A

s each calendar year draws to a close, we often look back

and reflect on all that has happened in our lives while contemplating what the future will bring. For most of us, 2020 has been the most difficult year in our lives facing the global pandemic and pressing national social issues, but we, as Daytona State College, are determined to meet these challenges together while still learning, evolving and growing.

Looking ahead, we are excited about new opportunities that continue to support and embrace diversity and inclusion. Minority recruitment and retention efforts have been a priority and focus of this College for many years. The Men of Character Initiative (MOCI) began a decade ago and has had a profound and positive impact on our students as evidenced by student testimonials and retention data.

When I joined the College in 2001, the Cultural Diversity Committee was already well-established and serving the needs of our students and community. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are woven throughout the College and today, the Cultural Diversity Committee is more active than ever, keeping DSC a diverse, welcoming community, promoting new ideas, and facilitating change.

I’m also pleased to announce a very special event scheduled for February 18, 2021 – the rededication of the Greene Center, named in recognition of J. Griffen Greene, the first and only president of Volusia County Community College. VCCC was created as the Black community college at the same time as Daytona Beach Junior College got its start in 1957, and the two institutions merged in 1965. Daytona State College is a lasting tribute to both institutions as their history is our history. More detailed information about the rededication will be shared with you in the new year.

We are a community-based institution, and it has been the community’s support that has helped us grow into the nationally recognized and award-winning institution we are today. Our mission of education remains constant, and like each of you, Daytona State will grow and adapt as we face whatever the future has in store for us.

AdventHealth $20,000 supports Foundation’s “Campaign 2020: Paving the Way Forward” Without its annual Gala, which was cancelled due to the pandemic, the Daytona State College Foundation’s Board of Directors launched Campaign 2020: Paving the Way Forward in early October with a goal to replace nearly $145,000 raised at the 2019 Gala.

First to make their commitment as ‘Presenting Sponsor’ was AdventHealth with their donation of $20,000. As of November 30, more than $140,000 had been secured toward the goal. A full report on this micro-campaign will be announced in early 2021.

The writer of Proverbs, the common text found in both the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament, says, “Unrelenting disappointment leaves you heartsick, but a sudden good break can turn life around.” (13:12 MSG) As a Board, we are privy to information about the life of Daytona State College and the educational pursuits of students, the achievement of faculty and staff, and the manner in which the College is leading the way in our region and state to build a highly trained workforce that is the engine of economic growth.

We are entrusted with the responsibility to oversee the investment of financial assets provided by generous donors and to deploy these resources in a manner consistent with our mission, which is to provide financial assistance to students and funding for critical needs that are beyond the scope of the College’s budget.

Annual Faculty Awards Announced A highlight of Fall Planning is the announcement of the Daytona State College Faculty Awards, which recognize a wide range of faculty accomplishments in the previous academic year.

The Moving the Needle Award is a department-wide honor given to the academic department which has done the most to increase the College’s performance measurables across several categories including retention, job placement or wages. This year’s winner is the School of Nursing, which covers five distinct programs. Among its noteworthy achievements were a highly successful BSN accreditation process, expanded offerings on two regional campuses, including the design of new space, and the ability to graduate its spring classes by resuming instruction and clinicals during the pandemic.

The Faculty Innovation Award is given to a faculty member who has “gone above and beyond” to make their classes more engaging, exciting and meaningful. Winning that award this year is Gabi Booth, Assistant Chair of the School of Mathematics. Booth developed videos and engagement components in online classes, was one of the first DSC instructors to use Learning Glass teaching tool, and in her role as an eMentor, provided assistance to other faculty during the transition to online instruction last spring.

The Award for Excellence in Online Instruction recognizes an outstanding DSC online instructor who utilizes well-designed and creative course materials and instructional methods, and provides a model of instructional online excellence for other faculty.

This year’s winner is Margie Hensler, Associate Professor in the School of Education. Hensler has been credited with creating low-cost solutions for students, designing a course with weekly substantive interaction, and updating documentation to ensure accessibility resources for all learners, all while serving

as an example of how a faculty member can engage, challenge, support and care for DSC students.

The Sterling Award is given to three College employees each year for teaching, professional and career excellence. Among this year’s recipients is Dan Biferie, Chair of the School of Photography, who retired last spring after spending 45 years as a faculty member and laying the groundwork for the Southeast Museum of Photography.

Will Dunne earned the Sterling Award for Professional Excellence after serving as DSC’s Athletic Director since 1992 and Dean of the School of Health and Wellness since 2006.

His work has helped build the Falcons into a nationally recognized NJCAA program both in athletics and academics.

Tara DeBloom is another winner for Professional Excellence in her role as Administrative Assistant in the Office of the Provost. She previously worked in Business Services and Facilities Services before joining Academic Affairs in 2014 where she is well-known for her detailed knowledge of Daytona State from every angle.

In addition to the accolades given by the College, six other faculty members earned the NISOD Excellence Award (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development). Representing Daytona State in 2020 are Alycia Ehlert, Associate Vice

President, College of Arts and Sciences; Deborah Kirkland, Assistant Chair, School of Building and Architectural Technology; Casey Knecht, Assistant Chair, Mary Karl College of Workforce and Continuing Education; Linda Miles, Senior Professor, School of Nursing; Karla Moore, Dean, Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment; Dustin Weeks, Assistant Chair, Library Services.

For the 10th consecutive year, the Daytona State College District Board of Trustees voted to hold the cost on tuition.

“Providing our students and community with affordable education has always been one of the pillars of Daytona State College,” said Dr. Tom LoBasso, DSC President. “We have been able to freeze the cost of tuition for a decade now, and even lowered it by two percent in 2015, because everyone should have access to life-changing educational opportunities. That’s important now more than ever.”

Daytona State’s tuition remains well below the national average and the U.S. Department of Education ranks DSC among the most affordable public four-year institutions in the country. A Florida resident can expect to pay approximately half the cost for an associate level or a bachelor’s degree at DSC compared to the cost at a Florida public university.

NEH Grant for Southeast Museum of Photography For the second time in less than a year, Daytona State College has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) which provides additional funding for the Southeast Museum of Photography (SMP).

The SMP is using the $55,351 grant to expand the virtual museum experience by cataloging and digitizing its collections and making them available through a searchable database. The grant will also allow the museum to create online content for a robust and interactive experience.

“We are so grateful and excited for the opportunity to expand digital access to our exhibitions and collections,” said Erin Gordon, Museum Director. “Funding from this grant will help grow the museum’s online audience and increase public awareness of the SMP’s extensive photography collection.

We are thrilled to be able to engage with the community in new and innovative ways, utilizing highly developed technology and specialized resources.”

Efforts to digitize the SMP’s collection began in 2017, resulting in more than 4,100 cataloged objects. Nearly 700 object records remain to be cataloged and more than 1,200 objects still need to be digitized so high-resolution images can be added to the records. The NEH received more than 2,300 eligible applications from cultural organizations requesting funding for projects between June and December 2020, and only 317 were granted. Daytona State was one of just six organizations in Florida to make the list.

The Southeast Museum of Photography currently owns approximately 5,000 total objects, which includes 4,700 photographs dating back to the late 1800s. The museum includes two galleries, a theater, library, gift shop, office space, preparation and work areas, and a collections vault.

TRiO SSS Awarded Grant Daytona State’s TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) was awarded a federal grant through the U.S. Department of Education totaling more than $1.8 million over five years.

“Against the backdrop of the pandemic, which disproportionately impacts our students and exacerbates systemic inequities, we are grateful to continue serving student scholars and providing them the tools, resources, and support to succeed in college and beyond,” said Dr. Terrie Greenbaum, Daytona State’s project director.

The grant provides funding for services that include one-onone tutoring, scholarship support, individualized counseling (academic, transfer, personal, financial aid, and career), cultural trips and transfer college tours, peer mentoring and a Summer Bridge Program. Their services enhance academic success and make it more likely that students will graduate or transfer with the lowest possible debt.

“The work our staff does in TRIO has never mattered more, and we are excited to continue the important mission of supporting our 210 student participants as they navigate the complexities of higher education as well as our quickly-changing world,” said Greenbaum.

SSS is one of eight programs authorized by the Higher Education Act of 1968 designed to help income-eligible, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities successfully navigate post-secondary education from entrance through graduation.

UpSkill Now! Rapid Credentialing Programs Help Volusia and Flagler County Residents Get Back to Work In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Florida Department of Education awarded Daytona State College a training grant in excess of $900,000 to help get residents in Volusia and Flagler counties back to work. Funding will be used to support the College’s Rapid Credentialing programs, which are designed to be completed in as little as 18 weeks to assist unemployed, underemployed, or furloughed workers.

Daytona State offers nine programs as part of the project, and approximately 450 participants are expected to enroll in the training through May 2021. The programs include Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Office Support, CNC Milling, Lean Practitioner, HVAC Installer, Certified Production Technician, Fire Fighter, Correctional Officer and Emergency Medical Technician. Those programs lead to careers with an average salary of nearly $45,000.

“The nine programs we’ve identified for this rapid credentialing effort cover a broad spectrum of high-demand careers,” said Frank Mercer, Director of DSC’s Center for Business & Industry. “We’ve configured the training to allow the participant quick entry into these careers and to pathways to continue their education.”

DSC has increased capacity in these short-term, high-demand programs, many of which culminate in industry-recognized certification that can also articulate into higher level credentials such as A.S. or B.S. degrees.

“Opportunities afforded through rapid credentialing are boundless,” said Sherryl Weems, Associate Vice-President of the Mary Karl College of Workforce and Continuing Education. “Participants will receive immediate credentials that are relevant in today’s competitive markets while at the same time begin a viable pathway for career advancement, leveraging skills for tomorrow’s economy.”

An economic impact analysis conducted in 2018 showed the average certificate earned from Daytona State College results in increased earnings of $2,400 per year compared to that of a person with a high school diploma or its equivalent who is working in Florida. For those who continued their education and completed an associate degree, the average increase in annual earnings jumped to $6,100, or an additional $244,000 in additional lifetime income above a high school diploma or equivalency.

The grant was created through the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund as a part of the CARES Act to assist Daytona State in enrolling students in short-term, high-demand workforce/career certificate programs.

Daytona State Student Earns 2020 Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is one of the most prestigious awards given to community college students each year and in the spring of 2020, there were only 50 winners nationwide. One of those winners was Daytona State College student Alex Moker, a member of the Quanta-Honors College, who earned a scholarship valued up to $40,000 per year to complete his bachelor’s degree at a school of his choice.

The scholarships help cover the cost of all educational expenses such as tuition, books, required fees and living expenses.

Cooke Scholars are also eligible to apply for up to $75,000 of funding toward graduate school.

“Alex is the second student from Quanta-Honors to be selected in the last three years,” said Dr. Ben Graydon, chair of the DSC Quanta-Honors College. “He’s a terrific student and a kind and generous person. It’s wonderful to see him get this recognition and to know that he’ll have extraordinary resources to draw on as he moves forward.”

In addition to financial support, new Cooke Transfer Scholars will receive comprehensive educational advising from the Foundation to guide them through the process of transitioning to a four-year college and preparing for their careers. Scholars will receive additional

opportunities for internships, study abroad, and graduate school funding, as well as connections to a thriving network of over 2,700 fellow Cooke Scholars and alumni.

“When I was 16, I dropped out of high school and for a long time, I thought not having responsibilities would make me happy,” Alex said after earning the scholarship. “I decided two years ago I would give everything I had and would never let my insecurities stop me from doing my best, so I entered college. That was the best decision I ever made. Everyone has the ability within themselves to improve and rise to the top. I hope that any successes I have had serve as a beacon for others to do the same. Life is too short not to be bold, and to not take charge of our lives.”

Alex was a member of the Daytona State College Business Club, Phi Theta Kappa and worked as a peer tutor in the Academic Support Center. He completed all five sections of the Quanta-Honors program in just three semesters and received an additional academic award at the 2019 Arts & Sciences Colloquium.

After graduating from Daytona State last spring, he transferred to Stetson University and is planning to pursue his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science with a concentration in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Nearly 1,500 students from 311 state and community colleges applied for the Cooke Scholarship. The Foundation evaluated each submission based on students’ academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence, leadership, and service to others. The selected recipients represent 17 different states and plan to enroll at some of the nation’s most selective colleges.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is dedicated to advancing the education of exceptionally promising students who have financial need. Since 2000, the Foundation has awarded over $200 million in scholarships to over 2,700 students from eighth grade through graduate school, along with comprehensive educational advising and other support services. The Foundation has also provided $110 million in grants to organizations that serve such students.

Daytona State Lands 96 Students on FCSAA All-Academic Team At the end of each academic year, the Florida College System Activities Association acknowledges students from the 28 member institutions who have excelled academically while participating in FCSAA programs.

Those who have achieved a minimum 3.30 grade point average (on a 4.00 scale) are recognized as members of the FCSAA All-Academic Team, and Daytona State College had 96 students make the list.

Academic Support Rises to Meet the Challenge On a Wednesday morning in October 2020, the third-floor library inside the L. Gale Lemerand Student Center is extremely quiet and mostly empty. Quiet is a standard description of any library, but the empty part, on a college campus in the middle of a busy fall semester, feels unusual. For people such as Mercedes Clement, Chair of Library Services at Daytona State College, there is still quite a bit going on behind the scenes.

Just around the corner from the library, the same is true for Dana Davidson, Associate Director of the Academic Support Center, and Kristen Bales, Associate Director of the DSC Writing Center. They look across a space with few people, but plenty of activity. The pandemic may have forced or encouraged many students to spend more time at home, but they’re still able to conduct research, work with tutors or get help writing papers because of the diligence and hard work of Clement, Davidson, Bales and a host of others throughout the College.

When Daytona State temporarily closed its campuses last March and moved the remainder of the spring semester entirely online, the staff who oversaw student services were suddenly tasked with finding new ways to deliver resources to those who needed them.

“I think we were ahead of the curve,” said Clement. “We were already offering so many things online it wasn’t as difficult to make that switch as it might have been. I know of some other libraries at other colleges that weren’t able to do that.”

Info guides, tutorials on YouTube and online databases were already valuable tools, but Clement and her staff created even more content to help students through the process. The live chat feature on the DSC Library website was also a popular feature and something Clement said would likely become a permanent addition.

Another addition was the Virtual Librarian, though it’s only available in the library of the Daytona Beach Campus. By way of a limited-access meeting room on Microsoft Teams, cameras and computer screens, a DSC librarian remotely monitors the central desk from their office. The cameras are always on, allowing instant interaction between students and staff who are in different parts of the building. The librarian on duty can even share their screen if needed, offering the same level of attention and support as if they were physically present.

Bales echoed much of what Clement had to say when it came to their ability to transition to a fully online environment. “Our services are broken up with the multiple things we do for students, and virtual support had always been a part of that. We already had the infrastructure to scale up what we were doing all along.”

Bales admits to having some scary thoughts about how everything had to come together in such a short time, but was confident it could be done. “It was a unique challenge because we’re so community based.”

The Writing Center was physically closed for two months, but its online presence became stronger. Students were able to book 45-minute virtual appointments, the same amount of time they would normally get in a hands-on environment. Staffing was also adjusted to cover the additional use of the center’s live chat feature. The goal was to provide the same level of support normally available face-to-face, and as a result, almost 900 virtual consultations were scheduled during the Spring B and Summer terms.

Bales and her staff also discovered new ways of doing things that will likely remain part of their menu of services. A new blog was launched featuring more reflective writing and they also put more

energy into social media, which included “Write with Me Wednesdays” on Facebook Live. Much of it was designed to give students, or members of the community, a way to express themselves by writing for therapeutic reasons rather than school or work.

For now, all appointments and tutoring sessions are still being done remotely, but the Writing Center has expanded its evening and weekend hours, and Bales said those appointments typically fill up fast. It was a benefit of working from home, which allowed staff members to cover those spots even with some unusual hours.

When Davidson first heard the College was moving everything online, she too confessed to a moment of panic. “We were very much a face-to-face service point. We didn’t have an appointment-based system like the Writing Center did.

Almost everything was done on a walk-in basis. Once in a while we would meet with someone virtually, but it was the exception and not the rule.”

Nevertheless, the ASC quickly came up with a new process to make everything work. The biggest challenge in moving all tutoring to a virtual environment was making sure every staff member was properly trained in how to use the available technology and that included student tutors as well.

What emerged was a new structure that saw the ASC actually expand its hours both at night and on weekends and there was a dramatic surge in logins as a result. The numbers showed that 44% of their chat traffic was generated during the extended hours and has led Davidson to consider whether the so-called “normal operating hours” need to change. Meeting students where they are has been a common refrain and the ASC seems to be doing that better than ever as evidenced by their 1,150 online tutoring sessions in Spring B and Summer.

During this Fall 2020 semester, the ASC labs have been available by reservation and are often used to help set up students for virtual tutoring. Liz Barnes, Chair of Daytona State’s Academic Support, recognizes some students need to be there physically and reminds them they are still welcome to come in and use the computers and facilities. “Once they get over that techno-hump, get into an online meeting, and see how virtual tutoring works, they’re sold,” Barnes said. “We have real people, not chat-bots, who are here to help them get to that point.”

Above all, Barnes’ top priority was making sure students could get in touch with whomever they needed from day one. “It was an incredibly collaborative and innovative process and now we have a fully functional online service. It took a minute to pick it all up and figure things out, but we were still able to help students and evolve.”

“Student-focused,” “innovative” and “collaborative” are words Barnes uses over and over to describe how everything fits together. Along with Clement, their teams have overseen an incredible transformation in a relatively short time, with all of Daytona State’s academic services working together synchronously to ensure every need is met.

“We’ve learned to be flexible while still helping our students,” Clement said. “We follow the College and CDC protocols, and have designed things so they feel comfortable when they’re here. But if they don’t feel comfortable coming to campus, we’re still able to help them and they have the resources they need.”

“The online building blocks were already in place, so we didn’t have to build all of that from the ground up,” Barnes added.

STUDENT LIFE

Even though social distancing guidelines were in effect, the Student Life Office still wanted to offer a “first day” college experience to new Daytona State students. Daytona State staff members and student ambassadors staffed an information tent in Echo Plaza and provided directions to classes, campus maps, giveaways and more.

The Student Government Association thought out of the box when it came to meetings and responding to the needs of the student body. Virtual conferences, meetings and even social events became the norm as SGA officers and sponsors launched the 2020-21 school year.

Though meetings became virtual, members of the Mu Rho Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and their families were still able to participate in local events. One of those involved the cleanup of waterways through the chapter’s partnership with SPLASH (Stop Pollution Locally and Save H2O).

DAYTONA STATE CROSS COUNTRY

When Judy Wilson was hired to start the Daytona State College cross country program in 2018, she had already looked at times for the other top junior college teams in the country and knew what it would take for the fledgling Falcons to be among them. In four or five years, she thought, they could be there. As it turned out, they really needed just three.

After becoming the first school to ever win both the women’s and men’s Region 8/FCSAA Championships in the same season, Daytona State earned a trip to Fort Dodge, Iowa for the 2020 NJCAA Division II National Championships where the men placed fourth and the women were eighth. They were the best finishes for either squad since the sport was adopted by the College three years ago.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, cross country was the only NJCAA sport conducting a national championship event during the fall, and the only sport competing for Daytona State, an experience Wilson found bittersweet. She knows it was hard for other athletes and coaches who were unable to do so but was also pleased with how her own team responded to the situation.

“A few months ago, we didn’t even know if we were going to have a season, but the kids took it upon themselves to be ready if it happened,” said Wilson. “So much of cross country is about what you do in the summer anyway and self-discipline is a big part of that.

They came back ready to go.”

Wilson also acknowledged her sport has some inherent advantages over others when it comes to being able to practice and stage competition. “It’s a little easier being outside and we don’t have the big numbers you see in most other sports in terms of studentathletes. Cross country lends itself to distancing too.”

Leading the way for Daytona State was sophomore Andy Martinez, the FCSAA Men’s Runner of the Year who took fourth place in the men’s 8K race with a career-best time of 25:23.4 for his third top-five finish of the season. He spent most of the day battling for the lead before Melvin Kipkemboi of North Iowa Area Community College moved ahead over the final quarter of the race and won with a time of 24:58.77.

Sophomore Adam Mastrobuono finished 14th in the field of 145 runners with a time of 26:39.6 and joined Martinez on the NJCAA Division II All-American team based on their finish at the national finals. They are Daytona State’s first cross country All-Americans.

In the women’s 5K race, the Falcons were paced by freshman Harleigh Bilz who finished 18th in the field of 122 runners with a career-best and school-record time of 20:10.3. She was competing in cross country this season for the first time since graduating from high school in 2013. Bilz was previously the individual women’s champion at the Region 8/FCSAA Championships and was the FCSAA Women’s Runner of the Year.

In addition to the cross country competition in Iowa, the Daytona State men’s team also finished sixth in the NJCAA Half Marathon Championships. The Falcons scored 53 points (top three runners scored), with Iowa Central winning the title by scoring 15 points.

The Falcons were again led by Martinez who crossed the finish line in 1:12:22.1, good for 13th place individually.

Daytona State collected more hardware following the conclusion of the national championships when Wilson was named the Atlantic Region Men’s Coach of the Year, and Martinez was selected the Atlantic Region Male Athlete of the Year. The awards were voted on by members of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

MEET THE FACULTY

MARY BETH CRAIG-OATLEY

Mary Beth Craig-Oatley has been a full-time member of the Daytona State faculty for 16 years as an instructor and assistant chair in the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program, but her first experience with the College wasn’t in a classroom or an office. It was a simple picnic with her friends.

As college students at the University of Kansas in the 1970s, they had made a spring break pilgrimage to Daytona Beach as so many do, and needing a spot to eat lunch one day, a large grassy field at the front of campus was the perfect place.

More than four decades have come and gone, most of the field is now a parking lot, and there’s a lot more traffic zooming along International Speedway Boulevard. The campus has a different look too, and even a different name, but Daytona Beach and its namesake college have become home for Mary Beth, who helped start the OTA program as an adjunct professor in the early 90s before joining the faculty full-time in 2004. The journey from spring break visitor to college professor was a long one though and it included an extended stop in Heidelberg, Germany along the way.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy in 1979, Mary Beth began a professional career in her home state of Kansas and met her husband Jeff, a Floridian who was working on his graduate degree. The young couple would later move to Missouri and Arkansas before they were offered a unique opportunity that would not only allow them to further their careers but travel to a part of the world they may have never otherwise seen.

“We decided since we had no kids and no commitments, we’d go to Europe for a few years and work as civilians for the United States Army,” Mary Beth recalled. “I worked as an occupational therapist at the hospital in Heidelberg and my husband was at one of the outlying clinics. I learned a lot about the military culture and got in really good shape because we had to exercise all the time.”

Mary Beth’s primary job was helping soldiers recover from substance abuse, but she worked in sports medicine too, specializing in upper extremity injuries. Meanwhile, she was busy learning a new culture and building on her limited German vocabulary, though Mary Beth did have a little experience with both. Her great-grandmother had immigrated from Germany and spoke the language fluently, and Mary Beth’s mother had taught her some simple words and phrases, but there were still wide gaps between what she had learned back in the U.S. and what she was experiencing every day in her new home.

“Even though Germany is a very developed country, they do things very differently from the way we do them in the U.S., little things that make you say, ‘Oh wow, so you do that?’.”

One of the things Mary Beth enjoyed was how most businesses were completely closed on Sundays except for local cafés and cultural centers such as museums. People would spend the day simply enjoying the city and the company of friends and family, and a much more walkable environment and well-developed public transit system made everything more accessible.

Mary Beth and her husband took advantage of everything Germany had to offer, exploring the country or other places in Europe whenever time allowed. They spent nearly seven years there before returning to the U.S. when their oldest son, who was born in Germany, was ready to begin school. That brought them to Florida, where Jeff’’s mother, grandmother and brother still lived, but Mary Beth admits it was a toss-up as to whether the culture shock was greater moving from Kansas to Germany or Germany to Florida.

“I’d visited Florida before then, but it took some time getting used to living here. It was almost a year before it felt normal. The transportation and how people lived their daily lives just felt so different. I’d go the grocery store and there would be 10 types of green beans, whereas in the smaller German stores you might have two.”

While in Germany, Mary Beth had earned her Master’s in Human Resource Education through an overseas program with Boston University that was developed for military personnel. But it wasn’t until she arrived in Florida that it really paid off. While working in long-term care, Mary Beth oversaw in-services, training and orientation, which gave her the opportunity to teach in addition to working with patients. It made her realize how much she enjoyed teaching and Mary Beth was soon part of a group that was working with Daytona State to establish a new Occupational Therapy Assistant Program, a process that began when local practitioners determined there was a shortage of qualified OTAs in the area.

Beyond the classroom and her time as a teacher, Mary Beth still enjoys traveling with her husband and two sons (both of whom are DSC alums), especially the periodic trips back home to Kansas where she owns property that has been passed down through her grandparents and parents. Closer to home, she enjoys volunteering with her church, especially its Caregivers Day Out program which gives caregivers a break to take care of their own personal needs while ensuring their family members receive proper care and attention. Mary Beth also works at a camp for people with disabilities during the summer when she’s not teaching, something she considers one of the most important things she does.

Once the program was active in 1994, Mary Beth became one of the first adjuncts, and ten years later was hired as a full-time professor.

She now teaches Advanced Practice & Professionalism for students who are at the end of the academic portion of the program and preparing for their fieldwork, along with Human Occupation Across the Lifespan for first-year students. She also teaches a Psych and Social class that prepares students to work with patients diagnosed with disorders such as autism, dementia or schizophrenia.

“We’re required to train them as generalists, meaning they need to learn about all the areas they might eventually be in. They need to learn about children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. They need to learn about all the physical and mental conditions they might face. Some students come into the program knowing there’s an area where they might want to specialize, but while they’re here, they need to learn all of it.”

Mary Beth’s own experience in occupational therapy, whether in Germany or in the United States, gave her the type of knowledge base she needed in order to teach the set of wide-ranging classes her students are required to take. But there was still the challenge of learning how to pass that knowledge along in such a way that students were ready to begin professional careers of their own.

Her master’s degree helped prepare her for that, but Mary Beth still had to adjust her mindset when it came to teaching others in a classroom setting.

“For almost anyone who has been a clinician working out in the field, becoming an educator is a big shift. We’re ready to teach them everything we know and they’re not ready for that yet. We have to temper that a little bit and be willing to start where they are.”

Looking back at the course of her life and career, Mary Beth has traveled a fascinating road to get where she is today, from America’s Heartland across the Atlantic Ocean and back to the United States via Daytona Beach. As one of the founders of Daytona State’s OTA program she’s seen a lot of changes over the last 25 years and is reminded of that when she sees new buildings and facilities open, a more frequent occurrence of late.

“It’s been nice to see it progress through the years and it’s interesting to look back on all of it. But the new things that are happening at the College right now are all good.”

Mary Beth must also balance her role as an instructor with her responsibilities as Assistant Chair of the OTA program, which this year includes the re-accreditation process. It happens once every 5-10 years and involves a tremendous amount of extra time and paperwork, all to make sure Daytona State’s OTA program remains among the best in the country, and that students are being properly trained for the profession.

Libby spearheads permanent art collection at Lemerand Student Center Since opening in the spring of 2019, the L. Gale Lemerand Student Center has become the most recognizable building at Daytona State College. Its striking architecture is clearly visible to thousands of motorists from nearby International Speedway Boulevard, but while the building itself could be called a work of art, the inside is filled with the more conventional variety thanks to the efforts of Gary Libby.

Libby, the Director Emeritus of the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona, had a connection to the College through Forough Hosseini, a trustee of the museum who was also Chair of the DSC District Board of Trustees until 2019.

She invited Libby to a luncheon with College President Tom LoBasso and as the three of them discussed plans for the student center’s interior and how it might be decorated, Libby asked a question: “What about having a permanent collection of work done by former students, current students, faculty, or individuals who have a distinct connection to Daytona State?”

They loved the idea, but before Libby went to work, he elicited a promise from Dr. LoBasso. Libby asked him to speak with the architect about the plans to incorporate a collection of art that would be placed on the walls throughout the student center. He emphasized the need for well-lit walls without any “clutter” that would allow that space to be filled with the type of art that would highlight the success of the students and faculty who were doing exceptional work in many areas.

“Usually, new buildings are built with no real thought about anything going on the walls, so you often have light switches in the wrong place, or a vent right in the middle… they can just kill a wall,” he said. “But this building was designed beautifully.”

Libby also wanted to be careful not to detract from anything the neighboring Southeast Museum of Photography was doing with its own exhibits and galleries. So, with rare exceptions, the decision was made not to include photography among the pieces displayed in the student center.

County Art in Public Places program, as well as the state level program, and was also on the committee that selected art for Daytona Beach International Airport. He suggested using similar criteria to make the selections for the Lemerand Student Center.

“It’s a shame you can’t just pick the things you like, but you have to pick things you like that are also high-quality objects and meet the qualifications you’ve set. We wanted it to be a serious permanent collection of contemporary art that represented what the College was able to produce.”

With that in mind, the art was solicited by invitation only and an impressive collection was assembled. It’s expected that as more art is gathered, the work on display will be rotated. Libby anticipates adding three-dimensional pieces into the collection too.

“Having a permanent collection in a place like the Lemerand Student Center is a huge benefit for a working artist. It’s an important building with a lot of visibility.”

It was at the University of Florida that Gary developed his love for art, though it wasn’t what originally drew him to Gainesville or to college. He attended Florida on a golf scholarship and was initially in the pre-med program, but as an 18-year old freshman, stumbled upon the art gallery during the opening of the university’s new art and architecture complex. He admits it was the look of the building that caught his attention.

Libby was soon attending exhibitions on a regular basis and while he continued taking pre-med courses through his junior year, he also began taking as many art and art history classes as he could.

“Art history took me over. It just fascinated me.”

At the time, Libby thought it would be a relatively easy project but came to realize he would need some help and knew exactly where to go. Pam Griesinger, former Program Manager of Studio Arts at Daytona State, had recently retired after spending more than 30 years teaching and working with the very people whose work Libby wanted to display.

After earning several degrees, including his Ph.D., Libby became an assistant professor at Stetson University and taught several courses in a new humanities major. It was the perfect fit for Libby, who enjoyed it so much that even after being hired as Executive Director at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in 1977, he continued to teach art history courses as an adjunct at Stetson.

She was the logical choice for the committee Libby would form, along with himself and Dr. LoBasso. Each had particular areas of interest or expertise, and all of them were willing to put in the time.

It was during his time at the Museum and Stetson that Libby made his first connections to what was then Daytona Beach Community College. He’s thankful Dr. LoBasso and Forough Hosseini invited him to be a part of what the College is doing today and is pleased to see what’s happening on campus.

Their first task was setting the criteria to select each artist and their work. There were thousands of potential students and faculty from which to choose and narrowing that list down would be an even greater challenge without guidelines. That’s where Libby’s experience came into play. He had been involved in the Volusia 16 | DAYTONA STATE MAGAZINE • WINTER 2021

“Daytona State is a first-class institution,” he said. “You’ve got very good leadership and it’s moving in a direction that is very sympathetic with what’s happening in the culture today.”

Mike and Linda Curb continue their support of DSC with $750,000 gift Unrest over policing following the George Floyd killing this past summer was the backdrop of a conversation that led to new opportunities for students interested in emergency services careers through a generous gift from Mike Curb and the Curb Foundation.

Music mogul and philanthropist Mike Curb shared with Daytona State College President Tom LoBasso this about his father’s law-enforcement career: He never had to fire his gun. “My dad was an FBI agent. He didn’t get to make very much money, but he was a great man,” Curb said.

In December, the DSC Board of Trustees unanimously approved a naming rights and endowment agreement with a gift of $500,000 that names the Charles M. Curb School of Emergency Services as a tribute to Mike’s father, and adds $250,000 to the existing endowment that named the Mike Curb College of Music, Entertainment and Art in 2008.

“We’re grateful for Mike’s ongoing support,” Dr. LoBasso said.

“With everything going on this summer, we were talking about Daytona State and our law enforcement academy that is the training facility for law enforcement professionals in Volusia and Flagler counties.

This generous endowment gift will help us with recruiting and enhancing programs to make our police academy the very best in the State.”

The agreement also calls for Daytona State College and Bethune-Cookman University to seek ways to collaborate, and the schools’ presidents have begun talking about possible articulation agreements ensuring a smooth transition from DSC’s two-year program to B-CU’s four-year program.

“We need a very new, diverse group of talent in the areas of music and entertainment and emergency services,” Curb said in a phone interview with The News-Journal. “This is a real opportunity for Bethune-Cookman and Daytona State to work together.”

Mike Curb, An Extraordinarily Influential Life Imagination. Ingenuity. Passion. Drive. Generosity.

Many words could describe music mogul, politician, racing aficionado and philanthropist Mike Curb, but these five certainly capture the essence of a compassionate, ‘make-the-most-of-everyopportunity’ person whose life has been guided by seminal influences from his earliest days.

His grandmother, Eloise Salazar, who migrated north to America from Laredo, Mexico, and who Curb says, “loved America…and believed the highest calling was to serve your country,” taught him about a life of service in the private and public arenas.

His father and mother, Charles and Stella Stout, met in Pittsburgh, Pa. when FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover, asked Charles – fresh out of law school at Oklahoma State University – to join the FBI and he was sent to Pittsburgh on an investigation. “He didn’t find the information he wanted, but he found a beautiful girl,” reported Curb.

And, they were off to a life that would take them to Charleston, SC, Savannah, GA, Prescott, AZ, Oklahoma City and Los Angeles.

Moving from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles, more specifically to Compton/Watts, when he was five, Curb experienced music from the African American churches in his community. The influence of that music launched his interest and involvement in a wide variety of genres from soul, R&B, rock and roll, to country, Christian and more.

Curb parlayed his love of music into a life that has included writing more than 300 songs with more than 100 ASCAP, BMI and SESAC award-winning songs; 4,825 Billboard Charted Records, including 41 #1 records and 1,609 top-ten records; scoring or writing for more than 50 films; and, being credited with putting rock-n-roll into films.

“The Mike Curb Congregation,” the musical group Curb formed, had a Top 40 pop hit in early 1971, Burning Bridges, that was used as the theme of the film Kelly’s Heroes.

Along the way, Curb’s love of music – playing piano and violin by ear, and having a real connection to “music that has a feel to it” –

At the start of it all, Curb penned “(Go Little Honda) You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda,” for which he was paid $3,000. That meager sum provided the start-up funding that launched his first record company, Sidewalk Records.

Today, CURB/Word Entertainment, for which Curb is Chairman and CEO, includes Curb Records, music publishing, film, racing plus a foundation and more.

Business, Politics and Racing About the same time that he was embarking on a career in the music business at the age of 25 as the President of MGM Records, he met Linda Dunphy, daughter of a well-known L.A. television newscaster.

Eight years later, with diversions along the way, Mike and Linda married in April 1978. Talk to him today and it is readily apparent that their relationship, begun more than 50 years ago, remains strong and enduring, even as the achievements of their lives together has blossomed.

In the earlier years, Mike’s laser-focus on business in the entertainment capital of the world, L.A., led to a key introduction that would thrust him onto the political stage.

Among the great influences that gave him the ‘chops’ for business was his involvement in Junior Achievement. As a high schooler in the 1950s, Curb was involved in JA, which he credits with helping him begin to understand business and entrepreneurship.

It was in the context of Curb’s involvement with JA that he met Ronald Reagan. They were both speaking at a JA luncheon at a time when Reagan had just concluded his second term as Governor of California. Impressed with Curb’s speech, Reagan asked Curb to secure entertainment for his planned run as a presidential candidate. That luncheon led to deep involvement in organizing, fundraising and, ultimately, Curb being named Co-Chair of Reagan’s California campaign.

With Reagan’s encouragement and elevated statewide recognition, Curb ran and was elected Lieutenant Governor of California in 1978; during his term in office he was Acting Governor at many points in time as then-Governor Jerry Brown was out of state campaigning as a candidate for the 1980 Democratic nomination for president.

His political career came to an end following his defeat in a run for California Governor in 1982, but his involvement chairing national campaign efforts and his personal friendship with President Ronald Reagan cemented another life-influencing relationship.

By 1985, Curb had returned to the record business full time and from there he signed an even more impressive list of artists that includes LeAnn Rimes, Tim McGraw, Wynonna Judd, Lyle Lovett and Hank Williams.

For most of his adult life Curb has been involved in the motorsports business as a spectator and owner. Drivers including Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Dale Jarrett and many others who have competed for more than 40 years in the NASCAR circuit or in other major motorsports events, including winning the Indianapolis 500 and winning at Daytona International Speedway, competed with the Curb name on their cars.

The Curb-owned racing team scored a major victory at the famed Daytona International Speedway in 1984, which was Richard Petty’s historic 200th victory, with President Ronald Reagan in attendance. Most recently, the ThorSport/Curb Records truck driven by Grant Enfinger won the NASCAR Gander Truck Regular Season Championship and the 2020 Great American Truck Race in Daytona.

Jessica Paugh selected as new Curb School of Emergency Services Director

Philanthropy and Daytona State Among all the remarkable achievements in his life, perhaps Curb’s greatest legacy is that of his philanthropic investments.

The Mike Curb Foundation has provided grants and gifts totaling more than $100 million in support of education, historic preservation, homelessness and a wide range of services in communities associated with Curb enterprises. At his alma mater, California State University, where several major campus components bear his name, as well as in Nashville at Belmont University, where the Curbs moved in 1992, these institutions’ music performance, business and technology programs have been the beneficiaries of Curb’s generosity.

As to Daytona State, $250,000 of the Curbs’ $750,000 gift will add to the previously established endowment that named the Mike Curb College of Music, Entertainment and Art. This endowment provides transformative financial support for “Curb Scholars” studying music performance, business, production technology and other programs in the Curb College. $500,000 of the gift will create a new permanent endowment and name the Charles M. Curb School of Emergency Services, the School at DSC that provides opportunities for students preparing for careers in law enforcement and other first responder professions. The gift also encourages DSC to create partnerships with Bethune-Cookman University whereby DSC students might complete a four-year major in criminal justice at B-CU following completion of an Associate’s degree at DSC. With this naming gift, students preparing for careers in law enforcement will have access to financial support for their education and criminal justice programs will be able to secure program development support.

With more than 20 years of local law enforcement experience, she is focused on the future of law enforcement and public safety.

Paugh began her career in the Holly Hill Police Department in 1997. In 2004, she joined the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, serving as a deputy and investigator before being promoted to sergeant in 2010. She earned promotion to lieutenant in 2013, with additional duties in internal affairs, community services and in the department’s school resource program.

Paugh was named Deputy Chief of the New Smyrna Police Department in 2017 and held that position until recently joining Daytona State. In 2018, she graduated from the FBI National Academy, an elite program comprised of fewer than one percent of the nation’s law enforcement officers.

“As a 23-year veteran police officer within Volusia County, Jessica was uniquely qualified with her experience, dedication, and energy,” said Dr. Colin Chesley, Associate Vice President of the College of Health and Public Services. “Jessica’s role in the professional standards division of both the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and the New Smyrna Beach Police Department is a testament to her integrity and ability to see training deficits.”

“She also spent much of her time on recruitment efforts, with a dedicated focus on the recruitment of minorities and women alike. Focusing on the future of law enforcement, she has already added to our academy such things as a virtual training simulator, which will further strengthen our training on de-escalation, implicit bias, and use-of-force, as well as including body worn cameras and other training equipment to the recruit’s daily uniform.”

Additional instruction directly related to building unity within the community, while valuing and respecting diversity, has also been incorporated into the prescribed FDLE curriculum, taught

by DeLand Police Chief Jason Umberger. A secondary program addition, coined “Conversations with Police,” features community members in small groups participating in topic-driven frank conversations with police officers.

“I think it’s important to have a progressive mindset when training our new recruits,” said Paugh. “My direction is to keep up with the current and future trends of policing and build on our existing success to ensure we continue producing the highest level of training available to our recruits. As law enforcement evolves, so will DSC.” Over the last five decades, the Charles M. Curb School of Emergency Services has produced thousands of law enforcement officers and first responders, and graduates who pass the State Officer Certification Exam qualify for employment anywhere in the State of Florida.

KEITH KENNEDY

Keith Kennedy’s 40-year affiliation with Daytona State College began based on a misunderstanding. It may be a humorous anecdote now, but in 1979, the mistake could have had disastrous consequences for a young man who was just trying to earn a degree and find his place in the world. What he found though was a place he has called home for four decades, one that has become deeply intertwined with the life it gave him.

Now Daytona State’s Vice President for Student Development, there is no aspect of the College that Keith has not had direct experience with at some point. He arrived as a student in 1980 and never really left, working his way up from student employee to his current position as a College administrator. He’s been a tutor, advisor, career employee, part of the professional staff and a faculty member. He’s been part-time and full-time and spent more hours on campus than he could ever count. The College has had just seven presidents in a history spanning nearly 65 years and Keith has worked for five of them. He’s been a part of that history himself, though he still has a hard time believing it’s been 40 years.

As for how it all began, Keith smiles when he talks about the error that brought him to what was then called Daytona Beach Community College all those years ago. “I had a scholarship to attend Bethune-Cookman, and I thought it was a four-year scholarship.

Come to find out, it only lasted one. Since I didn’t have any money, and I didn’t know anybody who had any money, I had to drop out and go to work.”

Keith’s education wasn’t on hold for very long, however. While living in nearby DeLand, he had a friend who was attending DBCC and encouraged him to enroll. They’d be able to make the drive together and take some of the same classes, so Keith accepted the offer and earned his A.A. in 1982. During his time as a student, he also worked as a tutor with TRiO Support Services, which marked the beginning of his career as a College employee, even before he became an alum.

After graduating, Keith knew he wanted to continue his education but knew he still needed to work too. Fortunately, the College was able to help in both of those areas, starting with a part-time job in facilities working as part of the “scrub crew.”

“We went around and scrubbed floors after hours,” Keith said.

“There were five or six of us that would go from building to building, from 6 p.m. to midnight. Doing that, I met some very good people, mentors who told me I had the potential to go on and do great things, and I started listening to them.”

Among the people Keith met during his early years at DBCC were Lucy Bell, Director of Professional Development, and Walter Howard, Dean of Student Development. They made a life-changing impact on the young student-turned-employee and helped provide him with the tools he needed to advance his career to heights he couldn’t imagine at the time.

Keith still isn’t entirely sure why he was one of those picked, but with the support of Drs. Bell and Howard, he was accepted into the College’s staff development program. As part of that program, the College helped employees with the cost of school, and Keith used that perk to obtain two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Central Florida. He eventually earned a Master’s in Counselor Education from UCF too, all while continuing to move through the ranks at Daytona State.

From 1984-95, he worked in the Student Life Department, was a counselor with TRiO Student Support Services and after earning his master’s degree, served as Coordinator of Recruitment. In 1995, he was promoted to Director of Admissions, the first of four different director’s positions he held before being named Assistant Dean of Judicial Affairs and Disability Services in 2008. He later spent three years as Dean of Student Development, was named an associate vice president in 2013, and eventually Vice President of Student Development in 2016, the position he currently holds. It’s the culmination of a long journey that started with Keith simply getting into a car with his buddy in 1980 and making the short drive from DeLand over to Daytona Beach.

Among the things he is most proud of during his time at DSC was the creation of the Minority Student Development Council. It brought Black and Hispanic high school students to campus once a year for a day of programming that exposed them to everything the College and a college education had to offer. On another occasion, Keith was also able to secure funding that allowed the College to become the first in Florida to develop an after-school program that focused on young African American males. He was pleased to see many of those students go on to colleges and universities across the state and was thankful for the support local businesses gave when they learned about what he was doing.

One reason Keith has been so successful when it comes to securing that type of pledge, financial or otherwise, is his own level of commitment to those projects, such as Daytona State’s Men of Character Initiative (MOCI). The purpose of MOCI is to increase the retention and graduation of men of color by offering activities and services that address their academic needs and personal development, and it’s something Keith is fully behind, whether obtaining the backing of others or direct support himself.

“I didn’t think I’d still be here 40 years later. I thought, ‘Hey, I need a job’, they hired me, and I said I’ll just do the best I can and see what happens. I don’t know where all the years went. I’ve had people tell me, ‘Man you’ve been here a long time’, but it just doesn’t feel that way.”

Keith’s resumé is filled with words such as “student development,” “community outreach” and “support services,” and they accurately describe what he has meant to the College and the important role he has played in helping students achieve the same type of success he has found. The day he was named Dean of Student Development holds a special place in his memory because he was named to the same position one of his mentors, Dr. Howard, held many years earlier. It was something he could have never imagined as a young college student on the same campus where he now works, but he was proud to be following in the footsteps of the man who had helped open the door to his career.

The best part of Keith’s job now as Vice President of Student Development is getting to work with students and staff alike.

Helping others grow to their full potential is deeply engrained in him, something he credits his grandparents for instilling. They were very active in their community and Keith dedicated himself to being just as involved as they were, all while being a role model for his children.

“I’m standing on the shoulders of so many people who helped me get to where I am. It’s a way to pay that back,” Keith says of his community involvement.

“Don’t ask for something unless you’ve got some skin in the game too,” he said. “Businesses appreciate that. I’m not going to ask for a dollar unless I’m willing to put in two.”

With retirement now on the horizon, Keith has thought a lot about what his life might be like in the coming years and has long dreamed of living quietly on a farm somewhere. “I could just chill on the farm, come into town every once in a while, and then go back,” he says with a laugh.

But he doesn’t think he’ll be leaving Daytona State completely. If the College needs his help, he’ll answer the call, just as he’s been doing for 40 years in one fashion or another.

Tucked away in a heavily wooded area off State Road 40 in Ormond Beach is a small historical site that few even know exists. The roadside marker offers a clue that something important was once located there, but it’s mostly been forgotten over the centuries. All that’s left now are a small collection of ruins that in 1765 were part of North America’s first sugar plantation and distillery.

Almost 250 years later, Daytona State graduate Jenni Craig is helping bring a piece of Florida’s forgotten history into the present as one of four co-owners of Copper Bottom Distillery, located in Holly Hill.

Holly Hill is a municipality now, but in the 18th century, the location where Copper Bottom now sits was part of 20,000 acres given to Scottish merchant Sir Richard Oswald by King George III, a portion of which was used to produce that first batch of American rum. The company’s website even pays homage to that long-ago land grant with the tag line “Bringing the Craft of Distilling Back to its Roots.”

“When we decided to start a business, it was originally going to be a brewery,” said Jenni. “But there’s a brewery on every corner now, so we decided to crank it up a notch and open a distillery instead.”

Growing up in Port Orange, Jenni is familiar with the area’s history, and the business she runs with her husband, Jeremy, and his parents, plays off Florida’s legacy of east coast sugar mills and rum runners. It’s part of a $3.2 billion craft beverage industry, and most are small, family-run operations.

“My father-in-law is the CEO with a manufacturing background,” Jenni explains, noting his prior experience in the industry where he opened breweries for some of the biggest brands in the country.

“My mother-in-law handles the finances and does the bookeeping, Jeremy is head of operations and I bring the marketing piece.”

Specializing in rum and vodka, Copper Bottom has been open for nearly five years now and their products can be found in nearly 100 locations across Florida, from neighborhood restaurants and pubs to retail stores. Every drop is produced in-house from start to finish, an uncommon practice in the industry. They also offer distillery tours and a tasting room for those who want to buy directly from the source. There are even Tesla charging stations outside, a clever marketing strategy that brings a few more customers through the door.

“We found out that if we had Tesla stations, they would add us to their destination list on their in-car app. Now if someone’s driving through Florida and looking for a charger, we’ll pop up on the map.”

Tesla may be putting Copper Bottom on a literal map, but Jenni’s experience in marketing and communications has done the same figuratively. Her business sense goes all the way back to her decision to attend Daytona State College in 2003 when she realized her scholarship money would go a lot further there than it would at a more expensive state university, while still earning a degree.

Circumstances such as that only strengthen the bond between a small business and the local population that supports them, and it’s a sign that Copper Bottom Distillery is fully invested in the community. Having someone like Jenni Craig, who already had deep roots in the area, helps too. So much of who she is and what she learned was developed within a few short miles of where her family’s business now operates. Many of the people she met at the College have made a lasting impact on her life, including the late David Riban, a professor who taught physical science, physics and astronomy.

After graduating from Daytona State in 2005, Jenni transferred to the University of Florida where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 2007 and soon after, began a career in college athletics. After working a few years at a small school in Marietta, Georgia, Jenni returned home in 2013 as Director of Sports Marketing at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She still works full-time at ERAU, as Director of Philanthropic Organizations.

Jenni laughs when she thinks about balancing her “day job” with some of the late nights, early mornings and weekends the family business requires, not to mention her role as immediate past president of the Holly Hill Chamber of Commerce while also working on her master’s degree in leadership. She enjoys every minute of it though, especially working with her husband Jeremy. “I think if we weren’t doing something like this, we’d be looking to. The interest is there, and I’d still be looking for an entrepreneurship opportunity.”

The Craigs have capitalized on this after putting together a business plan that was calculated to the penny. They used every resource at their disposal, talked to anyone they could find who had done it, thoroughly researched potential locations, and sent Jeremy to study at Moonshine University, a place that actually exists in Louisville, Kentucky. It all came together in 2016 when the doors to Copper Bottom Distillery opened and Jenni’s life became a lot busier.

“It’s non-stop, but what’s been really cool is to see how this has become a meeting place for a lot of people,” Jenni said, smiling as she talks about some of the reunions she’s seen, or how people now visit year after year when they make annual visits to the area.

Copper Bottom received national recognition from news outlets like MSNBC and USA Today as one of the first distilleries in the country to begin producing hand sanitizer during the pandemic. Jeremy came up with the idea after seeing the empty shelves at local grocery stores, knowing they already had the necessary equipment and ingredients at the distillery. They decided to make as much as they could until their supplies ran out and give it to as many people as possible. But when local citizens learned what they were doing, the community responded in kind and donations started pouring in.

“We had a line around the building,” Jenni said of the days immediately after the story broke. “If we had just done it by ourselves, we might have lasted three days with what we had, but it turned into a community cause with so many people donating supplies. It was very emotional, especially when you see these ladies bringing in half a bag of sugar because it was all they had in their pantry to give and it was the only way they could help.”

“He was a genius. I could take him schoolwork from other classes, and he would help me with it, especially math and statistics, and show me different ways of doing those things that I would understand. Having access to someone like that who was so brilliant… those are the type of people you have there.”

Sitting in the cafeteria between classes and trips to the beach or flea market with friends are other experiences that made a strong impression and she hopes her own two daughters, now five and three, follow a similar path.

“I graduated high school at 17, so going away for college was something I wasn’t ready to do yet. I was able to continue living at home with my family and work through college to pay for anything my scholarships didn’t cover without having to take out loans. It was the right decision for sure. That’s the route I hope my children follow too. I could absolutely see them at Daytona State one day, too.”

BLAKE BUCK

By his own admission, Blake Buck really didn’t have much interest in school as a teenager growing up in Daytona Beach around the turn of the century. It wasn’t that he had no interest in education, and he could easily prove he was a good student, even an exceptional one, but it was more a question of whether he really needed to be in school at that point in his life.

It should be noted that Blake is also a Daytona State College graduate with a Bachelor’s of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) who compiled a near-perfect GPA, owns his own technology solutions company, has a wonderful family and is doing quite well, all of which happened after he decided to stop attending high school in 11th grade. At the risk of alarming parents everywhere, that unconventional decision worked and set him on the path to where he is today.

As the founder of Rising Empire Technologies, Blake manages all the tech needs for Details Flowers, an Ormond Beach based company whose software assists florists and designers with all of their business needs. Together, they process millions of dollars in transactions every year and it keeps Blake on-call virtually 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Though he’s currently the sole employee of the company he founded in March 2017, he ruefully admits he’s probably reached a point where he could use more help, but the arrival of the COVID-19 virus delayed any plans to expand his staff.

“When you work by yourself, you learn to put systems in place to try to prevent emergencies, but things still happen,” Blake said.

“I’ve somehow trained myself that when I hear a certain notification sound while I’m sleeping, I immediately wake up and look at my phone.”

For now, though, his growing business is giving him the life he wants to live. That life began in New Orleans before he moved with his family to Florida at the age of eight. Fascinated with all forms of technology, Blake learned how to program by the time he was 12, and at 15 he had started his first business venture, selling computers.

While most kids that age might hate the thought of working even a part-time job, Blake loved it, understanding that with more work came more money. Of course, there was still school to worry about and in Blake’s mind, that’s where the problem was.

“I was accepted into the International Baccalaureate Program and had the option of going to different high schools. I looked at Mainland, Seabreeze and Atlantic, and they all had programs I could get into, but I really wasn’t interested in school at the time.”

Though Blake was taking classes through the Florida Virtual School, even that was in the way of what he really wanted, which was the opportunity to start a career and launch himself full-time into the real world. His parents agreed, but there were two conditions, and one of them fell exactly in line with what he wanted to do in the first place.

The first of those was a requirement to earn his GED. Coincidentally, a friend of Blake’s had also given him the same idea. Since he was still a minor, Blake was not allowed to work more than 30 hours a week under normal conditions, but if he had his GED, that restriction would no longer apply.

The second condition was that Blake would take at least one semester of college after completing his GED. It didn’t seem unreasonable, so Blake agreed to the terms, doing it all at Daytona State. Once that was complete, he was free to do what he wanted, and not long after earning the GED in 2001, he moved to Brandon, Florida, to become a Target manager at the age of 18.

Blake spent seven years with the retail giant, and estimates he worked at 10 different stores from Florida to Virginia but eventually realized his career had stalled without further education. “Every time I wanted a promotion, they told me I had to have a bachelor’s degree.

I’d pretty much hit the ceiling with what I could do without a degree.”

That prompted Blake and his wife to move back to Florida from Virginia so Blake could return to college at Daytona State. He can’t help but note the irony of that when compared to his outlook as a teenager. “I didn’t like school when I was in high school but when I went back, I loved it. I was trying to do the best that I could.”

When he came back in 2008, Blake did not originally plan on staying at Daytona State for a bachelor’s degree. The plan was to get his A.A. and then transfer to another school for the bachelor’s, but in 2010, the College established the Information Systems concentration in its new BS in Engineering Technology program. With an interest in technology that dated back to his early childhood, Blake now had the opportunity to pursue that without ever leaving Daytona State.

While going to school and continuing to work full-time, Blake pushed forward and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in 2014. That makes him among the first to follow the BSIT path at Daytona State, and in the six years since then, he’s already founded his own successful business using his DSC degree.

As for the kid who grew up not having much use for school, Blake’s about-face in that regard produced a 3.97 college GPA with only a single B after returning to Daytona State in 2008.

Blake’s connection to Daytona State goes beyond his GED, A.A. and bachelor’s degrees. After graduation, he spent nearly a year and a half as a learning specialist with the College before deciding to pursue an online master’s degree at Georgia Tech, which boasts one of the nation’s top-rated computer science programs. It seemed like it would fit perfectly into his evolving schedule, which included new-born twin daughters in addition to a five-year old son. But a funny thing happened instead.

Ron Eaglin, Chair of the School of Engineering Technology, connected Blake with a woman named Corrine Heck, the founder of Details Flowers. “Ron is a great guy and he knows everybody. He’s the one who helped get everything started. He was trying to introduce me to some different people, and I was telling him, ‘You know, I’m really not interested in another job doing app development’. But he said, no you really need to meet her (Corrine). So, we went to lunch one day, she told me about her software and what she was doing, and I gave it some thought. We started working together in August 2016, and I started my company in March of 2017.”

Now, as a successful business owner, Blake can look back on his time at Daytona State with a different perspective than the one he had as a teenager who was more or less just dropping in to get a GED and move on. He also notes how many friends he made there, including Eaglin and Patrick Vilkinofsky, who he took classes with as a student and is now Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity and Cyberforensics.

“I can’t say Daytona State taught me how to program, but it definitely gave me opportunities to try some different challenges. The IT program encompasses security, data bases and networking, which I didn’t know, and learning those things has helped me because I have to do all of them in my job now.”

By the time Rachael Hamlett was a 16-year old junior at Spruce Creek High School in the early 2000s, she already knew she wanted to become a nurse. She had grown up the daughter of a nurse and it seemed like a natural fit based on her own interests. Spruce Creek even offered a patient care technician program that allowed students to dual enroll at what was then known as Daytona Beach Community College, where they could spend the second half of their day getting more hands-on experience. With her mother’s encouragement, Rachael enrolled in the program and took her first steps toward becoming a nurse, only to discover along the way there was something else she was called to do that she could have never imagined.

Nursing is indeed a big part of Rachael’s professional life, but she also co-owns SLS Interpreting Services in Ormond Beach along with another Daytona State alum, Debbie Smith. The business organization works with the Deaf community to provide clear communication through sign language for clients throughout Volusia and Flagler counties, and their work can take them almost anywhere. Rachael can be found on television or at community meetings interpreting for the governor or local emergency officials but is just as likely to be helping individuals in schools, hospitals, doctor’s offices or court houses. Wherever she’s needed, Rachael is prepared to go, and she’s equally devoted to both of her professional roles.

Though her younger self would be very surprised to see how her life has played out, it all started coming together for Rachael during those early years at Daytona State.

Debbie also comes from a medical background but operates more behind the scenes and keeps the business flowing smoothly. She originally attended Daytona State as part of the EMS program and picked up a second A.S. degree in American Sign Language before a successful career with Volusia County Emergency Services and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

After graduating from high school and shifting from dual enrolment to full-time college student, Rachael was working toward her degree in nursing when she began taking elective classes in American Sign Language. What started out as a fun way to earn a few credits evolved into something more serious and the doors to a new world were suddenly opened.

“If you had asked me in 2000 where I’d be in 2020, I would have told you in a hospital, with a focus on nursing administration. Nursing was where I thought my entire career was going.” Rachael said.

She joined SLS Interpreting in 2005 while still working for the county, and helped its founder, Sonny Searles run the business following his wife’s death. When Sonny passed away in 2012, it was up to Debbie and Rachael to keep things running.

“We really just knew each other by name and would occasionally see each other at events,” said Debbie. “I guess you could say we were often in touch with each other in that way, but never thought we’d be running a business together someday.”

“She knew business and I knew interpreting,” said Rachael.

“We couldn’t have done it without each other.”

Two of Rachael’s ASL instructors at Daytona State were Chuck Barber and the same Sonny Searles for whom she would later work.

Barber, who himself was Deaf, required his students to attend a certain number of events with the local Deaf club and write about their experience, especially as the proverbial “fish out of water.”

Rachael immersed herself in those events, whether it was bowling, games of “fingo”, or simply enjoying each other’s company sharing a few appetizers as friends. More than anything else, she learned about deaf culture and what it meant to be a part of that community.

“The heart of their language is so rich. It was beautiful to be able to go to those, and see all these conversations going on around me, 50 or 60 people together, all ages. There were Deaf children who signed with other Deaf children, and hearing children who signed with their parents, and I had to rely on my hands and the patience of the person you were talking to. It was very enriching to be involved in that and to actively experience it.”

As she became more involved, Rachael realized there might be a future for her in interpreting. While still a student at Daytona State, she was offered a job with the Volusia County school system, but even then, Rachael still wanted to pursue a career in nursing. She moved to Jacksonville after graduating and did some work as a freelance interpreter but was having trouble getting the type of nursing position she wanted. Fate intervened when she got a call from home in 2012 informing her that Sonny had passed away. She was asked if she would like to return to the agency, not just as an interpreter, but as a co-owner. It wasn’t a tough decision.

Of course, the person she would be closely working with was Debbie, who at that point was more of an acquaintance than a friend.

“We didn’t know each other that well yet, but we had the same goal,” said Debbie, who had initially met Sonny when he was interpreting for another student in one of her EMS classes at Daytona State.

“We wanted to keep the business going for the deaf community.

We want to make sure they have the same opportunities everyone is entitled to, with the same level of communication.”

It’s been eight years since they inherited the business and it’s still going strong thanks to their partnership, friendship, and a shared commitment to help a segment of the population that has too often been overlooked. Both Rachael and Debbie emphasize how important it is for those who are Deaf or hearing-impaired to be able to take control of their lives and be an active part of their community.

Rachael also has a more personal connection to those who sometimes need a little more assistance in their day-to-day lives.

She has a five-year old daughter who was born blind and feels her work with the deaf community has helped prepare her for that. It’s made Rachael even more appreciative for the connections she’s made and the first-hand knowledge that comes from working in a system designed to empower those who have so much to offer when given the opportunity. In her free time, she’s even learning braille so she can keep up with her daughter.

The two women can’t help but feel a little more pride that they’re doing all of this in the same place where they’ve spent virtually their entire lives. “We both went to school here, have family here, and have deep roots,” said Debbie. “People know our name and our reputation, and that we’re committed to them. That means something.”

“I’m proud to own a business in an amazing, developing area,” Rachael said. “I love being a voice in the Deaf community and being able to advocate for them in my hometown.”

Smyrna Yacht Club celebrates 15th year of scholarships awarded to students The Club’s community support includes fundraising efforts that resulted in the establishment of the Smyrna Yacht Club Scholarship Fund, which was launched in late 2005, with the Daytona State College Foundation. Over the past 15 years, the fund has granted more than $71,000 in financial support for students attending Daytona State College.

“We’re simply honored to support students attending Daytona State College,” said Hilary Reilly, who chairs the SYC Scholarship Committee. “Daytona State is a gem in our community with a reputation for excellence and is a leader in our county and region in economic development. We are proud to join Daytona State as a partner in education.”

In 2020, the SYC fund saw an increase of 60% over their strongest year, 2019, and almost four times as much as in any prior year.

Established in 1928, the Smyrna Yacht Club, a once fledgling cadre of wealthy sportsmen spending their leisure time hunting, fishing and cruising on luxurious yachts along New Smyrna Beach’s idyllic Indian River, has not only grown its membership and expanded its program of activities, it has become known for its generous support of its community.

“Daytona State College is very fortunate to have friends like the members of Smyrna Yacht Club who understand and appreciate the value of education,” said Tim Norton, Vice President for Advancement and Executive Director of the DSC Foundation.

“In days of uncertainty like we’ve faced in 2020, the dependable, generous support of those who believe in our mission is critical and much appreciated.”

Outriggers Tiki Bar & Grille raises nearly $20,000 for culinary management students Occupying one of the most spectacular Indian River waterfront locations in New Smyrna Beach, Outriggers Tiki Bar & Grille has it all: an imaginative menu focused on Florida Coastal Cuisine comprised of locally caught fresh seafood and regionally sourced ingredients plus an extensive craft cocktail menu. Add all of this to the grand vistas of the river and service that exceeds expectations, and you have one of the finest venues in all of Volusia County.

Now, the owners and management team at Outriggers have extended their hospitality by creating a pathway for those interested in the culinary/restaurant management profession to secure their future with a degree from Daytona State College’s Mori Hosseini College of Hospitality and Culinary Management.

The newly established Outriggers Culinary Scholarship Fund will provide financial support for Outriggers staff and other students interested in pursuing a career in the culinary profession and hospitality management.

Early last Fall, Outriggers Co-owner Michael Manuel, and General Manager Jim Rushing (DSC ’04), together with Executive Chef Erik Amalfitano, began dreaming about how to expand their reach and involvement in the community. They landed on the idea of a curated five-course wine dinner and charity auction raising funds for DSC. About the same time along came David Sacks, 3rd generation owner of Daytona-based Food Supply, Inc. and purveyor of fine foods to Outriggers and restaurants throughout the region.

A member of the Board of Directors of the DSC Foundation, Sacks talked to Rushing about a scholarship that had been established in his parents’ honor, the Leonard and Evelyn Sacks Scholarship.

And, with the first two wine dinners – held in September and October and promoted in partnership with Foley Family Wines – Outriggers had far exceeded their own expectations raising $9,500.

“David’s idea and our team’s execution resulted in three highly successful dinners that generated excitement and generosity that is beyond our wildest expectations,” said Rushing.

Now, having completed a third extremely successful wine dinner and auction on November 19, Sacks suggested to Rushing and Manuel that Outriggers consider establishing its own named scholarship with the $10,000 proceeds.

“Jim’s idea, together with Chef Erik’s exquisite menu and our wine partner, Foley Family Wines, came together in just the right way at a moment when people were hungry for connection,” said Manuel. “We plan to continue these events in 2021 in hopes of growing our newly established scholarship as we support students attending Daytona State College.”

Volusia County Women Who Care give generously to Center for Women & Men Founded only three years ago, Volusia County Women Who Care an alliance of more than 100 women impacting their community through streamlining fundraising for non-profit agencies – has given $18,900 to the DSC Foundation in support of the College’s Center for Women & Men. “Daytona State College and its Center for Women and Men are doing the real work of providing support via mentoring, life skills instruction, scholarship support and much, much more,” said Teresa Smith, Founder of VCWWC. “The difference the Center is making goes well beyond the DSC campuses, extending to the communities where we live, work and play.”
