Town Removes Flock License Plate Readers

As of the beginning of August, the Town of Killingworth has removed its Flock license plate reader cameras, citing residents’ concerns about data privacy, according to First Selectman Eric Couture.

Speaking with The Source, Couture said there was an initial understanding when the town purchased the cameras as part of its

2025-26 budget that “we had assurances that the data was ours, and that if you set up the parameters correctly, then nobody else would have access to it without your permission.”

However, reports from municipalities around the country raising privacy concerns about Flock cameras “indicated that that may not necessarily be the case” when it came to protecting residents’ privacy, Couture said.

Killingworth residents made their concerns clear to the first selectman, who said he was contacted directly by several residents.

While he initially tried to allay those concerns, “it became harder and harder as more stories came out” regarding data privacy, he said.

Dawn Jackson: Connecting the Shoreline

In the office of the Madison Chamber of Commerce sits a meticulously drawn-out timetable on a whiteboard, outlining the dates and times for Executive Director Dawn Jackson to meet with current and new members of the nonprofit. This represents how Dawn likes to approach meeting with the 400 clients of the Chamber of Commerce across the shoreline: utilizing her background in marketing to be very logistical and methodical to ultimately help strengthen ties among the business community, nonprofits, and the residents they serve.

Under Dawn’s leadership approach, she says the chamber has seen a 20% increase in the number of members. She notes, however, that such an accomplishment wasn’t necessarily the goal when she assumed the executive director’s role three years ago.

“My goal wasn’t to come in here and go, yes, we’re going to skyrocket, and our goal was never to be one of the larger regional chambers,” she

of the Week says. “I think it’s important that we keep a focus on our community, and although we have businesses from other communities or and nonprofits, they’re coming here to engage because of what we offer.”

When it comes to promoting shoreline businesses or nonprofits, Dawn finds it important to be accessible, flexible, and very organized. The latter is not too difficult for her — she has a background in marketing, where organization is critical — but being visible to the shoreline community is just as important. Dawn says she has an “open-door” approach to her leadership, not just because of the hundreds of visitors the chamber expects annually, but also demonstrated through her accessibility and the numerous community events pro-

vided for businesses to become more familiar with the public.

“We provide opportunities for businesses to come out and directly engage on a consumer level, and that’s what is really rewarding for a lot of businesses: that face-to-face interaction,” says Dawn. “We have merchant meetings that are quarterly. We bring our merchants together to have them engage and talk about what we are doing to promote the businesses [and] the community, for visitors and residents to come out and engage.”

Dawn has also created a “bridge” between the chamber and other nonprofits, like its next-door neighbors, the Madison Historical Society and E.C. Memorial Scranton Library.

Among the 400 members of the chamber — 90 of which are nonprofits — there are strong connections to be made in order to bring multiple shoreline communities closer, a mission that is a “major part of the chamber,” says Dawn.

After reviewing the proposed Affordable Housing Trust Fund ordinance, I was reminded of comments made by Selectman Scott Murphy during a recent Board of Selectmen meeting. He said Madison should “be bold” and described the Affordable Housing Trust Fund as an opportunity to help people in need. He also stated that this was “not playing any games with taxpayer money” and that it was about opportunities for donations.

The ordinance itself, however, is what matters. It specifically lists municipal appropriations as a funding source, meaning local taxpayer dollars may be

deposited into the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. It also authorizes funding from building permit fees, grants, loans, state and federal funds, and donations.

Donations are just one of several possible funding sources.

If the intent is truly to rely only on grants and private donations, the ordinance should expressly limit the fund to those sources. As written, it does not.

Madison residents deserve complete transparency about where the money may come from and how it may be spent before this ordinance is adopted.

Thank you to Aaron Rubin for his article (”Public Hearing Set on Housing Fund,” Aug. 6) highlighting the proposed Affordable Housing Trust Fund and the public meeting on Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall. Creating affordable housing is an important issue for many in Madison, and the Affordable Housing Committee strongly believes that establishing an Affordable Housing Trust Fund is a responsible and effective way to promote this goal.

The article generally highlights the current issues well; however, I want to clarify a few points. To qualify for “affordable housing” in Madison, one must make less than 80% of the area median income, and the cost of housing cannot exceed 30% of a person’s gross income. In Madison, that means a single person qualifies if they make less than

$70,000, and a family of four qualifies if they earn less than $100,000. The average price of a home in Madison is $725,000. Without a plan to encourage and create affordable housing options, the numbers simply do not work for many people.

The Affordable Housing Committee supports the establishment of a trust fund to encourage and assist creation of responsible and effective affordable housing options for people who work in Madison (whether as town employees or with private employers); young people looking to move to Madison (many of whom were raised here); and seniors who need intentionally designed housing options. We encourage interested residents to attend the Aug. 24 meeting.

New Genealogy Tool The Killingworth Library announces it is now a FamilySearch affiliate library, which means it has access to more genealogy resources to help guests make more family discoveries. FamilySearch is a web service that has over six billion searchable names and two billion images of historical genealogical records. It adds over 300 million free genealogical records and images online yearly from all over the world. It has amassed billions of birth, marriage, death, census, land, and court records from more than 130 countries to help patrons discover and make family connections. The database is only available in-person at the Killingworth Library, 301 Route 81, with any of its public access computers. parties beyond local law enforcement did not have access to information collected by the cameras, making “those data privacy concerns about who’s actually looking for that information ... harder to allay,” he said.

Additionally, “the fact that they didn’t help solve any crimes in Killingworth,” Couture said, raised further questions about the cameras’ effectiveness. While Flock cameras may have had a preventative effect, “that’s harder to prove,” he said.

The primary concern for law enforcement in Killingworth is speeding, something Flock cameras did not prevent and for which the town will continue to rely on its resident state trooper.

The Flock cameras were installed in September after being recommended by the Connecticut State Police. They were

ultimately approved in Killingworth as a cost-saving alternative to adding a second resident state trooper position previously considered by the town, Couture said, and to assist state law enforcement.

The first selectman said he consulted with both the resident state trooper and representatives from Flock “to do due diligence on some of those data privacy concerns that we had” before the cameras were installed. “[Flock] was already the vendor chosen by the state police. So that sort of peer-topeer connection made sense,” Couture said.

Because the town was not required by the state to use the Flock cameras, officials were able to disable and remove them.

Killingworth will have to pay Flock a fee for ending the program, although the amount has not yet been determined, Couture said.

Going forward, the town will rely on its resident state trooper to address speeding concerns. Because speeding violations typically occur at night, the town will make greater use of the overtime line item in its public safety budget.

“The resident state trooper program is working. So if we use more of our overtime budget to do speed enforcement, I think that will go a long way,” Couture said.

Killingworth is not the only Connecticut municipality — or shoreline town — to reconsider using Flock cameras. Other communities are also considering discontinuing the program because of many of the same privacy concerns raised by Killingworth residents.

“I think there’s a lot of pressure to stop using these systems just from the public,” Couture said.

Polson Upgrades on Track for School Opening

There is an “absolute flurry of activity” occurring at Walter C. Polson Middle School at the moment, said Madison’s construction manager Ben Whittaker, with several school system upgrades taking shape, most of which are on track to be completed by the first day of school for Madison students Aug. 27.

Even a few days earlier — specifically Aug. 24, when staff return to all Madison Public Schools buildings — systems such as the 43 new penthouse HVAC units providing heating and cooling to Polson will be online, Whittaker said. This and other scheduled upgrades were confirmed by Whittaker at a School Building HVAC Committee Polson/Hand meeting Aug. 4.

They are estimated by the school district to total $15.4 million, an amount that “is well within the $18.2 we budgeted for,” Whittaker said.

He said it has been a “monumental task” having the units installed on the

building within an eight-week timespan, and a priority project that was necessary to complete before the beginning of the school year.

According to the school district, the new penthouse HVAC systems will replace end-of-life units and provide energy-efficient cooling to 24 classrooms and other instructional spaces that previously lacked cooling. The systems are expected to bring air conditioning throughout the building, including the auditorium.

Regarding the auditorium, Whittaker was pleased to inform the committee that abatement work was completed last month, and the room in Polson is now a “clean slate.” The work also revealed that the school district has been able to save some of the ceiling framing in the auditorium, “so we won’t have to reframe the entire ceiling like we feared we may have had to see,” Whittaker added.

Progress still needs to be made in the auditorium, which the school district said is undergoing a “full-scale renovation” that has included abatement, a new ceiling,

updated house lighting, theatrical lighting and sound, and new seating. Because of the remaining work, the auditorium will remain closed until the end of 2026. Activities normally taking place in the auditorium, such as assemblies, will occur inside the school’s auxiliary gymnasium instead.

As for the main gymnasium, it will also be offline for part of the year, specifically until after the end of November. Currently, the school district is awaiting new bleachers to install, which are expected to arrive in October.

The interior work in the building is “nearing completion,” and electrical upgrades are also coming online for the new school year, Whittaker said. As previously reported in The Source, a generator and switchboard are incoming for Polson, and half of the associated labor is being financed by $1.5 million in state and federal grant monies, which the town will match.

Other improvements scheduled to be delivered to the school include upgrades to the band room and the weight room.

Committee member Galen Cawley asked Whittaker if he anticipates “any bottleneck or possible delay” in the work before the first day of school. Both Whittaker and Carl Anderson, a representative from the district’s construction vendor Gilbane Company, said they do not expect any delays.

Anderson said, “We’ve been actively tracking every material that we have…and everything that we need for the school to start up is in hand at this point.

We’re actively tracking all of the controls and communications within the systems, and how they are being installed.”

The work that took place at Polson this summer is designated as “Year 1 Projects” and is part of a four-year effort that will include other work such as roof replacement and asbestos abatement. As the Year 1 Projects wound up falling under budget by $2.8 million, Whittaker said the remaining funds will go toward the roof replacement project, which is anticipated to begin construction in the summer of 2028.

Dawn first became familiar with the Madison Chamber of Commerce while working at the Women and Family Life Center in Guilford. She was enlightened by the chamber-sponsored community events in which the Women and Family Life Center participated, ensuring that such occasions were essential to the chamber’s mission. To support this, she’ll host a roundtable at Scranton once or twice a year to engage with nonprofits and ask them how she can be of support.

“Also, having the nonprofits connect and say, ‘I need a vendor who does this,’ or ‘We’re doing this. I have an obstacle with a database. What are you using? Does anybody have a nonprofit attorney or accountant?’ These are the conversations that come and go throughout getting a bunch of people in a room of the like-minded business — which nonprofits are — and talking and people get a lot out of it,” she says.

But Dawn is not alone in realizing suc-

cess for both the chamber and those it supports. She credits its “very engaged board” for its important role in evaluating the success of events and assessing how to continuously do better to “keep things moving along and operationally keep consistency going.”

Dawn and the board do not lose sight of the most important part of their role, which comes down to “building relationships.”

“Whether you’re a business coming to a networking event, or it’s myself working with the library to have Santa come to the front of the library for hundreds of families to meet him and sit with him, that’s exciting,” she says. “It’s your relationship, and giving thanks. I think there’s power in a thank you note. I think there’s power in being just a good reciprocal friend back, promoting their events, and supporting our initiatives.”

And for as elaborate as her work can be and the networking with which to keep up, it is those aspects of the role that Dawn has enjoyed during her three years as executive director.

“It’s a busy job, but it really makes life go by. It’s not stagnant. I love it. It’s an energetic, engaging role.”

Madison Little League Makes Run to State Final Four

The Madison Little League Majors softball team recently completed an impressive end-of-season Little League International tournament run that saw the team finish as one of the final four teams in the state.

Madison won the District 9 title by defeating Middletown, 5-1, on June 24.

The district champion then advanced to sectionals, where the top two teams moved on to the state tournament. Sectionals were hosted in Stafford Springs, and Madison defeated Brooklyn, Manchester and SFC/Preston on its way to finishing as runner-up behind East Lyme.

At the state tournament, Madison competed in Waterford in a double-elimination format. The team ultimately fell to Bristol, 11-1, and Fairfield, 9-0, to conclude its postseason run. Bristol went on to win regionals and advance to the Little League World Series in Greenville, North Carolina.

The Madison roster included Shea Oliveira, Sarah Rosenthal, Ryan Macellaro, Genevieve Tomas, Alissa Aguzzi, Lauren Marro, Arabella Holmes, Stella Darling, Briannah Macinnis, Arabella Bernier and Lisa Acquarulo.

The team was led by manager Michael Marro and assistant coaches Tara Marro and Rhianna Kaminsky.

Tara Marro spoke highly of her players and how well they performed throughout the season. She said the coaches knew going into the season that they would have a talented squad capable of competing at a high level.

“We had an outstanding season. We had 11 girls try out, so we took all 11 and we knew we had a good team going in. We were really excited,” Tara Marro said.

“Obviously, our goal was to win districts, and we did, so everything after that was just an amazing experience for them. We played some seriously hard competition throughout the process.”

The husband-and-wife coaching duo also gave plenty of credit to the parents and community for supporting the players throughout a demanding postseason, particularly when the team had to make the hour-and-a-half drive to Stafford Springs

for five consecutive days.

“The kids can have the want to do it and have the ability, but if the parents don’t buy in, you’re really in a tough position to succeed,” Michael Marro said. “It’s a real community effort.”

What separated Madison from the rest of the district and helped the team become one of the final four remaining in the state was its attention to detail, talent, dedication, versatility and familiarity with one another.

The all-star team, which combined the top players from the two teams in Madison, knew the pieces it needed heading

into the postseason after many of the players had spent the past few years playing together.

With most of the team only 11 years old, Madison battled against 12- and 13-yearolds throughout the season and held its own in the postseason. The competition became even tougher as the tournament progressed, including facing opponents throwing pitches at speeds of 50 mph.

With the season now in the books, the players and coaches are already looking toward next season and putting in the work they hope will lead to Madison representing the state at regionals.

“We return nine players out of 11. We return both our pitchers, which we have two excellent frontline pitchers. At this point of the game, the pitchers are essential,” Michael Marro said. “It was apparent that there were some things that experience and refining our outfield and really defensively getting ourselves to the point where once you get past sectionals, there’s no room for errors and mistakes.”

With nine of its 11 players expected to return, Madison Little League will look to build on this year’s tournament run next season.

Giants Pull Within One Game of First

For the second week in a row, mild temperatures in the mid-80s and low humidity made for another top-10 night. As the sun started to set, it felt more like early May than July, and several non-players wished they had brought a jacket or fleece. Also, for another week, the league needed 10 substitutes. Nine spots were filled, leaving one team to use a blind score for its absent player.

With six players topping the century mark, compared with the usual two, the B Division average series rose to 88 points from last week’s 81.

Of the top six teams in the standings, the Giants’ 4-2 win over the Cubs pulled them within one game of first place. Despite the losses, no team changed position in the standings. The Tigers defeated the Rockies, 4-2, on the strength of Dennis Goodrich’s personal-best 117-point series; the D’backs’ 299 points stopped the first-place White Sox, 4-2; the Angels took advantage of a Braves team without Frank Rausch for the third week in a row and won, 4½-1½; and the Orioles moved back into seventh place with a 4-2 win over the Pirates.

Peter Furmonavicius substituted for Cubs player Bob Cifaldi, and Evan Pierce substituted for Adam Fortier of the Giants. With the game tied after 10 boxes, the Cubs’ Furmonavicius and Peter Lessard outscored the Giants, 98, for a one-point win in game one. Giants players Mike Zanelli Sr. and Matt Valentin won the next two games, combining for 64 points in game two and using their handicap for the second win.

Lessard and Furmonavicius won game four by overcoming the handicap. The Cubs had a chance to win game five, but despite leading by two points going into the last box, their failure to score gave the Giants a one-point win.

Valentin’s best game was the last of the night. His 38 points gave the Giants their fourth win.

Zanelli’s season-best 142-point series and Valentin’s season-best 114-point series were the secondleading scores in the A and B divisions, respectively. Lessard’s

season-best 96-point series was the second-leading score in the C Division.

After sitting on the sidelines the last two weeks, Brady Miller has seen his White Sox’s fivegame lead slowly slip away, while John Sciacca’s D’backs have stayed within a half-game of a playoff spot. Tanner Steeves substituted for White Sox player Kyle Wilson. To start the match, Miller and Steeves, using new shoes, had trouble scoring. They were behind by eight points after four boxes and never recovered.

In game two, both Miller and Bob Beckwith had their worst games of the season. Beckwith found his stroke for 32 points to give the White Sox a win in the third game, and Miller and Steeves evened the match by winning the fourth. Sciacca’s 28 points gave the D’backs their third win as Butch Carotenuto and Beckwith each had 30-point games. D’backs player John O’Brien matched his season-best game with 32 points in the finale for a double-digit win. The D’backs remain a halfgame out of a playoff spot. Their 299 points were the top team score of the night. White Sox player Beckwith’s 115-point series was the top B Division score. Carotenuto’s 95-point series was his best of the season.

The Rockies’ match against the Tigers featured the league’s top two women: Sue Pollard and Sheryl Serviss. However, they became secondary as Tigers player Dennis Goodrich outscored the Rockies, 42-41, in the first game. His 42 points, 10 ringers and three doubles were personal bests. He ended the night as the top C Division scorer and ranked in the top three in five of six C Division statistical categories.

Matt Mule, substituting for Tigers player Anthony Conkling, gave the Tigers additional handicap points, which they used to win the next two games. In the second game, the Rockies came within two points of tying going into the last box, but both teams scored only one point. Game three was tied after 10 boxes, but the Rockies were outscored 5-2. After surrendering another win to the Tigers, the Rockies finished the night by overcoming double-digit handicaps to win the final two

games. In their head-to-head match, Serviss scored 114 points to Pollard’s 110. Rockies player Anthony Malerba’s 94-point series was the third-leading C Division score. Despite the loss, the Rockies remained in fifth place.

This week, Angels player Tony Cutone tried to outscore Braves player Frank Rausch’s 128-point blind score. Frank Durinick substituted for Angels player Ed Turner. Braves player Gary Haney scored four points in the last box, and game one ended in a tie. The Angels won the next four games: They used the handicap to win game two by five points, won game three by five points, got 36 points from Cutone for a seven-point win in game four, and had Durinick and Cutone combine for 63 points to win game five. The Braves squeaked out a two-point win in the finale by outscoring the Angels, 9-5, in the last two boxes. Cutone made it close, but the blind score won, 128-120. With the win, the Angels are considered a bubble team. The Braves are five games behind first place.

The team scores between Mike Zanelli Jr.’s Orioles and Skip Robinson’s Pirates were separated by only four points, and each team had one of the six B players who topped the century mark with season-best series.

Game one was decided in the last box. It was 5-2 in favor of the Pirates, but the Orioles won on handicap. In the first A/B game, Pirates players Brian Walsh and Robinson each scored 32 points for their first win. Orioles player Andy Turshen led the scoring in the third game. Zanelli bested Robinson in the fourth game, 3123, and in the second A/B game, Orioles player Ted Dubay tossed 30 points, stopping the Pirates’ chance of winning the match. Fittingly, the last game featured Dubay and Walsh again, and it came down to the last box. The Orioles did not score, and Walsh edged Dubay, 29-26. The Pirates won by three points. Walsh finished with 109 points to Dubay’s 101, while Zanelli scored 106 to Robinson’s 90. The Orioles finished with 273 points, 59 ringers and eight doubles, while the Pirates had 277 points, 57 ringers

and six doubles. With the 4-2 win, the Orioles moved back into seventh place while the Pirates remained in fourth.

The final team scores were Rangers 269, Marlins 267, in one of the few matches in which a game was not decided by handicap. Cody Layton substituted for Marlins player John Hutra, and Emily Taylor replaced Rangers player Gerry Hines, who has moved to the injured reserve list.

It looked like a runaway for the Marlins, who won the first two games by five points each and seemed to add security to their playoff spot. However, the Rangers quickly dashed those hopes by winning the next three games. While the A players are noted for their accuracy, Marlins B player Mike Shashok tossed three clean games and had only one open box. In the last game of the night, his third clean game gave the Marlins a split. Taylor had a season-best game of 21 points, and Leif Selander’s 86point series was his season best.

The Marlins slipped back into eighth place.

As expected, Cards player Kris Toohey started the match with eight ringers in the first six boxes and finished with 47 points and 13 ringers against Chip Goodrich’s Reds. Andy Konefal and Goodrich kept it close and used their three handicap points to win by two. Chip’s brother Pudge replaced Joe Heery, who has moved to the injured reserve list.

In both A/B games, the brothers had a 14-point handicap advantage, but the scoring duo of Toohey and Todd Nuhn won both games by double digits. The Reds won the other three games: They used their handicap to squeak out a one-point win in game three, earned a four-point win in game four and pulled off a double-digit win in the finale. Both C players for the Red Sox and Mets were substitutes: Bob Thomas, in his second match, for Red Sox player Jim Weselcouch, and Keith Toohey for Mets player Deb Scully. When the Red Sox played the Mets in baseball earlier this month, the Red Sox swept the three-game series.

Tonight, it was the league’s No. 6 and No. 7 scorers: Mark Goodale vs. Bill Beckwith. Goodale started with two 35-point games, with one win and one loss. The Red Sox used their handicap in game two for a one-point win and followed with another win, using their handicap for a two-point victory. The Mets tied the match with a win, but the Red Sox won the last two games. The Red Sox won the fifth game by more than 25 points as Beckwith had 39 points and Paul Stevens had 36.

Mets player Harvey Strausser’s best game of 28 points went for naught, as Stevens’ 26 points plus the handicap gave the Red Sox a one-point win. Stevens was one of the six B players to top the century mark with a season-best 101 points. Goodale went 3-1 against Beckwith, but Beckwith finished with 125 points and Goodale had 124. They were the No. 3 and No. 4 scorers in the A Division. With the 4-2 win, the Red Sox remained in last place.

Damin Roberts substituted for Yankees player Dennis Allen as they faced Jeremy Davis’s Dodgers. The Yankees won the first two games with the benefit of the handicap, taking game one by one point and game two by two points. The Yankees struggled to score the rest of the match, and the Dodgers swept the remaining four games.

More Than a Market Vintage Bazaar New England’s Mystic Seaport debut is a story of family history, preservation, and the century-old steamboat Sabino.

What began with a visit by a few curious guests has led to Vintage Bazaar New England coming to Mystic Seaport Museum for a two-day event Saturday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug. 16.

For more than a decade, Vintage Bazaar New England has brought together vintage and antique collectors, artists, makers, and small businesses at events across New England. On Aug. 15-16, the market will make its first appearance at Mystic Seaport Museum.

Before inviting Vintage Bazaar to the museum, members of Mystic Seaport Museum’s leadership team attended the October 2025 festival in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Without revealing who they were or why they were there, they spent more than five hours exploring the vendor tents, listening to live music, and experiencing the market as visitors.

Museum officials later invited founder Devon Chouinard to bring the event to the museum’s waterfront campus.

“We had no idea they were there,” Chouinard said. “I was incredibly honored when I learned that they wanted to bring our market to the museum.”

The invitation also revealed an unexpected connection. At the time of their visit, museum leaders did not know that one of Mystic Seaport Museum’s bestknown historic vessels had once belonged to Chouinard’s family.

Chouinard is a fourth-generation picker and antiquarian whose interest in preserving the past began long before Vintage Bazaar was founded. Her greatgrandfather, Capt. Phillip Corbin, was a collector who spent much of his life rescuing overlooked objects during his travels

Senior Cast to Bring The Music Man to Clinton Stage Press Release from Clinton Senior Connection and Shoreline Theater Academy Kidz Konnection

Clinton Senior Connection and Shoreline Theater Academy Kidz Konnection have joined forces to present an all-senior production of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man on Friday, Aug. 28, at Andrews Memorial Town Hall.

The production marks the debut of a new senior musical theater initiative created by Clinton Senior Connection and Shoreline Theater Academy Kidz Konnection, known as STAKK. Organizers say the program is designed to bring older adults together through theater while strengthening community connections.

“With very little promotion, this show is already almost sold out,” said Christina Acampora, Clinton’s senior program director and the show’s producer. “That’s close to 300 tickets, and we are still more than a month away from show night. I think that speaks volumes to what people in the community want to see and are excited to come out and support. That response from the community is just so empowering for our town’s older adults.”

The production is under the musical direction of Leila Mustakos, who recently retired from Clinton Public Schools. Peter Nye stars as Harold Hill, the traveling salesman whose arrival turns the fictional town of River City upside down. Members of Clinton Senior Connection make up the cast of townspeople.

Acampora and STAKK founder and artistic director Laura Attanasio said the collaboration grew from their shared interest in the performing arts and a desire to create opportunities for older adults. Organizers hope the program will foster friendships, reduce isolation, and encourage seniors to stay engaged in the community.

The production is part of the Broadway Senior program developed by Music Theatre International, which encourages older adults to participate in musical theater as performers and storytellers.

Photography Exhibit Opens at CBSRZ Press Release from Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek

A new photography exhibition by Beth Green will open at Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek, featuring images from a career that has taken the photographer from professional sports to world leaders and, more recently, fine art photography.

Titled “See the World Through My Lens,” the exhibition showcases work spanning decades. Green, who works in both traditional film and digital photography, studied under Ansel Adams and Minor White during an internship at MIT. She favors natural light and in-camera composition over digital manipulation.

“Light is my paintbrush and the tool for my artistic license,” Green said. “There is nothing new in the world — it is how you choose to arrange it.”

Early in her career, Green became the first woman to photograph professional athletes inside their locker rooms. She later worked as a United Press International staff photographer and a Newsweek photo editor, photographing Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John Paul II, and several U.S. presidents. Her work also includes an award-winning 1977 photograph of Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Larry Bowa in action. Today, her focus is fine art photography.

Green, who lives in Chester and Manhattan and operates Beth Green Studios Inc., has taught photography at Rutgers University, Fordham University, and the New York Institute of Photography.

The exhibition opens with a public reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, at Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek, 55 E. Kings Highway, Chester. NHM Program Explores the Declaration as Art Press Release from the New Haven Museum

The New Haven Museum will host a presentation examining the Declaration of Independence as both a founding document and a work of art at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9.

John Bidwell, curator emeritus at the Morgan Library & Museum, will present “Declaration of Independence Prints and Broadsides,” tracing how reproductions of the Declaration evolved during the 19th century and reflected Americans’ growing appreciation of its symbolic significance.

The program is based on Bidwell’s recent publication, The Declaration of Independence in Script and Print: A Visual History of America’s Founding Document. His talk will explore how advances in printing technology made reproductions of the Declaration more widely available, often accompanied by portraits, patriotic imagery, and other decorative elements that reflected the Photo courtesy of the New Haven Museum nation’s evolving identity.

The evening also includes a John Trumbull's iconic painting Declaration of Independence is among the images discussed in a Sept. 9 reception at 5:30 p.m. and a rare program at the New Haven Museum exploring the visual history of America's founding document.

public viewing of the Whitney Library’s Presidential Signatures Collection, featuring letters and documents signed by U.S. presidents, along with William J. Stone’s 1823 engraving of the Declaration of Independence, considered one of the most accurate reproductions of the original document.

Bidwell began his curatorial career during the nation’s Bicentennial in 1976 and has spent decades studying American printing history and graphic design, with a particular focus on patriotic prints. He previously served as librarian of the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library at the University of California, Los Angeles, curator of graphic arts at Princeton University Library, and curator at the Morgan Library & Museum.

The program is part of NH250, a series of events presented by the New Haven Museum in conjunction with the nation’s 250th anniversary. Admission is free with regular museum admission.

LAA Seeks Entries for Fall Exhibitions Press Release from the Lyme Art Association

The Lyme Art Association is accepting submissions for two fall exhibitions, New England Landscape and Bon Appetit, both scheduled to be on view Friday, Sept. 18, through Friday, Nov. 6.

The call is open to paintings, drawings, hand-pulled prints, and sculpture in all media. Artists do not need to be Connecticut residents to enter, and all Lyme Art Association member artists are eligible to submit work.

The annual New England Landscape exhibition highlights landscapes of the East Coast, with an emphasis on terrestrial scenes rather than aquatic subjects.

Bon Appetit invites artists to explore

food through art, from traditional still lifes to scenes inspired by markets, meals, and other culinary subjects.

The submission period opened July 27, and the deadline to apply is midnight Friday, Aug. 21. Information about eligibility, the prospectus, and the application process is available on the Lyme Art Association website.

Founded in 1914, the Lyme Art Association exhibits and sells representational artwork while offering classes, lectures, and community programs. The gallery, located at 90 Lyme St., Old Lyme, is housed in a 1921 building designed by architect Charles Adams Platt and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Admission is free.
