Asthe winter season unfolds, we’re reminded of how much the arts ground and uplift us. In times of uncertainty and change, music, dance, and storytelling performances offer us chances to reflect, to dream, to connect, and to feel deeply together.
At the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance, we believe the arts are not just entertainment; they’re a vital thread in the fabric of our community. They remind us of our shared humanity, spark joy in the everyday, and provide solace in moments of challenge.
Our upcoming winter performances celebrate the power of the arts to illuminate the human experience, with stories that resonate across time and melodies that linger long after the curtain falls. Whether you find
yourself moved by the grace of a ballet, the drama of an opera, or the soaring beauty of an orchestral piece, we hope you leave feeling enriched and renewed.
Now, more than ever, we need the arts— and DPAA needs you. Your presence, enthusiasm, and support fuel everything we do.
Thank you for being part of this journey. We look forward to sharing more magical moments with you this winter season.
With warmth and gratitude,
Patrick J. Nugent President and CEO
Joseph Zehenny DPAA Board Chair

Neal Gittleman
Artistic Director, Philharmonic
The 2024–2025 season is my 30th on the DPO podium, following founder Paul Katz, Charles Wendelken-Wilson, and Isaiah Jackson. Next year Keitaro Harada takes over. Until then, I’ll be surrounded by fabulous musicians and fabulous music. Favorite pieces by favorite composers. A world premiere and a U.S. premiere. A ballet I’ve conducted more than a hundred times (The Nutcracker) and one I’ve never conducted before (Cinderella). One of my favorite operas (Amahl and the Night Visitors). And my first-ever concert of country music! But what keeps popping into my head again and again as I think about this last year as your conductor? Song titles by my favorite band, The Beatles: “The Long and Winding Road,” “Come Together,” “We Can Work It Out.” And again and again, these lines: “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.” Except for me, it’s “… equal to the music you make.” And of course, “P.S. I Love You!”
Kathleen Clawson,
Artistic Director, Opera; Dr. Ron Anderson and Robb Sloan-Anderson Chair
Kathleen Clawson begins her fifth season as Dayton Opera Artistic Director and Dr. Ron Anderson and Robb Sloan-Anderson Chair. Clawson began directing for the Opera in 2009 and has directed 19 productions since, including serving as dramaturg and stage director for the world premiere of Finding Wright
An acclaimed opera director, she directed The Santa Fe Opera’s world premiere of Shoes for the Santo Niño (2011) and was stage director and dramaturg for their world premiere of UnShakeable (2016).
A mezzo-soprano, Clawson’s credits include soloist with the Dayton Philharmonic, productions with The Santa Fe Opera and Dallas Opera, recording de Falla’s “El Amor Brujo” for Maria Benitez’ Teatro Flamenco tour, and singing “Mother Abbess” in Debby Boone’s international tour of The Sound of Music.
Artistic Director, Ballet; Sponsored by Dr. Troy Tyner and Dr. Ingrid Brown
Brandon Ragland has more than a decade of professional experience as a dancer, choreographer, and educator. He trained in Birmingham, AL, and has a bachelor’s degree in Dance-Arts Administration from Butler University. After graduation, Ragland danced with Alabama Ballet, followed by Louisville Ballet in 2010, spending 13 years as a leading artist. A respected choreographer, Ragland choreographed works for Louisville Ballet, Alabama Ballet, Ballet Arkansas, AROVA Contemporary Ballet, Next Generation Ballet, Sedona Chamber Ballet, and The Perla Ballet. In 2017, Ragland was honored to perform with the Black Iris Project at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as part of the Kennedy Center’s Dance Across America Program. He has received numerous awards, including “Best Artist” in Louisville Magazine and The Lift a Life Foundation’s “Emerging Leader in the Arts Award” from The Fund for the Arts.
Music and Artistic Director Designate, Philharmonic; Sponsored by Barbara O’Hara
Named Music and Artistic Director Designate for Dayton Philharmonic for the 2024–25 season, Keitaro Harada will begin a five-year tenure as Music and Artistic Director with the 2025–26 season. As Music and Artistic Director of the Savannah Philharmonic since the 2020–21 season, Harada has transformed the orchestra and energized its audiences throughout the community with his imaginative programs and charismatic presence.
Harada is a recipient of the 2023 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award. In 2024, he was named Permanent Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Partner for the Aichi Chamber Orchestra. Harada was Associate Conductor for four years at the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops, where he regularly assisted Music Director Louis Langrée and collaborated with James Conlon and Juanjo Mena at the orchestra’s annual May Festival.

Scenery constructed for Dayton Performing Arts Alliance by Opera Southwest.
(Early 1900s) It’s Christmas Eve in Downtown Dayton, and Clara Stahlbaum, her brother Fritz, and their father visit Drosselmeyer’s toy store for holiday shopping. Clara is captivated by a Nutcracker figurine but decides on a beautiful new doll instead. Empathetic
to her desire for both, her father secretly asks Drosselmeyer to bring the Nutcracker and other toys to their Christmas party that evening.
Later, at the Stahlbaum family home, preparations are underway for the Christmas celebration. As guests arrive, the children excitedly admire the gifts under the tree. Drosselmeyer arrives and enchants the partygoers with magic before introducing two life-sized
dolls that dance to everyone’s delight. Among his gifts, he presents Clara with the Nutcracker. Fritz, overcome with jealousy, breaks the doll, but Drosselmeyer repairs it, much to Clara’s relief.
After the party, the family goes to bed. Unable to resist checking on her Nutcracker, Clara sneaks back to the living room. As the clock strikes midnight, strange things begin to happen. Mice scurry about, and under Drosselmeyer’s magical influence, the Christmas tree, fireplace, presents, and the Nutcracker grow to enormous sizes. Clara finds herself face-to-face with an army of rats led by the fearsome Rat King. The Nutcracker, now life-sized, leads an army of toy soldiers into battle. The fight reaches a critical point, but Clara’s courage helps the Nutcracker defeat the Rat King.
As a reward, Drosselmeyer transforms the Nutcracker into a prince, and Clara magically becomes older. Together, they
journey to an enchanted snow forest, where snowflakes dance around them. The beautiful Snow King and Queen greeted them warmly.
Their adventure continues into the Land of Time, a magical realm in which the pair explore history through dance. Clara and the Nutcracker Prince are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy, her Cavalier, angels, and clouds. After recounting their victory over the Rat King, Clara and the Prince are honored with a spectacular celebration. Court Jesters, Pirates, Porcelain Dolls, Mother Time, Dew Drop, and others perform dazzling dances, representing various moments in history.
As the celebration concludes, Drosselmeyer escorts Clara home. She wakes up on Christmas morning, once again her young self, unsure if her magical adventure was a dream or a gift of Drosselmeyer’s Christmas magic.
It is with great joy that I welcome you to the world premiere of Dayton Ballet’s fresh take on The Nutcracker! This cherished holiday tradition has brought joy to so many over the years, and I couldn’t be more excited to share this refreshed version with you that honors the classic tale but also introduces exciting new elements and creative interpretations.
This production breathes new life into the beloved story of Clara and her enchanting journey. Thanks to the incredible talents of costume designer Lyn Baudendistel and scenic designer Ray Zupp, we’ve reimagined the visual world of Clara’s journey to create an experience that’s vibrant, immersive, and truly unforgettable. And of course, all of this comes to life against Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, performed live by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.
Our production features over 125 local children from Dayton Ballet School and other area ballet schools; this performance is as much a celebration of local talent as it is a holiday tradition. Their energy and charm add a heartwarming touch, reminding us all of the incredible talent and spirit within our community.
As we unveil this fresh take on The Nutcracker, we invite you to join us on the journey from Clara’s home to the Land of Time. I hope you’ll find yourself captivated by the same wonder and joy that inspired us in creating this production. Whether this is your first Nutcracker or your fiftieth, I believe there’s something here to surprise and delight everyone.
Thank you for your continued support of the arts in Dayton. I look forward to sharing this unforgettable experience with you.

Baudendistel Costume Designer
Lyn Petry Baudendistel has over 40 years of experience designing and constructing clothing and costumes and is currently celebrating her 10th season as the Costume Director and Resident Designer for the Dayton Ballet and Dayton Opera, both part of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA). Baudendistel oversees every detail of costume creation Her reputation for innovation and meticulous craftsmanship ensures that each costume piece effectively reflects the artistic vision of each performance. In 2023, she was selected to design Dayton’s new production of The Nutcracker. In designing the 2024 Nutcracker, she sourced fabrics from Istanbul, Turkey, Chicago, and New York City.
Baudendistel’s Dayton Ballet portfolio showcases her versatility, including the design and construction of full-length story ballets such as The Great Gatsby and Sleepy Hollow (choreographed by Karen Russo-Burke), along with repertoire pieces for multiple choreographers such as Beethoven’s 9th, Don Quixote, Dia De Los Muertos, and Farandole, In Pieces, Isle of the Dead, I’ll Meet You There, Masquerade, No Strings
Attached, Prelude and Allegro, Still Water is No Drink, and Zero Impact. Her costume design and build extend into opera with Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Elixir of Love, and The Pearl Fishers (dancer costumes).
While Baudendistel has been a lifelong designer and stitcher, her early career and academic training started in the medical arts.
