T

he beginning of a new academic year always brings a sense of anticipation and heightened levels of excitement to a college campus. This fall, those feelings were even stronger as we welcomed students back to a fully operational campus for the first time in more than a year. The re-opening process has been one of caution and incremental steps to reach the point we have, and though we’re still managing our way through the pandemic, the protocols we’ve followed have proven effective and kept the college community safe for more than a year and a half now.

As we look ahead, the College is in the midst of a transformation unlike anything we’ve seen in the past. Construction has been moving along on the new residence hall and we remain on schedule to open for full occupancy in the fall of 2022. Watching this four-story building rise from the ground has been amazing, especially with the knowledge that this will be a new focal point for the College.

For some, having a place to live and study on campus within a short walking distance of classrooms and other facilities is the deciding factor in where they attend school. The offer of affordable on-site housing, along with robust campus life programs, represent new avenues of attracting and retaining those students, while enhancing our mission of providing a College education to everyone, no matter their personal circumstances.

I’m also pleased to announce Daytona State is privileged to host an historic work of art that honors the life of educator, founder of Bethune-Cookman University, civil rights pioneer, and former Daytona Beach resident Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. The marble statue of Dr. Bethune was sculpted in Italy and will have a permanent home in Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C., but is now on display at DSC’s News-Journal Center.

Much of what we have today at Daytona State is through the efforts of Dr. Bethune, whose connections and friendship with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt helped secure land from the federal government which would later become our main campus. Her passion for education is a legacy we inherited and that we strive to uphold every day. I’m reminded of that again as I read the stories in this magazine which reflect the excellence of our students, faculty, and alumni, and I hope you feel the same pride I do in being a member of the Daytona State College family.

In this issue you will read about Carol and Bob Allen who came to Daytona Beach in 1990 when Bob became President & CEO of Consolidated Tomoka, now well-known to us as CTO Realty Growth, Inc. Mr. and Mrs. Allen, with careful planning, hard work, and a giving spirit, have continued that generosity by investing in Daytona State College and students preparing for careers in nursing establishing the Bob and Carol Allen School of Nursing. Ryanne Gouveia Selected as 2021 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar Daytona State College student Ryanne Gouveia was one of only 207 Phi Theta Kappa members nationwide who were awarded the prestigious 2021 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship.

The scholarship program is designed to help new PTK members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs.

Award winners receive a $1,000 scholarship and are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in PTK Society programs. Selections are based on scholastic achievement, community service, and leadership potential, and more than 900 applications were received for the award this year.

“Research shows that Phi Theta Kappa members are four times more likely to complete a college degree than their peers,” said Dr. Monica Marlowe, Executive Director of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. “The Leaders of Promise Scholarships recognize students for what they have achieved already and assure that financial need isn’t an obstacle to achieving their academic goals.”

Ryanne currently serves as DSC’s Phi Theta Kappa Mu Rho Chapter Vice President for Communications in addition to her role as Vice President of the Student Government Association.

During the 2020-21 academic year, she developed the Mu Rho Chapter’s Honors in Action project, titled SPLASH (Stop Pollution Locally and Save H20), which encourages citizens and visitors to protect our local habitats. She is currently working with the PTK board to finalize a new project that will assist the homeless in Volusia County.

After obtaining her degree from Daytona State, Ryanne, who is a member of the Quanta-Honors College, is planning to attend Stetson University with a long-term goal of living in Japan as an English teacher.

“Ryanne has been part of three student clubs, an officer for two, and in just one year, moved up to higher leadership while facing the adversity of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Jennifer Thomas, DSC Student Activities Specialist.

Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders. The Society is made up of more than 3.5 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in 10 nations, with approximately 240,000 active members in the nation’s colleges.

Daytona State Ranked No. 6 on List of Florida’s Best Cosmetology Schools In an August ranking of the top cosmetology programs in Florida, Best Value Schools has placed Daytona State College No. 6 on its top-20 list based on a set of criteria that includes cost, class size and graduation rate.

Daytona State was one of six state colleges to make the top20 with technical colleges making up the remainder of the list.

DSC had the lowest tuition among those 20 programs ($3,290 in-state), which also ranked well below the national average, with the cost of many schools rising to more than $10,000. Daytona State was also noted for its hybrid course options, as well as offering day and evening classes. Classes start each spring and fall, and students are able to complete the program in as little as 11 months.

“When you ask our students why they chose cosmetology at Daytona State, the first answer is the cost of the program,” said Dee Gay, Chair of DSC’s Cosmetology/Barbering Department.

“Although the cost of our program is considerably lower when compared to private institutions, the education and training received here is higher due to dedicated faculty and a curriculum that goes above what is required.”

The cosmetology curriculum incorporates the industry’s most advanced training and educational systems. Students learn state of the art techniques for cutting, styling, creative hair coloring, skin care treatment and much more. Specialized classroom activities include intensive studies of cosmetology law, ethics, cosmetic chemistry, hair styling, manicure/pedicure, salon management and other information related to the occupation.

Students use hair mannequins to perform initial exercises, and a full-service on-campus salon also allows students to gain further hands-on experience with real clients. The College has additional agreements with other corporate and private salons that offer employment opportunities for every student upon graduation.

Florida’s First Chapter of FAME Officially Launches at Daytona State College Daytona State College has officially launched Florida’s first chapter of the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME). It is a collaborative effort between DSC and local manufacturers designed to match students in the AS Engineering Technology program with job opportunities in the community.

A group of students who make up the first cohort were paired with sponsoring employers at a “Signing Day” ceremony at the Advanced Technology College, which kicked off three days of training and orientation. Students attend college two days a week and work three at their sponsoring company with at least 24 paid hours per week on the job.

Braun • Hudson Technologies • Boston Whaler • Pentair • Dougherty Manufacturing • SCCY Firearms • Dynamic Engineering Innovations • Sparton • Everglades Boats “This inaugural cohort of our FAME program is the culmination of several months of work with key stakeholders,” said Dante Leon, Associate Vice President of the DSC College of Business, Engineering and Technology. “The local companies that formed the FAME chapter, the Volusia Manufacturers Association and

Volusia County Schools were instrumental in getting this program launched. We are very excited to be part of this initiative that will create a pipeline of highly trained technicians.”

The signature purpose of FAME is to implement work-based learning education that will create a pipeline of the most highly skilled new workers. It currently has 36 chapters in 14 states, nearly all of them in conjunction with college associate degree programs.

Daytona State is using its AS degree in Engineering Technology, Mechatronics specialization, as the academic home of the FAME program. Industry experts provided input into course selection and sequencing to customize this degree for the workplace.

The curriculum focuses on professional behavior and lean manufacturing principles following the Toyota model of the original FAME chapters. Graduates will earn their AS degree in two years with approximately 1,800 hours of paid on-the-job training with their sponsoring company.

Students finishing the FAME program are well-grounded in both their technical and professional skills, have relevant work experience in their field and often finish with little or no student debt. Additionally, the program at Daytona State has an aligned articulation to the BS in Engineering Technology offered at DSC and other colleges and universities in Florida, providing access to continued career, personal and professional growth.

THE PRIDE OF FLORIDA Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was one of the greatest Floridians in history, and it is a privilege for our entire community to celebrate her life and achievements with her statue on temporary display at DSC’s News-Journal Center.

The statue, unveiled on October 11, 2021, will be in Daytona Beach for two months before being relocated to the U.S. Capitol for permanent display in the Statuary Hall State Collection.

Mary McLeod Bethune was born on a farm in South Carolina in 1875, the fifteenth child of former slaves.

She rose from those humble beginnings to become a world-renowned educator, founder of Bethune-Cookman University, civil rights and human rights leader, and advisor to five U.S. presidents.

The statue is replete of symbolism and history as master sculptor Nilda Comas created this 11-foot-tall, 3-ton statue in Pietrasanta, Tuscany, Italy, using marble from the same quarry Michelangelo used to create his statues of David, the Pieta, and Moses. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune will be the first African American, male or female, to represent a state, as well as the first statue in the U.S. Capitol dressed in academic regalia cap-and-gown. The inscription at the base of the pedestal reads, “Invest in the human soul.

Who knows, it may be a diamond in the rough.”

The black rose in Dr. Bethune’s left hand symbolizes diversity and acceptance of individuality. Dr. Bethune, following a visit to a European garden in 1927 – where she first saw a black rose, started referring to her students as black roses whom she sought to inspire, among other things, as peacemakers.

Though her ties to Daytona State are not as well-known, the foundation of today’s Daytona State were laid, in part, by Dr. Bethune. The College’s roots can be traced to the Volusia County Vocational School, which provided training for trade professions and, later, industrial jobs during World War II. When the war ended, a plan emerged to expand the vocational school into a comprehensive junior college, but a campaign to acquire property from the federal government was met with roadblocks.

It was a frustrating situation for Mary Karl, the school’s director, but she knew exactly whom to approach for help: her friend and colleague, Mary McLeod Bethune. Already a well-known civic leader, and a close friend of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Dr. Bethune accompanied Mary Karl to Washington to personally speak on her behalf. The story has been told that while the three women were having tea at the White House, a deal was struck, and 29 acres of land, along with 55 buildings owned by the federal government were transferred to the Volusia County School Board.

A few years later, that piece of property was developed into Daytona Beach Junior College, and though the name has since changed, our campus is still at that same physical location, continuing to fulfill the vision of pioneering educators such as Dr. Bethune.

Nancy Lohman, Volusia County businesswoman and philanthropist, has tirelessly led the effort resulting in the creation of, funding for and eventual permanent placement inside the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall. “The statue of Dr. Bethune is not only stunning and beautiful, but also symbolic of her work as a trailblazer for civil rights and women’s rights,” said Lohman. “We are honored and proud to experience living history with the statue here in Daytona Beach before it travels on to its permanent home.”

Men’s Soccer

The DSC women’s soccer team had five early season cancellations, but took a 4-5 record into the Region VIII finals.

The Falcons were averaging more than five goals per game, a figure that would stand as a new school record.

Women’s Cross Country

The DSC men’s soccer team has been ranked in the NJCAA Division I top-10 the entire season, seeking a second straight trip to the national tournament. The Falcons are 11-1-1 at press time and one of the highest scoring teams in the country with 3.64 goals per game. They recently won the Region VIII championship and head to the District Championship game early November.

Men’s Cross Country

In cross country, the Falcons have had a historic season with both the women and men in the top five of the NJCAA rankings for the first time. Between them, the two squads collected a total of eight FCSAA Region VIII Runners of the Week. At Regionals, the men finished at the top and the women took second. The Falcons also had the top finishers in both the men’s and women’s races.

Heading into the state tournament, the Falcons owned a 12-6 regular season record and have been a top-20 team since the season began.

Along the way they’ve beaten two other nationally ranked opponents and had five different players earn FCSAA Region VIII Player of the Week awards.

Daytona State College welcomed four new head coaches to the athletic department this year, though one of them is a familiar face for Falcon fans. New to the staff for the 2021-22 academic year are Tron Griffin (women’s basketball), Joey Cantens (men’s basketball), and Hope Clark (women’s soccer). Daytona State is also pleased to announce the promotion of Laura Booker-Anderson to volleyball head coach after previously serving as interim coach in the spring of 2021 and assistant coach from 2013-20.

Tron Griffin - Women’s Basketball College coaching veteran Tron Griffin joined Daytona State as women’s basketball coach after serving as Athletic Director at Atlantic High School in Port Orange during the 2020-21 academic year. He previously served as head coach at Truett McConnell University in Georgia for one year and guided the Bears to the best season in school history in 2017.

Hope Clark - Women’s Soccer In women’s soccer, Hope Clark brings 20 years of coaching experience to Daytona State, including 12 as a head coach at the college level. She joined the Falcons from Young Harris College in Georgia where she spent two years as Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance/Senior Woman Administrator.

Griffin’s career began as an assistant with stops at Bethune-Cookman University and Florida State College at Jacksonville. He moved to Prairie View A&M University in 2012, initially as assistant coach and later as associate head coach.

He helped lead them to two conference championship wins with NCAA Tournament bids in 2013 and ’14.

Prior to joining the administrative staff at Young Harris, Clark was head coach at Georgia College and State University from 2010-18, compiling a 78-73-16 record. She compiled five 10-win seasons for the Bobcats, is the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories, and guided them to their only two Peach Belt Conference Championship Games.

In 2016, Griffin was named head coach at Truett McConnell University, an NAIA school in Cleveland, Georgia, and set new program standards for most overall wins (15) and conference wins (11). He eventually moved back to Florida where he spent two years at Stetson University, aiding the Hatters in their run to the WNIT in 2019.

Clark’s first head coaching job came at Auburn UniversityMontgomery where she led the Senators to a 35-22-4 mark from 2007-09, including a 15-5-2 record and the second round of the NAIA National Tournament in her final season.

As a collegiate athlete, Griffin competed for Bethune-Cookman in football from 2002-06, helping lead the Wildcats to a MEAC Championship in 2002 and the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs in 2002 and ’03. He was also a member of the men’s basketball team during the 2003-04 season.

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Griffin completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Educational Studies in 2006 at Bethune-Cookman and a Master of Science in Management and Leadership at Western

Originally from Louisiana, Clark was an all-region goalkeeper at Virginia Tech and the Hokies’ MVP as a sophomore in 1995 following a season in which she set the Atlantic-10 Conference single-season record for saves with 179. She still holds Virginia Tech records for saves in a season and career (341).

Clark earned her bachelor’s degree in human nutrition foods and exercise from Virginia Tech and her master’s degree in health and fitness management from American University.

Joey Cantens - Men’s Basketball New men’s basketball coach Joey Cantens brings a wealth of pro, college and international experience to the Falcons, including the last three years as assistant coach at Florida Gulf Coast University.

He also spent three years as FGCU’s director of basketball operations from 2011-14, including its historic run through the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

That year saw FGCU, with its “Dunk City” moniker, win the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament in only its second season of eligibility and become the first No. 15 seed to reach the Sweet Sixteen. One year later, Cantens helped the Eagles win their first ever regular season ASUN title in 2014. He also had coaching stints at the University of Southern California and NCAA Division II powerhouse Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Cantens’ international experience extends to Europe and the Caribbean, where he coached professionally in Germany and with the Dominican Republic National Team. He also spent time with the San Antonio Spurs as a guest coach for their 2018 Summer League Team.

A native Floridian, Cantens began his college playing career at Florida International University in 2005. After transferring to Eckerd College as a sophomore, he helped the Tritons twice reach the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament.

Cantens earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Management from Eckerd in 2009, and his Master of Science in Sports Management from Florida State University in 2011.

Laura Booker-Anderson - Women’s Volleyball Daytona State College officially named Laura Booker-Anderson its new volleyball coach last April after the former DSC assistant guided the Falcons to a 15-8 record as interim coach last spring. She has been with the program since its inception in 2013, helping them make six appearances in the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Tournament.

Booker-Anderson led the Falcons to a runner-up finish in the Mid-Florida Conference and a spot in the regional tournament during the COVID-delayed spring season. The Falcons, who had just one returning starter from 2019, were ranked as high as No. 2 in the region and No. 6 in the nation.

Booker-Anderson graduated from Indiana Tech in 2009 following an outstanding four-year career as a setter. She was a three-time NAIA Academic All-American (2006-08), a First Team All-Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference selection (2008), and a four-time All-Conference/ All-National Champion of Character (2005-2008).

She was selected as Indiana Tech’s MVP as a senior in 2008 and was honored as Indiana Tech’s Hyashi Student-Athlete of the Year when she led the Warriors to a 33-5 record, the WHAC championship and the team’s first NAIA National Tournament appearance.

In addition to being a team captain at Indiana Tech, Booker-Anderson recorded a 3.99 GPA and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Therapy. In 2016, she completed her Master of Coaching and Athletic Administration degree with a 4.0 GPA from Concordia University Irvine.

DR. SHANA DEYO: TRAVELING THE ROAD, FINDING HER PATH “Everyday is a Winding Road,” the 1996 hit by Sheryl Crow, is Professor Shana Deyo’s life story in a nutshell.

An interesting and intriguing mix of overlapping experiences led Deyo to Daytona State College, where, in 2008, she helped launch the Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) in Supervision and Management program.

Whether teaching students or working alongside faculty in her various roles outside the classroom, she enjoys every day knowing she found her true calling. “I’ve wanted to teach since I was a little girl,” said Dr. Deyo. “Why I didn’t go straight into teaching I don’t know, but I tell my students, we don’t always follow one path.”

Even when Shana decided to pursue a position at Daytona State more than 13 years ago, it didn’t play out as initially anticipated.

Applying to teach speech – a position that had been filled just prior to her application reaching the College – Deyo’s application made its way to the College of Business, and from there the road was a bit straighter and more certain. With a need for someone to teach business writing, and with experience as an instructor for that exact course, she began her career at Daytona State, where she also taught business law.

“Sometimes we have to deviate to figure out what it is we really want to do.”

Daytona Beach, a long way down the road from Dothan

Dothan, Alabama, Deyo’s hometown, is a long way from Daytona Beach. However, it is not so far from Tallahassee Community College and Florida State University where she originally studied for a career in medicine. She did well, but there was no real “connection” to the potential professions. Moving on in hopes of preserving science credits already completed, she changed majors to speech pathology. That didn’t provide the spark she was looking for either.

So, rather than continuing on a science degree program that wasn’t the right fit, Shana changed her major again studying marketing and securing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree in 2000. With that degree in hand, and a desire to continue her academic pursuits, she began exploring the legal profession as a career option.

Working full-time as a law clerk in Dothan and driving two hours each way as a part-time law student resulted in completion of a law degree in three years at Faulkner University in Montgomery, AL.

Most importantly, near the end of her law school pursuit she found her passion: teaching. That would eventually lead her down the road to Daytona Beach.

Tapped to Lead, Born to Teach

With her law degree in hand and having passed the Bar exam while doing some teaching, Deyo was named Director of Planning and Research with the additional responsibilities as the College’s legal advisor at Wallace Community College in Dothan. “I learned so much about how a college works in a way that I would never have been able to if I didn’t have that experience,” she said of her time in administration. “But I love teaching, being in the classroom and being with students. I couldn’t give that up.”

Continuing on as an administrator, she continued teaching at Wallace and two additional schools. And she enrolled in a master’s degree program in corporate and public communication, which she completed in 2007, in hopes of landing a full-time teaching position in that field.

“I knew the door would open, it was just when and where, and whether I was ready to go. DSC was the right fit, big enough to really grow, with an opportunity to teach baccalaureate classes.

I couldn’t have done that at any of the other institutions.”

One Constant: Adjustment

Shana’s career at Daytona State has continued her pursuit of change – an obvious hallmark of her life – even as her experiences have prepared her to teach non-traditional students and classes offered in online or hybrid formats.

On her curriculum vitae are many professional accolades, but what gives her the most pride is the B.A.S. program. She’s seen it grow from three faculty members when she arrived, to eight; “a great team to work with” she says. “[The Daytona State] program is truly applied, not just theory based.

When students graduate from here, they’re actually prepared to do something and that excites me. I know students are learning skills that will make them better managers and leaders.”

Beyond the classroom and a schedule heavy in activities on campus – Faculty Senate, Planning Council, LEAD Academy and more – she has also represented Daytona State College by presenting at regional, state, and national conferences.

“Being at Daytona State isn’t just a chance to teach and watch students grow, it is a chance to teach and lead co-workers. It’s kept me excited, keeps things fresh, and I’m able to meet new people and network. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have had those opportunities in other places.”

‘GENTLE, HUMBLE, GENEROUS’ ALLENS’ GIFT NAMES SCHOOL OF NURSING You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you. – John Bunyan Daytona State College benefactors Bob and Carol Allen’s most recent gift is just the latest in a series of major gifts demonstrating that the Allens truly know how to live.

In recognition of a $1,000,000 gift supporting students preparing for careers in nursing, the College’s District Board of Trustees, upon the recommendation of the Foundation Board of Directors, has named the Bob and Carol Allen School of Nursing at Daytona State.

Following a November 2018 visit with now retired Director of Development, Sue Durgy, and Dr. Amy Szoka, Chair of the School of Nursing, the Allens began making gifts to provide scholarship support for students long into the future through both endowed and immediately available funds.

Their first gift to the Daytona State College Foundation created an endowment for students preparing for careers as Registered Nurses. Since then, the Allens have made gifts totaling more than $1.8 million, including scholarship funds for paramedics, HVAC/ industrial technologists, and nurse assistants.

With a lifetime of personal experiences, infused with a significant dose of formal education, the Allens recognized the value such investments would provide in the lives of students, many of whom might otherwise not be able to afford a college education, and they took action.

“Our experience is that Dr. Szoka and her team of nurse educators do a wonderful job of preparing nurses who really care about their patients. Both Carol and I have seen this up close and personal as we have been the beneficiaries of their care,” said Bob. “Our gratitude led us to the decision to invest in the future of the DSC nursing program, and we are grateful for Daytona State College as a leader in education for this place we love to call home.”

The realization of Bob’s vision for the now developed north and south corridor west of Williamson Boulevard in Daytona Beach is a tribute worthy of note for Volusia County and the region.

Carol, a graduate of Hood College and Wake Forest University Law School, where she earned her JD after the age of 40 and raising their family, practiced and taught civil law – including on the DSC campus for the University of Central Florida.

Bob, a native Tennessean, and Carol, who claims both Pennsylvania and Michigan as homes, met on a blind date while he was attending the United States Naval Academy and she was a student at Hood. From there, Bob went on to earn an MBA from Harvard University.

“To say that we are thrilled that Bob and Carol would so value our work that they would continue to make such generous investments speaks for itself,” said Dr. Szoka. “Our students, faculty and staff are overjoyed by this gift that provides for immediate program support and a generous endowment that will produce support in perpetuity.”

The naming of the Bob and Carol Allen School of Nursing is the capstone of recent achievements and is sure to propel Daytona State College forward as it works to provide for the healthcare needs of the region by producing high quality graduates throughout its College of Health and Public Services.

THE BOB AND CAROL ALLEN

The Bob and Carol Allen School of Nursing, which includes the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, Associate of Science degree in Nursing (ADN) program with a Transition into Professional Nursing option, Practical Nursing program (PN), and Nursing Assistant program, is a unit within the College of Health and Public Services. The Allen School of Nursing has strong support from the College as well as the surrounding community.

Prior to the existence of the College, the community committed itself to a local occupational education facility named after its founder, Mary Karl. The Mary Karl DBJC Practical Nursing students, Mrs. Russell and Mrs. Massengill.

Vocational School of Practical Nursing, the second of its kind in Florida, established a program in October 1950 under a $2,000 grant from the Kellogg Foundation. The Mary Karl Vocational School became a division of Daytona Beach Junior College in 1957. The Daytona Beach Community College Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program was established in 1961 under another grant from the Kellogg Foundation.

In 1965, Daytona Beach Junior College merged with Volusia County Community College, a college that served the region’s black students. VCCC’s Practical Nursing program consolidated with the Practical Nursing program at DBJC, effectively ending segregated programs.

The Transition into Professional Nursing program admitted the first thirty students in January of 1986. The program design allowed Florida-licensed practical nurses to bridge and obtain an associate degree in nursing. The program evolved in 1993 to include paramedics, and again in 2002 to include registered respiratory therapists (RRT). This unique bridge program allowed paramedics and RRTs licensed in Florida to bridge and obtain an associate degree in nursing. The ADN program received initial program accreditation from the ACEN in January 1985 and has maintained full accreditation since that time.

the community to obtain a baccalaureate degree once licensure is achieved. The RN to BSN program is completely online and has earned national recognition as a top program from U.S. News & World Report.

Looking towards the future, the region is facing a shortage of healthcare workers.

To meet current and projected needs, DSC’s nursing program has expanded across the service district. The Flagler/ Palm Coast Campus expanded significantly with state-of-the-art facility renovations that increased capacity from 30 seats to 120. New construction at the Deltona Campus will provide 80 additional seats for the nursing program to expand there as well, and construction is projected to begin in 2022.

DAYTONA STATE OPENS NURSING CENTER ON FLAGLER/PALM COAST CAMPUS Daytona State celebrated another milestone in August with the opening of a new nursing center on the Flagler/Palm Coast Campus. The ribbon-cutting event was the culmination of a process that began in 2019 when funding was received from the state legislature that would allow for renovations of the Alan Smolen Center along with the expansion of the nursing program at Flagler/Palm Coast.

The approximately $4.25 million project was completed by DLR Group and Charles Perry Partners, Inc., and involved a complete rebuild of the interior, deck, and roof of the Alan Smolen Center. It now provides space for 120 students who are now able to complete the entire associate degree in nursing at the Flagler/Palm Coast Campus, which is four times the previous capacity. The additional capacity also helps to address the region’s critical need for additional nurses.

The new construction and remodeling gives the College more than 16,000 square feet of usable space, and includes three upgraded classrooms, four nursing suites with control rooms for monitoring, and offices for additional faculty members. The improvements enhance the program for local high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in nursing.

“The timing couldn’t be better either,” said Dr. Tom LoBasso, Daytona State President. “AdventHealth announced plans to build a 100-bed hospital just a few minutes away off Palm Coast Parkway that is expected to open in late 2022, and future plans also call for a 30,000-square foot medical office building on the same site. The hospital is expected to provide 400 new jobs, and that figure could grow to as many as 700. The nurses and healthcare professionals who fill those positions must receive the highest level of training to care for their patients, and what better place to do that, than Daytona State College?”

Since 1979, when classes were held at the new Palm Harbor Shopping Center, Daytona State College has maintained an active presence in Flagler County. The College moved to its current location three years later with financial assistance and land from the ITT Community Development Corporation and has been growing along with the city of Palm Coast ever since. Over the last decade, DSC’s Flagler/Palm Coast Campus has served on average approximately 2,250 students per year.

With last year’s event cancelled by the pandemic, everyone was eager to participate in Daytona State’s Homecoming 2021. Spread out over three days, the celebration was well received and attended by students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the community. Aside from a brief afternoon rain, nothing could stop the games, activities, 5K walk/run, food, and athletic events.

And in a new addition to the festivities, faculty and staff showed off the best of what DSC has to offer our students with Discovery Day. Homecoming is always a special time for the College, and we are certainly looking forward to expanding the event next year when the new student residence hall opens.

Growing up in Philadelphia during the United States crack epidemic of the early 90’s, Chris Baker wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his life yet, but one thing he did know: he didn’t want to end up like so many other kids in his neighborhood did.

“I saw the drugs, the prostitution and all those types of things happening,” Chris said. “I was only 10, but I was still able to see what happened to the 18 and 19-year-olds doing that. They were dead or in jail. I knew I wasn’t going to make that mistake.”

That was nearly 30 years ago, and since then, young Chris Baker has grown into Lieutenant Chris Baker, a 2002 graduate of Daytona State’s Charles M. Curb School of Emergency Services, and member of the Seminole County Fire Department. Whether fighting fires, responding to medical emergencies, or serving as a role model for young people from a similar background, Chris kept that long-ago promise he made to himself and found his calling as a first responder.

It was 1994 when Chris and his family traded their West Philly neighborhood for central Florida. Like many teenage boys, his life revolved around sports and during his time at DeLand High School, Chris was a four-sport athlete in football, weightlifting, wrestling, and track. He mostly breezed through class but had no real plan for after graduation, nor did he have any idea what to expect from life.

“The whole time I was in high school, the culture was play sports and be an athlete,” Chris said. “But they don’t hammer into you the unlikelihood of becoming a professional athlete, or even what happens when you don’t become a Division I college athlete.”

The first six months after high school graduation were a reality check for Chris, who bounced from one odd job to the next which included delivering telephone books and working at a local barbecue. Realizing he needed to do something more with his life before it was too late, he didn’t have far to look for inspiration.

His older brother, Shane, had already gone through the fire fighter program at Daytona State and joined the Seminole County Fire Department, providing a road map for the future if Chris wanted to follow it.

In 2002, Chris made the decision to enroll at Daytona State, putting himself on the path to where he is today. Visiting campus for the first time, he met with Teresa Campbell, Senior Staff Assistant in the Curb School of Emergency Services, who helped guide him through the entire process, from completing financial aid forms to obtaining the proper personal protection equipment (PPE). Even now, 20 years later, Chris has never forgotten what she did for him, and how much it meant to have someone looking out for him as he took his first steps into a new world.

“She understood that, at the time, not many minorities went through fire standards training. I was one of the very few in a class of 30, so it was a bit of a culture shock. She’d always check on me and see how I was doing, and I was thankful for that. It inspired me and motivated me to be a better person.”

It took just one semester to finish the program before Chris passed the state certification requirements. After completing his EMT training, a requirement for all fire fighters, he had multiple job offers but his familiarity with the Seminole County Fire Department made it an easy decision. He was hired in 2003 and began his career at Station 13 in Altamonte Springs, the busiest in the county, where he spent 10 years before his promotion to lieutenant.

Chris is now at his third different station and his career is still on an upward trajectory. He currently serves on shift as the department’s Incident Command Technician, a position that serves as a training ground for future battalion chiefs. In that role, he has taken initial command of several significant alarms, and done so in such a manner that battalion chiefs and assistant chiefs often keep him in command even after their arrival.

Chris also serves as chair of the county-sponsored diversity counsel, is a member of the fire department’s recruiting program, is heavily involved in the candidate physical abilities test team, and is a lead instructor on the tactical fitness team. During the second half of 2021 alone, he was honored with the SCFD Employee of the Month Award and recognized separately by the Rotary Club of Lake Mary for his work as a first responder.

“Our Seminole County Fire Department has always recruited quite a number of excellent graduates – such as Lt. Chris Baker – from Daytona State’s School of Emergency Services,” said SCFD Chief Otto Drozd III. “In addition to Lt. Baker’s outstanding service, he has helped our department reach top-notch diverse candidates who may otherwise not necessarily see a career in fire service as an option. Recruitment and diversity go hand-in-hand, and he is committed to helping make the Seminole County Fire Department personnel a reflection of the diverse community we serve.”

Though fires are typically the most dangerous situations, 80 percent of the department’s calls are medical in nature. In either case, each member of the team has an essential function, and their ability to work together at peak efficiency for every single one of those calls can be the difference between life and death.

Equally important to Chris is the ability to give back to the community that supported him when he first embarked on this career path. He remembers as a young man how he saw very few people who looked like him serving as fire fighters, and at first it was a mystery to his friends why he wanted to pursue such a career. But they also saw the positive direction Chris’ life was going, and were soon providing encouragement, and now it’s his turn to do the same for kids who are searching for a future the same way he was.

One moment that stands out for Chris came during an outreach event in which the department installed smoke detectors and put address numbers on houses and mailboxes. It was a relatively simple project, but it made a tremendous impact on the people it was designed to help, including Chris.

“The love we received from that community, seeing the joy and happiness from the kids and families we were serving, was one of my best moments working in the fire department. It becomes more personal when you can sit down and talk with people, or you’re driving through the neighborhoods and the kids know you by name.

They understand we’re here to help, and we can answer questions and build relationships.”

After successfully navigating his own childhood, where his life could have easily gone in the wrong direction, Chris is now making sure the kids he meets today understand the opportunities they have. Through his work as a fire fighter and a youth football coach, he serves as an example of someone who came from a difficult background but became an important member of his community by making the right decisions along the way.

“I had a lot of friends who went left, and I went right, and that’s why I’m here today.”

One of Daytona State’s newest alumni, Terry Throop ‘21 graduated in May with his Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) as a part of the first nursing cohort to entirely complete this program at our Flagler/ Palm Coast campus.

When it comes to the proverbial “real world” that awaits so many other college graduates, he’s already got a master’s level education.

A 10-year military veteran with a wife and a teenage son, Terry served three tours of duty in the Middle East before returning to the United States and deciding to pursue a new career in healthcare.

Growing up in Fenton, Missouri, Terry graduated from high school in 2003 and enrolled at St. Louis Community College. Realizing he wanted to be part of something bigger, he felt a responsibility to serve his country and joined the Army in 2005, trading one form of education for another. The military also provided job security, good benefits, and a chance to see the world, all of which added further appeal to a young man who saw a long career ahead of him in the United States Army.

Terry had the good fortune to be stationed in Hawaii for the first six years of his service, but he spent a total of 27 months in Iraq during two separate deployments between 2007 and 2011, and nine months in Afghanistan during another deployment from 2012-13.

“After the first few years of being in the Army, I was thinking, man this is great and if I can do 20 years I can retire,” Terry said.

“Unfortunately, after my third combat deployment, I was medically retired. My wife’s family lived in Florida, so we moved here, and I was like, now what am I going to do?”

Moving to Florida to near his wife’s family, Throop began looking at the programs being offered at Daytona State’s Flagler/Palm Coast Campus near his home. During his time in the Army, he’d already received basic medical training and enjoyed the limited exposure he had, so he was drawn to nursing, an occupation where he would be able to help those in need.

He didn’t yet know how to go about everything, but he found the College staff extremely welcoming. “I knew I had veteran benefits, but I had no idea how to use them or apply for them. They gave me all the forms, went through everything with me, and once I signed up for classes, they worked with me every semester.”

As a veteran, Terry was able to sign up for classes early and had access to the Veterans Center, which he took full advantage of with its computer lab and quiet study areas. The Academic Support Center was another plus, but the biggest perk for Terry was the location, knowing he could do everything he needed to do for school without leaving Palm Coast.

His wife has been a crucial part of that process too. Fully supportive of Terry’s decision to return to college, she gave him the quiet time at home he needed or helped in more direct ways such as quizzing him on what he learned to prepare him for upcoming exams.

Even though he’s earned his associate degree, Terry doesn’t intend to stop there. He plans on continuing at Daytona State for his Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a program he can complete online while working in the Intensive Care Unit at AdventHealth, Palm Coast, where has a job and tuition reimbursement is part of their employee benefits package.

When he began his nursing education, Terry had no idea how deep the profession truly is but feels like he’s found his niche.

“There are so many different pathways you can follow in nursing, which I’ve learned over the last two years, and I found I really like critical care. That’s why I like working in the ICU. I feel like I can help people there and it’s enjoyable to treat a patient and see the outcome.”

Discipline, protocols/standards of procedure, and critical thinking are all transferrable skills Throop points to as important for his work as a nurse that were honed during his lengthy service in the military.

Terry was quick to credit his instructors at Daytona State, especially Theresa Slicer, Kristine Phillips, and Amy Gagliano.

Slicer provided a strong base in med-surg before Phillips built on that, and Gagliano further set them up for the jobs they’d have as professionals. Ultimately though, Terry believes much of the program comes down to the work you’re willing to put in, and an individual’s level of commitment.

“So much of the program is what you make it, but my peers and my professors are what got me through nursing school. They’re what made this a wonderful experience.”

JUDY HAYDT NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT Judy Haydt, former director of development, has rejoined the Daytona State College Foundation as Executive Director of Advancement.

A graduate of the University of Connecticut with a B.A. in Marketing, Haydt came to the Daytona Beach area to work for Indigo Lakes Golf Club after which she joined NASCAR as marketing specialist. She went on from there to work with International Speedway Corp., then returned to NASCAR and NASCAR Media Group to work in marketing, special events, business affairs and broadcast planning.

Prior to this recent appointment at DSC, Haydt held senior leadership roles in Philanthropy at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where she built sustainable relationships with individuals, corporations, and foundations.

Working directly with the Senior Vice President she also collaborated on many special initiatives such as ERAU’s digital engagement program, launching new philanthropic organizations, and developing gift-in-kind procedures.

According to colleagues at ERAU who were asked about her prior to coming back to DSC: “Judy is a bundle of positive energy and enthusiasm.” “Judy will be a great addition to the Foundation staff because of her diligent care for donors.” “Judy has played a major role in my growth as a professional.”
