new year has unfolded, several home fires, including ones that have been reported in California, Connecticut, and Minnesota, have underscored the deadly impact that these fires can have,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of NFPA Outreach and Advocacy. She noted that with colder temperatures across much of the country and fewer hours of sunlight, people are spending more time indoors. That means home heating systems are in greater use, electricity is used more hours of the day, and, in many cases, households are doing more cooking.

“On top of these risk factors, many homes may still have holiday decorations up, which pose potential fire risks as well, particularly dry Christmas trees,” said Carli.

NFPA offers the following guidelines and recommendations to reduce the risk of home fires during the winter months: Heating safety: Make sure all heating equipment is in good working order. Heating systems and chimneys should be cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.

Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from all heating equipment, including furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and space heaters.

Always use the right kind of fuel, as specified by the manufacturer, for fuel-burning space heaters.

Make sure space heaters are in good working order and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to sleep.

Keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.

Electrical safety:

Only use one heat-producing appliance (such as a coffeemaker, toaster, space heater, etc.) plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time.

Check electrical cords to make sure they are not running across doorways or under carpets.

Extension cords are intended for temporary use.

Have a qualified electrician add more receptacle outlets so you don’t have to use extension cords.

Call a qualified electrician or your landlord if you have frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers; a tingling feeling when you touch an electrical appliance; a discolored or warm wall outlet; a burning or rubbery smell coming from an appliance; flickering or dimming lights; or sparks from an outlet.

Cooking safety: Keep a close eye on what you’re cooking; never leave cooking food unattended. For foods with longer cook times, such as those that are simmering or baking, set a timer to help monitor them carefully.

Clear the cooking area of combustible items, keeping anything that can burn - such as dish towels, oven mitts, food packaging, and paper towels - at least three feet away from cooking equipment.

Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Keep a lid nearby when cooking.

If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.

Create a “kid and pet free zone” of at least three feet around the cooking area and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

Smoke alarms, which reduce the risk of dying in a fire by more than half (54 percent), must be installed in all required locations and working properly. Home escape planning is another critical element of home fire safety, as people may have as little as two minutes to escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds.

Knowing what to do when the smoke alarm sounds and using that time wisely is critical to safety.

“Our goal is to make sure people know what the main causes of winter home fires are and how to prevent them,” said Carli.

“A little added awareness, effort, and planning can go a long way toward minimizing those risks.”

NFPA offers a wealth of home heating safety tips, information, and resources to help better educate the public about ways to safely heat their homes.

In addition, NFPA’s “Put a Freeze on Winter Fires” campaign with the U.S. Fire Administration works to promote a host of winter safety issues, including home heating.

"I Have a Dream" by Martin Luther King Jr.

"I Have a Dream" is a public speech that was delivered by American civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963, in which he called for civil and economic rights and an end to racism in the United States. Delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., the speech was a defining moment of the civil rights movement and among the most iconic speeches in American history.

Beginning with a reference to the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed millions of slaves in 1863, King said "one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free". Toward the end of the speech, King departed from his prepared text for a partly improvised peroration on the theme "I have a dream", prompted

by Mahalia Jackson's cry: "Tell them about the dream, Martin!" In this part of the speech, which most excited the listeners and has now become its most famous, King described his dreams of freedom and equality arising from a land of slavery and hatred. Jon Meacham writes that, "With a single phrase, Martin Luther King Jr. joined Jefferson and Lincoln in the ranks of men who've shaped modern America". The speech was ranked the top American speech of the 20th century in a 1999 poll of scholars of public address.

Speech Widely hailed as a masterpiece of rhetoric, King's speech invokes pivotal documents in American history, including the Declaration of Independence, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the United States Constitution.

Early in his speech, King alludes to Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address by saying "Five score years ago ..." In reference to the abolition of slavery articulated in the Emancipation Proclamation, King says: "It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity."

Anaphora (i.e., the repetition of a phrase at the beginning of sentences) is employed throughout the speech. Early in his speech, King urges his audience to seize the moment; "Now is the time" is repeated three times in the sixth paragraph. The most widely cited example of anaphora is found in the often quoted phrase "I have a dream", which is repeated eight times as King paints a picture of an integrated and unified America for his audience. Other occa-

sions include "One hundred years later", "We can never be satisfied", "With this faith", "Let freedom ring", and "free at last".

King was the sixteenth out of eighteen people to speak that day, according to the official program.

"I still have a dream, a dream deeply rooted in the American dream – one day this nation will rise up and live up to its creed, "We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream..." -Martin Luther King Jr. (1963) Among the most quoted lines of the speech are "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!"

According to U.S. Representative John Lewis, who also spoke that day as the president of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, "Dr. King had the power, the ability, and the capacity to transform those steps on the Lincoln Memorial into a monumental area that will forever be recognized. By speaking the way he did, he educated, he inspired, he informed not just the people there, but people throughout America and unborn generations."

The ideas in the speech reflect King's social experiences of ethnocentric abuse, the mistreatment and exploitation of blacks. The speech draws upon appeals to America's myths as a nation founded to provide freedom and justice to all people, and then reinforces and transcends those secular mythologies by placing them within a spiritual context by arguing that racial justice is also in accord with God's will.

Thus, the rhetoric of the speech provides redemption to America for its racial sins. King describes the promises made by America as a "promissory note" on which America has defaulted. He says that "America has given the Negro people a bad check", but that "we've come to cash this check" by marching in Washington, D.C. Similarities and Allusions King's speech used words and ideas from his own speeches and other texts. For years, he had spoken about dreams, quoted from Samuel Francis Smith's popular patriotic hymn "America" ("My Country, 'Tis

of Thee"), and referred extensively to the Bible.

The idea of constitutional rights as an "unfulfilled promise" was suggested

by Clarence Jones.

The final passage from King's speech closely resembles Archibald Carey Jr.'s address to the 1952 Republican National Convention: both speeches end with a recitation of the first verse of "America", and the speeches share the name of one of several mountains from which both exhort "let freedom ring".

King also is said to have used portions of Prathia Hall's speech at the site of a burned-down African American church in Terrell County, Georgia, in September 1962, in which she used the repeated phrase "I have a dream".

The church burned down after it was used for voter registration meetings.

Legacy The March on Washington put pressure on the Kennedy administration to advance its civil rights legislation in Congress.

The diaries of Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., published posthumously in 2007, suggest that President Kennedy was concerned that if the march failed to attract large numbers of demonstrators, it might undermine his civil rights efforts.

In the wake of the speech and march, King was named Man of the Year by TIME magazine for 1963, and in 1964, he was the youngest person ever awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The full speech did not appear in writing until August 1983, some 15 years after King's death, when a transcript was published in The Washington Post. In 1990, the Australian alternative comedy rock band Doug Anthony All Stars released an album called Icon. One song from Icon, "Shang-a-lang", sampled the end of the speech.

In 1992, the band Moodswings, incorporated excerpts from Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech in their song "Spiritual High, Part III" on the album Moodfood. In 2002, the Library of Congress honored the speech by adding it to the United States National Recording Registry. In 2003, the National Park Service dedicated an inscribed marble pedestal to commemorate the location of King's speech at the Lincoln Memorial.

Reliving The Good Things

We might find that looking back at 2023 is really not that difficult, but are we dealing with all the good, great, exciting and wonderful times we had. They may not all be wonderful, but surely there are some outstanding experiences.

For this commentary, I decided to go way back. It begins like this: I was a student at Howard University and I always remember when students heard that a very famous person would be visiting our campus.

Of course, the month was January or maybe February, (I can’t remember). This individual, we soon learned would be Martin Luther King.

The excitement was amazing. He would actually be touring the campus and we even found out the time he would be touring.

The wonderful thing about this experience is that many in the Dayton community continue to acknowledge the pride

On Monday, January 15, 2024 our community will not forget, but will continue to look forward to this day and decide to participate in the many activities that will be available to not only honor Dr. King, listen to that famous speech, but hopefully there just may be a stronger decision for many of us to work toward leading our lives just as King wanted us to do.

On August 26, 2013, UK's BBC Radio 4 broadcast "God's Trombone", in which Gary Younge looked behind the scenes of the speech and explored "what made it both timely and timeless". On August 28, 2013, thousands gathered on the mall in Washington D.C. where King made his historic speech to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the occasion. In attendance were

former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, and incumbent President Barack Obama, who addressed the crowd and spoke on the significance of the event. Many of King's family were in attendance.

On October 11, 2015, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution published an exclusive report about Stone Mountain officials considering installation of a new "Freedom Bell" honoring King and citing the speech's reference to the mountain "Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia." Design details and a timeline for its installation remain to be determined. The article mentioned inspiration for the proposed monument came from a bell-ringing ceremony held in 2013 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of King's speech.

We don’t get to see him, but we’ve got hundreds of pictures, wonderful thoughts, and I imagine, we will ALWAYS want to hear that speech and live the life he dreamed about!! the U.S. $5 bill, which has featured the Lincoln Memorial on its back, would undergo a redesign prior to 2020.

Lew said that a portrait of Lincoln would remain on the front of the bill, but the back would be redesigned to depict various historical events that have occurred at the memorial, including an image from King's speech.

Ava DuVernay was commissioned by the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture to create a film which debuted at the museum's opening on September 24, 2016.

This film, August 28: A Day in the Life of a People (2016), tells of six significant events in African-American history that happened on the same date, August 28. Events depicted include (among others) the speech.

DML Gets a Head Start on Black History Month

Opera Singer María Reyna Returns to DML

Mixe Oaxacan soprano singer María Reyna (who headlined Dayton Metro Library’s National Hispanic Heritage Month programs in October with a performance at the Main Library) is returning to DML. María Reyna Soprano Mixe Concert will be held on Saturday, January 27, from 1-2 pm, in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum.

Reyna is an advocate for the preservation of Mexican languages. She combines operatic techniques with five Indigenous languages of Mexico, in turn promoting linguistic diversity through art, hence performing musical fusions in such genres as Jazz and Bolero. However, Reyna returned to the Dayton area to learn the English language by attending classes offered

at DML. Her goal is to communicate with DML patrons in English during her concert in January.

DML has many services available for New Americans and those wanting to learn English. For example, the English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are offered at several Branches. Gabriela Pickett, Ph.D., DML’s Newest American Specialist, states, “We tailor our ESL classes to fit a student’s needs by creating curriculum content on demand.”

Additional programs for New Americans: For patrons with children, several Bilingual Storytime programs are available – each session offering rhymes, songs, fingerplays, and stories that stimulate the learning process for young children. DML also offers

a Citizenship Civics Test Prep program that helps New Americans prepare for their naturalization interview.

“We place patrons at the center of everything we do and we try to ensure that Newest Americans feel free to belong, live, work, and play in our city and enjoy it as much as everyone else,” Pickett explains.

Dayton Metro Library’s Miamisburg Branch is hosting a new program, All-Abilities Adventure, to be held through February.

The program invites adult patrons to embark on an exciting journey where inclusivity, creativity, and community come together. Designed for adults of all abilities,

it offers a variety of activities, such as storytimes and craft, sensory, and coloring stations.

This exhibition explores the art of Aka Pereyma, who was born in Poland and lived most of her adult life in Troy, Ohio.

Pereyma graduated from the School of the Dayton Art Institute and made art which gained her an international reputation. Pereyma’s uncon-

ventional and visionary art demonstrates a highly personal means of expression. Weaving folk-art traditions and modern artistic styles, Pereyma produced work that conveyed strong ties to her Ukrainian heritage.

Featuring approximately 80 artworks by women artists, Riveting: Women Artists from the Sara W. and Michelle Vance-Waddell Collection showcases a variety of styles and media with an emphasis on support of feminist viewpoints and LGBTQ+ communities. Internationally recognized artists such as Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith and Ana Mendieta are featured alongside underrecognized and local artists in this thought-provoking exhibition, which speaks to prominent social issues of the day. This powerful exhibition will be on view June 22–September 8, 2024.

The 2024 Special Exhibition season will close with a combined presentation of two major traveling exhibitions, Merry Grinchmas: Art of Dr. Seuss’ Holiday Classic & (B) ART! This year, 2024, our speaker was the iconic Ruby Bridges, “a prominent civil rights advocate, author, and speaker who gained widespread recognition for her remarkable feat as a fearless six-year-old. She made history in 1960 by becoming the first African American child to integrate an all-white school in the South, playing a pivotal role in the subsequent desegregation of public education.”

Although she is quiet-spoken, I heard every word in an audience of 1,300.

She inspired and educated us about the importance of courage, resilience, and the pursuit of equality.

In my book, BETWEEN A ROCK AND HARD PLACES: Our Journey Before and Fifty Years Beyond the 1957 Merger of the United Church of Christ (in the chapter titled The History of Central Congregational Church), therein, I have her photo on the left showing angry protesters and a vicious mob as U.S. Marshals escorted her on Nov. 14, 1960, as she walked into the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana.

She mentioned that a “close” friend gunned down her oldest son and reminded us that it is not about the color of our skin. As my mentor says, “Everybody, your color is not kind.” She continues, “The real conflict is being between Good and evil. God and Satan.”

Ohio Natural Energy Foundation Welcomes Applications for 2024 Scholarship Program Each Scholarship is worth $1,000 per year

PATASKALA, OH - The Ohio Natural Energy Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2024 scholarship program. This program has awarded nearly 650 scholarships since 2007.

This $640,000 investment has assisted young Ohioans interested in pursuing careers in the natural gas and oil industry get an education.

Students can receive the $1,000 scholarship for

a total of four years upon renewal. Applications are being accepted through March 1.

Scholarships are awarded to Ohio students interested in careers such as petroleum engineer, finance, equipment operator, mechanical engineer, welder and many more.

The scholarships can be used to attend an accredited college, university, technical or trade school and requires the student to

Lebanon, OH: The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Coalition of Lebanon (MLK Lebanon) hosted the 39th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, January 15, 2024, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 1270 N Broadway in Lebanon.

This year’s theme was “Genuine Brotherhood: Perfect Peace.” Inspired

by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Nobel Peace Prize speech, he stated “I think Alfred Nobel would know what I mean when I say that I accept this award in the spirit of a curator of some precious heirloom which he holds in trust for its true owners, all those to whom beauty is truth and truth beauty, and in whose eyes the beauty of genuine brotherhood and peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold.”

The event was designed to educate the community about Dr. King’s philosophy and to inspire unity. The event featured Master of Ceremony, Emiko Moore with musical performances by the Lebanon High School Orchestra, Table 15, and Jay Mills and Friends.

The announcement of the Drum Major Awards was the highlight of the day.

MCPC Will Offer Support Groups for Survivors of Suicide

Losing a loved one to suicide is devastating.

Finding resources for emotional support can be challenging for grieving families.

“As part of our work with the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, we reach out to families following a death by suicide. It’s heartbreaking to hear their stories and to fully understand the grief they are experiencing,” said Montgomery County Coroner Kent Harshbarger. “We reached out to the MCPC to inquire about resources available to help these families process those feelings.”

That inquiry prompted conversations among the members of the Suicide Prevention Committee.

“Committee members came up with the impactful idea to create regular support groups that would help the families manage through the grief with others who are experiencing similar loss,” said Colleen Oakes, Manager of the MCPC. Ten committee members received extensive training on the best prac-

tices of facilitating grief support groups. Montgomery County Suicide Loss Survivor Support Groups will begin later this month with 10-week sessions. New groups will convene four times each year in various locations.

Caregiver Insights from the Journey of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Every year, across the globe, we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. His voice has made a profound impact on humanity. He reminded us that each of us can be great… because anybody can serve.

“You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love…and you can be that servant,” said Dr. King.

As caregivers, sacrifice has the stopping point when the journey of a loved one ends.

Dr. King addressed the narrative this way, “For when people get caught up with that which is right, and they are willing to sacrifice for it, there is no stopping point short of victory.”

The connection between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the role of a caregiver poses a united and unique perspective. While the role is associated with physical and mental tenacity, the overarching construct is service. Caregivers are change agents. Dr. King was a change agent. He changed the nation’s direction by encouraging us to face our fail-

ures and fears while serving.

Failure and fear are two words often felt by a caregiver when serving. The reality is that an array of obstacles are out of our control, and while the fear of failure can take over our emotional stance, we stand, as Dr. King stood, in the midst of the known and unknown. As Dr. King, caregivers also stand on the balcony, looking out and wondering what is next.

While the balcony is designed to support the weight of whoever sits or stands on it, there are times when it can fail and fall.

Caregiving is not about giving up when things get difficult or discouraging. We make differences generated by love and service.

One of Dr. King’s quotes, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

As a caregiver, there are moments when the role of caregiving tests the ability of human kindness, and our faith is what we lean on.

Dr. King reminds us, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

As Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate, many of the accomplishments in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life can be aligned with the journey of a caregiver.

Dr. King stated, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?”

Our response should be a call to action.

“Be a bush if you can’t be a tree. If you can’t be a highway, just be a trail.

If you can’t be a sun, be a star. For it isn’t by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.”
