2024 TORTUGAS COACHING STAFF

JULIO MORILLOWILLIE BLAIR -

Manager Julio Morillo returns for his second season at the helm of the Tortugas and eighth year in the Cincinnati Reds organization. The 31-year-old native of Venezuela guided Daytona to a 56-72 record in his first year on The Beach in 2023. He previous led the ACL Reds to an Arizona Complex League division title in 2022. Morillo is 88-91 (.492) overall in two professional seasons as a manager. As a player, Morillo played in the Reds organization from 2010-15, including a stint in Daytona during the Tortugas’ inaugural campaign in 2015.

Pitching coach Willie Blair returns for his second season on The Beach. A 58-year-old native of Ashland, Kentucky, Blair comes back after leading a pitching staff that allowed the fewest hits in the Florida State League and struck out the third-most batters. 2024 will mark Blair’s second season in the Reds organization. He has coached professionally since 2010 in independent baseball as well as the San Diego Padres and Detroit Tigers organization. During his playing career, Blair pitched 12 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1990-01 for eight teams, winning 60 games and striking out 759 batters.

PITCHING COACH BENCH COACH

Hitting coach Nate Irving joins the Tortugas for his first season in Daytona and his sixth season in the Reds organization. A 31-year-old native of Yonkers, New York, Irving served as the hitting coach for the ACL Reds in 2023, where he oversaw an offense that scored the second-most runs in the 17-team Arizona Complex League. He previously held the bench coach role for Double-A Chattanooga in 2022 after serving as the Cincinnati Reds bullpen catcher from 2019-21. An alum of the University of Virginia, Irving played in Arizona Diamondbacks system as a catcher in 2014-15 before spending 2016-18 in independent baseball.

Coach Lenny Harris is back for his fourth season on the Tortugas staff and his eighth season coaching in the Cincinnati Reds system. The 58-year-old native of Miami, Florida has coached at the MLB level for the Washington Nationals and Miami Marlins, in addition to working in the Los Angeles Dodgers system before joining the Reds in 2016. As a player, Harris was originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 1983 MLB Draft and played all over the diamond for eight MLB teams over 18 seasons from 1988-05, setting the all-time MLB record with 212 career pinch-hits along the way and earning a World Series ring for the 2003 Florida Marlins.

HITTING COACH COACH

Coach Osmin Melendez arrives for his first season in Daytona and second season in the Cincinnati Reds organization. A 48-year-old native of Venezuela, Melendez joined the Reds in 2023 as a coach for the Class A-Advanced Dayton Dragons. Previously, Melendez worked in the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs systems, including seven seasons as a manager in the Venezuelan Summer League with the VSL Pirates (2006-11) and VSL Cubs (2013), posting a 308-174 (.639) record, reaching the league finals five times and winning the VSL title in 2008. Melendez played two professional seasons as an infielder in the Baltimore Orioles system in 1993-94.

Tortugas, Alums Seize Chance to “Break Out”

Current, Former Daytona Tortugas shine in inaugural Spring Breakout

They may not be the bright lights, but the equally bright afternoon sun over Arizona shined a light on the two dozen Cincinnati Reds prospects who had the opportunity to take part in Major League Baseball’s first-ever Spring Breakout.

The new series was billed as a showcase of top prospects from each MLB organization, allowing them to face off against another organization’s top minor league talent in a major-league spring training environment. Of the Reds’ Top 30 prospects by MLB Pipeline, 13 of them were in uniform for Spring Breakout.

As luck had it, the Reds were one of just a handful of MLB teams selected to play twice instead of only once, lending more opportunities Not only that, the Reds would be a part of one of the first Breakout games on March 14, when they traveled to Surprise, Arizona to take on the Texas Rangers.

After Texas scored a first-inning run off 2022 Tortuga Julian Aguiar, a pair of 2023 Tortugas took the stage in the top of the second Outfielder Ethan O’Donnell was hit by a pitch, and infielder Cam Collier followed with a two-run home run to left-center, connecting for the first home run in Spring Breakout history.

“That felt great,” Collier told MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon. “I set out to be aggressive, and the guy threw my pitch and I just went after it. I was sitting heater; he gave me the heater It just exploded ”

The 2023 Tortugas contributed even more as infielder Sal Stewart doubled in the third (after 2021-22 Tortuga Michael Trautwein was hit by a pitch), then both came home on a two-run double by infielder Carlos Sanchez.

With a 4-1 lead in place, the pitching staff did the rest. Aguiar earned the win with 3.0 innings of one-run ball, while 2022 Tortuga Hunter Parks threw 2 0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to earn the save, bracketing 2 0 electric, scoreless innings from 2023 first-round pick Rhett Lowder. The first Spring Breakout game in history was a 4-1 Reds win.

Two days later, the Reds took the field again on their home turf in Goodyear, Arizona, this time taking on prospects from the rival Cleveland Guardians

This time, around, this one did not belong to the Reds. Catcher Cade Hunter, another 2023 Tortuga, gave the Reds a 2-1 lead with an RBI double in the second inning, but it was all Cleveland the rest of the way as the Guardians took control with a three-run third and cruised to a 6-2 win.

Former Tortugas Andrew Moore, Cody Adcock, and Simon Miller did all turn in scoreless outings while 2023 hurlers Ryan Cardona and Arij Fransen also saw action in the game vs. Cleveland.

At the end of the day, 24 Reds prospects saw action in the Spring Breakout, 19 of whom have passed through Daytona at some point in their professional baseball journey

The players seemed to enjoy the opportunity, with Aguiar relishing the opportunity of drawing the starting assignment in the first game. “It was an honor to be named the starter of this game; it was exciting," Aguiar told MLB.com. Collier was honored as well.

“It’s a blessing because I worked very hard to get here I saw it in the offseason, and I just made it my plan to make it to this game ”
