Prospective Tenant Eyes Former Robert’s Space

The sudden closure of Robert’s Food Center last year generated considerable discussion among Madison residents, particularly those in the northern part of town, about what would replace the former grocery store and what the future holds for the North Madison Shopping Plaza. But new life could

come to the vacant building sometime next year.

According to the Economic Development Commission’s most recent meeting minutes, the commission has been in talks with a prospective tenant, Ming Chou, who has operated several grocery stores in Connecticut, including one in Suffield. Speaking with The Source, Chou confirmed that, as of July

20, “we think [we] have a deal” to open a new grocery store.

“We have a preliminary drawing done,” Chou said. “The architect and engineer are going to visit a town official.”

He said a new store could open sometime next year, although an exact timeline is See Prospective Tenant page 9

Nicole Flagge: Turning a Quiet Season Into Creativity

When Nicole Flagge’s husband was seriously injured in an accident, life suddenly slowed down.

As she cared for him at home and spent evenings putting her children to bed, she found herself returning to something she had loved since childhood.

She began to draw.

Soon, those illustrations grew into a story.

The result was The Lonely Lilypad, a picture book that recently earned finalist honors in the illustration category of the Tassy Walden Awards for New Voices in Children’s Literature.

“I was so surprised,” Nicole says. “I had no expectations. I thought, what the heck, I wrote it and I may as well send it in.”

Born and raised in Northford, Nicole graduated from North Branford High School before attending hairdressing school and later earning an associate degree in entrepreneurship from Middlesex Community College. Although she spent years working as a hairstylist, art was always

of the Week close at hand.

“My mom was a muralist and I always loved art,” she says.

Over the years, Nicole painted murals while balancing work and family life. More recently, she completed a large mural for Lenny & Joe’s Fish Tale in Madison that illustrates the restaurant’s history, from its beginnings to its growth into a shoreline landmark while highlighting its charitable contributions to the community.

Even as her mural work continued, the idea of writing a children’s book never completely disappeared.

“Writing a children’s book was always something I had as a floating idea,” she says.

During the months she spent caring for her husband, that idea finally took shape.

Inspired by her children’s fascination with nature—particularly her son’s excitement about learning outdoors—Nicole imagined the story from the perspective of a lily pad that longs to leave its pond before discovering that it already has an important place within its own ecosystem.

“The inspiration for the book came from my kids’ interest in nature and the outdoors,” she says.

While writing the story was a new challenge, illustrating it felt familiar.

Nicole says her artistic background made the visual side of the project the most enjoyable part of the process.

“The illustrations are more fun than writing the words,” she says.

Rather than creating cartoon-style artwork, she chose a more traditional illustration style, bringing frogs, beavers, and other pond life to the page with detailed paintings. She says one of her favorite illustrations features the book’s beaver.

If you haven’t been to the Surf Club lately, now’s the time to see the recent changes. Fencing has been installed on top of the seawall, along with concrete blocks in the sand with large pieces of exposed rebar.

Meanwhile, the Garvan Point project — completed not once but twice in the last year — is now cordoned off because the wall is cracking and at risk

of collapsing into the sea. It also has a 3foot drop from the stairs down to the sand. There is another just like it at the stairs in front of the playscape.

Given these recent projects, would you trust this administration to undertake the renovation of the Surf Club?

It’s time to rewrite history regarding the Genesee Settlement in North Madison.

Legend has it these brave travelers set out from Killingworth in the late 1700s to settle in the fertile farming community of Genesee Valley in New York, a trek of approximately 385 miles.

Traveling by horse and wagon, they would arrive to begin a new life in just under a month.

As luck (and legend) would have it, they broke a wagon wheel only four miles into their trip in what is now known as North Madison. At that point they looked around, saw nothing but rocky, infertile soil and said, “OK, we’re good! Unload the wagons.”

The Donner Party they’re not.

The Donners set out from Illinois to California, a trip of approximately 2,500 miles, and ran smack into an early-season blizzard that left them stranded and starving in Northern California. Desperate for survival, they resorted to canni-

balism to nourish their bodies, hoping to survive long enough to fulfill their dream. Only half survived.

A broken wagon wheel, the equivalent of a flat tire today, only four miles into the trip does not read well as the sole reason for the Genesee travelers to abandon their dream and settle in an area so infertile it was then known as “Rockland.”

Possible reasons for the shortened trek? Either the kids were in the back of the wagons screaming, “Are we there yet?” Or Grandpa had a prostate the size of a grapefruit and just wanted the dang journey to end. Plausible, but again, not a great read.

I encourage members of the Madison Historical Society to come up with a heroic, frontier-like story explaining why the Genesee Party called it kaput so early on.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Shoreline hosts two family support groups for the caregivers of individuals 18 and older who struggle with mental health challenges. One group meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Henry Carter Hull Library, 10 Killingworth Turnpike, Clinton. The other group meets on the last Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Nathanael B. Greene Community Center, 32 Church Street, Guilford. NAMI-trained facilitators offer these monthly support meetings to anyone who is striving to understand and help a family member who is experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. Stuart Larson Madison On June 14, 2026, Stuart "Stu" Larson, of Madison, passed away. Stu lived a full life — out on the water of the Long Island Sound, fishing, boating, and enjoying everything the salty water gave to him.

In addition to fishing, Stu was a skilled mechanic with an engineer’s mind. He could build almost anything, including the home he constructed himself from the foundation up.

Stu was an avid NASCAR enthusiast, traveling for years, by car, to Daytona to watch the races, always getting behind his Intimidator idol.

His garage was always open to anyone who needed help fixing a lawn mower or snow thrower.

Stu is survived by his wife, Maryblaise; daughters, Brenda Ragona, Sharon Apgar, and Deborah Larson; and grandson, Stuart Jillson.

There will be a celebration of Stu’s life held at 11 a.m. Aug. 15, at the First Congregational Church of Madison.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that people actively donate blood and platelets to the American Red Cross.

Obituary

Ida Etherington Madison Longtime Madison resident Ida Etherington died on the morning of July 10, 2026, at the age of 97 in Madison.

She was born on May 17, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., to Dorothy Willis and Felice Caruso, who predeceased her.

Ida grew up in Hinsdale, Ill., a western suburb of Chicago. She received a B.S. from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., in 1951, and a master’s in industrial psychology from the University of New Haven, New Haven, in 1983.

She taught kindergarten in Illinois, Indiana, and Connecticut. Ida was a licensed Realtor for 45 years, beginning in 1972, and worked for Shorelands Realty, Gould Agency, and Sotheby’s and was rumored to have sold or rented every house in Madison at least twice.

In 2014, she was recognized as a Realtor Emeritus for her more than 40 years in the profession.

Ida is survived by her children, Geoffrey Etherington III (and his wife Rae) of Putnam Valley, N.Y.; Amy Etherington (and her husband, David Model, and their children, Samantha Wei and David “Yoonk”) of Carlisle, Mass.; and Harold Etherington of Durham (and his son Luis); and her brothers, F. Willis

"Bill" Caruso and George (and his wife Jan) Caruso; and many nieces and nephews, Magi Lee and Bill, John, Tom, Jeanne, Frank, and Phillip Caruso, and Felicia Rice.

Ida will be missed by friends and neighbors from her 60 years in Madison, and was a well-known figure in Madison and neighboring towns. She was a devoted bridge player, gathering weekly with friends for fierce games and lively conversation for decades. She volunteered for VNA, League of Women Voters, PTA, and on and on. A past president and board member of the Shorelands Drive Association, she was a strong advocate for the community.

She loved the passing of the seasons at the beach in Madison, and will be remembered for hosting warm holiday gatherings, legendary summer parties, school reunions, anniversaries, and weddings at her beach house overlooking Long Island Sound. She welcomed countless strangers to her home who left fast friends and came to see her year after year.

The family is planning a memorial gathering for Ida in the fall.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) of Madison has received a boost in support as the Madison Foundation announced a partnership with the public health and safety volunteer group to “strengthen emergency preparedness and resilience throughout the community,” according to the foundation.

In a press release sent to The Source by Community Relations Coordinator Kim Vigliotti, the foundation outlined its support for the CERT team, which was approved for formation by the Board of Selectmen earlier this year. With the foundation’s support for the newly formed team, there are now “new opportunities for residents and local businesses to directly support public safety efforts in Madison,” the release said.

Through the partnership with the Madison Foundation, residents and businesses have a “tax-deductible way” to support the program, the release said. According to Ryan Duques, one of the CERT team’s strongest advocates, those contributions will help meet the program’s critical needs.

“Every dollar raised directly supports the equipment, uniforms, and advanced training our volunteers need to serve and protect the community,” Duques said.

Beyond providing needed equipment for the program, supporting the new public safety initiative also gives the Madison

Foundation another opportunity to fulfill its mission of helping Madison residents, said Vice President Dave Allen.

“The Foundation’s main purpose is to link people with resources in town to those who have a desire to assist the residents of the town,” Allen said. “Very similar to our involvement with Meals on Wheels or the Madison 200 Celebration, the CERT initiative was something that resonated with the Foundation, especially the CERT goal to strengthen the personnel and training around shelter management and assisting the Town’s emergency manager.”

Allen continued, “The Foundation has over 30 different funds dedicated to assisting the residents of Madison, with these endowed funds having a balance in excess of $3.0 million, ranging from scholarships to community services, and the CERT fund seemed to be a great addition to our funds.”

For Madison residents interested in joining CERT, there is an opportunity to serve the community during emergencies, Duques said.

“This program is an amazing opportunity for Madison residents to step up and serve their community when their neighbors are most in need, such as during severe storms and large-scale emergencies,” Duques said.

“Together, the Madison Foundation and Madison CERT are building a stronger, more prepared community for the future,” the foundation said.

Wood said he hopes the new store will attract not only North Madison residents but shoppers from the southern part of town as well.

“This independent grocer … could draw people from the coast because of the quality and the service and everything that he provides,” Wood said. “We were attracted by that because it was clear to us that people might go out of their way to go to him as opposed to going to Stop & Shop.”

Wood said restoring a grocery store to North Madison remains an important priority.

“The people living in North Madison now have to drive six miles to the supermarket,” he said. “The people who live up there are crying out for a place to go and buy milk that isn’t eight miles away.”

Wood also sought to address misconceptions circulating on social media since

Robert’s closed. Responding to questions about why the town has not moved forward with finding a new grocery store, Wood said the town cannot participate in lease negotiations or any final transaction because the shopping plaza is privately owned.

The Economic Development Commission is “trying to do everything we can” to help bring another grocery store to North Madison, Wood said. If Chou’s proposal or another tenant is not secured, however, Wood said he is “very aware” the shopping plaza could ultimately close. He emphasized that such a decision would rest solely with the property’s private owner, not the town. If that were to happen, he said, the town would lose a significant source of property tax revenue.

“That’s clearly not in the town’s interest,” Wood said. “We would love to see it released. It’s an important aspect; it helps reinforce that commercial area in North Madison. It is something that the town’s strategic plan focuses on.”

The Source reached out to Woodgreen Management Inc. for comment but did not receive a response.

However, Chou said the landlords have been “very helpful” and have offered to assist with construction once an agreement is finalized. He added that other potential investors he knew of decided against redeveloping the former Robert’s because of rising construction costs since 2020.

Opera Theater of Connecticut, based in Clinton, is seeking six to eight children ages 8 to 14 to sing in its 2026 production of Puccini's Tosca. where one of the guest speakers introduced participants to Shoreline Arts Alliance and its annual competition recognizing emerging children’s book writers and illustrators.

With only her completed manuscript and artwork to guide her, she submitted The Lonely Lilypad without knowing what to expect.

Being named a finalist came as a surprise.

“My family has been so supportive,” she says. “My kids have been adorable.”

Now Nicole hopes the recognition is only the beginning.

Her goal is to publish The Lonely Lilypad, whether through a traditional publisher or another opportunity that allows the story to reach young readers.

“I would love to get someone to pick it up,” she says.

The experience has also encouraged her to keep creating. Although she has additional picture book ideas waiting to be developed, Nicole says illustration remains the part of the process she enjoys most and hopes to one day illustrate books for other authors as well.

“I would love to write and illustrate,” she says, “but more so, I would want to illustrate other books.”

Outreach = Reaching Out Scranton

There’s nothing we love more than welcoming people through the doors of the library. Some visitors come to browse for a good book or movie, pick up a hold, bring a child to storytime, or attend one of our many programs. Others may be new to town and eager to get a library card so they can discover everything the library has to offer. And sometimes, all someone is looking for is a quiet, comfortable place to read the newspaper and escape the summer heat for a while.

Bringing people of all ages into the library is one of our greatest goals. Last year alone, more than 114,000 people walked through our doors, and that’s a number we’re incredibly proud of. But we also know that visiting the library isn’t always possible. Busy schedules, transpor-

tation challenges or simply not knowing about our services can all keep people away.

That’s why outreach is such an important part of our mission. We know that not everyone can come to the library, so we bring the library to the community. By visiting locations throughout town, we connect with people where they are, build relationships and learn more about the needs and interests of our neighbors.

Outreach helps us share library resources with new audiences and, we hope, inspire

even more people to visit us in person.

Scranton Library offers outreach opportunities for every age group. Our children’s librarians visit Madison’s day cares, preschools and elementary schools, bringing a giant bag of books, puppets, songs and stories to delight our youngest readers. Our teen librarian regularly visits the middle and high schools, participating in clubs and meetings that help students see the library as a welcoming place to study, play games or spend time with friends.

Our outreach extends to older adults as well. One of our librarians makes regular visits to the Senior Center, bringing books and movies while taking requests for future visits. We also offer homebound book delivery to those who can’t get to the library in person. Visit our website for further details.

One of our favorite outreach programs is

the Book Caddy, a small trailer stocked with popular books and movies that visits the Surf Club on Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons throughout the summer (weather permitting). Visitors can browse, check out and return materials, and even sign up for a library card.

This summer, you’ll also find Scranton Library at the Sunday Concerts on the Green. Stop by our table for information about upcoming programs, learn more about library services and cool off with a free ice pop!

Outreach allows us to connect with our community in meaningful ways, both inside and beyond the library’s walls. Artisans Sought for 31st Holiday Artisan Fair

Country School Announces 2026 Summer Camp Programs

North Madison Congregational Church is seeking artisans and crafters for the 31st Holiday Artisan Fair on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at “The Church at the Circle,” North Madison Congregational Church, 1271 Durham Road, Madison. The event features quality artisans and crafters, more than 2,500 homemade cookies, and Karen’s Café serving homemade soups and turkey pot pies. Admission is free. The Country School, 341 Opening Hill Road, Madison, is accepting registrations for its 2026 Summer Fun and Learning camps. The program runs Monday, June 22 through Friday, July 31, and offers weeklong morning camps for children ages 3 to 15. Camp topics include STEAM and science, coding, visual arts, nature and outdoor education, sports, mathematics, and creative writing. All camps meet Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and are taught by Country School faculty. The program is open to all community families; no Country School enrollment is required. Madison Travel Tigers Capture 13U Majors East Shore Travel League Championship

The Madison Travel Tigers 13U baseball team saved one of its best performances for the biggest game of the season.

The Tigers defeated the New England Knights, 14-11, Sunday at North End Field in Meriden to capture the 13U Majors East Shore Travel League championship and cap a memorable season.

Madison finished with a 22-7-1 record,

putting together a strong campaign that culminated in a league championship.

The Tigers’ offense came through in the title game, scoring 14 runs to hold off the Knights in a high-scoring contest. Madison battled throughout the game before securing the three-run victory to claim the championship.

The title capped a season in which the Tigers consistently found success on the field. With 22 wins, seven losses and one

tie, Madison established itself as one of the league’s top teams before finishing the season with a championship victory.

The Tigers’ roster included Nathan Brown, Travis Bloom, George Francis, Nathan Flynn, Xander Hammel, Noah Hendershot, Wesley Jopling, Ryan Kyttle, William Merschman, Cody Shove, Graham Stuhlman and Miles Ward.

The team was guided by manager Danny Weinstein and coaches Jack

Pireaux and Micheal Englehart, all former Daniel Hand baseball players.

For the players, the championship provided a fitting conclusion to a season defined by hard work, consistency and success.

The Tigers celebrated their accomplishment following the victory with family, friends and coaches after claiming the ESTL championship.

Pirates Slow Cubs with a 5-1 Win

After a delay caused by high temperatures and rain that washed out Monday’s scheduled makeup date, Week 10 marked a restart for many players. Some stayed active in other leagues or practiced at the courts while waiting to resume play. July also tends to bring the highest number of substitutes because of vacations, and with seven substitutes in the lineup this week, overall scoring dipped.

With temperatures in the mid80s and the threat of a passing storm, a steady breeze provided some relief throughout the evening. The average team score dropped to 258 points from last week’s season-high average of 269.

Forty-five of the 54 games were decided by more than five points.

For the first time in nine years, six of the nine matches produced at least five wins by one team.

The Braves swept the Tigers; the Giants posted a league seasonhigh 337 points in a 5-1 win over the Mets; the White Sox topped 300 points for the fourth time in a 5½-½ win over the Reds; the Rangers cooled the hot Rockies with a 5-1 victory; the Pirates slowed the Cubs with a 5-1 win; and the Marlins moved back into the playoff picture with a 5-1 win over the Dodgers.

Cody Layton subbed for Sheryl Serviss of the Tigers as they faced Frank Rausch’s Braves. The A/B games had no handicap, the A/C games favored the Tigers by 10 points, and the B/C games favored the Braves by six points.

In game one, the Tigers fell behind by 12 points before battling back to within three entering the final box, but Rausch’s double sealed the win. Rausch outscored the Tigers in game two, and the Braves did not need their handicap in game three. Rausch’s four doubles in game four, combined with the Tigers’ inability to take advantage of their handicap, gave the Braves two more wins.

The Braves used their handicap for a five-point win to complete their third sweep of the season and move into a tie for second place. Rausch’s 146-point series was the second-highest A Divi-

sion score, and he teamed with Mike Beckwith for 236 points.

In the Giants-Mets match, all six games carried a two-point handicap favoring the Mets.

Giants player Matt Valentin continued his hot scoring with a personal-best 113-point series to lead the B Division. Mike Zanelli Sr. also turned in his best series of the season, scoring 138 points

while recording only one open box in four games. The Giants’ five wins all came by double digits. In the Mets’ lone win, they led by one point entering the final box before Mark Goodale and Harvey Strausser [verify spelling] each tossed a ringer to secure a threepoint victory. Valentin and Adam Fortier, who had struggled previously in B/C play, recorded only

five open boxes in their two wins.

They remain the top-scoring B/C duo, averaging 161 points. Zanelli and Valentin combined for 251 points, and the Giants finished with 337 points, 75 ringers, seven doubles and scored on 65% of their shoes. The Giants are tied for second place.

Peter Furmonavicius’s Rangers knew they would be

challenged by the Rockies, the league’s highest-scoring team since Week 5 at 293 points per match, compared with the Rangers’ 249-point average during that span. They were also playing on Court 9, known for high scores. Although the handicap favored the Rangers in every game, they never needed it. Their five wins all came by double digits, including three by more than 20 points. After the first three games, when asked how she and her team were doing, Sue Pollard summed it up in one word: “terrible.” The Rockies’ lone win came in game four. With the handicap, the teams were tied entering the final box before the Rockies outscored the Rangers 10-4 for a five-point win as Pollard and Anthony Malerba combined for 63 points. Emily Taylor, subbing for Rangers player Gerry Hines, scored a season-best 60point series. Furmonavicius had only one open box in his seasonbest 139-point series, the thirdhighest A Division score. Teammate John Durinick added a season-best 108-point series, the third-highest B Division score.

The Rangers topped 300 points for the second time this season with 307, while the Rockies slipped to fifth in the standings.

Paul Noel, subbing for White Sox player Brady Miller, opened the match with six ringers in the first five boxes, helping the White Sox to a double-digit win over the Reds in game one. In game two, Joe Heery’s two points in the final box, combined with the handicap, earned a tie. Bob Beckwith won game three for the White Sox, and Kyle Wilson teamed with Noel for another victory. Beckwith’s 69 points helped secure wins in the final two games. Noel tied his season-best 129-point series, while Beckwith’s 112-point series was the second-highest B Division score. Noel and Beckwith combined for 241 points as the White Sox topped 300 points for the fourth time this season.

The White Sox outscored the Reds by 88 points, the night’s largest margin of victory, and increased their first-place lead to five games.

Pirates Slow Cubs with a 5-1 Win Continued from page 16 Cubs player Bob Cifaldi hoped to carry forward the momentum from last week’s 5-1 win over the Braves. Skip Robinson’s Pirates, meanwhile, continued their climb after opening the season in 13th place.

Over the past four weeks, the Pirates have gone 16-8 and moved into sixth place. Both teams needed substitutes for their B players, with Keith Toohey filling in for Scott Allen of the Cubs and Mike Shashok subbing for Brian Walsh of the Pirates. Robinson and Gary Stevens combined for 69 points to win game one. Cifaldi’s 38 points in game two produced the Cubs’ only win before the Pirates took the next four.

Robinson finished with a season-best 129point series. Stevens, a key contributor in both B/C wins, ended with an 89-point series and tied for second among C Division scorers. The Pirates and Cubs swapped places in the standings, with the Pirates moving up to fourth and the Cubs slipping to sixth.

John Hutra’s Marlins entered the night looking to continue their climb in the standings and strengthen their playoff position. Jeremy Davis’s Dodgers, whose early-season expectations have not materialized, are now playing spoiler the rest of the season. With two games played even and the handicap at only one or two points in the other four, the match was essentially a scratch contest. Dodgers player Ralph Sampson opened with five ringers in game one, and his 28 points led to their lone win. That also proved to be the Dodgers’ highest score of the match. As the Dodgers struggled to score, the Marlins took advantage, winning the final five games by an average of 12 points. Firstyear player Sampson finished with a season-best 87-point series. The Marlins reached .500 and now hold eighth place, the final playoff spot.

After the opening game between Mike Zanelli Jr.’s Orioles and Kris Toohey’s Cards, the match appeared headed for a close battle between two of the league’s top scorers. Zanelli edged Toohey 34-33 to give the Orioles the opening win, but Toohey controlled much of the rest of the match.

He finished as the night’s top scorer, tying his season-high 151-point series. Toohey won game two and received help from Todd Nuhn, the other half of the league’s top-scoring duo, to win game five. They were the Cards’ only two wins. Hunter Beckwith, subbing for Orioles player Ted Dubay, teamed with Andy Turshen for two wins. The Orioles won the match 4-2 and remained in seventh place. Turshen finished with a season-high 78-point series.

John Sciacca’s D’backs finally played a match with two handicaps greater than three points. John O’Brien’s 25 points were key in overcoming a seven-point handicap in game one. Dennis Allen’s Yankees won game four when Allen’s double in the final box, plus the handicap, produced a threepoint victory. In the two games when Allen and Vinny Jonynas teamed up, the Yankees won by double digits. O’Brien led the D’backs to their other two wins, finishing with a season-best 31-point game and tying his personal-best 96-point series. He was the top scorer in the C Division. The teams split the match.

Bill Beckwith’s Red Sox are playing for pride and embracing the role of spoiler, while Tony Cutone’s Angels, currently in 12th place, still have a chance to reach the playoffs. Ralph Sampson subbed for Angels player Paul Chrystal. The focus of the match was the head-to-head battle between Beckwith and Cutone. Cutone edged Beckwith 29-28 in game one, and Sampson’s points helped lead the Angels to the win. Beckwith answered in game two with a 40-33 victory over Cutone.

Sampson and Ed Turner combined for 48 points in game three to give the Angels a double-digit win. In their next meeting, Beckwith and Cutone each scored 27 points, and the Red Sox used their handicap for a one-point win.

In the final game of the night, Beckwith edged Cutone 22-21, and Red Sox player Paul Stevens scored four points in the final box to secure a four-point win. Beckwith finished with 117 points, 30 ringers and five doubles, while Cutone totaled 110 points, 27 ringers and four doubles. The teams split the match.

Legacy Theatre’s The Wizard of Oz Is an Imaginative Delight

Has anyone not seen the classic film musical The Wizard of Oz? It seems impossible that anyone has missed it.

Legacy Theatre in Branford is putting on stage a charming version of the film through Sunday, Aug. 9. This production is the official version that originated at England’s Royal Shakespeare Company in 1987. The adaptation of the film is by John Kane because, after all, a stage production needs more dialogue.

This production features all the songs from the original film — “Over the Rainbow,” “Ding, Dong the Witch Is Dead,” “If I Only Had a Brain,” and others.

Director Hannah Ryan has not attempted to create a spectacular.

Instead, she has used creativity and imagination. The set by Ryan Howell is a multilevel structure that allows for movement on each level as well as cast members crawling under the platforms. For the scenes in Kansas, it is a perfect barn, and for the scenes in Oz, it can be anything from a forest to the Emerald City, with help from the lighting design by Douglas Macur. Jimmy Johansmeyer’s costumes continue the imaginative rustic approach. When on the farm, the striped socks peeking out from under the overalls and clothing of Aunt Em and Uncle Henry hint at their transformation in Oz. The rustic approach went too far with Glinda’s costume lacking any glamour or pizzazz.

Of course, there must be Toto. Toto, or Gus, who greets guests at Stony Creek’s Thimbleberry Deli and Ice Cream Shop, is used mainly in the scenes on the farm. At other times, he is a stuffed animal that could be bigger.

Annika Jonker, a recent college graduate, makes a winning Dorothy. She doesn’t try to channel Judy Garland but makes the part her own. From the very beginning, she sets the mood with a lovely rendition of “Over the Rainbow.”

Crucial to any production of the show are the three farmhands who later become her traveling companions jour-

neying to see the Wizard. Garrett Van Allen, who recently appeared at New York City Center, makes a delightful Tin Man; Charles Romano displays elastic legs as the Scarecrow. (Remember the original role was played by dancer Ray Bolger.)

Jimmy Donohue, who has often appeared at Seven Angels Theatre, is a delightful Lion, though he channels Bert Lahr and his New York accent too much.

Olivia Fenton is a standout as Miss Gulch and the Wicked Witch. She makes the stern Miss Gulch menacing and determined, while the Wicked Witch enjoys the roadblocks she places in Dorothy’s way.

Both Sarah Anne Hughes as Glinda and Aunt Em, and Rick Fountain as Uncle Henry and the Emerald City guard, are effective.

Rod Brogan plays the Wizard and Prof.

Marvel with just the right degree of charm, ego and duplicity; you easily know that both are con artists.

It was delightful to hear a violin in the four-piece ensemble under the leadership of music director David Marottollo.

Eric Santagata incorporated effective choreography.

If I had one complaint, it was the staging of the tornado; it seems like Ryan just kept adding on elements. Initially it was dance and lighting, which was creative, but then she added in some weak projections. While they might fit her simplistic approach, they did not seem as creative as the rest of the show.

Doing a little research, I found that the original L. Frank Baum book was only published after he agreed to a stage musical! The book and show were so successful in 1900 that they led to 13 full-length sequels and six short stories. After the original book entered the public domain, multiple stage versions have been created.

You may recall the musical The Wiz and, of course, the blockbuster Broadway show Wicked. Another London stage version featured additional songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Ivoryton Surpasses Capital Campaign Goal; TheaterWorks Has World Premiere Play; ‘The Wild Party’ May Be Too Wild for Some Audiences

1930s Delight: 42nd Street, the hit Broadway musical based on the classic 1933 film, is on the Sharon Playhouse stage from Saturday, July 25, through Sunday, Aug. 9. Will the young dancer from Allentown, Pennsylvania, agree to take over for the injured star of a Broadway musical? The show features songs including “Lullaby of Broadway,” “We’re in the Money,” and “Shuffle Off to Buffalo.”

Success: Congratulations! Ivoryton Playhouse announced it has raised more than $2 million, surpassing its $1.5 million goal for its capital project. This includes $350,000 in state grants. Called Act II, the project, which is already underway, features a new building for rehearsal space as well as a storage area for props and furniture. Improved accessibility and upgrades

to the sound and stage lighting will enhance the theater itself.

The Great Gatsby: Tickets are now on sale for The Great Gatsby. The national tour will play the Bushnell Theatre from Tuesday, Sept. 29, through Sunday, Oct. 4.

The musical, which opened on Broadway during the 2023-24 season, is still running.

Long Wharf News: Though Artistic Director Jacob Padrón is finishing his tenure, the theater has announced that he will remain associated with it. Scary Title: The Cannibals of McGower County, the world premiere production at TheaterWorks Hartford, sounds fascinating. It’s described as connected to Southern Gothic works, where beauty and rot exist in the same breath. Director Jen Wineman said she was drawn to the work because of the way playwright Drew Larimore depicts complicated women. The play runs from Thursday, July 30, through Sunday, Aug. 30. Tickets are available at TWHartford.org.

The Wild Party: The title doesn’t lie; the musical now playing at Playhouse on Park through Sunday, Aug. 16, is definitely for adults only. It’s based on a long poem by Joseph Moncure March about a group of artists and performers in Hollywood in the 1920s. The relationships are fluid (as are the genders), and there is enough booze and cocaine to fuel a very wild party. The cast is talented, and Andrew Lippa has written some good songs. But it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

New York Notes: That rarity—an original musical—will star Luke James when Wanted begins previews Oct. 15.

James is a Grammy-nominated R&B singer, songwriter, and actor.

DOLLY: A True Original Musical will

begin performances Dec. 7. The show about the life of Dolly Parton will open on her 81st birthday, Jan. 19.

When Reba McEntire took over for Bernadette Peters in Annie Get Your Gun 25 years ago, fans hoped for a recording of her rendition of the famous Irving Berlin songs. Finally, Angel Records is streaming two singles she recorded during her run in the show: “You Can’t Get a Man With a Gun” and “I Got Lost in His Arms.”

The 20th annual Shoreline Jewish Festival will take place Sunday, Aug. 2, from noon to 5 p.m. on the Guilford Green, celebrating Jewish life in America as the nation marks its 250th anniversary.

Festivalgoers will find artists and artisans selling Judaica, jewelry, clothing and artwork, along with books for children and adults. Children’s activities will include inflatable attractions and Jewish-themed arts and crafts.

Old Lyme Arts District to Host Midsummer Festival July 25-26 Press Release from the Old Lyme Arts District

The Old Lyme Arts District will present two community celebrations this July: the Midsummer Kickoff Concert on Friday, July 24, and the Old Lyme Midsummer Festival on Saturday, July 25. The familyfriendly events celebrate the town’s artistic heritage and community spirit with art, music and activities throughout the weekend.

The festivities begin Friday with a free outdoor concert on the riverfront lawn of the Florence Griswold Museum. From 7 to 9 p.m., Mass-Conn-Fusion will perform classic hits. Food vendors will be on site, and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

with activities throughout the Arts District. Connecticut is home to eight species of year-round turtles, including the eastern musk turtle, commonly known as the stinkpot, which releases a strong odor to deter predators. Visitors can learn more about the state’s native turtles during “Totally Turtles,” a free program presented by Meigs Point Nature Center on Sunday, Aug. 2, at 2 p.m. at the PardeeMorris House. Registration is required.

The program will feature live native turtles while educators discuss their diets, adaptations, habitats and the role they play in Connecticut’s ecosystems. Attendees will also learn how to identify native turtle species and what to do if they encounter a turtle crossing a road.

According to Meigs Point Nature Center, turtles are important contributors to their ecosystems. The diamondback terrapin, for example, is considered a keystone species in Connecticut’s salt marshes because it feeds on coffee bean snails,

helping protect the marsh grasses on which the ecosystem depends. The diamondback terrapin is listed as a species of special concern in Connecticut, primarily because of habitat loss.

Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and picnics and stay for the afternoon. Free tours of the Pardee-Morris House will be available from noon to 4 p.m.

Wings ‘N Strings Festival Returns to Guilford Town Green July 25 Press Release from Guilford Parks & Recreation

Guilford Parks & Recreation’s Wings ‘N Strings Bluegrass Country Festival returns for its second year on Saturday, July 25, from 3 to 8 p.m. on the Guilford Town Green.

Following its inaugural event, the festival returns with live bluegrass and country music, food, family activities, local vendors and entertainment.

“Wings ‘N Strings is all about bringing people together,” Parks & Recreation Director Pamela Gery said. “It’s an opportunity to enjoy great entertainment, support local businesses, and spend quality time with family and friends while creating lasting summer memories. Guilford Parks & Recreation was looking to create something different and fun, and this is what we came up with.”

Throughout the afternoon, nationally and locally recognized musicians will perform while visitors enjoy food, local vendors and family activities.

Festival fare will include chicken wings, loaded baked potatoes and other favorites.

A beer and wine garden also will be available.

Chainsaw artist JareBear Chainsaw Carvings will create a live wood carving during the festival. As part of the town’s America 250 celebration, the artist also has donated a hand-carved American eagle that will be raffled during the event.

Proceeds from the raffle will support future Wings ‘N Strings festivals.

Organizers encourage visitors to bring lawn chairs, enjoy the music, browse vendor booths and watch the chainsaw carving demonstration throughout the afternoon.

Paddle for the Sound Returns Press Release from Save the Sound

Save the Sound’s Paddle for the Sound returns for its 11th year from Friday, July 31 through Sunday, Aug. 9, inviting paddlers of all experience levels to kayak, stand-up paddleboard or canoe while raising funds to protect and restore Long Island Sound.

Paddle for the Sound allows participants to paddle from any location during the 10-day challenge and log their miles at their own pace. Each paddler is encouraged to raise a minimum of $150 through an individual or team fundraising page.

Proceeds support Save the Sound’s efforts to improve water quality, restore critical habitats, build climate resilience, and protect the rivers, wetlands and open spaces that surround Long Island Sound.

Groups of five or more participants will each receive a Save the Sound bucket hat.

Organizers say the team option offers friends, families, coworkers and community organizations an opportunity to participate together while supporting cleaner water.

Long Island Sound provides habitat for more than 100 plant species, 1,200 invertebrates and 170 fish species while supporting recreation, local communities and the regional economy. According to Save the Sound, pollution, habitat loss and climate change continue to threaten the Sound’s health. Funds raised through Paddle for the Sound support projects aimed at protecting and strengthening the resilience of the Sound.
