A DAI EXCLUSIVE! February 26–May 22, 2022 This juried exhibition highlights exceptional contemporary art, including paintings, sculpture, multi-media art, printmaking and photography, by nationally recognized and emerging African American artists from across the United States. A total of 85 works by 44 artists will be featured.

This marks the seventh annual presentation of Black Heritage Through Visual Rhythms and its first time being hosted at the Dayton Art Institute. The exhibition’s Best in Show winner will be featured in a 2023 Focus Exhibition at the DAI. A full-color catalog will accompany the exhibition.

FIRED IMAGINATION: ANCIENT CHINESE CERAMICS FROM THE NANCY AND ED ROSENTHAL FAMILY COLLECTION February 5–July 24, 2022 This DAI-exclusive exhibition traces the history of ceramics in China. They served a variety of needs—from holding liquids to accompanying the deceased in a tomb—but also were vehicles for artists to imagine new forms and decorations.

Nature and the culture of their time provided inspiration and today these give us insights into the daily life and fashions of different periods in Chinese history. Ranging from figures to vessels and spanning almost 4,000 years, explore how the art evolved over time.

VAN GOGH AND EUROPEAN LANDSCAPES March 5–September 4, 2022 The DAI’s 2022 Focus Exhibition season will be highlighted by the work of the world’s most famous artist, Vincent van Gogh!

A remarkable pair of Van Gogh paintings, on loan to the DAI, will be at the center of this look at European landscape painting. The exhibition will also include works by Daubigny, Corot, Turner, Constable and others.

THE FLOWER PRINTS OF KATSUHIRA TOKUSHI April 2–September 18, 2022 Discover the work of Katsuhira Tokushi (1904–1971) through a complete set of his series Twelve Works on Flower Selling Customs (1959). From a family of farmers and papermakers, Tokushi was largely a self-taught artist. His works feature scenes of traditional rural life in Akita, a prefecture in the far north of Japan. Additional works supplement the exhibition, including a handmade book by Tokushi on the art of woodblock printmaking.
