Connelly Challenges Parker in 101st District Race

Madison resident Mary Ann Connelly has announced her candidacy to represent the 101st District in the Connecticut House of Representatives. Connelly, who currently serves on the Madison Board of Education, is the Republican challenger to the district’s

Democratic incumbent, John-Michael Parker, who confirmed to The Source his intention to seek re-election to a fourth term.

Connelly announced her candidacy April 18 while standing on the steps of Memorial Town Hall, surrounded by about 30 supporters and several American flags. She explained why she decided to run and spoke about representing Madison in Hartford.

“After living here in Madison for the past 30 years, I’ve seen firsthand how our community has changed—the good, the challenges—and I believe we can do better, together,” said Connelly. “District 101 is more than a place on a map. Cynthia Schneider: ‘You Have to Give Back’

Retirement hasn’t slowed Cynthia Schneider’s dedication to Madison.

After decades working in education, she now supports learning and community connection in a new way: as president of the E.C. Scranton Memorial Library Board of Trustees.

Cynthia, who has lived in Madison for 32 years, has long been connected to the town through both her career and community involvement. Over the years, she worked as an English teacher, English and library coordinator, and later spent 11 years as an assistant principal at Daniel Hand High School.

After retiring, Cynthia was nominated to join Scranton’s board, a role she says was a natural fit given her background in education, libraries and administration.

“It seemed like a very good fit for me to be on the library board,” she says. “If you’ve had all the jobs I’ve had, you love libraries. You love books.”

of the Week As president of the board, she works with committees focused on library policy, finances, strategic planning and fundraising. She says the role allows her to stay connected to the community through events, projects and outreach efforts, something she always valued during her years working in Madison schools.

She also focuses on fundraising, another important part of her role.

“The town very generously provides 65-70% of the operating budget of the library, but the rest of it we have to fundraise for,” she says. “So that’s why you see a lot of activities and programs and appeals for the library.”

She also says the Friends of Scranton Library is a huge help in raising those funds.

The library serves more than just readers, Cynthia says; it is also a social gathering hub. People of all ages use the library for activities ranging from Toddler Tango Tuesdays to teen and adult events.

“There’s something for everyone at the library,” she says.

Cynthia says the library has become an important gathering space for many community members, especially in recent years. In addition to books and educational programs, people visit the library to study, attend events, work remotely or simply spend time around others. She says the library helps create social connections for people of all ages within the community.

Scranton has changed over the years, with an expansion completed in 2020 and, more recently, the restoration of the old post office building. The library can now support far more visitors, with 114,000 visiting last year.

Daniel Hand’s wish for Academy School has been fulfilled. For 100 years, Academy served as a school. The town has honored his generous gift. His name and legacy have been upheld. Now, it is time to let go. I am sure Hand himself would agree.

I applaud the town for honoring Hand’s parting gift. Honoring his bequest shows dedication and loyalty.

We still have the opportunity to uphold his legacy by regifting the land back to our townspeople. A fast-growing scarcity

has become open space. Once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. Tax dollars and profits can’t drive everything in life. In the long run, open space is more valuable.

Demolishing Academy allows us to restore simple beauties once cherished: a statue of Daniel Hand, benches, flowers and open-air markets. I believe Daniel Hand himself would agree. It’s time.

Sadie Sport will offer the East Shore Women’s Summer Basketball League this summer for girls and women ages 9 and older at the Madison Surf Club basketball courts. The outdoor league is open to players with recreation- or travel-level experience and is designed as an organized pickup-style program in a relaxed environment with Daniel Hand High School player coaches. The league includes three divisions: girls ages 9 to 11 entering grades 5 and 6; girls ages 12 to 15 entering grades 7 through 9; and women ages 18 and older who are out of high school. Players will compete in seven games on Friday nights, with an additional game scheduled Monday, June 29, from Friday, June 12 through Friday, July 31. A rain date is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 7. Games will begin at 5:30, 6:45, or 8 p.m., with younger players expected to play earlier time slots depending on registration numbers. Participants will be contacted by Sadie Sport with confirmed game times before the program begins. Players should bring their own warm-up basketballs and water bottles. The Country School, 341 Opening Hill Road, Madison, is accepting registrations for its 2026 Summer Fun and Learning camps. The program runs Monday, June 22 through Friday, July 31, and offers weeklong morning camps for children ages 3 to 15. Camp topics include STEAM and science, coding, visual arts, nature and outdoor education, sports, mathematics, and creative writing. All camps meet Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and are taught by Country School faculty. The program is open to all community families; no Country School enrollment is required. Most camps cost $250 to $260 per week. An optional Lunch Bunch runs from noon to 12:30 p.m. for $50 per week. Myron Patrick Madison Myron L. Patrick, known by friends as “Pat,” passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, at the age of 82, surrounded by his family. Born Aug. 27, 1943, to Raymond and Beulah Patrick in Conway, Ark. Pat graduated from North Little Rock High School, where he excelled at basketball and baseball. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was sent to Yale University to study linguistics, where he met his future wife, Janet (Janie) Patrick. During the Vietnam War, Pat used his training from Yale’s Institute of Far Eastern Languages (known as the “Yale Method”) to serve as crew on many reconnaissance missions over the South China Sea. Following the war, Pat returned to Connecticut, where he married his wife.

Pat worked as a welder and machinist, ending his career as a manufacturing supervisor and inspector at Aerocision in Chester.

He enjoyed spending time with his

children and grandchildren. He loved coaching Little League and softball for all three of his children, as well as his grandson. Pat always had time to take his children fishing and loved spending time with his family. He was a longtime fan of the UConn Huskies and enjoyed attending many games with friend Jim Leahy, as well as family.

He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Beulah Patrick, as well as his sister, Janice Brashear. Pat is survived by his wife, Janie Patrick, of Madison; his daughter, Lee Larrick, and her children, Alexandra and Kaine (Courtney); his sons, Frank (Jane) Patrick and his daughter, Lauren; Seth (Meagen) Patrick and their children, Catherine and Aiden; his brother, Richard (Joyce) Patrick; his sister, Linda Glenn; as well as many beloved pets.

The family would like to thank the North Haven Smilow nurses and caregivers, whom he affectionately called “His Angels,” for always putting a smile on his face through the toughest of times, as well as his hospice caregivers.

Services were private.

Donations Sought for GNHCP Tag Sale Fundraiser The Greater New Haven Cat Project, Inc. (GNHCP) is seeking donations of gently used items for its annual tag sale fundraiser, scheduled for Saturday, May 16.

$15.3M Improvements Begin at Polson

Next month will mark the start of a series of structural and systems improvements at Walter C. Polson Middle School, including the installation of new cooling systems and energy upgrades, cosmetic improvements to some of the building’s largest spaces, and the establishment of the town’s new emergency shelter.

The improvements carry a total cost of $15.3 million and will be executed through a “Construction-at-Risk” project delivery contract, according to a presentation shared with The Source. The work is designated as “Year 1 Projects,” part of a fouryear effort that will include additional upgrades at Polson, such as roof replacement and asbestos abatement.

According to district construction manager Ben Whittaker, the Year 1 Project represents the “big push” of the four-year effort, and “the outcome of this will determine how much funding is left to fund the rest of the projects” planned.

Overall, the work is part of the Madison Renewal Plan adopted by the Board of Education in 2019 and approved by voters at a 2022 referendum. The facilities plan also includes completed projects such as the construction and opening of Neck River Elementary School and the conversion of Dr. Robert H. Brown Middle School into a second elementary school serving North Madison students.

The district anticipates all improvements at Polson will be completed by February 2027, after which normal school operations will resume.

The first component of the Year 1 Project is the renovation of the Polson gymnasium, which will become the town’s new emergency shelter. To support that function, the district will install a new dieselfueled generator in a former café storage room. According to the presentation, the generator will be “capable of meeting the power needs of the entire building, with fully automatic switchover.”

The total budget for the generator, switchboard, and associated labor is $3,140,796. About half of that cost is supported by a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy and a $500,000 grant from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development.

According to Whittaker, the town will match the federal grant at 32%, while the $1,601,212 approved May 27 represents the second local share of the project’s cost.

As previously reported in The Source, Polson offers several advantages as an emergency shelter compared with the Town Campus gym, including a larger space, an in-house kitchen, and shower facilities. First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons said, “Relocating our shelter from the Town Gym to Polson will significantly improve the amenities and services we can provide residents during states of emergency and other natural disasters.”

Additional improvements to the gymnasium include new bleachers, lighting, flooring, and painting. Two new HVAC units will also be installed on the roof near the gym.

The gymnasium will be offline from May 11 to Nov. 28, according to the district. During that time, school-related activities normally held there will be relocated to auxiliary space used by the high school gymnastics team, said district facilities director Peter Anderson.

Work on broader electrical and HVAC upgrades at Polson will begin in June.

New penthouse HVAC systems will replace “end-of-life” units and provide energy-efficient cooling to 24 classrooms and other instructional spaces that previously lacked cooling, according to the district. The systems are expected to be operational by fall and will bring air conditioning throughout the building, including the auditorium.

As part of the Year 1 Project, the auditorium will undergo what the district describes as a “full-scale renovation,” including abatement, a new ceiling, updated house lighting, theatrical lighting and sound, and new seating. The auditorium has largely maintained its original design since construction, but the town began considering renovations about six years ago, Anderson said.

Like the gymnasium, the auditorium will be closed for part of the next school year, with activities such as assemblies relocated to the auxiliary gymnasium.

With preparation work complete, the Year 1 Project will “explode with activity” at Polson over the summer, Whittaker said, bringing what Anderson described as an exciting period of change for the town.

“It’s an exciting time for Madison,” Anderson said. “It’s going to be neat to have a fully air-conditioned auditorium where they can have not only school events, but town events. There can be meetings that can be in an air-conditioned, comfortable environment.”

Essex Bank Donates $1,851 to Madison Cultural Arts Press Release from Essex Bank

Essex Bank has donated $1,851 to the Madison Cultural Arts Association as part of its monthly “Pop-Up Grant” program.

The April 17 donation is one of a series planned for 2026, with a different local nonprofit receiving funding each month in recognition of the bank’s founding in 1851.

Diane Arnold, president and CEO of Essex Bank, said the contribution will support the organization’s annual Fourth of July concert on the Madison Green.

“There’s nothing quite like the 4th of July concert on the Madison Green, and we’re proud to help keep that tradition going with this donation,” Arnold said.

“We understand that there is considerable manpower and expense that goes into the

success of this special event, particularly for this important anniversary year of the town and the nation.”

The Madison Cultural Arts Association is a nonprofit organization focused on promoting music through its free annual concert. This year’s performance will mark both Madison’s 200th anniversary and the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Board of Education with distinction.”

“She is a very caring person who wants to do what’s right in this district, including for taxpayers,” Rasimas said. “It is time for a change in Hartford, and Mary Ann will help enact that change.”

Incumbent State Rep. John-Michael Parker (D-101) confirmed to The Source that he is running for re-election. He said affordability remains his “number one” issue, citing “the challenges to our economy we’re seeing as a result of federal actions.”

He supports a balanced budget “that returns funds to our community” to address affordability concerns. Continuing to support schools and families is another priority, he said, including policies related to child care, such as a child tax credit, as well as “steps in the public health realm that keep kids and families and communities safe.”

Parker pointed to what he called one of the “clearest tangible results” of his work in Hartford: delivering more than $3 mil-

lion in state funding for education, supporting special education funding, and advancing what he described as “historic investments” in child care, along with efforts in environmental protection and coastal resilience.

Parker’s office also provided a statement highlighting his accomplishments during his tenure, including “securing tens of millions of dollars in additional state funding for Madison and Durham—supporting school construction, community projects, infrastructure improvements, and local programs.”

The incumbent said he looks forward to continuing to connect with constituents across the 101st District and sharing his accomplishments and goals.

“I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to keep in touch with people from across our district on both legislation and local issues throughout my time as a state legislator, and I look forward to many more conversations in the months ahead during this campaign,” he said.

Libraries today offer more than just books, Cynthia says, and Scranton continues evolving to meet the community’s changing needs. One newer initiative is the introduction of “memory care kits,” designed for people experiencing memory loss. The kits include books, movies and other materials centered around past

decades that may help spark memories.

The library also offers sensory kits and other nontraditional resources.

“It’s not like the library you remember, maybe,” she says.

Cynthia says libraries today serve as more than places to borrow books and that they depend on volunteer support, much like many other community organizations in Madison. She says she remains committed to giving back to the town she has called home for more than three decades.

“You have to give back,” she says.

Ginsburg Earns Coach of the Year for Hand Fencing

There are many reasons people get into coaching. Some former athletes want to stay connected to the sport they grew up playing, while others take up a new sport to coach their own children.

Whatever the reason, coaches take on these leadership roles, and the impact they have on their players and programs is undeniable. Most are never formally recognized by the league or even the organizations they coach for, but every successful athlete has that one coach who made a difference.

For Daniel Hand fencing coach Mike Ginsburg, his impact was recognized league-wide this season as he helped lead the Tigers to a conference title and a topthree finish at states. Ginsburg was named Coach of the Year, and two of his players believe there is no more deserving recipient.

Owen Swift has been one of the top sabers in the state over the past few years.

He is a multi-time All-State fencer, a conference champion, the fastest fencer in program history to reach 100 career wins, and the first to reach the milestone as a junior.

All of those accomplishments have come under the tutelage of Ginsburg, and Swift believes his coach has been a key part of his success.

“Coach Ginsburg has been an incredibly supportive coach. He really prioritizes the well-being of the team and supports the players as individuals,” Swift said. “He’s absolutely the most deserving coach of this award, because his impact went beyond the team and made the whole conference better.”

Swift added that Ginsburg is always looking to help others, whether they are part of his team or not.

“He’s always fixing problems and

keeping things running smoothly, or just checking in with coaches and fencers from every team,” he said. “His support and guidance have given me a stable base to build my high school fencing career, and I truly believe I would not be where I am today without his help.”

Kasey Chen, a highly decorated fencer on the girls team, echoed Swift’s sentiment. This season, Chen also earned her 100th career victory while helping lead the team to a conference championship and advancing individually to the state championship.

She said while she attributes much of her success to Ginsburg, he is also someone she considers a mentor, a role model, and a friend.

“He truly brings out the best in my teammates and me, cultivating a team culture that really does feel like family,” Chen said. “He has taught me many things besides fencing, like integrity,

leadership, and perseverance. He always leads by example and sets his expectations for us at the same level.”

She said the most important lesson Ginsburg has taught her in her four years in the program is to have fun. Without his encouragement to do her best while also enjoying the experience and building friendships, she said she would not be where she is today.

“I literally hear him in the back of my mind at tournaments outside of school, saying just have fun, and I’m always trying to make new friends thanks to him,” Chen said. “I believe that Coach Ginsburg is very deserving of the award. The amount of time and dedication he has given, not just to our team but to the entire district, has been astounding. He’s always pushing to improve fencing for high school students, and I truly believe he has made such a big difference since he started coaching here.”

Hand Tennis Standout Skylar Powers Earns Praise

Daniel Hand girls tennis coach John Gage has seen many players come through the program during his time with the Tigers.

However, one player stands out more than the rest when it comes to development and success.

That player is senior Skylar Powers, one-half of the top doubles duo with fellow senior Emma Coscia. Powers has been a pillar for the Tigers and played a major role in leading the team to a Class M state championship last year.

This season, Powers was named co-captain. Gage said the honor reflects her dedication to the sport and her craft.

“In my five seasons of coaching high school tennis, Skylar Powers may very well be my greatest success story,” Gage said. “She has grown so much as a tennis player, not just with her skills but also her on-court demeanor. Tennis is a mental game more than anything, and Skylar has worked extremely hard to improve her mental fitness on the court.”

Gage added that Powers spent the last two seasons honing her game at the No. 2 doubles spot and has since flourished this season while playing with Coscia, as well as senior Claire Harriman and her younger sister, Reese.

“A testament to how far she has come is evident in her ability to play with different partners,” Gage said. “Her ability to stay positive on the court even when things get tense. Skylar was elected as a co-captain of this year’s team, and that more than anything speaks to her growth.”

So far this season, Powers has picked up where she left off last year. She and her partners have won all but one match, a loss to Guilford. With the pressure to perform and lead the team, she has handled it well.

She said she enjoys the leadership role, helping teammates adjust to their positions in the lineup and getting to know them.

“The season’s been going very well so far in general with both individual play and the team,” Powers said. “It was really exciting to get captain, but I feel like I’ve always been very outgoing, and I always try to make people feel like they have a place on the tennis team.”

Powers added that she didn’t necessarily expect to be named captain this season, but quickly adjusted to the role and its responsibilities. As for consistency with the same doubles partner, the duo has focused on the basics.

“We’ve definitely improved

since last year, and we’ve been a really strong team this year.

We’ve won a lot of matches against teams that we didn’t beat last year, like Cheshire,” she said.

“We’ve definitely done even better this year than we did last year, and we worked pretty well together last year, so it’s been a good improvement.”

Powers praised Coscia, calling her a strong player with solid baseline shots, and said the two work well together. She added that they keep each other balanced and confident.

While Powers doesn’t often get to play with her sister, she said the match they played together was a meaningful moment.

“We’re very close, and it’s been very exciting having her on the team,” Powers said. “We get to go to everything together, so it was exciting when she made the team last year. We got to play a match together earlier in the season, and that was really exciting. That was fun.”

As the team continues through the season, Powers will be at the center of it, hoping to help the Tigers repeat as state champions.

The Tigers return to the court Thursday, April 30, against Branford at 3:45 p.m.

Your Next Audiobook? Narrated Next Door

If you’ve been listening to audiobooks like Consider Me, one of The Country Club Murder series, or South of Somewhere, you should know this: those narrators might be your neighbors.

Several southeastern Connecticut residents have developed full-time careers as audiobook narrators. The four narrators The Day interviewed all began recording at Tantor Studios, a major audiobook publisher in Old Saybrook, in 2015 or 2016.

The popularity of audiobooks has soared, propelled by two major factors.

First was the advent of internet downloads. Before that, books were on tape or CDs; Alex Kydd, of New London, recalled that the first audiobook he narrated was a 10-disc compilation.

The second industry-changing event was the pandemic, when people stuck at home were looking for entertainment options.

These four narrators — all actors first — went into Tantor daily when they started. Callie Beaulieu, of Stonington, recalled regular 9-to-5 shifts at the Old Saybrook location.

“We used to call each other booth buddies. Tantor had a series of recording booths in their on-site facilities, and we would all go in for 9 o’clock, we’d all record our pages, and we’d all leave at 5 o’clock.

We were a team,” she said.

When the 2020 shutdown happened, they shifted to working at home in makeshift recording booths. They have since upgraded to impressive setups, using materials like foam and moving blankets for soundproofing.

Having a booth at home comes with occasional challenges. Beaulieu recalled recording and hearing what sounded like snoring. She finally opened her booth door to find her 20-pound cat “dead asleep outside the door snoring,” she said. b

with rates varying widely based on experience, Beaulieu said. Amy Bentley noted the standard negotiated rate for SAGAFTRA narrators is $200 to $300 per finished hour, along with contributions toward health and retirement, though each publisher negotiates its own rate.

Nonunion narrators set their own prices.

Kydd was cast as a romance narrator early on because of where his voice sits.

When he narrates, he adapts his delivery to match the genre.

“I always imagine — because it’s romance — that I’m telling, like, my best friends a very sexy secret, you know what I mean?” he said. “I imagine I’m really talking to somebody and telling them a story, versus sitting here and reading, which is, I think, why I’ve worked a lot, because I think listeners really respond to that — especially with romance.”

Narrating a book is much more than reading. It is closer to acting, though, as Kydd put it, “honestly, it’s a lot more work because you’re playing everybody.”

There are two types of recordings. In one, Kydd plays all the men, a female narrator plays all the women, and an editor blends the recordings so it sounds like a real-time conversation.

Kydd works on four to six books a month, usually giving himself about a week per book. Sometimes, he works 12- to 16-hour days.

“You get into a flow. Sometimes you vibe with one author’s writing over another’s.

Sometimes I’m able to go for two minutes without a mess-up. Sometimes I’m going sentence by sentence. It just depends on the day,” he said.

Casting directors and producers now know Kydd well and book him accordingly.

Authors who have heard his work sometimes request him directly.

Kydd studied acting at the William Esper Studio in New York City. His favorite theater roles include Romeo in Romeo and Juliet with Flock Theatre in New London, and Victor Frankenstein in Frankenstein at Capital Classics in Hartford.

He has recorded for Disney, Audible, and Simon & Schuster, among others. He still occasionally records at Tantor, and Audible brings him to its New Jersey Photo by Sarah Gordon/The Day headquarters.

When it comes to narrating audiobooks, some people are hired for a range of subjects, while others — like Kydd — find themselves selected for a specific genre.

“I’m circling in on about 300 books at this point, all romance. It’s aaall romance,” Kydd said. “For me, there’s a huge focus on sports romance. Specifically, hockey. It’s ironic because I’ve never even seen a hockey game.”

He didn’t narrate Heated Rivalry, though he noted Tantor produced the 2019 audiobook of that now-buzzy release.

“I get to act every single day, and that’s rare for a normal person to get to act every day, to really commodify the art in a full-time, sustainable way. ... I feel lucky in that sense,” he said.

He also appreciates the flexibility. While it’s full-time, the schedule is his own. b

Acting and Narrating Beaulieu grew up in Stonington, where she performed with the Stonington Players, studied acting at the University of Connecticut, worked as an actress in Chicago, and later returned home after time abroad.

She still acts in film and television, recently appearing in episodes of Best Medicine on Fox and Stumble on NBC. She no longer performs onstage, finding that theater and audiobook work together took too much of a toll on her voice.

Audiobook narrators, she said, must remember “you’re in someone’s ear.”

“The intimacy level shifts, and I’m sure you can gather from this conversation, I’m basically Carol Channing just in general. I’m pretty big,” she said, laughing. “So it’s been learning to create an intimacy on the mic, and you don’t have to push so hard.”

During her busiest year, Beaulieu recorded 48 books.

Her work spans genres, including 25 books in a single cozy mystery series.

She also records nonfiction, from self-help to science.

“I think what I love the most about doing nonfiction is I truly, honestly believe that I’ve become smarter and I’ve become a better human being, because I’ve read titles I never in a million years would have picked up, and they’ve made me better for the narrating,” she said.

For one seven-hour science book, she spent 23 hours on research.

“It takes longer because you have to stop and literally sometimes do a sentence a couple times in order to get the pronunciation right so it has a flow to it, so it sounds like you know what you’re saying,” she said.

From Amish Romances to Cozy Mysteries Amy Bentley, who grew up in East Lyme and now lives in Oakdale, began narrating audiobooks after Beaulieu mentioned audition opportunities at Tantor while they were performing together with Flock Theatre.

Now an independent contractor, Bentley worked with 13 companies last year.

She narrates across genres.

“Some people’s voices are more suited for fiction. Some

people are more suited to nonfiction. Within those, there are subcategories as well. It just depends on where your voice falls naturally,” she said.

Bentley said she tried textbooks “a spin — not for me.”

“If you were to listen to an audiobook, you’ll know right away whether you’re going to like it because if the narrator is not interested and engaged in the topic, you probably won’t be interested and engaged in the topic,” she said.

Bentley often narrates cozy mysteries and small-town romances. She previously did more young adult titles.

“For a while, I was big in Amish romances. ... That’s exactly what you think, romance over the butter churning and so on,” she said.

Different genres require different tones. Cozy mysteries often feature a sassy, rough-around-the-edges protagonist, while Amish romances call for a more wholesome delivery.

A typical 200-page book takes about three days to record. She caps her daily workload at 60 to 70 pages.

Bentley graduated from East Lyme High School in 2008 and earned a theater degree from Western Connecticut State University. Her stage roles include Olga in Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Hysteria in Fat and Blood by Hannah Simms at Hartbeat Ensemble, and Lady Macbeth in Flock Theatre’s Macbeth.

“What is similar between acting and narrating is you really launch yourself into that character and start thinking of things as if you were that person,” she said. “But when you’re doing an audiobook, you have a million chances to get it exactly the way you like it. Whereas when you’re onstage ... what you get is what you get. You can’t erase and do another take.” b

‘This is a Marathon’ Vanessa Vradenburgh, whose professional name is Vanessa Daniels, was an actress in New York City before moving to Madison with her family. After stepping back from acting to raise her children, she auditioned at Tantor and has worked in audiobooks for a decade.

The transition wasn’t easy.

“I had some commercial voice-overs, which is quick, right? Quick clips. This is a marathon. It’s a marathon mentally and vocally, and I’ll be honest, I was terrible at it when I started,” she said. “I’m very grateful that they actually stuck with me and believed that I would get better. I’m sure that’s pretty normal ... because it’s a different sort of media. It takes a minute to get used to the nuances of something new.”

Maintaining focus for hours at a time was the biggest challenge.

Once recording is complete, a proofreader reviews the audio and flags errors. Vradenburgh then records correc-

tions, following a document that notes each issue, before editors finalize the track.

She primarily records detective novels and cozy mysteries, but has also narrated books on parenting and women in business.

“It’s cool because you work alone, but it’s a huge community. I’ve made a lot of friends,” she said.

She also enjoys building relationships with authors.

“I’ve made relationships with a couple of authors that I’ve done multiple books for in their series, and that’s really cool, especially if they really like what you’ve done and they start to request you for their titles. That feels really good,” she said.

Hearing from listeners is especially meaningful.

Vradenburgh recalled a conversation with a man who told her he has dyslexia and can’t read.

“The only way I can enjoy books is through audio,” he said.

While he hadn’t heard her work specifically, she said the moment stuck with her.

“Even though I’m alone — you’re sort of like a lone ranger listening to the sound of your voice all day — the audio industry really does reach people,” she said. “To hear that he had this disability and it was the only way he could enjoy books really touched my heart.” b

Returning to New Haven: The new dean of the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale and artistic director of Yale Rep is Evan Yionoulis, who served on the drama school faculty and directed numerous plays at Yale Rep. She will take over for James Bundy, who is retiring at the end of June. She is currently the dean and director of the drama division at the Juilliard School.

Two Adventuresome Choices: MTC (Music Theatre of Connecticut) in Norwalk has announced two adventuresome choices for next year’s season. It will open with Harmony (Sept. 11 to 27), the musical written by Barry Manilow, based on the true story of the musical group Comedian Harmonists, who were popular in Germany in the 1920s and early 1930s until Hitler destroyed them. Award Nominations: The New York City awards season is starting, with two groups — the Outer Critics Circle (of which I am a member) and the Drama League — announcing their nominations.

The two have different criteria, so the nominations varied. The OCC gave the new musical The Lost Boys 11 nominations, with the satire Schmigadoon!, based on the popular TV show, receiving eight.

Other shows with multiple nominations were Ragtime, Death of a Salesman, Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York, Fallen Angels, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, and Oedipus. Well-known performers receiving nominations include Rose Byrne, Nathan Lane, John Lithgow, Kelli O’Hara, Joshua Henry, and Laurie Metcalf. The category of best solo performance features Sean Hayes, Jean Smart, and Daniel Radcliffe. It was interesting that productions of Proof, Chess, The Outsiders, Beaches, and Dog Day Afternoon were basically shut out. One performer each from Beaches and Chess did receive a nomination.

Unsettling: Giant is an unsettling play that raises questions about separating the artist from their work. The English

import, starring John Lithgow in a stunning performance, is about author Roald Dahl and his antisemitic beliefs. The events portrayed are fictional, but the show is based on an incident in 1983. Madison Marks 200 Years With Living History Event Press Release from the Madison Historical Society

The Deacon John Grave House will step back in time May 16 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Madison’s incorporation with a living history event, complete with a horseback messenger and a colonial-style toast.

The program begins at 4 p.m. on the lawn with music and games. Admission is free.

At 5:45 p.m., a post rider on horseback — portrayed by North Madison resident Tom Hopkins — will arrive with a message from the General Assembly, re-creating the moment in 1826 when the parish of East Guilford was granted permission to incorporate as its own town.

The rider will deliver the resolution to “Curtis Wilcox,” portrayed by Henry Griggs, who will read it aloud to the crowd.
