Neck River Elementary Ready for Sept. 1

With the snip of ceremonial scissors on Aug. 19, Madison officially marked the opening of Neck River Elementary School, a stateof-the-art facility that will welcome 650 students from pre-kindergarten through grade 5 this fall.

Town officials, education leaders, and building consultants gathered at the school’s entrance to celebrate the milestone, offer remarks, and tour the modern educational campus.

First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons called the project a “very significant milestone in our town’s history,” representing the culmination of “many tenacious years of community

engagement, investigation, exploration and analysis.”

She commended town officials and volunteers for their persistence in navigating financial and market challenges to bring the project to life.

Lauren Evans: The Face of Neck River

When Neck River Elementary School opens its doors for the first time on Monday, Sept. 1, one of the first people students, families, and visitors will meet is Secretary Lauren Evans—known affectionately among staff as the “Face of Neck River.”

It may sound like a heavy title, but Lauren sees it as one of the more enjoyable parts of the job.

“I like assisting, I like multitasking,” she says. “I like helping people and being social. I think it’s a good position.”

As the school’s front-office secretary, Lauren will greet visitors, direct phone calls, and guide people where they need to go. She’s already working on memorizing the layout of the large new building—knowledge that will come in handy if, for example, a teacher calls out sick and she needs to direct a substitute to the correct classroom.

“It’s beautiful,” she says.

“Everybody put so much work into it. It’s going to be a really fun place to be.”

Lauren knows the Connecticut shoreline well. She grew up in Old Lyme and now lives in Westbrook. Though this is her first year working in Madison Public Schools, the town is familiar territory. She moved back to the shoreline in 2020 after living in Boston, following the birth of her son.

Now, she’s surrounded by family again—her husband, son, and daughter, plus her parents, brothers, and several nieces and nephews.

“I wanted my kids and my

brothers’ kids to grow up close to each other,” Lauren says. “That was a big pull for us to move here.

And the shoreline is the most beautiful place, and we’re such beach people. Every minute we can, we’re at the beach and raising kids on the water.”

While in Boston, she worked at a weight-loss facility where, she says, she was “the face of the company there, too.” She also brings experience from her time working at Kathleen E. Goodwin Elementary School in Old Saybrook.

That blend of front-office and elementary school experience makes her a perfect fit for the Neck River front desk.

In her role, she says, it’s important to be “knowledgeable about everything,” including “the way that the system works, being a calm presence, answering the phone.”

“Everyone here has been super helpful getting me on my feet and answering any questions I have. So hopefully soon I’ll be able to answer any question that comes through without having to put people on hold.”

Lauren sees her job as one of service and connection. “People are calling you for a reason,” she says, so giving them helpful answers right away is a responsibility she takes seriously.

Working in a school—especially one filled with young students—is something she views as a major plus.

“I definitely like working with kids, it’s awesome,” she says. “Little kids are the best. They’re funny, and the mood is so fun when you’re around them. I loved it when I was at the elementary school in Old Saybrook. I love walking in every day and saying ‘Hey’ to everybody and seeing what

everyone has been up to and working together as a team. I like collaborating with people and being social.”

“When I saw this job listing pop up,” she adds, “I thought it would be fun to still work in a school and make new friends and traditions, and be a part of the community.”

While elementary schools may not be known for their quiet, Lauren says it’s the “busyness” of the role that energizes her.

From the morning chatter of arriving students to the pace of day-to-day operations, she enjoys what she calls “the buzz of the community.”

“It’s the kids coming in in the morning and [being] excited to see their friends, and excited to learn.”

And at the heart of that buzz, Lauren is looking forward to meeting more families and making connections throughout the new Neck River community.

Marilyn Slifka Madison Marilyn V. Slifka, 85, of Madison, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025, at Connecticut Hospice. Marilyn was born on Dec. 19, 1939, in New Haven to the late Milton Eugene and Bernice Eleanor (Hoyt) Vogt.

Marilyn grew up in Fair Haven and attended Wilbur Cross High School and graduated from Centenary University, formerly Centenary College for Women, in Hackettstown, N.J., Class of 1959.

Marilyn settled in North Branford in her early adult life with her beloved late husband, Pasquale R. Young. She supported him while he attended Yale Law School and his many endeavors, including starting their family. Prior to becoming a mother, Marilyn worked as a secretary at the FBI New Haven field office. Marilyn also gave back to the community by participating in local politics and proudly served as the registrar of voters for North Branford for many years. During her tenure as registrar, Marilyn formed many strong friendships, enjoyed socializing at cocktail parties, played card games, and planned many summer vacations to Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and the Poconos.

Besides having many friendships, Marilyn was an active bowler and participated in many bowling leagues at the former Cherry Hill Lanes in Branford. She also enjoyed her yearly visits to see the U.S. Open Tennis Championships in Flushing, N.Y., and was a fan of the New York Knicks.

Later in life, she resided in Madison with her beloved second late husband, Stephen John Slifka. Marilyn enjoyed many summer cookouts at the Madison Surf Club and loved walking and play-

ing with her prized dogs, Fritzie, Conrad, and Smoltzie. She frequently visited her local coffee spots and engaged in fun conversations, providing support and helpful advice to her friends, neighbors, and all who confided in her. Marilyn was never far from chasing the latest sales at Macy’s Department Store or TJ Maxx.

As Marilyn got older, she relished the simple joys of life—either having a slice of New Haven-style pizza, eating a jelly donut stick, getting her hair styled, or going to the movies. However, her utmost proudest achievement was being a forever loving and dedicated mother to her two daughters and a devoted grandmother to her granddaughter.

Marilyn is survived by her loving daughters, Mary Young (Paul) Criscuolo and Elizabeth Susan Young; her beloved granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Criscuolo, and her fiancé, Connor Odell, all from North Branford. She was predeceased by her two younger brothers, Donald (Crystal) Vogt and Keith (Maureen) Vogt, both from Guilford.

The family would like to extend a special appreciation for the extraordinary and compassionate care provided to Marilyn by her longtime doctor, Nancy Hurlburt, M.D., as well as the entire staff and volunteers at Connecticut Hospice.

Family and friends visited on July 25 at Keenan Funeral Home, 330 Notch Hill Road, North Branford. Funeral services were held on July 26 at the Keenan Funeral Home, with a funeral procession and eulogy at East Lawn Cemetery, 58 River Street, East Haven.

Patricia Guilloton-Laming (née Castaldy), of Killingworth, passed peacefully on July 19, 2025. Born in Cedarhurst, Long Island, N.Y., in 1937, she was the second child of 10 in an Irish/Italian family.

She spent happy summers in Atlantic Beach, homesteaded in Lance Creek, Wyo., for two years, and attended high school in Oxford, N.Y. Being a “forever learner,” Patricia pursued and attained her BA at NYU in 1981.

She fell in love with Manhattan thanks to her aunt, Patricia Divver, who was an editor for Time and Fortune Magazines.

In 1962, that love of Manhattan led to a 50-year career at New York University School of Law, where she held many positions, including director of placement of the LLM Division, director of LLM Alumni Relations, and director of LLM Alumni Development.

It was also in New York City where she met her first husband, Alain Guilloton, who was an advertising executive and linguist. They lived in Mexico City for two years. Alain passed away in

2004. Patricia married Alan Laming, a book publishing executive with whom she lived happily for 47 years between homes in New York, Florida, and Connecticut. They loved to travel and went to many interesting places around the world.

Patricia was a dedicated and valued member of Soroptimist International of NYC for more than 45 years. She served as president (1994-96) and NGO representative to the United Nations, attending conferences in Windsor, UK, and Istanbul. She became an accomplished botanical artist and studied with Olivia Braida-Chiusano.

She is survived by Alan and his children, Philip, Briony(Wilson) and Karen(Cote); and their children and grandchildren; and three stepchildren from her first marriage, Suzanne (Keifer), Jacques and André and their children and grandchildren; and her siblings: Tony, Al, Billy, Joe, Susan, Helen and their extended families.

On April 29, 2025, Ian Maxwell Roth, a longtime resident of Madison, and most recently, Bybee, Tenn., passed away at the age of 33.

He left us far too soon.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine L. (Katie) Sorell, the love of his life, formerly of Greenwich and recently of Bybee, Tenn.; his parents, John D. "Jack" and Judith Ann B. "Judy" Roth of Madison; his brother and sisterin-law, John D. "Jack" Roth Jr. and Amy E. Roth; and niece, Margot Ann Roth of New Haven; and his numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, of whom he adored. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs, Boudicca and Lucy, and cherished cat, Lola.

Ian was born Oct. 7, 1991, in Stamford. He grew up in Madison, attended Daniel Hand High School and graduated from Quinnipiac University with a B.A. in accounting, magna cum laude in 2016. That same year he was named a Beta Gamma Sigma inductee. He held positions at Federici Brands, PWC, Interactive Brokers and, most recently, as information protection senior man-

ager for The Cigna Group, where he won a company-wide management award.

He will be remembered for his intelligence, quick wit, infectious laugh and enthusiasm. He and Katie loved cooking and enjoying good food together, traveling, amusement parks and, of course, whiskey. He was always dabbling in something creative: candle making, blacksmithing, jewelry making, brewing and distilling, just to name a few. He had a passion for learning and enjoyed sharing his wealth of knowledge with others in the hope of finding ways to improve the world, himself and those around him.

We mourn the loss of Ian but celebrate the joy and laughter he brought to our lives.

He will be missed more than we can express but will forever live in our hearts.

Alfred Esposito Madison Alfred L. Esposito, age 85, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Aug. 14, 2025, after a long illness. Alfred was born on April 5, 1940, the son of Alfred L. Esposito and Marie P. Esposito.

He grew up in New Haven. Alfred graduated from Notre Dame High School in West Haven in 1958.

He went on to pursue a career as an educator, graduating from Southern Connecticut State College, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in education.

He later completed his master’s degree in education and earned a Sixth-Year certificate in student services (counseling).

In 1963, Alfred married the love of

his life, Marlene Costanzo Esposito.

During their nearly 62 years of marriage, Alfred and Marlene lived in Clinton, where they raised their family.

Mr. Esposito’s career in education spanned 35 years. In the early years, he taught elementary school in North Branford and Killingworth. He was a school counselor at East Lyme Middle School and Lyme-Old Lyme High School. Mr. Esposito created a workstudy program for inner-city teens with a daily reading requirement to work.

He piloted this program with the New Haven Redevelopment Agency, which he supervised in the summers. He led parent workshops for parenting skills, sibling rivalry, and communication skills. He was an active leader in the Shoreline school counselors’ professional organization.

Alfred was a kind person with a great

sense of humor. He enjoyed cooking dinners for his family, taking road trips with Marlene, and tending to his gardens. He will be missed forever.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Marlene; his children, Katherine Pothin (Timothy), Glen Esposito, and Brian Esposito; his brother, Robert Esposito; eleven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Anthony Esposito.

A memorial Mass to celebrate Alfred’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, at St. Margaret’s Church in Madison. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Clinton.

Susan Dressel Madison Susan Dressel, 86, of Madison, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Susan spent her formative years in Clinton, N.Y., where she met and married the love of her life, Thomas Patrick Dressel, who predeceased her in 2012. Tom and Susan were married for 55 years.

Susan, a born creative, led a very successful professional life as the owner of The Naples Lamp Shop in Naples, Fla., but her most important accomplishments were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandson. Susan was a loving mother to her four children: Jennifer Leslie (Michael), Naples, Fla.; Peter Dressel (Katie), Channahon, Ill.; Gretchen Matkin (Ryan), Madison; and Gregory Dressel (Jennifer).

Susan’s 10 precious grandchildren will forever remember their grandmother’s engaging and positive spirit

that lifted a room with joy and celebration: Patrick, Connor (predeceased), Meaghan, Maitland, Sarah, Zachary, Kyra, Caroline, Malachi, Rebekah, and Thomas. Susan was lucky enough to meet her great-grandson, Morgan, during her 85th birthday celebration, which brought her so much happiness.

In Susan’s retirement, her curious mind and love of learning entrenched her in many groups along the Shoreline where she created many friendships which she valued immensely.

It’s now our turn to open up this beautiful facility today and make our long-term commitment to Madison’s very bright future.”

Board of Education Chair Seth Klaskin expressed his enthusiasm for the new school and its role in Madison’s broader school facilities renewal plan—efforts he said “have been passions of mine for years.”

“It’s both gratifying and surreal to see them come to life,” he said.

Klaskin thanked town officials for their support in creating “the next generation of educational excellence,” and recognized state legislators Sen. Christine Cohen and Rep. John-Michael Parker—both in attendance—for their help securing reimbursement funding for the project.

“At the end of the day, this project says we care,” Klaskin said. “We care about our students, our educators, and our community’s future. We’ve invested in modern, safe, energy-efficient, and educationally appropriate schools, because that’s the Madison way.”

Sen. Cohen called the project a “promise to everybody’s future.” Rep. Parker, a graduate of Madison Public Schools and father of future Neck River students, said the school has personal meaning.

“The thought of having my children come to this school down the street is what’s making me feel just at awe about the commitment that the folks that made this building... what that commitment has done for our community,” said Parker.

Also speaking at the ceremony was Nick Conti, executive with the construction management firm overseeing the build. He credited the town’s New Elementary School Building Committee—particularly its chair, Graham Curtis—for making the

project a reality through countless hours of volunteer work.

Designed with sustainability and comfort in mind, the building supports 35 classrooms and can accommodate about 750 people during the school day. Peter Anderson, director of facilities for Madison Public Schools, said the heating and cooling systems are powered by geothermal energy.

“Since it’s capturing its energy from the ground, the only thing that it recognizes is 54 degrees,” Anderson said, referring to the steady groundwater temperature the system draws from. “The heating system never recognizes a day where the temperature is above or below 54 degrees.”

This allows the building’s internal temperature to remain consistent regardless of outdoor conditions. Additional features include air sealing systems to reduce energy loss and tile walls, which Anderson said are cleaner and more durable than traditional concrete.

Anderson also highlighted automation: “Every single classroom has the ability to control temperature within a design set point that I’m going to give the building,” he said. “I can globally set from my office, but the staff members in each and every room have the ability to fluctuate that temperature within a four-degree margin.

By doing that, it keeps the whole building very well balanced.”

Neck River Elementary will open its doors to students on the first day of school, Monday, Sept. 1, for the 2025–26 academic year. Principal Becky Frost and Assistant Principal Sherry Farmer expressed their excitement about the opening.

“To the whole town of Madison, thank you for your support and hard work to make this magic happen,” they told The Source. “We promise to take care of the building and the special people that will call this place home. We look forward to continuing to build on Madison’s excellent reputation for its schools and the education we provide our children. It is a job we do not take lightly.”

The temperature was hot, the humidity was high, and the pits were dry as Week 17’s games closed the chapter on the Deep River Horseshoe League’s 17th season.

As the season’s last week came to a close, the Cards defeated the Cubs and were crowned the league champions, the Marlins swept the Pirates and won all games by double-digits, the Red Sox moved up in the standings with a 5-1 win over the White Sox, Jeremy Davis and Paul Noel led the Dodgers to a 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks, and the Reds cruised past the Orioles 5-1. The playoff teams are set. All of the teams making the playoffs have been in the top eight of the standings since Week Eight.

Cards’ Kris Toohey started game one with six straight ringers, but Cubs’ Cody Layton was determined to not let Toohey outscore his team. Going into the 10th box, Layton led Toohey 2221, but Toohey outscored him 133. However, Cubs’ Paul Chrystal’s one point in the last box plus their handicap gave the Cubs the win. In game two, the Cubs held the lead for the first half of the game, but Toohey had three straight doubles to take the lead.

The Cubs fought back but came up one point short. The Cards won the next two games. In game five, Toohey only had one box where he did not have a ringer on his way to a game high 44 points.

Layton and Warren Bellows combined for 60 points to earn the Cubs the win. In game six, the lead went back and forth between the teams until Bellows’s double in the 11th box gave the Cubs a three-point lead, but the Cards used their handicap for another one-point win. The Cards won 4-2 and are the No.1 seed in the playoffs, while the Cubs fell to eighth in the standings and the No. 8 seed. The teams will meet again in round one of the playoffs. Too-

only managed two doubles. For the third time in four weeks, the Marlins scored over 300 points.

They scored 332 points, 77 ringers, and 11 doubles. They are the first team this season to win all 12 head-to-head matches, to win all their games by doubledigits, and have all players top the century mark. The Marlins had the night’s top scorers in the “B” and “C” division - Dennis Allen’s 122-point series topped

the “B” division, and Mike Beckwith’s 94-point series topped the “C” division score. The Marlins are the No. 6 seed, and the Pirates are the No. 5 seed.

In Week 14, Bill Beckwith’s Red Sox were in eighth place.

Their drive to make the playoffs has been sparked by Gerry Hines, whose 80-point series during this run is 20 points above his average. The Red Sox won the first four games. White Sox’s Brian

Walsh matched Beckwith’s 33 points in game one, and they needed Hines’s 20 points for the win. In game two, White Sox’s Brady Miller matched Beckwith’s 31 points, and this time, the Red Sox needed Anthony Malerba’s 21 points for the win. Big Win for New York Caps off a Bluefish Weekend Fishing report From a Category 4 to a tropical storm and finally out to sea, leaving in its wake leftover winds, Erin departed, causing fishers targeting bluefish to wonder.

Whether tournament bound or hooking into a bluefish for the fun of it, the one fish that exemplifies perseverance is the relentless, tenacious bluefish, or Pomatomus saltatrix. No matter where they are found throughout the world, their reputation as fierce, determined fighters follows them.

For whatever the reason, anglers have a love affair with striped bass. In our area, linesiders have a long history, going way back to colonial times.

They are survivors that have struggled to survive over the years and are a hardy, extremely adaptable fish.

But for a bluefish, it is the fight that draws in anglers. For its size, pound-for-pound, bluefish destroy more tackle, while fishers circle the wagons around raging feeding blitzes. It is what goes on below the surface that can be the start of a seemingly long session of pumping and stripping a hooked, weighty chopper. It then breaks the surface into famous acrobatics before sounding again.

Talk about an adrenaline rush!

The price for admission for this past weekend’s show was a ticket to the tournament. Although many fishers opted for local club tournaments, the $25,000 one did draw contenders despite the lingering threat of Erin’s path of influence. After the rain and wind subsided, two days of fishing, and, at the final bell, the unofficial results (pending validation) for the WICC Bluefish Tournament are: First Place $25,000, Zac Auer, NY (17.78); Second Place $7,500, Steven Divinetz, CT (17.16); Third Place $2.500, Rich DeFoe, CT (17.02); 20th Place $100, Andrew Ingargiola, NY (14.23); First Place (Under 18) $1,000, Colton Johnson, CT (14.48).

All in all, it was a nail-biting finish fraught with confusion over The Race now being included, the change in the eastern boundary extending into Block Island Sound, and the tournament rule stating near Orient Point. Plum Gut and The Race are two dis-

tinct passages into Long Island Sound. Unfortunately, the door has been opened for challenges. It would be a good idea to alter course, rethink the western boundary, and return to Collision Regulations (COLREGS) as the only boundary for future tournaments. At tournament’s end, the Leaderboard showed CT topping NY by CT (15)/NY (5). Kudos to Zac (NY) for capturing the top prize, and congratulations to all the ultimate winners! b

On The Water High pressure remained in control prior to Erin creeping up the coast before shifting to offshore and weakening. As it curved to the east, a weak frontal system approached as it passed well to the southeast, spinning off indirect impacts affecting the shoreline. High pressure returned followed by another cold front that approached from the west. Winds gusted to 30 knots with offshore waves occasionally reaching 20 feet, while in Long Island Sound, waves reached five feet or better before subsiding to around a foot. A period of rain and thunderstorms gave Connecticut a much needed bath, while the Sound’s water temperatures held to the mid-70s.

Fishers held their plans in abeyance until weather and water conditions played out before any recreational or competitive fishing decisions were finalized. Were baitfish and the seasonal fisheries going to hold ground, gravitate to the Sound, or seek the cover of deeper offshore water to avoid collisions with Erin’s effects? No doubt, those committed to fishing had to seek out the schools of fish once their normal spots had been tried.

Leading up to Erin, fishing proceeded normally for the end of August, with the exceptions being the air and water condition/temperature fluctuations sometimes the air swinging as much as 20 degrees or more within a day. Fortunately for the

fishery, average marine temperatures fluctuated only by a few degrees - lower tidal rivers slightly more.

Since the bottom fishery is generally a hardy bunch, a difference in activity was hardly perceptible.

What did make an impact was the increase in dogfish, sand sharks, stingrays, and skate schools prowling the sea bottom for food. Noticeably, more of these species were caught over this past week from shore as well as by boat fishers. Sizes were all over the spectrum from fun catches to fishers that got towed around, and a few that either lost gear or had reels burn out, as some of the bigger fish could not be stopped even with 4/0 Senator-class reels or heavier using 65-pound braid.

Good blackfish continue to be caught as their summer season winds down. From the jetties to the rock piles, these bulldogs of the sea have been putting up a show, although they have laid back and sought protective cover on windy tides. Anglers’ main competition have been harbor seals! Porgy remain a mainstay and a popular seasonal fish to catch. Squid, seaworms, and scented strip baits are catching the most scup, however, their competition of late has been aggressive spot croaker. Both are good eats and put up a fuss on light setups. Fluke at 19.5” remain a challenge due to the number of shorts being attracted.

When setting up a drift on a vessel, large baits, when fished with a scented teaser rigged above, has been the added touch to get a mini-doormat to make a move.

Land-based enhancement areas are not as much of an issue since the size limit there is 17”.

If the weather holds, most effort will be focused on bluefish.

It is tournament time! Bigger choppers have been staged and are feeding further east with schools of smaller fish caught within sight of Faulkner’s Island.

They have been in channels, deep drop-offs, and moving water, as baitfish have been pushed in and drawn out of the shallows. Somewhere between diamond jigging, trolling, and chunking, a ranking bluefish will be caught. Weakfish, in all probability, will continue to

be caught in the mix as they recently have been.

If it is striped bass that has caught your attention, then be prepared for a mix of sizes that you will have to chase as schools of baitfish (small bunker to peanuts) keep moving. Cow bass and smaller can be caught/released on live eels, chunks, and some topwaters.

Parachute rigs and Mojos for deep water have been productive as well as the ever-popular diamond jig. Pre-storm influence sharpened up feeding - though, intermittently. Lower tidal rivers have had their moments both with light gear and fly rods.

Three notable prongs of inland freshwater fishing lately are the basses, panfish, and catfish.

There are plenty more, but for August, this trio captures much of the action.

Except for a few rainy spells, blue crabbing has been over the top - more than enough for a family backyard crab fest - including softies. Good results from hand lining, scooping, and trapping continues. Clammers have also had a good stretch of decent tides

and weather, for now.

The Red Sox climbed to fourth place in the standings and are the No. 4 seed. Beckwith’s 131-point series was the third leading “A” division score, and this was only the second time this season where he scored all four games in the 30s.

For the second week in a row, the Rangers’ scoring woes continued, and it also affected the Yankees. The Rangers’ 219 points were only five points better than last week, and their 30 ringers were the fewest of the season. For the Yankees, Paul Stevens has been their leading scorer in three of the last four weeks. In game one, Stevens’ back-to-back doubles at the end of the game sealed the win. The Rangers were the only players to top 20 points in game two for the win. Stevens’s second game with back-to-back doubles led them to their second win in game three.

The Rangers won game four by three points on Heery’s ringer in the last box and their handicap. The Yankees won the last two games and the match 4-2. The Yankees are the No. 3 seed, while the Rangers, who are the only playoff team not to have scored 300 points, are the No. 7 seed.

Sheryl Serviss’s Tigers still hoped for a playoff spot, but it would take a big win against Frank Rausch’s Braves. Tigers’ Ray Smith kept their hopes alive in game one, as he had a personal best game of 31 points, nine ringers, and a double, as he combined with Serviss’s 32 points to lead to an easy win. In game two, the Braves managed to overcome the handicap for a two-point win and then followed it up by winning the next two, thereby ending the Tigers’ chances to make the playoffs.

Serviss and Harvey Strausser both had their best games, combining for 61 points in game five for a double-digit win. The Tigers won the last game and split the match. The Braves are the No. 2 seed.

Rausch’s 143-point series was the second leading “A” score, and Peter Furmonavicius’s 105-point series was the second leading “B” score. Smith’s personal best series of 92 points was the top “C” division score.

Kyle Sunderland substituted for Orioles’ Adam Fortier. The teams split the first two games and then the Reds went on to win the final four. The Reds finished the season with 51 wins and 51 losses. Reds’ Chip Goodrich had his second game in a row topping the century mark, and Reds’ John O’Brien’s season high 89-point series was the third leading “C” scorer. The Orioles

continued their streak of losing on odd numbered games.

Paul Noel substituted for Dodgers’ Ed Turner. Dodgers’ Jeremy Davis started game one on his way to tying his season best series of 124 points with a 38-point game for their first win. Diamondbacks’ Mike Zanelli Jr. responded in game two with a 39-point game to tie the match. The Dodgers used their handicap to break the tie and win game three. The Dodgers went on to win the final three games. In the head-to-head match of Davis vs. Zanelli Jr., they went 2-2, and Zanelli Jr. outscored Davis 130-124. Noel’s 102-point series was his personal best, which included 33 points in game six.

Rockies’ Damin Roberts is known for his slow starts, but in game one, Roberts had his season best game of 38 points, leading to the win over Mark Goodale’s Mets. The Mets won the next two games before the Rockies behind Roberts’s 32 points won game four. The Mets finished their season by winning the last two games. Mets’ Mike Shashok’s 102-point series was his second best of the season. Roberts’s 118-point series was his season’s best.

With the score tied after 12 boxes, Mike Zanelli Sr.’s Giants used their handicap to win game one by three points over Tony Cutone’s Angels. Giants’ Frank Jolly led the team to wins in the next two games, and in the following two games, Cutone scored 30+points in both for the Angels’ two wins in the match. The Giants won the last game by three points using their handicap, and the Giants won 4-2.

Toohey was the “A” division’s leading scorer in points, ringers, and doubles. Furmonavicius was the “B” division leading scorer in points and ringers, while Allen scored the most doubles. For the “C” division, Anthony Conkling was the leading scorer in all three categories.

Back-to-School Made Simple Smart Lunches, Safer Snacks Staff Report

The first week back at school can make even the most organized households feel like they’re running late. Between early alarms, after-school activities, and rising grocery costs, packing a healthy lunch every day may feel overwhelming. The good news? Experts say keeping kids fueled doesn’t require chef skills or expensive ingredients — just a few smart strategies. b

Safety First: Keep Lunches Out of the “Danger Zone” When it comes to lunch, food safety is just as important as nutrition. UConn Extension notes that bacteria grow rapidly between 40 and 140 degrees — the “danger zone” — and perishable foods shouldn’t stay there for more than two hours, or just one hour if it’s 90 degrees or hotter.

Experts recommend refrigerating food before packing, using insulated carriers, and freezing a yogurt or water bottle overnight so it keeps everything cool until lunch.

Whole-grain pasta with zucchini and Parmesan offers a quick, nutritious option for a school lunch or weeknight meal.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate guidance suggests filling half a lunchbox with fruits and vegetables, and dividing the other half between grains and protein, with room for dairy or fortified soy alternatives.

Combining food groups makes snacks more satisfying, like pairing apple slices with nut butter, or whole-grain crackers with turkey and avocado.

Colorful, crunchy vegetables also make a big impact. Broccoli, carrots, or zucchini sticks become more appealing when served with hummus, guacamole, or yogurt dip.

“Healthy snacks don’t have to be complicated,” said Stacy Chandna, MS, CIP, with Connecticut Children’s. She suggests easy pairings such as fruit with cheese, raw veggies with hummus, or a simple yogurt parfait.

Prepping ahead — slicing vegetables, portioning dips, or boiling eggs for the week — can reduce the morning scramble, she added.

Beth Chatfield, MS, RD, a registered dietitian at Connecticut Children’s, emphasized keeping food both safe and fun.

“An ice pack or a frozen water bottle keeps food cold and safe — and gives kids a slushy drink by lunchtime,” she said.

Chatfield also recommends thinking outside the box: cold pasta salad with lean protein and veggies, wraps with chicken Caesar or lean turkey, fruit and cheese plates with whole-grain crackers, muffins baked ahead and frozen for easy grab-and-go, and even leftover fried rice, packed cold, as a satisfying change.

“Kids like to dunk,” Chatfield added. “Including healthy dips with vegetables or finger foods keeps lunch interesting.”

The First Congregational Church of Madison will welcome the legendary Tommy Dorsey Orchestra for a special performance on Friday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. as part of its Music at the Meetinghouse concert series.

Known as “The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing,” Tommy Dorsey was a defining figure of the Big Band era. Today, the orchestra that bears his name continues to bring the unforgettable sound of the Swing Era to audiences around the world.

The concert will take place at the First Congregational Church, 26 Meetinghouse Lane in Madison.

Two Events Highlight CT Freedom Trail Month Press Release from the New Haven Museum

The New Haven Museum (NHM) will celebrate Connecticut Freedom Trail Month with two free events focused on the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman. The programs, tailored for both adults and children, will take place on Thursday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025.

On Thursday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m., Deirdre Cooper Owens, professor of history and Africana studies at the University of Connecticut, will present a lecture titled “Harriet Tubman: A Disabled American Hero.” The evening will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Cooper Owens will explore Tubman’s life through the lens of disability, examining how her experiences with narcolepsy, sleeping fits, and hallucinations shaped her leadership and the perceptions of those around her.

“Although there are numerous biographies about Harriet Tubman’s life, none of them delve into her disabilities and how her conditions impacted her decision-making and life,” says Cooper Owens. She will also discuss how Tubman’s identity—Black, female, enslaved, and disabled—intersected with her activism and philanthropy. This lecture is part of NH250, New Haven Museum’s series of events aligned with the national America 250 initiative. Registration is required at newhavenmuseum.org.

The second event, on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m., invites children and families to experience Tubman’s story through an interactive storytelling session led by author and educator Yvette Cole. Based on her children’s book Harriet’s Dinner Party, the multimedia program invites young audiences to explore history with all five senses, featuring a video story time, music, themed props, and sing-alongs.

In Cole’s imaginative tale, a young girl dines at Harriet Tubman’s home alongside historical guests like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Ida B. Wells.

The program concludes with a themed activity, book signing, and photo opportunity with the author. Cole, a Connecticut kindergarten teacher and first-time author, wrote the book to help fill the gap in accessible history resources for young children. “I wanted to help fill that gap by focusing on figures like Harriet Tubman, whose legacy deserves to be shared and celebrated with every generation,” she says.

Madison Lyric Stage Presents an Evening of Suspense, Music and Murder Press Release from Madison Lyric Stage

Madison Lyric Stage, a professional theater company on the Connecticut shoreline, will present Four Murders in Forty Years, an original evening of suspenseful music and operatic drama, from Sept. 19 to 21. The production weaves together a haunting series of vignettes centered on the lives of individuals inhabiting the same tenement apartment across four decades.

The evening features the English-language presentation of two dramatic oneact operas: The Medium by Gian Carlo Menotti and La Voix Humaine (The Human Voice) by Francis Poulenc and Jean Cocteau, among additional operatic excerpts. Each piece represents a different decade in the apartment’s turbulent history, revealing moments of grief, betrayal, obsession—and murder.

In The Medium, a fraudulent psychic, Madame Flora, manipulates her clients’ grief for profit—until a real supernatural event throws her into madness. In The Human Voice, a woman named Elle is unraveling on the telephone, clinging to a toxic love as her emotional world crumbles.
