We have collected your feedback— whether via survey, through a standing ovation, or in casual conversation at Starbucks. We have listened: there were performances you wanted to see; works that, perhaps, you weren’t crazy about; new ideas; and old favorites. Our one-of-a-kind artistic team has taken this feedback and crafted a thrilling lineup specifically for you.
In addition to all the performances you see on stage, DPAA serves over 65,000 students and adults through our learning programs: the Dayton Ballet School, Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, concerts for students downtown and performances in their schools, and so much more. Stay tuned this season as we announce some groundbreaking partnerships that will expand our Learning and Community Engagement work with students of all ages!
And finally, to add to the buzz, we celebrate Neal Gittleman in his 30th year at the helm of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. During Neal’s tenure, he’s led the orchestra to artistic heights and played an integral role in shepherding the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance into fruition. For his 30th and final season, we celebrate Neal through crowd-favorite artists, world premieres, and monumental classics. We hope that you will attend often this season!

Audio description is available upon request for patrons who have vision loss. The 2024–2025 season is my 30th on the DPO podium, following founder Paul Katz, Charles Wendelken-Wilson, and Isaiah Jackson. Next year Keitaro Harada takes over. Until then, I’ll be surrounded by fabulous musicians and fabulous music. Favorite pieces by favorite composers. A world premiere and a U.S. premiere. A ballet I’ve conducted more than a hundred times (The Nutcracker) and one I’ve never conducted before (Cinderella). One of my favorite operas (Amahl and the Night Visitors). And my first-ever concert of country music! But what keeps popping into my head again and again as I think about this last year as your conductor? Song titles by my favorite band, The Beatles: “The Long and Winding Road,” “Come Together,” “We Can Work It Out”. And again and again, these lines: “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.” Except for me, it’s “… equal to the music you make.” And of course, “P.S. I Love You!”
Kathleen Clawson,

Kathleen Clawson begins her fifth season as Dayton Opera Artistic Director and Dr. Ron Anderson and Robb Sloan-Anderson Chair. Clawson began directing for the Opera in 2009 and has directed 19 productions since, including serving as dramaturg and stage director for the world premiere of Finding Wright
An acclaimed opera director, she directed The Santa Fe Opera’s world premiere of Shoes for the Santo Niño (2011) and was stage director and dramaturg for their world premiere of UnShakeable (2016).
A mezzo-soprano, Clawson’s credits include soloist with the Dayton Philharmonic, productions with The Santa Fe Opera and Dallas Opera, recording de Falla’s “El Amor Brujo” for Maria Benitez’ Teatro Flamenco tour, and singing “Mother Abbess” in Debby Boone’s international tour of The Sound of Music.
Brandon Ragland

Brandon Ragland has more than a decade of professional experience as a dancer, choreographer, and educator. He trained in Birmingham, AL, and has a bachelor’s degree in Dance-Arts Administration from Butler University. After graduation, Ragland danced with Alabama Ballet, followed by Louisville Ballet in 2010, spending 13 years as a leading artist. A respected choreographer, Ragland choreographed works for Louisville Ballet, Alabama Ballet, Ballet Arkansas, AROVA Contemporary Ballet, Next Generation Ballet, Sedona Chamber Ballet, and The Perla Ballet. In 2017, Ragland was honored to perform with the Black Iris Project at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as part of the Kennedy Center’s Dance Across America Program. He has received numerous awards, including “Best Artist” in Louisville Magazine and The Lift a Life Foundation’s “Emerging Leader in the Arts Award” from The Fund for the Arts.
Keitaro Harada
Music and Artistic Director Designate, Philharmonic; Sponsored by Barbara O’Hara
Named Music and Artistic Director Designate for Dayton Philharmonic for the 2024–25 season, Keitaro Harada will begin a five-year tenure as Music and Artistic Director with the 2025–26 season. As Music and Artistic Director of the Savannah Philharmonic since the 2020–21 season, Harada has transformed the orchestra and energized its audiences throughout the community with his imaginative programs and charismatic presence.
Harada is a recipient of the 2023 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award. In 2024, he was named Permanent Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Partner for the Aichi Chamber Orchestra. Harada was Associate Conductor for four years at the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops, where he regularly assisted Music Director Louis Langrée and collaborated with James Conlon and Juanjo Mena at the orchestra’s annual May Festival.

About the Artist
Ian Jutsun Lead Vocalist
Ian Jutsun is one of Canada’s most respected voices. He is a singer/ songwriter, but he is also an actor and comedian. Jutsun began his singing career at the age of 13 in Montreal, where he fronted several bands. In 1992, he moved to Toronto and began songwriting, recording, and playing with many respected and talented musicians from Canada and the U.S. He is an accomplished and consummate artist with an extensive music career—live and in studio—and as an actor in theater, film, and television. After years of touring as a comic with four live original comedy CD releases under his belt, it’s no wonder his bandmates know him as much as a funny man as a singer.
Jutsun also has two original Rock/Pop album releases under his belt: Jutsun, and Jutsun Cake: Banana, available for streaming or purchase on iTunes or Google Play.
One of Jutsun’s original bands, Sahara, was featured on national broadcast TV show Made in Canada, and one of his original songs was included on a Canadian music compilation CD and sent with astronaut Marc Garneau into outer space! Jutsun was a member of the Galaxy All Star Orchestra Tribute To The Kings Of Swing & The Fabulous Crooners, and held a post as part-time Vocal/Performance Coach at Sheridan College’s Musical Theater Program.
Awards include the CHIN Radio singing contest (Winner); Canadian FACTOR
Songwriting (Winner); and Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards: “Best Male Vocalist” (Nominee).
Jutsun was a featured singer and principal actor in the Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bombay Dreams, working directly with Grammy and Oscar Award-winner, A.R. Rahman, who composed a feature song for Jutsun called “The Lament.” Bombay Dreams Musical Director Jim Abbott commented, “ … Ian’s performance of ‘The Lament’ created the most beautiful and soulful moment in the show! He strives for perfection each and every time he performs the piece.”
Currently, Jutsun continues to add to his 14+ years as a private vocal instructor and coach. In 2016, with his original Jazz/Pop ensemble, he released a new project called TNP: The Night Porters (available on iTunes and Google play) and is currently writing and recording a follow-up CD. He is a member of The Platters starring Norris Vines, and tours across North America as the lead singer in acclaimed group Brass Transit, performing the musical legacy of the band Chicago. He’s very pleased to find time in his tour schedule for Jeans ‘n Classics (JnC).
Rique Franks
Best known for her four duets with Dan Hill (“In Your Eyes,” “Hold Me Now,” “Sometimes When We Touch,” and “Can’t We Try”), Rique Franks has sung, toured, recorded and/or written with many Canadian and international recording artists, including Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), Alannah Myles, Alexander O’Neal, Martin Fry
Vocalist
(ABC), Alan Frew/Glass Tiger, Bruce Guthro, Glen Lewis, Eddie Schwartz (Writer for Pat Benatar), Lisa Dalbello, Ronnie Greenfield (The Ronettes), Lorraine Segato (Parachute Club), Alfie Zappacosta, Stephan Moccio, Marc Jordan … the list goes on and on.
This core artist and featured soloist with Jeans ‘n Classics is also a busy session singer and voice actor in Toronto. Franks has lent her voice to many original projects, and has sung and/or read thousands of memorable commercials for countless products.
Unlike most singers Franks started late, after being discovered in her midtwenties by Marvin Dolgay (Tambre Productions) and Doug Paulson (TV’s Thrill of a Lifetime). She joined the union (ACTRA), and sang her for her first jingle the very next day. That jingle (for Thrifty’s Jeans) won an award, and work suddenly snowballed. Franks still considers many of the people she first worked with in those early days (Lisa Dalbello, Neil Donell, David Blamires, Johnny Rutledge, and others) as major influences.
Franks recently ended a 20-year run as the on-air speaking voice of Showcase Television/Showcase Diva, saying, among other things, “Viewer discretion is advised” … a lot.

With his lightning speed comedic timing, skills on the dance floor, and a truly exceptional, velvety, emotional voice, Gavin Hope is a natural born performer and always a fan-favorite!
Hope is a three-time Juno Award nominee, both as a solo headlining vocalist and also as the longest running Baritone member of the iconic Canadian a cappella group, The Nylons. In addition to touring globally, he has recorded six studio albums with The Nylons, as well as two more successful recordings: Solo Pop album Anything Like Mine, which nationally charted on radio top 100 and top 40; and the beautifully minimalist Jazz album For All We Know featuring Bill King, which received rave reviews on Jazz charts and was named one of the top Canadian Jazz albums of the year by the Toronto Star. Hope has performed in music festivals around the world, including the Borneo Jazz Festival twice, as well as being a featured artist locally in the Toronto and Kensington Jazz Festivals.
Hope was an original Canadian cast member of hit Broadway musicals The Lion King (Simba), and RENT (Collins), in Toronto. More recently Gavin was in the Dora Award-winning (Best New Musical) Dixon Road, the Dora Award-nominated original, all-Black Canadian opera, Of The Sea, and bared it all as “Horse” in the hit musical, The Full Monty. Besides countless commercials and TV appearances, theatre, and Nylons tour dates, Hope has shared stages with the likes of Natalie Cole, Deborah Cox, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Corey Hart, Bryan Adams, David Foster, and many other notable artists.
Hope has been a headlining featured vocalist with Jeans ‘n Classics for almost two decades. With JnC, Hope has been performing Symphony Pops concerts in the U.S. and Canada, bringing the music of Earth, Wind, and Fire; Michael Jackson; Prince; Stevie Wonder; Rocky Horror; Motown; Woodstock; Soulful; Music of Apollo; Rock and Pop; James Bond; and more to the symphonic stage. Gavin Hope Vocalist
his music family, and to be a core artist in many of the incredible and dynamic shows they offer.
Hope wrapped up touring with The Nylons during a sold out Farewell Tour in Canada, U.S., Belgium, and Holland in 2017, and has continued being a successful performer as a headlining vocalist, actor, session vocalist, and recording artist all over North America. Hope’s passion for travel and gift for photography (follow him @rox_daddy on Instagram) are further proof that he is living the life he was born to live! From the studio, to touring, to the Theatre stage, Off-Broadway, and the Symphonic stage, Hope simply loves to perform, and audiences love him right back.
Tracey Gallant Vocalist
Tracey Gallant is a captivating and lively performer known for her infectious energy. Originally from the east coast of Canada, she is now based in Toronto where she works alongside some of the city’s finest musicians. She has headlined at local festivals such as Toronto Pride, Taste of the Danforth, and Beaches Jazz. She has also traveled and performed all throughout Canada, into the U.S., overseas (Oman, Morocco), and the Caribbean. Gallant is a versatile singer and covers an extensive and diverse range of musical styles, from crooner Jazz to edgy Rock. She also writes her own original music.
Gallant is always thrilled at every opportunity she gets to make music, and is very happy whenever she has the chance to join the talented musicians and singers of Jeans ‘n Classics and to help bring audiences a unique night of music to remember.
Dave Dunlop Guitar
Dave Dunlop has been a professional guitarist, songwriter, singer, and educator for
the past 30 years. Currently, Dunlop balances his studio work with his touring life as a member of the award-winning duo of Rik Emmett/Dave Dunlop, and Jeans ‘n Classics. Emmett and Dunlop won “Smooth Jazz Album of the Year” and “Duo/Group Of The Year” in 2007 on the strength of their debut album, Strung-Out Troubadours
Dunlop has been an integral member of the Jeans ‘n Classics band since 2005, winning rave reviews for his handiwork in many shows, including the music of Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton, among others.
Dunlop was lead guitarist and writer in the rock band The Full Nine, signed to Disney’s Mammoth Records in 2001. They had chart success with the single, “Not Over.” He’s also been a faculty member at the National Summer Guitar Workshop, and has had sideman stints with Bo Diddley, Mike Reno (Loverboy), Ron Sexsmith, and many others. In 2008 Dunlop joined the re-formed Hall Of Fame act Triumph, supporting the original line-up of Rik Emmett, Gil Moore, and Mike Levine.
In 2005 he established Room 9 Studio in his Toronto home, where he has been busy recording and producing projects non-stop ever since. His 2016 debut album, Monarch Girl spent 5 weeks at number one on the Maple Music charts. Of late he has up-and-comers Lyric Dubee, and The Launch finalist Trevor LaRose in his studio.

John Regan Keyboards
John Regan has been a member of Jeans ‘n Classics since the early 1990s. Classically trained but conditioned by rock, pop and folk music, Regan’s repertoire is vast. Prior to joining Jeans ‘n Classics, he worked with Second City in London, Ontario, and did solo work across southwestern Ontario. Regan cites Joe Jackson, Tom Waits, Elton John, and Roy Bittan as influences.
Since becoming a regular performer with Jeans ‘n Classics, Regan has shared the piano with such notables as Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), Lawrence Gowan (Styx), as well as his good friend Don Paulton (Lighthouse, Jeans ‘n Classics). He has performed with more than 50 orchestras across North America. In addition to the piano, Regan often plays host and emcee in JnC concerts, offering insight and whimsy to the musical selections.
A high school teacher and football coach by day, Regan lives in London with his wife and two small children.
Mitchell Tyler Bass
Conductor, arranger, songwriter, bassist and educator
Mitchell Tyler is an Honors Bachelor of Music (Theory & Composition) and Bachelor of Education graduate of Western University, and has been a member of Jeans ‘n Classics since 1992.
As a performer on upright and electric bass, he has shared the stage with many renowned artists including Rik Emmett
(Triumph), Alan Frew (Glass Tiger), Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), Lawrence Gowan (Styx), and David Blamires (Pat Metheney Group). He has played the touring productions of Chicago (2015), and Mamma Mia (2012).
Tyler’s orchestrations are widely performed by the Jeans ‘n Classics band as part of its North American symphonic concert schedule. His songwriting and music production activities date back to the early 1980s. Throughout the years, he has collaborated with a wide variety of artists on countless projects. Tyler has been a professional educator since 1993. He served as Orchestra London Canada’s Education Director from 2010 to 2013. He has extensive experience writing, developing, programming and conducting curriculum-linked educational content for symphony orchestras. He is an adjunct professor in the music performance department at the University of Western Ontario.
As a conductor, Tyler has had the privilege of working with a wide variety of orchestras across North America. Recent guest conductor appearances include the Fort Wayne Symphony, Springfield Symphony Orchestra, the Erie Philharmonic, the Colorado Symphony, the Jacksonville Symphony and the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. He continues to immensely enjoy his work with the Jeans ‘n Classics Rock Symphony (est. 2012).
In his spare time, Tyler enjoys playing tennis and touring the ballparks of Major League Baseball supporting his beloved Boston Red Sox.
Steve Heathcote Drums
Being voted “Drummer of the Year” at the 2009 Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards is just one of the many highlights in Heathcote’s 30-year career.
In addition to being in demand for his creative versatility in a studio environment, he is often called upon to work in theatre productions.
Credits include Jersey Boys, The Lion King, We Will Rock You, Dirty Dancing, Mamma Mia, Hairspray, and Billy Elliot.
Tours with Anne Murray, Colm Wilkinson, Joe Sealy, Phil Dwyer, Carol Welsman, and Holly Cole have taken him all over the world.
Heathcote has also performed with Petula Clark, Shirley Bassey, Bob Newhart, Frank Gorshin, Henry Cuesta, Guido Basso, and Oliver Jones.
