D

uring my 18 years at Daytona State College, I have had the opportunity to meet and work with many people who have helped shape the College into the special place we see today. One of those people is Forough Hosseini, who has been a member of the District Board of Trustees for the last 13 years and served as chair on two different occasions. She stepped down from the board last May, and in this issue of the Daytona State College Magazine, you’ll read more about her vision and achievements during her time with the College.

One of my first experiences with Forough was a visit to Tallahassee in 2015. We had put an aggressive schedule together and must have had a dozen appointments that day, but she didn’t miss a beat as we went from one meeting to the next. I remember how fruitful that trip was and realizing this is someone who will follow through and be with us every step of the way.

There are many stories about Forough’s compassion for students and her focus on meeting their personal, social and educational needs. It was that compassion, combined with a strength of purpose, that made her such a strong voice for the College, whether that was in meetings with state legislators or leaders in our local communities. Daytona State could not have had a better friend and her impact will be felt for generations to come.

As I read the stories in this magazine, I am again reminded of that, and I hope that you will be inspired by the students and alumni who are featured here. All of them came to Daytona State to pursue their dreams, and through their engagement with the College, were able to achieve their goals. They came from all walks of life and include an award-winning photojournalist who uses his work to promote social justice; a marine biologist who is working to protect Florida’s waterways; a versatile first responder with a lifelong connection to the College; and a young mother whose life experience and transformation have placed her on the path to helping others like herself.

Again, I would like to recognize Forough for her friendship, leadership and service. Thank you for paving the way for even more students to achieve remarkable things through Daytona State College.

ther than a short time away from the state studying and receiving my law degree, I’ve lived and worked right here in Volusia County. My upbringing, education, values and, to a great degree, work ethic, have been shaped by the people around me. They have chosen to invest where we live and work making possible all the benefits of a thriving community.

Just last month, the Daytona State College Foundation hosted its 27th annual Gala – A Night of Inspiration: Dream, Succeed, Celebrate – where more than $148,000 was raised for student scholarships.

Encouraging us to pursue our own dreams – no matter our age – were three of Daytona State College’s finest students: Makenna Gottschalk, Serena Huff and Stephen Miksits. Their stories, remarkable and inspiring, highlight their determination to achieve their dreams. Makenna, Serena and Stephen conveyed their deep appreciation for the scholarship support they receive as they pursue their degrees in biology, nursing and information technology/cybersecurity. And, they bolstered my personal belief that the future is bright because, at least in part, Daytona State College is educating the next generation of community leaders.

At the same event, we feted one of our community’s great champions, Forough B. Hosseini. Forough’s leadership and investment in our College and community, her passion for children and families who are less fortunate than most who will read this letter, and her determination to make a difference with her time, talent and treasure are evident throughout Volusia and Flagler counties.

Forough, without a doubt, the achievements of Daytona State College over the past several years would not have been possible without the strong, steady, visionary leadership you have demonstrated. Thank you for all you have done for DSC, our community and our state by way of your leadership of the DSC District Board of Trustees.

A New Pathway for DSC Students and Future Gators With the creation of the new 2+2 articulation agreement between Daytona State College and the University of Florida, DSC students who complete certain requirements are now guaranteed admission into UF’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. The 2+2 agreement with UF came from the idea to provide a pathway for high school students, particularly those involved in programs such as 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA), who have an interest in majoring in agriculture.

Dr. Jennifer Bell, Assistant Chair, Environmental Science Technology, says partnerships such as these are important and help grow the College. “The 2+2

agreement with UF is a ‘game changer’ in that it is the first agreement focused on our STEM students and their careers by assisting their application into a top-ten research university. The coolest part of this agreement is that it focuses on the University of Florida’s roots – it began as an agricultural school!” she remarked.

“Often agricultural students, few in number, feel overlooked and are overwhelmed as they sort through degree requirements and commonality with professors in their fields. Recognizing this need and searching for opportunities to better serve underrepresented student degree paths, DSC took it one step further by requesting

science faculty to review courses within UF’s agricultural program and develop courses within their area of expertise. In doing so, several courses were developed to allow students the opportunity to get a ‘taste’ for agricultural science.”

Interested students are encouraged to speak with their advisor as the benefits are tremendous. A student who is focused on this goal can be assured of a spot at a flagship university – at a much lower cost – by finishing their AA at Daytona State and then transferring to one of 15 different agriculture-based majors at UF.

BS in Information Technology Program Earns ABET Accreditation The Daytona State College Bachelor of Science Information Technology (BSIT) program recently received accreditation from the ABET Computing Accreditation Commission. The evaluation was a comprehensive review of the BSIT program as part of its 2018-19 accreditation cycle, which included a self-study and an on-site visit in the fall of 2018.

“This is an impressive accomplishment and a testament to the quality of work by everyone involved,” said Dr. Tom LoBasso, President of Daytona State College.

“This will only elevate the stature of the program and the quality of students we can attract, as well as employers who will seek out our graduates.”

The BSIT is housed in the College of Business, Engineering and Technology’s School of Engineering Technology. It was originally established in 2010 as the Information Systems concentration of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology, but later became a standalone degree program in the 2014-15 academic year.

“ABET accreditation is the gold standard for engineering and STEM programs,” said Dante Leon, Associate Vice President of the College of Business, Engineering and Technology. “We are one of the few two-year colleges to have two programs accredited under ABET: the BS in Engineering Technology, and now our BS in Information Technology. The ABET visiting team interviewed several departments in our College, from administration, admissions, advising, information technology, math and science, library, and online studies. In all instances they were very impressed with the level of service that we provide.”

DSC Expands Nursing Programs in Deltona and Palm Coast With increasing demand and a critical workforce shortage in nursing and health sciences positions in Volusia and Flagler counties, Daytona State College is poised to help fill the gap for Halifax Health, AdventHealth and Flagler Hospital as they grow to meet the community’s needs.

At the Flagler/Palm Coast Campus, DSC is expanding the presence of the nursing program. The current fall 2019 semester is the first time the associate degree students will have the opportunity to complete the nursing program with all classes held in Palm Coast. Students will be able to continue their education with no interruption as the campus will also provide a seamless transition for the RN to BSN online program. The expansion plan includes the transformation of DSC’s Alan Smolen Center into a state-of-the-art teaching and learning facility for nursing and healthcare programs.

Expansion is also planned for the Deltona Campus with the legislature approving construction funding for a new workforce education facility. This building will house nursing and other health sciences programs that will meet the additional employment needs of Halifax Health and AdventHealth, as well as machining and other trade certificate programs designed to meet West Volusia’s economic development plans. The new facility will serve up to 500 students annually and will replace the aging portable buildings.

TORTUGAS TAKEOVER NIGHT Daytona State College is known for its outstanding NJCAA athletic programs, and Daytona Beach is known for the Daytona Tortugas minor league baseball team.

The Tortugas and Falcons came together on August 7 for a “DSC Takeover Night” at the historic Jackie Robinson ballpark.

Student-athletes, student leaders, faculty, staff and fans “painted the park blue” as a

community outreach effort to showcase the College’s athletics, academic programs, the DSC Foundation and Alumni & Friends.

Hurricane Dorian may have forced a postponement, but it could not completely cancel the Fall Welcome Back events on all of the campuses.

New and returning students were introduced to everything the College has to offer through a fair-like atmosphere that featured games, activities, giveaways, food and more. Whether it was reconnecting with old friends or making new ones, DSC students had plenty of reasons to feel excited about their future.

The educational event featured local human service agencies and vendors, as well as entertainment from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind and other DSC departments and student clubs such as the American Sign Language Club.

Chef Costa Magoulas and DSC’s Hospitality and Culinary Management Program connect with the community The students and faculty of the College of Hospitality and Culinary Management at Daytona State College have been hard at work over the last few months with visitors and culinary demonstrations, as well as racking up recognition and awards.

In June, Costa Magoulas, Dean of the Mori Hosseini College of Hospitality and Culinary Management, hosted the inaugural meeting of the American Culinary Federation’s (ACF) newest chapter called ACF Mid Florida East Coast. Chapter members included chefs from Volusia, Flagler and Brevard counties, and visiting chefs participated in a beer tasting and tour of DSC’s new Hospitality Beverage Science Lab. In August, the ACF held its national conference in Orlando, and 50 chefs and chef educators from across the US came to DSC for a tour of the culinary and beverage science facilities.

Another tour of Café 101 and the culinary kitchen classroom brought 55 junior chefs from Turie T. Small Elementary School and Hope House to participate in cooking demonstrations. The students, eager to learn about creating delicious and nutritious dishes, were joined by President Tom LoBasso and trustee Bob Davis, too.

Additionally, Chef Magoulas and Bob Davis were honored by their peers with Hospitality Legend Awards from the Lodging & Hospitality Association of Volusia County.

Finally, in anticipation of Thanksgiving, Chef Magoulas filmed spots with Volusia Magazine about healthy side dishes and safe food handling during the holidays that will air in November on WDSC-15.

In the accolades department, Chef Magoulas was recognized by the ACF with the “Sharing Culinary Traditions Award” for demonstrating unwavering dedication to the education of future chefs. In 2018, he was named the ACF Chef Educator of the Year and received the ACF President’s Medallion in 2012.

The entrepreneurial spirit thrives at Daytona State College and the Small Business Development Center, thanks in part to an endowment by L. Gale Lemerand, one of the nation’s leading entrepreneurs and philanthropists. Dr. Lemerand helped Dr. Tom LoBasso, President, kick off the 2019-20 Entrepreneurial Speaker Series by awarding two students with the L. Gale Lemerand Entrepreneurial Speaker Series Scholarships. Established in 2007, more than 50 students have earned awards through this scholarship program.

Holly-Noel Monroe is studying Environmental Science and Technology and is pursuing her childhood dream of opening an educational petting zoo. While she plans to start small with livestock, her long-term goals include bringing in more diverse animals, adding food trucks, hosting events and creating an educational garden. She hopes to inspire others to do something they truly love, no matter how “wild and out of the park” it may seem.

Hilton Smith earned his GED through DSC’s Adult Education program and is now taking classes at the Deltona Campus. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and plans to become a nurse and start his own home-care business. He works with numerous members of the homeless community and the elderly, and also started a creative writing club. His own life experiences and passion for helping others continue to push him forward towards his goals.

“When you hear about students such as Holly-Noel and Hilton, it serves as a reminder that there are many different pathways to success, and we’re pleased they’ve chosen to take some of their early steps with us at Daytona State College,” said Dr. LoBasso.

After the scholarships were awarded, Suneera Madhani, CEO and founder of Fattmerchant, spoke to students and members of the community about the experiences that led her to create her own technology company which revolutionized the credit card processing industry.

WISE 10th Anniversary Ten years ago, the DSC Foundation began a new effort to promote and share relaxed, enjoyable lifelong learning opportunities with the senior community. The non-credit program was called Wisdom In Senior Education (WISE), and the title of the first program was “The Road Traveled from DBJC to Daytona State College and its Exciting Future.”

Who knew a decade ago how prophetic that topic would be as both DSC and the WISE program have experienced tremendous growth in that time.

The WISE Program was designed for adults age 50 and up, and some of the topics from that inaugural year included photography, culinary arts, political science, humanities, foreign policy, criminal justice, county government, and the development of Florida after World War II. This year’s schedule includes a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, D-Day, Vedic math, medical marijuana, and personal health.

The educational seminars are offered on a weekly basis during the spring and fall semesters and the entire program is housed under the DSC Foundation, guided by a volunteer 15-member advisory board. There are currently 160 members and the founding father of WISE, Jerry Krueger, is still an active member and board participant.

“Over the last 10 years, Daytona State College has provided a platform for seniors to learn, socialize and engage with the college community,” explained Suzette Cameron, Director of Alumni Relations & Development. “Members of the WISE Program have also started an endowed scholarship fund which focuses on Nursing and Veterans. The wealth of knowledge we have with our membership is incredible and the driving force behind the energy which keeps this program thriving.”

Men’s Soccer The DSC men’s soccer team finished the season with a 12-7 record and reached the second round of the Region 8/FCSAA Tournament. It marks the fourth time in as many years the Falcons have reached double digits in the win column. The Falcons, who were ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation, led Region 8 in scoring with 58 goals in 19 games, had 10 different players score at least three, and three different players accumulate at least 20 points. The top three scorers were freshmen Dujon Martin (9), Santiago Fonseca (7) and Juan Esteban Carmona (6).

Carmona also led the region with 10 assists, giving him a team-high 22 points this season.

Men’s Cross Country Men’s cross country put together a strong fall campaign, highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Seminole State College Invitational and third-place finish at the Disney Cross-Country Classic, before placing third at the FCSAA State Championships in Tallahassee. The Falcons were led by sophomore Jesse Barral at the state championship meet where he placed sixth out of 42 runners in 28:05. Freshman Andy Martinez was the top Falcon at Disney with a time of 27:15.6, which put him 10th out of 123 runners. It was one of his three top-10 finishes for the season. The Falcons ended the year at the NJCAA National Finals in New Mexico on November 9, where head coach Judy Wilson took Martinez, Barral, Tyler Gilbert, Andrew Guillory, Tyler Baker, Adam Mastrobuono and AJ Williams. Guillory, Gilbert and Mastrobuono also competed in the NJCAA Half Marathon Championships on November 23.

Women’s Soccer The DSC women’s soccer team posted a 7-5 record and finished as the Region 8 runner-up. The Falcons were ranked in the NJCAA National Poll the entire season and went into the postseason No. 18. Only an overtime loss to No. 2 Eastern Florida State prevented them from advancing to the district tournament. Sophomore Michelle O’Driscoll led the team with eight goals and 19 points, sophomore Tayla Duffy added seven goals and 17 points, and sophomore Sydney Timmes led the team with four assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Makenna Gottschalk had a 1.56 goals against average and 65 saves, including 27 in the Region 8 Tournament.

Women’s Cross Country The DSC women’s cross country team was runner-up at the FCSAA State Championships in Tallahassee, finishing second to Pasco-Hernando State. The Falcons had three runners in the top-10, led by Hannah Offenback’s fourth-place finish in 20:40.5, which landed her a spot on the FCSAA All-State Team. Trina Spinelli was sixth and Kris Gray was seventh. The Falcons also had a runner-up finish at the Embry-Riddle Invitational in September, and one week later captured the team title at the Seminole State College Invitational where Spinelli, Offenback and Gray were all in the top-five. The Falcons moved on to the NJCAA National Finals in New Mexico on November 9, where head coach Judy Wilson took Spinelli, Gray, Offenback, Jenny Enslin, Moriya Patsch and Sara Mott. Gray, Enslin and Mott also competed in the NJCAA Half Marathon Championships on November 23.

Women’s Volleyball Volleyball wrapped up the season with a 16-10 record, playing 11 matches against NJCAA top-25 teams. The Falcons received an at-large bid to the Region 8/FCSAA State Volleyball Tournament in Jacksonville after tying for second in the Mid-Florida Conference. Sophomore Carla Hernandez led the Falcons with 328 kills, reaching double digits in 19 matches, including 11 in a row to end the season. Sophomore Bruna Avila was the team leader with 232 digs and 911 assists and ranked in the top-10 nationally in assists per set. Sophomore Alexis Thompson added 163 kills and a team-high 77 blocks.

#STEGALL STRONG

The Lady Falcons took to the court September 24 against the College of Central Florida with a mission of not only beating the Patriots, but playing their hearts out for their coach, Laura Stegall. Stegall was diagnosed with stage IIIC ovarian cancer in February 2019.

Assistant Coach Laura Anderson knew she wanted to do something special to recognize Stegall and her long eight-month journey back to health, but she had no idea the event would become so big, and that the outcome would be so grand. More than 400 Falcon fans filled the gym to celebrate Stegall’s recent news that she was NED (No Evidence of Disease) on her first PET scan since finishing her chemo treatments in August. Fans donned Stegall Strong shirts, raised signs in support, and cheered proudly for Stegall and the Falcons as Daytona State College took the floor against conference opponent College of Central Florida.

“I was overcome by emotion when I walked in the gym and saw so many people wearing teal. The last eight months have challenged my mind, body and spirit. With that being said, I have been so blessed with the support of my family, my assistant coach, my team, and truly the entire Daytona Beach community. I am truly blessed to call Daytona Beach my hometown and even more blessed to represent Daytona State College each and every day,” commented Stegall on the special night.

“Eight months ago I knew very little about ovarian cancer and how devastating this cancer is. It is dubbed the ‘silent killer’ because the subtle symptoms of this cancer often go unnoticed until advanced stages of cancer. I hope events like tonight bring awareness to this disease and its symptoms so that more women catch this cancer in its early stages when it is very treatable,” Stegall remarked on the significance of the evening.

The fans who came out to support Stegall were also treated to a great match.

The match started slow for the Falcons as they found themselves down eight points midway through set one, a substantial deficit in volleyball, making a comeback difficult and potentially out of reach. However, the Falcons etched a comeback of monumental proportions. As a result of great serving and timely errors by the Patriots, the Falcons claimed victory in set one, 25-23.

Daytona State College gained the momentum and didn’t look back. They captured the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-16. The Falcons landed 39 kills in the match hitting an impressive .242 for the night. The defensive effort was evenly dispersed for the Falcons with the team recording 59 digs in the match.

Sophomores Gabi Soto and Carla Hernandez led the offensive attack for the Falcons. Hernandez recorded 11 kills on the night with Soto adding 10.

Sophomore setter Bruna Avila directed the attack with 35 assists. The Falcon’s defense was led by sophomore libero Nicole Rodriguez with 13 digs.

DAN BIFERIE: A Life in Photography A strong case could be made that no one knows Daytona State College better than Dan Biferie, Chair of the School of Photography and holder of many titles in his time here.

big plans to open their own studio or gallery, but the terms he uses now to describe those plans are “pipe dream,” “thin” and “poorly conceived.” It never got off the ground.

When Dan retires next May, he’ll take with him a lifetime of memories that include his time as a student, an extraordinary set of circumstances that allowed him to be hired in 1975, seven presidents, 10 vice-presidents, five deans, and countless students who have gone on to accomplish great things.

The young couple struggled as Dan worked odd jobs to make ends meet, but in 1975, everything aligned for him. Through a connection with a former classmate, Dan was headed south again for a job at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. He and Kathy packed up the station wagon with their German shepherd in the backseat, and made the drive down I-95. He wanted to stop in Daytona Beach though, to pay a quick visit to his instructors at Daytona State. It was a fateful meeting.

The College has been open for 62 years and Dan has been a member of the faculty for the last 45. His sense of humor comes through when he looks around his office and talks about the physical things he has to take with him too. Books, meaningful personal items and of course pictures, many of them his own work, will all have to be packed up eventually. “Whenever you’re doing something, you can’t help but think about it being the last time.”

Dan has fond memories of how it all began.

Describing himself as a lost young man, he had a history teacher in high school who noticed the only time he didn’t get into trouble was when he had a camera in his hands. She helped him get a spot on the yearbook staff and the school paper, and a supportive graphic arts teacher allowed him to use the lab whenever he wanted.

Dan chuckles when he admits the benefits included a permanent hall pass and putting him front-and-center at many exciting events, but it gave him something even more important - direction.

Dan’s first attempt at college ended badly at Miami Dade Community College where his grades were poor, but after working in a photography shop, he decided to give it another chance. He enrolled in the photography program’s first class in 1969 at Daytona Beach Community College and learned that photography was much more than he ever thought it could be, falling in love with it as an art-form.

Dan earned his AS in Photography in 1971 before transferring to Ohio University, where he added a bachelor’s and master’s degree to his resumé, but things weren’t going so well in Ohio. He and his wife Kathy, an artist, had

A professor had just resigned without notice a week before classes were scheduled to start, and they needed someone with a master’s degree to fill the position quickly.

They asked Dan if he would interview for the job on the spot. So, with Kathy and the dog still in the running car, Dan interviewed. “I got the job right there, not at all like it’s done now,” Dan said. “I went out and told my wife, who knew it was taking longer inside than it should have, ‘We’re not going any further, this is where we’re going to stay.’ I swear there was an angel on my shoulder.”

Job interviews weren’t the only thing different about those days. There were battles when it came to building the School of Photography into what it is today, and starting as a 24-year old professor, Dan was there for all of them. An early victory though, came in the form of a grant that would allow them to build three cases to display students’ work from other colleges. That small thing was the humble beginning of the Southeast Museum of Photography, a seed Dan traces back to his crazy idea to open a gallery with no money and no art in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

In 1977, Dan convinced then President Dr. Charles Polk to allow him to use space in the Jeanne M. Goddard Center as a gallery, creating the DBCC Gallery of Fine Arts.

Shortly thereafter, in 1979, the gallery began to host events and collect work from some of the most well-known photographers of the time. “We had no budget, we vacuumed the carpets and mixed the punch ourselves, got volunteers and students to help, and people to donate work. About a year or two later, we

were given a small budget to work with and were able to bring in some internationally known photographers.”

There is a note of pride in Dan’s voice as he describes the early days of his career, and a sense of deep gratitude when he talks about the people who helped him along the way as the School of Photography continued to grow, and the present-day Southeast Museum of Photography became a fully realized dream when it officially opened the doors to a multi-million dollar facility in 1992. There are so many people who played a part in what Dan has accomplished in his time at Daytona State, it seems to overwhelm him as he reflects and talks about them.

Among the people Dan singled out during his time at the College was Dr. Polk, whom he called a visionary whose greatest strength was giving people the freedom to take something they were passionate about and move it forward. Dan’s wife also played a major role, with Kathy serving as museum curator for 12 years during its earliest days.

“I would hang the work myself, and she would come in there with the baby, look at what I did, and then tell me to go sit with little Danny. She would re-hang everything and make it look good. To this day, she’s the one with all the tools.”

Dan now looks forward to being “just a practicing artist” and not being on a set schedule, but there are still things he will miss, most of all, the students who allowed him to have a job where he could talk and share ideas about the things he loved the most, while growing and learning right alongside them.

His time at Daytona State was a lifelong investment that shaped his entire life, but he says it’s time for someone else to take the torch. He knows everything that he helped build will continue to grow after he’s retired and wants to see what others are able to do with it. “I would not have been at Daytona State 45 years if it were not for the people and the support I had here. It’s given me a chance to grow and work with extremely talented people, and I never lost sight of being part of something much bigger, because there are a lot of good things happening here.”

This year’s three-day extravaganza kicked off Thursday, October 10 with Daytona State College’s School of Photography Alumni Reunion in Photography Hall and the Mr. & Ms. DSC Pageant in the L. Gale Lemerand Student Center.

Friday’s activities began with the Alumni Awards in the Conference Center. And, in the Hosseini Center’s Madorsky Theater, LaTonya Polk, Manager, DSC Career Services, presented a LinkedIn 101 workshop that was informative and helpful to students and alumni alike.

Friday also featured the Falcon Challenge Ping-Pong Tournament in the Gaming Lounge located in the Lemerand Student Center, and concluded with Movie & S’mores with an outdoor movie presentation, free pizza and fire pits.

Falcon spirit dominated the 4th annual Mr. & Ms. DSC pageant where six contestants entertained a capacity crowd in the L. Gale Lemerand Student Center.

Ultimately, JJ Finn was crowned Mr. DSC 2019 and Jasmine Robinson was crowned Ms. DSC 2019. JJ is in his freshman year working toward an AA degree and also is a right-handed pitcher for the DSC Falcons baseball team.

A member of the DSC Concert Choir, Jasmine is a junior planning on a career in education.

HOMECOMING 2019

Homecoming 2019 culminated with a full-day of activities on Saturday, October 12 beginning with the 4th Annual 5K Family Fun Walk/Run benefiting student scholarships followed by the Car & Truck Show. The President’s Choice went to Renee Hanson, DSC Alum ‘00, and her 1964 Plymouth, Barracuda. New this year, was the Arts & Crafts Fair held in conjunction with the Car & Truck show.

Eighteen guests learned techniques from Chef Costa at the Culinary Boot Camp in the kitchen labs of the Hosseini Center.

Alumni softball and baseball players took to the fields, and the Tailgate Party & Cookout near the DSC Soccer Stadium featured free barbecue, a bounce house, rock climbing wall, corn hole tournament and other family-fun activities.

Alumni Awards Breakfast: Celebrating the Best of the Best Success can be measured in various ways, but the quality of a Daytona State College education can be measured by how our graduates move forward in making better lives for themselves, their families and their communities.

One of the many highlights of the Homecoming Celebration is the Alumni Awards Breakfast.

Each year, the Alumni & Friends Association recognizes the professional accomplishments and community achievements of notable alumni.

On the morning of October 11 in DSC’s beautiful Daytona Beach Campus Conference Center, four alumni were honored as shining reflections of the College’s mission and values.

“Recognizing our outstanding graduates is a great source of pride for me, and I know we can all be proud of this special community at Daytona State College,” said Dr. Tom LoBasso, President. “So, whether you are an employee, attended our College decades ago, or are a recent graduate, I hope you take pride in being forever a Daytona State Falcon.”

Margaret Crumley Award for Distinguished Achievement in Science MARY MCGEHEE from UCF in 1989. “My best professors were all from Daytona State because they truly cared about you,” she said.

Mary McGehee’s amazing journey all began at Daytona State, initially receiving a Certificate of Cosmetology in 1980, then returning to earn an AA degree in 1983. She then graduated from Stetson University with a BS in Physics, and ultimately earned a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering

As an industrial engineer, she worked for Publix Supermarkets in Lakeland, before switching paths to work for the Department of Environmental Protection. She soon returned to Daytona State for a third time to enroll in core engineering courses such as calculus, physics, and her favorite - chemistry. “When it’s time to reinvent yourself, take some classes. You’ll never know where you’re going to end up.”

Mary eventually earned another bachelor’s degree from UCF in 2002, this time in Civil Engineering, and she currently serves as

project manager for the Florida Department of Transportation. In her time with the FDOT, she has overseen several key projects, including environmental impact studies pertaining to the NASA Causeway Bridge.

She is now leading the FDOT project studying the social, environmental and natural impacts of closing the 3.6-mile gap in the Saint Johns River-to-Sea Trail here in Volusia County.

Mary and her husband Mark are also the proud parents of two Daytona State College alumni who completed their AA degrees through dual enrollment before earning bachelor’s degrees from Stetson University.

Alumni of the Year - CARLY MEEK She graduated from DSC in 2002 with honors and went on to attend the University of Central Florida where she earned a BS in Criminal Justice. After earning her Juris Doctor from Florida Coastal School of Law in 2006 (where she made the Dean’s List), Carly worked as a staff attorney for the Seventh Judicial Circuit, and later served as Assistant Attorney for the City of Ormond Beach, and Assistant Attorney for the City of Daytona Beach.

Attorney, model and philanthropist, Carly Meek began with a dream to be a lawyer.

Because she had to work full-time, “Daytona State was the absolute perfect fit for me because it offered flexibility in my schedule.

I am forever proud to be a Falcon!”

Carly’s modeling work has taken her to fashion shows in New York and includes spreads in COPA Style and Gladys Magazine.

She was the Mrs. Maryland United States in 2018, and now holds the title of Mrs. Florida United States for 2019.

Serving the local community has always been very important to her and since 2011, she has been involved with the Healthy Start Coalition, a state initiative dedicated to optimizing healthy outcomes for mothers and babies.

She has served in various leadership positions within that organization, including two terms as president, and in 2015 she was honored with the Mayor Blaine O’Neal Community Service Award.

Distinguished Faculty/Staff Award - GINA STAFFORD a million dollars a year in funding, but students are her primary focus.

“My mom always taught me about service and what I’ve learned since I’ve been here at Daytona State College, is that we are here to serve our students, so every capacity that I’ve been in, that’s what I have done,” she said.

Gina Stafford is Associate Director for the Office of Academic Affairs and is also a 1999 graduate of the College. She earned a bachelor’s in Psychology from UCF and master’s in Counseling from Webster.

During her time as coordinator with the DSC Women’s Center, Gina’s leadership resulted in the expansion of childcare services from the Flagler/Palm Coast Campus to a college-wide program.

In 2006, Gina launched the DSC Resource Fair, which allows students, staff and faculty to familiarize themselves with all the services available on the Daytona Beach Campus.

Each summer, she also coordinates career exploration camps that are free of charge to Volusia and Flagler County high school students.

Gina is a well-known face in her community and enjoys serving on several committees and boards in various capacities such as the Martin Luther King Celebration Committee, Mid-Town Community Development Corp., and Soroptimist International of the Greater Daytona Beach area.

She also works alongside her mother as an advocate for WITNEST, a residential shelter in Daytona Beach that provides shelter and other services to women at risk.

Young Alumni Excellence Award - BRIAN BROOKER But even with his professional accomplishments growing at an accelerated rate, he’s never forgotten where he got his start. “Daytona State was the launchpad into my life,” he remarked.

Brian Brooker graduated from Daytona State College in 2016 with a 4.0 GPA before continuing his education at Rollins College.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Management, graduating cum laude, and is now pursuing his MBA at Rollins.

Brian’s work to improve the environment spans two continents. While traveling in Western Europe, he helped cultivate and manage farms in Germany, and worked to improve student housing for the underprivileged in Portugal.

Through his work in “Grow Orlando” that dealt with gentrification in the Parramore neighborhood, Brian has helped local communities with urban farming, which provides a source of fresh and sustainable food for those less fortunate.

While at Daytona State, Brian played for the Falcon baseball team and was the 2016 Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year.

He also played baseball for two years at Rollins, where he was a two-year starter batting .284 with 14 home runs and 67 RBI. He was also a two-time member of the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Here in the United States, Brian has volunteered for “Clean the World,” an organization founded in Orlando that addresses global health issues by using discarded hygiene supplies from the hospitality industry.

A

fter serving on the District Board of Trustees since 2006, Forough Hosseini stepped down from her position on May 31, bringing to a close 13 years of leadership and service to Daytona State College. Those years were filled with incredible growth and remarkable achievements that established the College as a leader in higher education while bringing national acclaim for academic programs and student support services alike.

Much of what the College has today can be attributed to the efforts and advocacy of Forough, and on October 23, she was honored at the 27th annual Gala, where she was presented with an Honorary Bachelor of Applied Science in Public Service degree along with the 2019 Falcon Award.

“When I first met Forough, she struck me immediately as someone with vision and purpose,” said Dr. Tom LoBasso, President.

“She wanted to do things that would positively impact the College. When I look at this College and where it is today, it all happened through a team effort, and she was the beacon for that.”

Though members of the Board are volunteers, they spend countless hours leading and supporting the College’s mission. Through two terms as chair (2008-10, and 201519), Forough led the charge in providing for the needs of DSC students, both social and educational. Students were her focus from the first day she set foot on campus, and she will continue to be a voice for students as well as an advocate of DSC. One of the lasting hallmarks of her dedication to accessibility and affordability came in 2015 when Daytona State became the first college in Florida, and among only a few anywhere in the nation, to lower tuition.

For a generation of students who have seen college tuition skyrocket, this was (and still is) a landmark achievement.

Since her initial appointment as a trustee

by Governor Jeb Bush, and subsequent reappointments by Governors Charlie Crist and Rick Scott, Forough and her husband, Mori, helped the College secure millions of dollars in funding for construction projects while simultaneously guiding policy to move the College closer to its academic performance goals.

During her 13-year tenure, the College expanded academic offerings by adding 11 new bachelor’s degrees and other unique associate degree programs such as interactive media, environmental science, additive manufacturing, hospitality beverage science, and optician technology, to name a few. The College was also recognized with national rankings, including those from prominent publications such as U.S. News & World Report, among others. This includes the number one ranking in the nation for most affordable bachelor’s degrees in engineering technology and nursing.

Since 2008, she has fostered partnerships with Florida State University, the University of Central Florida, Stetson University and most recently, the University of Florida.

Thousands of DSC AA graduates have taken advantage of the DirectConnect to UCF partnership established in 2015, and last summer, a new partnership

with UF was announced, guaranteeing qualified DSC students admission into UF’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

The University of Florida has few such agreements with any school, and it was through Forough’s efforts that Daytona State earned a spot on that very short list.

Forough’s leadership and vision were the impetus that resulted in a comprehensive 10-step plan to eradicate homelessness and hunger among DSC students, which has been recognized as a model by the State Board of Education.

Today, Daytona State’s most vulnerable students have a food pantry, free textbooks, free bus passes, free access to medical services at Halifax Health and AdventHealth, housing at Hope Place and much more.

In 2012, the College opened its Veterans Center on the Daytona Beach Campus and comprehensive services for veterans were established on all campuses, leading to the College being designated a Military Friendly School.

During her tenure, the Falcon athletic program expanded to include men’s and women’s cross country and soccer teams.

The nationally-ranked soccer teams have a beautiful facility to call home, too, thanks in large part to Forough’s efforts. The stadium provides tremendous exposure for the College as it hosted the 2018 NJCAA Division I Men’s Soccer National Championship Tournament as well as hosting the upcoming Women’s National Tournament in 2021.

Forough’s impact on the College will be felt for generations to come, much of it through new and expanded facilities on every campus.

One of those bears the name of her husband, a generous supporter of the College in his own right, which houses the Mori Hosseini College of Hospitality and Culinary Management programs. The $26 million structure, completed in 2007, also serves as home to the Southeast Museum of Photography and the Babazadeh Gallery in recognition of Forough’s family, and includes multi-purpose event space that is second to none.

In 2014, the Flagler/Palm Coast Campus opened a $7.6 million building that features a state-of-the-art teaching and learning environment, and in 2017, her efforts secured more than $13 million over several years of appropriations designated for a new building on the Deltona Campus that will allow the College to improve its vocational programs in west Volusia County.

Around the same time, the College broke ground for its new 84,000 square-foot student center, which opened in the spring of 2019, a $39 million hub of activity on the Daytona Beach Campus that includes space for academic support, career services, student life, and dining services.

Renovations are also underway that will convert the former student center into new offices and student space for the Veterans Center and the Center for Women & Men. None of those projects would have been possible without the support and drive of Forough Hosseini.

“The time with her has been memorable and so many projects that we have, and initiatives that we have taken on, have been driven by her vision,” said LoBasso. “She changed the trajectory of this College, and we’re reaching new heights because of the work she has done.”

Forough is elected chair of the District Board of Trustees.

To reflect its standing as a four-year degree granting institution and expanded mission, the District Board of Trustees approved the name Daytona State College.

The Women’s Golf team earned their 5th National title (that number increased to ten by 2019!).

In addition, the National Tournament was held in Daytona Beach at LPGA International, hosted by Daytona State College.

Beyond funds raised, the gala is a time for community leaders to come together to celebrate the great work of Daytona State in the counties we serve, Flagler and Volusia.

This year’s gala celebrated student success and highlighted the significant work of Forough B. Hosseini over the past 13 years. Her deep involvement, strong leadership and passionate support will live on for many years, and for this we are exceedingly grateful.

More than 380 joined us this year for the gala, and we look forward to next year with great anticipation as we continue to build a thriving Daytona State College.

Award-Winning Photojournalist As an award-winning photojournalist for the Daytona Times, Duane Fernandez has covered several of the most impactful stories that have grabbed headlines around the country in recent years. Among them are the Trayvon Martin murder trial in Sanford, Florida in 2013; the hate-fueled shooting at Charleston, South Carolina’s Emmanuel AME Church in 2015; and Muhammad Ali’s funeral in Louisville, Kentucky in 2016.

Duane received his first camera, a Minolta that came with four flash bulbs, as a Christmas gift from his father when he was seven years old. It was a gift choice that was inspired by what he had seen on the popular legal drama, “Perry Mason.”

Though he always enjoyed photography, it took many years for that interest to become something more than a hobby. Growing up, Duane did what he described as physical work in body shops, or at Colt Firearms, which was headquartered in Hartford.

He was married, later divorced, and became disabled. It was at that point, his love of photography re-emerged.

The Daytona State graduate with an AS in Photography regularly covers the Daytona 500, and in 2016, photographed President Barack Obama at a rally in Kissimmee, an event that still resonates him. “I got to photograph the President of the United

noticed. So I bought a camera, my first digital camera.”

Duane enrolled in Tunxis Community College and a professor gave him a piece of advice that changed his life. “He said one of the best schools in the country for photography is in Daytona Beach.” Daytona Beach, ironically, was already on Duane’s radar. He had first visited the city for Bike Week in 2002 and had grown up a NASCAR fan, so he made the call to Daytona State College, and after talking with an admissions counselor, made the decision to re-locate, something he had already been considering.

Duane said the program at Daytona State, where he started in 2009, allowed him to explore many different types of photography, including urban photography. He would often stop to take pictures of the things he saw as he was out riding his bike, many of them simple things that told a story of the community. They were stories that needed to be told, about people who may not have a way to do so themselves, or places that might otherwise be forgotten.

When combined with his interests in civil rights and history, Duane’s talent, not just as a photographer, but as a photojournalist,

is on full display. Part of that has nothing to do with his skills per se, but the humanity in which he approaches the subject. Some of that he learned from being disabled himself, and some of that from the very people he has covered.

Duane also took the words of his DSC professors to heart, especially when they emphasized how important it was to get published. So, when Duane was around town taking pictures, he would figure out who to send them to for the best chance at publication.

One example of that was a rally in Sanford following the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in 2012. Eric Breitenbach, senior professor in the DSC School of Photography, had suggested it would be a good event to attend. “When I got there, I was like ‘Whoa, there must be 20,000 people here!’”

Duane sent about a dozen photos to the Daytona Times, which liked them so much, they were used in a collage. They issued him a press pass, and as the story developed further, Duane continued to cover it. From jury selection all the way through the trial, he was there, and was later among the journalists recognized by the Thurgood

Marshall Organization for their exceptional coverage.

a program teaching at-risk youth to “shoot with cameras, not guns.”

There have certainly been plenty of lighter moments and less serious events for Duane too, who laughed when recounting how he asked Charles Cherry, publisher of the Daytona Times, for a press pass to the Daytona 500 several years ago.

He also produces documentaries, one of which details the Arthur G. Dozier Reform School for Boys, infamous for its reputation for abuse, beatings, rape and murder of students by staff. It operated for over 100 years in Marianna, Florida before it was closed by state authorities in 2011, and Duane’s documentary was among those shown at the 2018 Orlando Film Festival.

Duane has a soft spot for cars, and with both his father and uncle racing them, he spent a lot of his childhood weekends at the track.

Duane ended up getting the pass, and in so doing became the first African-American photographer to cover the Daytona 500. He is a regular at the Daytona Speedway now, and commended NASCAR for its diversity initiatives, and is proud to be a part of that.

Beyond his work as a photographer, Duane runs his own website, Deep Focus News, which covers a wide variety of topics pertaining to Daytona Beach and the surrounding area, from food and sports to general news and social issues. While it does feature his photography, it also allows him to write about the community he loves.

He has other projects nearing completion or in the works too, and his passion for history, civil rights, and the local community can be felt in all of them.

Duane noted he always has his camera and his press pass, so wherever he goes, he’s ready. He represents a good balance of what a student can learn in the classroom at DSC, and what they can learn outside of it if they’re willing to put in a little extra time.

“Sometimes you think you’re not learning, but then you get out in the real world, and it all kicks in.”

Duane’s work extends beyond news and sports too, with his Hardnotts University,

Anna Thornton

Lab Manager, Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience As a young college graduate, Anna Thornton is already in a position where she’s able to pursue her passion. She’s practically surrounded by it. Anna graduated from Daytona State College in the spring of 2012 before transferring to Stetson University where she earned her BS in Marine Biology.

She now serves as Lab Manager at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience on the border of St. Johns and Flagler counties.

With its location on a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and Matanzas River, it’s hard to imagine a better place for someone who loves the marine environment.

Anna was born and raised in Alabama, land-locked in the deep country as she called it, yet always dreamed about being around the water. She moved to Florida in 1998, became scuba certified two years later, and her life has revolved around the water ever since.

That made Daytona State a logical place to begin her college education, though DSC’s marine science program was still in its infancy. Anna was among the first students who were part of the Institute of Marine and Environmental Studies (IMES), established by Dr. Debra Woodall in 2010.

Anna took full advantage of what was being offered, recognizing how important hands-on experience would be for her future.

“In my last semester at DSC, Dr. Woodall started the program that allowed me to go out into the field for the first time,” Anna said. “She showed me techniques I wound up using quite frequently, and still do. I am happy that current DSC students have this program now to prepare them for real-life work in the marine field.”

After graduating from Stetson in the fall of 2016, Anna volunteered at Whitney through the Liao Lab before joining its Osborne Lab

full-time in the spring of 2018. The lab specializes in biogeochemistry, which is the study of elemental cycling in the soil and water of Florida’s estuaries, specifically in regards to carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus.

“Estuaries have been coined as the kidneys of our waterways,” said Anna. “They filter out many potential hazards before the water reaches our oceans, so studying how these important nutrients are fluxed, stored and fixed tells us a lot about the health of our local waterways.”

Though her job title may say lab manager, Anna still actively participates in the fieldwork she fell in love with at Daytona State, and which she describes as her favorite pastime. “I have always had a passion for conservation, so field work and contributing to the health of our local ecosystems is very rewarding.”

One of the benefits of her career is that every time she sets foot on a boat, steps into the water, or explores places most people never get to see firsthand, it’s always a new and unpredictable adventure. For some, the lifestyle that comes with her job may be too adventurous, but for Anna there is always something exciting to see and learn, and the experiences can’t be found anywhere else.

Like the time she was surveying an oyster reef, thigh-deep in water, and a curious dolphin wanted to know what she was doing, swimming so close Anna could reach out and touch him.

She also offered a humorous warning for anyone else interested in doing what she’s doing. “Florida salt marshes and swamps can be some of the most inhospitable field sites.

The heat is real, and it is not for the weary!”

That said, Anna could not have been better prepared for the challenges she would

face with her current job. She was quick to point out the role Daytona State played, especially Dr. Woodall, whom she described as “absolutely amazing.”

“My biology classes prepared me by providing the very foundation of science I depend on every day at work, and without DSC professors pushing me, along with a great curriculum, I would not have been ready for classes at Stetson, and the work I do now.”

Anna emphasized how critical all of that has been for herself, and made two recommendations for those interested in pursuing a similar career path: start volunteering, and get the lab and field experience.

The field study component of IMES provided Anna with another valuable learning experience, and it’s an important tool for students earning their AA at Daytona State and planning to transfer to other four-year universities in Florida. The education plan created for marine science students at DSC was designed with that in mind, which allowed Anna to easily transfer to Stetson for her bachelor’s degree. But it’s the field study, something rarely seen in other two-year

For him, there was never a question where he was going. “I figured I’d be graduating from high school, then I’d be going to college, and Daytona State would be the one. I didn’t consider anywhere else.”

EMT II, or Paramedic program as it came to be known. It was one of the first in the state of Florida, which in 1976, had implemented a statewide standard of Basic Life Support with EMTs, and Advanced Life Support with Paramedics. Since he was already an EMT, John decided to take the next step, enrolled again at Daytona State and became one of the first certified paramedics in Volusia County.

John graduated from Daytona State College with an Associate of Science in Nursing in December 2017, but his resumé contains one set of acronyms after another, all of them describing the various degrees and certifications he has earned, or the tests he has passed in his career. EMT, RN, LEO, ACLS, TEAS and NCLEX are some of them.

You may not know what all of them mean, you just need to know it means you’re in good hands if John Salmon is with you in a tight spot.

While still a teenager, John became a volunteer firefighter with Volusia County, the beginning of his career as a first responder.

In that role, he was often involved in rescue calls and found himself fascinated with the medical side of these emergencies. That led him to look into Daytona State’s EMT program and begin a relationship with the College that has now spanned almost five decades.

John remained with Beacon Ambulance for many years and often trained the company’s paramedics in his role as a supervisor. He was also hired by the City of Edgewater as a reserve police officer, prompting a return to Daytona State and its Law Enforcement Academy, but he realized that was not where his true interests were. “I liked EMS more than I liked law enforcement,” John admitted.

To say John has followed a winding road to get where he is today would be accurate, but in a geographical sense, it wasn’t a long one.

After earning his certification as an EMT, John began working full-time for Beacon Ambulance, a private EMS provider under contract with Volusia County. It wasn’t long after, that Daytona State began offering an

Suddenly, with little or no warning, you’re in an accident, and it’s a bad one. Your life is now in someone else’s hands, and you can only hope it’s someone like John Salmon.

John is a Daytona Beach native and a 1974 graduate of Mainland High School, right across the street from what, at the time, was known as Daytona Beach Community College.

First Responder and Health Care Professional and there was only one place John could think of that would help him scratch it.

He also had the full support of Mary, who knew if John was ever going to go back to school, that was the time to do it. “I didn’t want him to go through the rest of his life thinking, what if I’d done it,” Mary said.

“When you get into your late 50s and early 60s, you look at life a lot differently. I very much encouraged him to do it.”

“I knew there were some places hiring, and I had all of this experience, so I enrolled again in the Law Enforcement Academy at Daytona State’s Advanced Technology College,” John said. “I graduated top of the class, and they even let me speak at graduation, but I told Mary that since I was in that school mode again, why not get my EMT license back too.

So the day after I graduated from the Law Enforcement Academy, I started the EMT program at Daytona State. I walked in the room and saw one of the instructors who teaches in the program, and he said, ‘John, what are you doing here? You taught me!’”

John was told he had some of the highest scores they had ever seen in the EMT program, but he emphasized how much he studied to get them, even with all of the real-world experience he already had. He scored so high, he earned the nickname “Mr. 100%” but there was more to come. Having regained his law enforcement and EMT licenses, John decided to do something he had always considered, but never pursued.

“I was thinking, since I’m in school mode, if I ever had the chance to get my RN license, now would be the time to do it because I really care about people, and I want to help them one-on-one.”

To enroll in the RN program, however, John discovered he would need several prerequisites, which he didn’t have. All of his previous time at Daytona State had been spent in certificate programs that didn’t require them. “I had to go back and start at square one with A&P (anatomy and physiology), math, English, and all this different stuff I had to do for my associate’s

degree. I was thinking, ‘What am I doing?’, but I ended up graduating with almost a 4.0 GPA.” John’s academic success landed him in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and upon graduating in 2017 with his AS in Nursing, he was inducted into the Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society as well. He credits Daytona State with preparing him for the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX), and because of the courses he took previously, including Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), he was also able pass the Florida State Paramedic Exam. “Thanks to Daytona State College and its wonderful programs and instructors, I have all of my licenses back, and can now practice as an RN and paramedic in order to make a difference in individual lives.”

It’s the ability to make a difference that has motivated John through every twist and turn of the winding road he started following in 1974. “Daytona State has been a part of me forever.”

Pritzker Children’s Initiative Fellow There has been a lot of pain in Helena Girouard’s life, more than anyone deserves, but listening to her speak, it’s impossible not to feel the hope she represents for so many. There’s a strength in her voice she may not even know is there. It has to be strong, because most of the people she speaks for don’t yet have a voice, and those who do, may not know what to say.

Helena graduated from Daytona State College in 2017 with an Associate of Science in Human Services with a Specialization in Addiction, as well as an AA degree. She’ll graduate this December from Flagler College with her BS in Public Administration, but is already making an impact through her work as part of the Pritzker Children’s Initiative Fellowship.

Among its objectives, the initiative seeks to expand high-quality early learning opportunities and the well-being of disadvantaged children. It’s the perfect fit for Helena, whose degrees highlight what she’s learned in the classroom, but whose life experience has taught her things that extend far beyond that. That gives her the ability to reach people that few others can.

Helena grew up in Ohio as a busy teenager, involved in just about everything her high school was doing. Whether it was clubs, student leadership positions or sports, she wanted to be in the middle of it all. She graduated eighth in her class, but when she went away to college, Helena went the opposite direction.

From 2002-05, Helena bounced back and forth between Ohio University and what was then Daytona Beach Community College. She had spent summers in Ormond Beach when she was younger, and her father had moved there, so there was a natural connection to Florida. She attended DBCC during the 2003-04 school year, but her attendance was sporadic.

“I’d enroll in classes, go for a couple of weeks, and then not show up, or show up and do none of the work,” said Helena. “I’m not really sure what I was thinking.”

Her one year at Daytona State was followed by another year back at Ohio University before she moved to Florida permanently in 2005.

By that time, her mother, younger sister and younger brother had migrated to Florida too, but that didn’t make things any easier for Helena. While living in Gainesville and working in the restaurant industry, she was introduced to the opioid scene, and lost everything she had in a downward spiral that resulted in multiple arrests, but even then, she hadn’t hit bottom.

After returning home to Ormond Beach, Helena was exposed to worse, but after learning she was pregnant in 2013, she made a series of decisions that turned her life around as she began digging out of a deep hole. It started with a visit to the health department and Dr. Pam Carbiener.

“She asked me about my background and saw how I had tried going to college. She said I had potential and I thought she was absolutely nuts, and I was just this junkie sitting in her office. Dr. Carbiener was one of the first people to say something like that to me in 10 years.”

Helena was determined that her baby would not be born dependent. On December 13, 2013, with the encouragement of Dr. Carbiener, she went to the hospital and spent six days in detox so her baby wouldn’t have to when she was born a few weeks later, on January 22, 2014.

Helena knew she still had to make amends for the things she had done, which included resolving warrants for her arrest, but that didn’t make it easy, especially with a newborn daughter. Nevertheless, she made another in her series of decisions to get her life back on track, knowing how much it would hurt.

“That one was the hardest, handing my two-week old baby over to my mom, walking into a jail, and saying, ‘I have warrants, here I am.’”

Helena was gone for 71 days, but after being released, she was able to complete the sixmonth treatment program she had already started in December before going to Family Renew, an organization that gives homeless families with children a safe and stable place to live while rebuilding their lives. By then, her daughter was 10 months old, and Helena could finally concentrate on doing just that.

As part of getting her life back in order, Helena came back to Daytona State, more than 10 years after first attending. “My earlier student loans were in default, my credits were all over the place and I had destroyed my GPA. I think all of the appeals you could possibly do, I had to do,” Helena said, with a laugh.

It took some effort, but Helena was able to balance her work schedule, classes and taking care of her daughter. Through Daytona State’s AS degree program in Human Services, she was also required to do two externships, and that was initially a challenge because of her background. Ultimately, all parties involved found a way to pull it off, and as a result, Helena was able to work with Healthy Start, an organization that had provided assistance for her daughter when Helena was in treatment. By doing both of her externships there, she learned more about their mission and was in the perfect spot to take another step toward her goals.

Near the end of her time at Healthy Start, she learned about the Public Administration BS program at Flagler College with a grant attached to it. Thinking it might be too good to be true, Helena talked to her DSC advisor and learned it was the real deal. She applied and was accepted into the program, but the connections she made during her time at Healthy Start paid off in another way.

While working two jobs, she got a call from the Thrive by Five Collaborative, which was applying for a fellowship from the Pritzker Children’s Initiative. Although being told they preferred someone with a Ph.D., she was welcomed into the fellowship based on the overwhelming strength of her life experience.

Everything she had been through, from the difficult circumstances surrounding her daughter’s birth, a return to college, to her time spent with Healthy Start, had put her in a position where she could be a voice for others in similar situations.

As one of only 13 members of the Pritzker Fellowship nationwide, Helena is involved in creating policies and programs that assist the most vulnerable children by establishing connections with parents, childcare providers, mental health specialists, and others. Part of her work involves traveling across the country, attending conferences, or speaking to various groups herself.

Helena still remembers being in the courtroom after turning herself in for outstanding warrants. She had 18 people standing with her that day and 57 letters of recommendation that formed the building blocks of her future. She remembers Dr. Carbiener, whose encouragement set her on the right path, and whom she credits for making sure she had a healthy baby girl and stronger relationships with her entire family.

Now she’s able to give that same support to others.

Living her best life, leaving a beautiful legacy

Carol Chabot Murphy, from a very early age, learned what it meant to work hard, invest in what you believe in and give back to the community where you live.

So, it is not surprising that she has made plans to leave her estate to Daytona State College for the benefit of students from Volusia County.

With her father as her primary life influence, Carol soaked up the “Midwestern” values instilled by her parents, Arthur and Dorothy Kellogg Chabot and step-mother, Margaret, who her father married following the death of Dorothy when Carol was in high school.

Those values – what Business Insider magazine, in an October 12, 2018 article says – include, ‘People are genuinely nice, The weather is unpredictable and extreme, The people are always finding new ways to have fun, Life might be slower-but it isn’t any smaller, There’s more room to move around and, A dollar goes further in the Midwest.’

Arthur’s Kankakee, Ill. roots, coupled with the fact that he sold a furniture store at the age of 38 and “retired” to Wilton Manors – located in southeast Florida’s Broward County – gave him all the impetus he needed to remake himself.

As he remade himself in the commercial and residential property ownership and management business, Carol watched and learned.

From those up-close-and-personal life lessons, Carol created a thriving foliage business in DeLeon Springs, Fla. that she operated from 1974 to 2000. Her persistence, willingness to live meagerly and reinvestment of almost everything she possessed into the business made possible success where others might have acquiesced to the forces against them.

In 1992, Carol was named Florida Woman of the Year in Agriculture by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Five years ago, 14 years after selling her business and as she battled cancer, Carol began another kind of investment: an investment in the future of DSC students she doesn’t know and will likely never meet. ______________________________________ “I’m grateful to have had the opportunities I’ve had in life, and I trust that what I’m leaving Daytona State College Foundation will be put to work to make it so for others.”

– Carol Chabot Murphy ______________________________________ Quoted in her father’s obituary, which was published by the Sun Sentinel newspaper on March 12, 1990, Carol affirms what her brother-in-law said of her father, “[he] was one of the few people who lived life on his own terms.” This is true of Carol herself.

Part of living her life ‘on her own terms’ is the fierce determination that the possessions she will leave behind someday will be of great benefit to Daytona State students long into the future.
