FROM THE LEADERSHIP

Dear Friends

This season is a moment of celebration! For the first time, Maestro Keitaro Harada takes the podium as Music and Artistic Director of your Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, leading us into an exciting new era of music-making. His artistry and vision join the brilliance of our opera and ballet companies to create a season that is as vibrant and inspiring as the community we share it with.

From the drama of opera to the grace of ballet and the power of the Philharmonic, our stage will shine with performances that honor tradition while embracing fresh possibilities. Each program is crafted to move, to thrill, and to remind us of the joy that only live performance can bring.

Most of all, this season is a celebration of you—our audience. Your presence and passion transform every note, every gesture, and every story into something unforgettable. We are thrilled to share this milestone year with you, and we invite you to join us as we begin a new chapter, together.

With excitement,

President and CEO Patrick Nugent with Artistic Directors Brandon Ragland, Kathleen Clawson, and Keitaro Harada

About the Artist

Since his triumph as winner of the 1970 Chopin International Piano Competition, pianist Garrick Ohlsson has established himself worldwide as a musician of magisterial interpretive and technical prowess. Although long regarded as one of the world’s leading exponents of the music of Frederic Chopin, Ohlsson commands an enormous repertoire which ranges over the entire piano literature encompassing more than 80 concerti.

For the first time in its history, the Chopin Competition has invited an American to chair the jury, and Ohlsson assumes that role for the 19th incarnation in October 2025. He will then return as guest soloist to the Cleveland Orchestra and National Symphony (DC), followed in the winter by a duo tour with violist Richard O'Neill which takes them from Los Angeles to Charlottesville (VA), St. Paul (MN), and New York's 92NY. In solo recital,

he can be heard in Vienna, London, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

Collaborations with the Cleveland, Emerson, Tokyo, and Takács string quartets have led to decades of touring and recordings. His solo recordings are available on British label Hyperion and in the US on Bridge Records. Both Brahms concerti and Tchaikovsky’s Second Piano Concerto have been released on live recordings with the Melbourne and Symphony symphonies on their own labels and Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 3 with the Atlanta Symphony and Robert Spano.

A native of White Plains, NY, Garrick Ohlsson began piano studies at the age of 8 at the Westchester Conservatory of Music, and at 13, he entered the Juilliard School. He was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1994 and the University Musical Society Distinguished Artist Award in Ann Arbor, MI in 1998. He is the 2014 recipient of the Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance from the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music, and in August 2018, the Polish Deputy Culture Minister awarded him with the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for cultural merit. Ohlsson is a Steinway Artist and makes his home in San Francisco.

About the Concert …

From those who know it best!

Symphony No. 4, Op. 29, “The Inextinguishable”

Carl Nielsen (1865–1931)

From Carl Nielsen, Composer

“Music is life, and, like life, inextinguishable.”

From Jonathan Lee, Principal Cello

“With a name like ‘The Inextinguishable,’ Nielsen sets the expectation that this piece will be EPIC. True to the spirit of its name, the Symphony comes out of the gate swinging and doesn’t really feel like a beginning. The first time I heard it, I thought, ‘Did I skip over the opening section?’ It feels like the needle was dropped and all of a sudden, we’re in the middle of something that began before I was there and will continue long after I’m gone. As I get to know more about this piece, that sentiment feels intentional.

“A work like this, dedicated to the resilience of life and the human spirit, demands a fight. It’s not fair to say that some pieces we perform don’t require total commitment from every musician, but this one requires every musician on stage to be ‘on.’ This piece is like riding the knife’s edge: it’s a desperate cry for life and it demands full commitment.

“This piece is four movements but reads as a continuous flow. The tone is lush and full and has movements of virtuosity and spaciousness that seem to pull from the vast possibility of human emotion and experience. I think it’s a great piece to sit down and allow yourself to be taken up in the musical river and see where it takes you. It is, after all, a work about you.”

Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18

Sergei

(1873–1943)

From Garrick Ohlsson, Piano

"My feeling is that if Mozart were alive [in 1900], this is the concerto he might write. It starts at the beginning and it has a flawless line straight to the last note. There's no point in which you can look at it musically and think, ‘Oh, the composer might have done differently or isn't quite so inspired here.’ It never touches the ground until the end. It's magic to me that way. The level of inspiration is high."

From Rachael Young, Principal Bassoon

"This concerto is one of the all-time great blockbusters—one of the most famous and beloved pieces ever written. You’ve almost certainly heard themes or moments from it before, but nothing beats the thrill of a live performance. It’s also about as lush, passionate, and heart-on-your-sleeve romantic as music gets, and I think we all want to get lost in that kind of fantasy from time to time when we go to the concert hall. Plus, getting to hear a living legend like Garrick Ohlsson tackle its virtuosity and beauty should be a bucket list kind of experience for everyone in the hall, including those of us on stage."

Rachmaninoff wrote this concerto after the failed premiere of his First Symphony; its success lifted him from depression, doubt, and insecurity.

From Jonathan Lee, Principal Cello

"I encounter these feelings almost every day. Many artists do. For anyone pursuing mastery in any craft, there are very high—even impossibly high—standards that we impose upon ourselves. I spend a lot of time working to refine my playing and growing in my musicianship, and that comes with a deep awareness of the numerous ways that I fall short of where I want to be or opportunities for growth. It's often very challenging at best, crippling at the worst.

"At the end of the day, to me, music-making is about communication, creation, sharing, and generosity. These things are very opposed to asking ‘Am I good enough?’ When I focus on connecting with the audience, asking what I have to offer, and then choosing to generously give through the music, I think the Impostor Syndrome lessens. When I reflect on what I have, I feel blessed."
