An Introduction to Shore’s New Sports Editor

Welcome to 2026!

We open the new year with town-bytown wrap-ups of all the major news in all five of our Shore Publishing publications, but we also start 2026 with a new sports editor, Serenity Bishop, who has replaced Gabby Maljanian, who did such a great job ensuring high school coverage over the past few months. Gabby has become a leading sports podcaster in Connecticut, and we wish her well.

Serenity Bishop is a known quantity to many of you. A resident of Bristol, he has freelanced for Shore in the past and his experience includes work as senior sports editor for The Bristol Press, where he covered both the WNBA and UConn basketball.

My impression of Serenity is that he loves all sports and will do a great job covering the local high school sports scene, from Deep River to Branford. He hit the ground running just last week by knocking out year-end reviews of all the local teams who made an impact in the area in 2025, so he quickly became familiar with the best of the best. He’ll be covering all sports,

Elsewhere, effective methods to restore and protect shorelines have moved in the direction of gathering and arranging floating trees and gone further. Introducing additional kinds of natural material has created living shorelines that support the growth of sea vegetation and animals into a permeable buffer that grows into a living habitat, absorbs erosion-causing boat wake, and protects the shoreline. The living shoreline repairs itself and grows stronger.

Using dredge material would build a rigid structure that would eventually break and need to be repaired. Dredge material is often contaminated and of a consistency not likely to support the growth of plants and animals and to create a living shoreline.

Accumulated dredge material prevents the free movement of pleasure boats in South and Middle Coves in Essex. The simplest solution is to load the dredge onto barges and dump it in designated areas in Long Island Sound.

Without demonstrating an environmental need to do so, the cost would fall to the residents and businesses.

Because nearby Thatched Island has suffered decades of erosion, they propose to dump the dredge onto the island to cover eroded areas and prevent erosion.

With the town’s consent and creation of an ad hoc committee, a study was conducted to support their proposal.

The study showed that their proposal would not work, and such past dumping had not prevented erosion. The study did provide a simple plan to gather floating trees and arrange them along the eastern shore of the island to deter further erosion.

The study’s findings were ignored.

Our boy Fudgie was trapped on the shelter property, envying all the cats he saw inside who were safe and well fed.

Apparently abandoned, the poor boy was covered with engorged ticks when he was trapped, so he must have been outside for quite a while. Fudgie is a sleek and shiny all-black cat with a big personality. He is a complete lovebug who is playful and likes to be in the midst of all the action.

Region 4 Board of Education budget passes after referendum in all three towns. The budget ended up totaling north of $24 million for the 2025-2026 school year. Only 620 voters among the three towns showed up to the polls, a less than 5% voter turnout. Of these, 335 voted to approve the budget, while 285 voted to reject it.

Students and community members assist in a project for the new Chester Elementary School fish tank. While the students have done their part of learning more about the fish that will live in the new tank, as well as helping to raise money, many people in the community have stepped up in order to help the students get a new 300 gallon tank, that is set to be put in for the 2026 school year.

Chester residents vote in favor of an $18,567,708 budget at a town meeting, with over 100 residents in attendance. The budget is a full 10% increase over last year, with a large chunk of the budget going towards the Region 4 budget. b

June “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” receives six nominations from the Sondheim Awards. The award show allowed students involved in the production to have one last time where they could slip into their roles and celebrate their accomplishments all together.

The Town of Chester was awarded $796,000 for a Three Bridges Project from the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program. It was aimed at addressing erosion and repairs to bridges on Straits Road, Sypher Road, and David Road.

July State Rep. Renee LaMark Muir opens a town hall to the residents of Chester, where she took questions, comments and concerns from people who attended. She also provided insight into the work that she is doing for the town at the state level, including challenges that the state faces.

These include federal budget cuts related to things like Medicaid, Medicare, education, and infrastructure. She also mentioned bills that were passed to improve environmental and special education measures in the town.

A public hearing is scheduled by the Board of Selectmen for the proposed building of a new cell tower in the town. The town wanted to use this as a way to inform the town on the building plans and bring in a representative from the cell tower company to speak more about what this would mean to residents. b

August Residents gave their thoughts and opinions on the new plans for a cell tower in the town of Chester. While they were in agreement that cell service in the town is subpar, many people had concerns over the location of the proposed tower (16 Grote Road) as well as some of the health concerns with living so close to a cell tower.

Cindy Lignar emphasized that there will be a cell tower built, and that the tower company would consider using private property if there was no agreement on a public space.

December The Deep River Firehouse Building Commission has begun setting the groundwork for a new facility in the near future. The commission has not made any final decisions, but has discussed the possible location of this new building.

Deep River Parks and Recreation met with the Board of Finance to propose a

new before and after-school program for children at Deep River Elementary School.

The program would be similar to Chester’s after-school program, hiring para-educators and high school students to assist. It received approval from the board.

Deep River Elementary School was awarded with a $3,400 grant from Deep River Cares and the Community Foundation of Middlesex County. The grant will give students in grades 3-6 an opportunity to explore their local ecosystems and learn more about the life that inhabits Rocky Neck State Park in the spring.

Library Hosts Food Drive Essex Library Association (ELA) will host a food drive until Friday, Jan. 30, during regular library operating hours. A wagon for nonperishable donated food items is set up across from the library’s circulation desk. The donated food items benefit the Region 4 Backpack Program, which provides nutritious food when other resources are not available to students identified by school social workers at Essex Elementary, John Winthrop Middle School, and Valley Regional High School. Occasions when other resources are unavailable include weekends or school vacations. state title banners as well as maintained consistency each season by reaching the state tournaments and finishing with winning seasons.

Here is a look back at 2025, and how Valley Regional has fared throughout the year:

Yet despite all the pressure and the other clubs gunning to unseat the Warriors from their perch, they persisted with a team score of 132 to net Valley a Shoreline Conference three-peat.

The score surpasses last year’s tally of 130.55 for the event.

In the all-around, it was a family affair for the top two spots. Sophomore Camille Pagliuco took the top spot with a 34.0 score, and she was followed by her senior sister and captain Corina in second at 32.85. Camille was the bar champion with a score of 8.1 and claimed the beam crown (9.2). She was second for the floor before taking the top allaround score on the night.

Captain Corina finished runner-up on vault (8.65) and tied for second on bars (7.6 score) to aid her second-place all-around showing. Sophomore Clementine Lavezzoli placed runner-up on beam (8.7) for the conference championship meet. Junior Sadie Iselin finished fourth for her beam performance at 8.5. b

Girls Crew Team The Valley Regional-Old Saybrook co-op crew team had lots of highs this past spring, and with a group so dedicated to becoming better rowers, many athletes took strides to help set a strong foundation for the program’s future.

The squad concluded its 2025 season on June 1 at the Emerson Regatta, where the athletes earned two first places, two second places, and two third-place wins.

The Valley Regional-Old Saybrook girls’ co-op crew’s First Varsity 4 boat took first place with a time of 6:14.8

and brought home the Founder’s Trophy at the Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association state championship regatta on May 18.

Fall Sports The fall featured an immense amount of success for Valley Regional. On the football field, the warriors finished the regular season 7-3. The team only fell to North Branford, Cromwell/Portland, and Hartford Public.

The boys’ soccer team finsihed 8-7-1, earning the No. 15 seed in Class S. They defeated No. 18 East Catholic in the first round, but fell to No. 2 Shepaug Valley in the second round. The girls soccer calimed a regular season record of 13-2-1 and earned a bye week in the state tournament as the second seed.

The Valley Regional High School Unified Team played their counterparts from the Hale-Ray High School Unified Team on March 15 during halftime of the girls Class S championship game between the Morgan School and Coventry at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Lastly, the Valley Regional volleyball team shined with a 19-1 regular season record. Their lone loss came to Waterford, but during the state tournament the team earned a first round bye as the second seed as well.

The volleyball team defeated No. 18 Morgan in the second round, but fell to top-seeded Canton in the quarterfinals.

Come in from the cold and check out what’s hot at the 20th Annual Goodspeed Festival of New Musicals from Friday, Jan. 16, to Sunday, Jan. 18. The muchanticipated three-day festival of brandnew works will light up the Goodspeed campus with a weekend filled with insider events, seminars, a cabaret, staged readings, and a special 20th Anniversary Festival Concert.

The Festival of New Musicals kicks off Jan. 16 at The Goodspeed with a staged reading of Miss Hysteria. Inspired by true events, Miss Hysteria follows the wrongly institutionalized Louise Gleizes, a young actress in 19th-century Paris, who strikes a bargain to perform symptoms of “hysteria” for freedom and discovers the power—and peril—of owning her own story. It features a book and lyrics by Laura Schein and Ben Zeadman with music by Zeadman.

The highlight on Saturday, Jan. 17, will be a staged reading of F Word, a heartwarming coming-of-age story about Tessa, a teenager on the brink of aging out of the foster care system, as she faces the future and finds family where she least expects it.

Shoreline Arts Alliance is now accepting applications for the 46th annual Scholarships in the Arts program. This program is open to high school juniors and seniors who are pursuing further study in the arts and reside within Shoreline Arts Alliance’s 24-town region—which covers all of Middlesex County, Madison, Guilford, North Branford, Branford, East Haven, Lyme, East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Salem. Applicants may apply in the fields of creative

writing, dance, instrumental music, theatre, visual art, and vocal music.

Deserving students will be awarded scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,000.

The winner in each category will receive a $1,000 scholarship for continuing education and/or supplies as well as a mentorship from a professional artist. Applications are now available through the Shoreline Arts Alliance website and will be accepted through Jan 8. Applicants will be contacted to schedule interviews and auditions.

The Belle Vie Café Loft Gallery is currently featuring the artwork of Patricia Shoemaker, a Shoreline Arts Trail artist whose paintings explore the relationship between place, light, and everyday life.

Harmony of Land and Life: Reflections from an Italian Journey showcases Shoemaker’s work, which is rooted in a deep fascination with place—how light, atmosphere, and human presence combine to form the quiet poetry of a landscape. In this exhibition, Shoemaker presents a series of oil paintings created during her time in Italy, where the rhythm of the countryside and the energy of its cities offered an endless source of inspiration.
