Accessibility
DPAA is committed to providing easy access to the arts. If you have any specific needs or questions, please contact the box office.
Audio description is available upon request for patrons who have vision loss. Describers provide a live, objective, descriptive delivery of the visual elements of a performance in between the dialogue and/or music via a small receiver. Requests must be received two weeks prior to an event and are subject to the availability of the Describer. Arrange by calling the box office.
Assistive listening devices are available for all performances. Borrow a device from the kiosk in the lobby or from a house manager.
Sign language interpretation is also available upon request for performances at the Schuster Center and Victoria Theatre. Requests for sign language interpretation must be received two weeks prior to the event and are subject to the availability of the Interpreter. Please call the box office to make arrangements.

Our events are recommended for age 6 and up.
Military Appreciation and Discount Programs
In addition to our standard military discount, DPAA offers a Military Appreciation Program for active-duty military members, retired veterans with ID cards, and WPAFB government civilian employees in the region. Kathleen Clawson,

Kathleen Clawson is a distinguished director, performer, and educator whose career has been defined by her deep commitment to opera. Clawson’s extensive directing work includes over 20 productions for the Dayton Opera and a long-standing association with The Santa Fe Opera, where her credits include staging two world premieres, and staging the Apprentice Scenes for over two decades.
Clawson first came to Dayton as a soloist with the Dayton Philharmonic. Now a retired mezzo-soprano, she performed with opera companies and orchestras throughout the country, and performed in musical theatre, including the “Mother Abbess” in an international tour of The Sound of Music.
A passionate advocate for arts education, she served as the Associate Director of The Santa Fe Opera’s Apprentice Singer Program for ten years and mentors the Dayton Opera Artists in Residence.
Keitaro Harada
Music and Artistic Director, Philharmonic; Sponsored by Barbara N. O’Hara
Armed with intensity and depth, Keitaro Harada consistently provides riveting concerts and opera performances in Asia, the Americas, and Europe. As Music and Artistic Director of the Savannah Philharmonic since 2020, Harada has transformed the orchestra and energized its audiences throughout the community with his imaginative programs and charismatic presence.
In 2024, Harada was named Permanent Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Partner for the Aichi Chamber Orchestra, and he begins a five-year tenure as Music and Artistic Director of the Dayton Philharmonic in the 2025–26 season. He has forged a close connection with the NHK Symphony Orchestra with whom he appears frequently and has recorded three albums. Harada is a recipient of the 2023 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award.
Brandon Ragland

Brandon Ragland has more than a decade of professional experience as a dancer, choreographer, and educator. He trained in Birmingham, AL, and has a bachelor’s degree in Dance-Arts Administration from Butler University. After graduation, Ragland danced with Alabama Ballet, followed by Louisville Ballet in 2010, spending 13 years as a leading artist. A respected choreographer, Ragland choreographed works for Louisville Ballet, Alabama Ballet, Ballet Arkansas, AROVA Contemporary Ballet, Next Generation Ballet, Sedona Chamber Ballet, and The Perla Ballet. In 2017, Ragland was honored to perform with the Black Iris Project at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as part of the Kennedy Center’s Dance Across America Program. He has received numerous awards, including “Best Artist” in Louisville Magazine and The Lift a Life Foundation’s “Emerging Leader in the Arts Award” from The Fund for the Arts.

Synopsis
Act I
The ballet opens on a sunny autumnal morning in Germany. The grape harvest is in progress. Duke Albrecht, a young nobleman, has fallen in love with a shy,

beautiful peasant girl named Giselle— despite being engaged to Bathilde, the Duke of Courland's daughter. He disguises himself as a humble villager called “Loys” to court the enchanting and innocent Giselle, who knows nothing of his true identity. With the help of his squire Wilfred, he hides his
fine attire and sword before heading to Giselle's house to romance her as the harvest festivities begin.
Hilarion, a local gamekeeper, is also in love with Giselle and is highly suspicious of the newcomer who has won her affections. He tries to convince her that Loys cannot be trusted, but she ignores his warnings.
Her mother, Berthe, is very protective of her, as she has a weak heart that leaves her in delicate health. She discourages the relationship between Giselle and Loys, thinking Hilarion would be a better match, and disapproves of her fondness for dancing, due to the strain on her heart.
The Duke and Wilfred arrive to the village following the rigors of the hunt with Bathilde among them. Albrecht hurries away, knowing he would be recognized and greeted by her, exposing him as a nobleman. The villagers welcome the party, offer them drinks, and perform several dances. Bathilde is charmed with Giselle's sweet and demure nature, not knowing of her relationship with Albrecht. Giselle is honored when Bathilde offers her a necklace as a gift before the group of nobles depart.
The villagers continue the harvest festivities, and Albrecht emerges again to dance with Giselle, who is named the Harvest Queen. Hilarion interrupts the festivities. He has discovered Albrecht's finely made sword and presents it as proof that he is really a nobleman who is engaged to another woman. Using Albrecht's hunting horn, Hilarion calls back the party of noblemen. Albrecht has no time to hide and has no choice but to greet Bathilde as his fiancée. All are shocked by the revelation, especially Giselle, who becomes inconsolable when faced with his deception. Knowing that they can never be together, she flies
into a mad fit of grief in which all the tender moments she shared with Loys flash before her eyes. She begins to dance wildly and erratically, ultimately causing her weak heart to give out. She collapses and dies in Albrecht's arms. Hilarion and Albrecht turn on each other in rage before Albrecht flees the scene in misery, leaving Berthe as she weeps over Giselle's body.
Act II
Late at night, Hilarion mourns at Giselle's forest grave, but is frightened away by the arrival of the Wilis, the ghostly spirits of maidens betrayed by their lovers. Myrtha and the Wilis rouse Giselle's spirit from her grave and induct her into their clan before disappearing into the forest. Albrecht arrives to lay flowers on Giselle's grave, and he weeps with guilt over her death. Her spirit appears and he begs her forgiveness, and she gently forgives him. She disappears to join the rest of the Wilis and Albrecht desperately follows her. Meanwhile, the Wilis have cornered a terrified Hilarion. They use their magic to force him to dance until he is nearly dead, and then throw him off a cliff to his death. Then they spy Albrecht, and turn on him, sentencing him to death as well. He pleads to Myrtha for his life, but she coldly refuses. Giselle's pleas are also dismissed, and he is forced to dance until sunrise. However, the power of Giselle's love counters the Wilis' magic and spares his life. The other spirits return to their graves at daybreak. Giselle has broken through the chains of hatred and vengeance that control the Wilis and is released from their powers. After bidding a tender farewell to Albrecht, she returns to her grave to rest in peace.

Welcome to the kickoff of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance’s Ballet Series.
It’s a true honor to begin a third season as Artistic Director of your Dayton Ballet and to welcome everyone with a production as meaningful as Giselle. Bringing Giselle to Dayton is deeply personal. It’s a ballet that challenges each artist on stage, asking them to connect with emotions of love, betrayal, madness, and ultimately, forgiveness—in ways that stretch dancers both technically and artistically.
Adding Giselle to Dayton Ballet’s repertoire is a significant milestone, not just for the artists, but for the Dayton community. This ballet bridges generations as one of the great classics of our art form, yet its themes are as relevant today as ever. Dayton audiences can look forward to a performance that combines ethereal romanticism and supernatural beauty, all while offering a powerful story that resonates on a heartfelt level.
Whether coming for the iconic music, the sweeping storytelling, or the virtuosic dancing, everyone is in for a transformative experience that will linger long after the curtain falls.
About the Artist
Rachel Lauren Lighting Designer
Rachel Lauren is a freelance lighting designer dually based out of Detroit and New York City.
Giselle is Lauren's first design with Dayton Ballet, and she is pleased to join the company for this endeavor. Lauren's other work can be seen at various companies around the country, most notably at Grand Rapids Ballet, Ohio Light Opera, Playhouse on the Square, Kansas City Ballet, The Encore, and Western Plains Opera. She is an interdisciplinary artist, continuing to design opera, dance, and musical theatre throughout her career.
