Students Doing Their Part to Honor Veterans of Deep River By Christian Maldonado Staff Writer

Since the start of the school year, three Valley Regional High School seniors have found a unique way to not only give thanks to veterans who have served their country, but find a way that it can benefit their schooling and future as well.

Gavin Abderhalden, Rinze Knoop, and Patrick Finnegan, members of their school’s National Honor’s Society, have spearheaded “Roots of Remembrance,” an initiative that is close to home in Deep River. In 1952, townspeople planted 14 trees in remembrance of veterans from Deep River. Now, 73 years later, the three boys are planning to re-plant all 14 trees, as a continued support of the

veterans who fought to protect their country, and the town of Deep River. They are also working alongside a U.S. Navy veteran, Richard Nagot, who is the Senior Vice Commander of American Legion Post 61 in Deep River. North Pole or Bust Rudolph, elves, and Santa & Mrs. Claus await the North Pole Express locomotive as it pulls into the North Pole station through fresh snow on Dec. 14. The crew climbed aboard the Essex Steam Train's seasonal journey to greet families bundled in their warmest pajamas for a train ride of holiday sing-alongs, hot chocolate and sugar cookies, with each child receiving a gift from Santa during the journey.
