Selectmen Hear Housing Proposals For Academy

The Madison Board of Selectmen heard two housing development concepts for Academy School at a special meeting on Jan. 6. The meeting is the first of two that the selectmen will have held on preliminary plans to bring new life to the historic building

and to the downtown area.

The two concepts were presented by 7 Summits Construction and Connolly and Partners, both of whom are proposing to renovate Academy School into an apartment complex on top of land that will remain owned by the town. The construction costs of the projects vary: Connolly’s being somewhere between $8-$10 million and 7 Sum-

mits coming in at just under $24 million.

The selectmen’s Expression of Interest letter specifically asks any developer to keep the historic facade of Academy intact within their building plans, a request to which both 7 Summits and Connolly are committed. To financially support their projects, both

Leading the Way For Talent with Laura Clapp Davidson

Providing opportunities and inclusion in music has been a passion for Guilford resident Laura Clapp Davidson, from her work with the century-old audio technology company Shure to being the newly elected board chair of GreenStage Guilford Live Arts. As a musician who was featured on the bill of the nonprofit’s first music festival - and who understands the logistical side of music promotion - Laura is ready to bring the kind of experience she had and more to musicians along the shoreline.

She is already “really excited” about her new leadership position with GreenStage and, with the support of the nonprofit’s executive director Nellie Kurtzman, has already thought of “a lot of great ideas” on how to build awareness of GreenStage’s mission. The culmination of its grassroots mission and organized musical events is its Live Arts

of the Week Festival. The next iteration will be held in May 2027 and is something of which Laura is most excited to build awareness.

“That’s the thing I’m most excited about because I still hear people saying, ‘What is this?’ Or ‘When the tent goes up on the green?’ That’s something I do in my day job working for Shure is building awareness of a 100-yearold brand, so I’m excited to do that.”

While she says the nonprofit has done well, there is still room to strengthen GreenStage’s position as a performing arts organization on the shoreline, as is a personal goal for Laura following her first year as a volunteer.

“In that first year, I saw who was exactly involved from a com-

munity standpoint from the business side of things,” she says.

“That was really cool to get more familiar with some of the business owners in asking for sponsorships and donations and things like that.”

Coupling this with her experience as a “live audio professional,” she is ready to see “how we can change” to ensure consistent growth for GreenStage. Part of that will be to accommodate talent “who have found their way here from larger markets” and wish to contribute to a thriving performing arts scene on the shoreline.

“That’s what I think we draw on and where we excel,” says Laura. “There’s so much other talent outside of the shoreline, too. I’ve started working with some artists in the northern part of Connecticut. Our state is not big but we have so much talent, so I think it’s exciting to showcase that and have people go, ‘Wait,

Mildred L. Jones Killingworth Mildred L. Jones of Killingworth, returned home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ Dec. 15, 2025, after a brief illness at the age of 98.

Born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Oct. 7, 1927, to the late Anna Hein Langert and Anthony Langert, as well as her late siblings, Arthur, Rose, Dorothy and their spouses. She was also predeceased by her loving husband, Elmer H. Jones; and her son Eric David Jones. She is survived by her daughter Janet Johnson and husband Glenn; daughter-in-law Lisa Cataldo; grandchildren, Melissa McNeely, Benjamin

Johnson (wife Stephanie), Jillene Johnson; and great-granddaughter Hatten Johnson.

Millie attended Earlham College and worked at the Visiting Nurses Association in New Haven until moving to Killingworth in 1969. She became a literacy volunteer and tutored several students, was an avid reader, enjoyed bridge, scrabble, weekly bible studies and many vacations at the family farm in Pennsylvania. She also followed the Boston Red Sox and UConn Huskies women’s basketball. She will be so missed by many, especially her daughter, and remembered for her gentle spirit and kindness.

The burial was held privately at Evergreen Cemetery in Killingworth. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Christ Chapel in Madison.

Roy Alexander Killingworth On Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025, Roy P. Alexander, of Killingworth, passed away at Hartford Hospital. Roy was born in Lakewood, Ohio on Feb. 10, 1933, son of the late Roy P. Alexander, Sr. and Anna (Eyring) Alexander. He was the husband of Sue (Brichford) Alexander and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past September.

Roy was the loving father of Gay A. Butler (Bruce Denison) of Guilford; grandfather of Jennifer Kendall, Kevin Miner (Grace), Benjamin Miner (Sierra), Matthew Butler, and Gregory Butler (Emilie); and great-grandfather of seven. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Alexander of Sebring, FL. He was predeceased by daughter Leona Miner.

Roy graduated from North Ridgeville High School in Ohio, and from Case Institute in Cleveland in 1955. He was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity.

He worked as a Senior Research Chemist at Olin Corporation for 37

years. After early retirement from Olin, he owned and operated a printing shop out of his Killingworth home for ten years, then was an administrative assistant at the United Methodist Church in Clinton for 25 years.

He enjoyed helping out at the church, setting up tables for the Soup Kitchen, making Sunday morning coffee, and operating the elevator for services. One of his favorite pastimes was feeding the Killingworth birds, often filling the feeders several times a day. Roy was always active, always smiling, and will be missed by many.

Friends were invited to a Memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, at the United Methodist Church, 12 Commerce Street, Clinton. Selectmen Hear Housing Proposals For Academy Continued from page 1 developers plan to utilize the state’s Department of Economic and Community Development Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit program, whose criteria for earning the incentive includes maintaining the historic character of a preexisting building that is renovated into a living space.

7 Summits, which specializes in multifamily housing and the preservation of historic buildings for adaptive re-use, has proposed to the town a renovated Academy building with 56 affordable units within its interior and the restoration of its exterior facade and brickwork. The project would see the construction of an additional structure on the left side on the building’s southern end which contain several of the units and provides covered parking.

The company’s CEO Rohan Freeman said his project was aligned with state affordable housing mandates meant to boost the total housing stock, something which Madison and all other Connecticut municipalities are required to meet.

Of the 56 units in 7 Summits’ proposals are 29 one-bedroom units and 27 studio units. Freeman said one of targeted demo-

graphics for the project is low- to moderateincome seniors, for whom new living accommodations are of great need in shoreline towns with housing shortages. 7 Summits is proposing 25 percent of its units be deed-restricted affordable for seniors, which would provide 14 one-bedroom units below market rate.

Freeman said seniors would especially benefit from this type of housing given their proximity by foot to shopping and transit areas in the downtown, along with the Madison Senior Center across the street from Academy. Other units can be for college graduates looking for housing, said Freeman.

Given the living spaces and the projected demographics of residents, Freeman said “We don’t see this project having any impact on the school system.”

7 Summits’ plan also includes a community room, a courtyard, and paddleball courts within the space of the adjacent and maintained athletic fields. A pocket park will connect the parking area to School Street.

and train station that is within walking distance, with an estimated increase of town’s tax base of approximately $3.3 million over 20 years, “paying you [the town] per unit tax payment every year,” said Freeman. The project may also create 100 temporary construction jobs and up to three permanent jobs at the completed facility.

Of the project on a whole, Freeman said, “We envision a very bright and wonderful future for the Academy School building that aligns very well with the Town of Madison’s objectives and also with our mission.”

A comparatively smaller scale project was presented to the selectman by Dmitrios Karouta with Connolly and Partners. The company is proposing to construct 25 one- and two-bedroom units targeted toward “empty nesters, professionals, and local residents seeking in-town living,” read Karouta’s notes. Additionally health and wellness facilities, including a dance and fitness studio and paddleball court, will be of use to the public.

“I believe this plan does align with the town’s goals,” said Karouta, citing privately funded preservation of historical

architecture, higher economic activity and foot traffic in the downtown area, and public use of some amenities.

When asked about the parking situation

by Selectwoman Jen Gordon, Karouta said his initial approach was shared municipal parking given his interpretation of the project as a transit-oriented development.

“But we’re collaborative,” he said. “If there’s room for some additional parking, that can be in the budget.”

The financial outlook of both housing developments - specifically the prospects of being completed under their proposed funding sources and long-term viability to Madison - were of interest to the selectmen. Selectman Scott Murphy noted the $24 million estimate for 7 Summits’ project matched the cost of the proposed community center that was rejected by most taxpayers in a referendum last year.

Murphy asked Freeman, “How good do you feel about that estimate?”

Freeman responded, “I am fairly confident that this number works.”

His colleague, Tichina Pemberton, added that a federal grant from the United States Department of Agriculture that was also intended for the Academy community center project also may still be on the table given the “community benefits” 7 Summits’ development can provide for Madison.

Karouta also expressed confidence in his “low-touch” project’s cost.

The selectmen will deliberate on all four proposals until possibly selecting one later in January. Adjacent to her vocation of audio tech promotion and development with Shure, she is also the co-leader of the company’s civil rights and social action resources group. According to Laura, the intersection of cutting-edge audio equipment and social justice is found in ensuring that the company encourages and practices diversity among its workforce. This approach dates back to the company’s establishment in 1925.

“Sydney Shure, the founder of the company, has always been a pioneer and led the way where diversity is included,” Laura says. “Five years ago, we stood up our associate resource groups. We call them VIBES for values, inclusion, belonging and equity. I stepped up right away. I was the first co-lead for the women’s vibe and it’s something that I’m really passionate about, because being in my industry, it’s very male dominated.”

Laura also sits on the company’s IDEA Council and runs the advisory board for VIBES groups. She is “really proud” to work on these boards and double down on diversifying the Shure workforce, she says.

“We’re not changing our trajectory,” she adds.

An inclusive and equitable approach to

audio technology development also involves democratizing its products. An example of this under Laura’s leadership is uplifting the ‘Ability VIBE’ team to see how products can be more accessible to people with varying physical and mental abilities.

“That has spread to actual product development, and it’s really exciting to see that something we brought to the company to improve the corporate culture is now going to spread wider.”

Outside of the business and organizational-related fields of music, Clapp is a singer-songwriter and musician who has been releasing original music since her debut album “Where are you going?” in 2001. Between then and 2008 she lived in Nashville before the city’s music scene erupted in a renewed fashion in the wake of the eponymous ABC television show. “[Nashville’s] exploded in recent years,” says Laura. “I was still really small townvibey. It was a really good experience.”

Her musical favorites vary across genres and make up some of her biggest influences as a songwriter. They include artists such as Peter Gabrial, Sarah McLaughlin, Tori Amos, and Nine Inch Nails.

Laura is also about to launch a new podcast called “TMI (The Music Industry) with Laura.” It is a successor to her former podcast “Song 43” and will feature friends and musicians who have worked with high-profile musicians and how they’ve balanced those experiences with domestic life and the “mental health element” of life on the road. The first episode will debut on Jan. 23.

Gerd Nelson Madison

Kate Mercer Guilford Kate Mercer (née Catherine Ann Jones), 73, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, artist, and friend, passed away unexpectedly at her home Monday, Dec. 29, 2025.

Kate was born April 17, 1952, in South Weymouth, Mass., to the late Joseph Louis Jones Jr. and Dorothy Jeanne (Jennings) Jones. She was raised in Lancaster, Pa., alongside her older brother Joseph Louis Jones III and younger sister Carolyn Jones Borris.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Kieran Doherty; her daughters, Lauren Mercer, wife of Andrey Zinchuk, and Alyson Merrill, wife of Brett Merrill; and her cherished grandchildren, Lida and Yuri Zinchuk and Harper and Phoebe Merrill. She is also survived by Kieran Doherty Jr. andhis wife, Kelly, and their daughters, Dylan and Gray, as well as Kaitlin Doherty.

Kate attended Manheim Township High School in Lancaster, Pa., and went on to graduate from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, where she studied photography and earned a degree in social work.

Kate and her first husband, Robert “Bob” Mercer, raised their daughters in Stonington. There, Kate built a successful career as a photographer, operating her own photography business for more than 30 years. Through her lens, she

captured countless weddings, family celebrations, and portraits, creating memories that will be treasured for generations. During her years in Stonington, she was a member of the Wadawanuk Club, supported the Child and Family Agency, and volunteered enthusiastically in all of her daughters’ activities.

After retiring, Kate spent her later years in Guilford and Madison, where she delighted in time with her grandchildren, cooking, and gardening. She loved to travel, ride her bike, and play with her grandchildren in her pool. She was a member of the Madison Beach Club and the Madison Garden Club, and she continued to nurture her artistic talents by studying painting at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum.

Kate’s boundless energy, creativity, and warmth filled every room she entered. She was known for her kindness, her laughter, and her deep love of her family. She will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Water’s Edge, 1525 Boston Post Road, Westbrook.

A private burial will be held in the spring at West Cemetery in Madison.

Gerd Nelson, age 94, passed away peacefully on Dec. 22, 2025, surrounded by love. She lived a long, rich life filled with kindness, laughter, and devotion to family and friends.

Born on Feb.19, 1931, in Newark, N.J., Gerd witnessed nearly a century of change and met it with grace, curiosity, and strength. She was known for her warm smile, generous heart, and steady wisdom.

Gerd cherished her family above all else. She found joy in simple moments, shared meals, heartfelt conversations, and time spent with those she loved.

Her life was full in the very best way possible.

She was married to David George Nelson for 62 years, and together they built a life rooted in Madison.

Gerd was a devoted mother to Gary Nelson (Pam) of Florida, Nancy Eastwood (Mark) of Madison, Kenneth Nelson of Guilford, and David Nelson (Danielle) of Madison. She was a loving grandmother to Courtney and Lindsay Nelson, Wesley Eastwood (Nicole), Katherine O’Toole (Ryan), and Kristen Sabatelli (Erik); and a proud greatgrandmother to Ellison Eastwood and Miles O’Toole. She was predeceased by her sister, Liv Rankin.

Gerd owned The Book Swap during the 1970s and remained deeply involved

in her community throughout her life.

She was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church of Madison, served as President of the Madison ABC Program from 1986 to 1989, volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels, and gave her time to Strong House and Act II Thrift Shop.

Gerd had a lifelong love of creativity and the outdoors. She enjoyed gardening, singing, and especially tennis, and was known for her hand-painted Santas and other personal creations.

Nantucket was a place of deep meaning for Gerd and her family. For nearly 50 years, they shared summers there, creating a rare tradition that brought generations together. Nights at Great Point, with beach cookouts and endless laughter, became some of the family’s most treasured memories. Gerd’s playful spirit shone brightest there, and those stories will live on.

Her legacy of love and strength will continue to guide all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Hand Overcomes First Quarter Deficit to Top Guilford 40-35

Physical, chippy, intense, and dramatic are all adjectives to describe Monday’s rivalry matchup between Daniel Hand and the Guilford boys’ basketball.

Both teams entered the game hoping to use the matchup as fuel to turn the season around after rough starts, but the final result came down to the final buzzer.

It was a battle. Hand defeated Guilford 40-35, but the Tigers had to earn every point they got.

Guilford jumped out to an early 16-8 lead after the first quarter, but Hand managed to stifle the Grizzlies’ offensive rhythm and hold them to just four points for the rest of the half.

The defensive focus allowed Hand to crawl back on the scoreboard and ultimately take the lead 22-20 going into halftime.

Guilford, however, stayed resilient and battled back from as high as a nine-point deficit.

Down by three with a chance to tie, Guilford created two good looks to push overtime, but was unable to cash in from behind the three-point line. Hand coach Jimmy Economopoulos said they knew a rivalry game against Guilford would be physical and competitive, but he is pleased with the way the team responded.

“We knew it was going to be like that. Both teams always come out physical. It got heated in there for a minute. They had to warn the benches, but I was happy with how my team responded,” Economopoulos said.

“We don’t have a ton of varsity experience with this group returning from last year, so this was their first time in an environment like this. They rose to the occasion.”

The difference in the ball game for Hand came in the second and third quarters when they forced Guilford off the three-point line.

three three-pointers, outscoring Hand by himself.

Andrew Voytek knocked down one from deep in the first quarter as well. However, in the second quarter, Gumwel Malek was the only one to record a field goal.

Economopoulos said Hand started to play with what the game plan was.

“They have a couple of really great shooters. Sullivan can really fill it up, and the game plan was to really get him off the three-point line,” Economopoulos said. “We weren’t focused enough.

We weren’t paying attention to the game plan, so we just had to regroup a little bit. They were also killing us on the glass. I

didn’t see the effort I was hoping to come out with. We came out flat, but we were able to respond.”

It’s been a tough start to the season for Hand. The team entered Monday night 2-4, and has struggled with the lack of varsity experience. The Tigers graduated most of their starters from last year, and also lost several of their top producers to injury to start the year.

The lack of captains Thomas McCullough and Jonas Markovitz to start the year quickly showed wholes in their production. Hand entered the year with high hopes, but after the loss of All-State guard McCullough, the Tigers are ree-

valuating and taking a game-bygame approach.

The strengths so far have been to play physically and through centers Timothy O’Malley and Andrew Young. The team lacks some perimeter quickness and overall scoring, but the latter has certainly improved since Markovitz has return to the lineup.

Hand has shown an ability to remain resilient over the last two games against Guilford and Hamden. The Tigers were down 13 at halftime against Hamden and managed to come back and win, and erased a first-quarter deficit against Guilford to win back-to-back games.

“It’s definitely been some growing pains and some bumps in the road, but I’m happy with the trajectory that we’re on,” Economopoulos said. “They come in ready to work every day. It’s a good group of guys. We just have to keep getting better…These two games have been a step in the right direction.”

With the latest loss to Hand, Guilford has now dropped three consecutive games and has fallen to 3-5 this season. A factor that contributed to Guilford’s loss on Monday was its reliance on the deep ball, specifically once Hand began to chip away at the lead.

Guilford coach Jeff DeMaio said the team has continued to fight throughout each game to begin the season, and continued to show fight throughout the game against Hand regardless of the scoreboard.

“It was a very physical game, like the Hand-Guilford usually are. That’s old school, low scoring, every possession matters, and sometimes basketball is a very simple game. They made a couple more shots than we made,” DeMaio said, “We needed it, they needed it, and they got it.”

Guilford was led in points by Sullivan with 16 points, but DeMaio took a moment to highlight Malek, who showed up on both sides of the ball. Malek helped spark Guilford’s climb down the stretch with his rebounding, shot-making, and defensive pressure, on and off the ball.

“Number one, he’s a great kid, and two, he’s the hardest worker in the entire program that we have,” DeMaio said. “Every practice, every game, his improvement is amazing, and he has no off switch. He was everywhere tonight and made a couple of shots late. We just didn’t make enough shots.”

Guilford and Hand will meet again on the court on Monday, Jan. 26, at Guilford at 7 p.m.

Responsible Yak Anglers Safeguard Refuge Habitats If you already own a kayak or have acquired one over the holiday and currently use or plan on using it primarily for fishing, then its benefits have thus far been realized. Portability, easy access to previously unavailable locations, and stealthy approaches are just a few named inducements. But there are downsides that yak anglers should understand and, therefore, consider adjusting accordingly.

While the rise of kayak fishing is often celebrated for its low carbon footprint, the sheer volume of new participants and the unique capabilities of these vessels have introduced specific pressures on both inland and marine fisheries.

The primary “negative” impact stems from increased access.

Kayaks allow anglers to reach sensitive, previously untouched nurseries and ‘skinny’ waters that motorized boats cannot enter.

Harvesting pressures and micro-overfishing are major concerns with virgin stocks. The primary concern regarding harvest is not necessarily that one kayaker takes too many fish, but that kayaks open up refuge habitats. In the past, shallow marshes, narrow creeks, and remote ponds acted as natural sanctuaries where fish could grow and spawn away from heavy boat pressure. Kayaks eliminate these safe zones, leading to localized depletion of breeding-age fish.

Additionally, there is a stealth advantage. Because kayaks are virtually silent, they do not trigger the ‘flight’ response in fish that loud outboards do. This higher efficiency in shallow water can lead to high catch-per-uniteffort, which, if combined with harvest rates, can quickly de-populate a small water-dependent ecosystem, of which Connecticut has many.

The ‘Stealth Killer,’ as it is referred to, is release mortality.

Even when kayak anglers practice catch-and-release, the environment of a kayak can inadvertently increase ‘post-release mortality.’ Handling fish in small spaces causes stress. As one knows, releasing a fish from a cramped kayak cockpit often

involves more ‘manhandling’ than on a flat boat deck. Fish are more likely to be dropped, held against hot plastic surfaces, or kept out of the water while an angler fumbles for a camera or pliers.

Then we have deep hooking with live bait. Many new kayak anglers rely on live bait to increase success. Research shows that live-bait fishing leads to a significantly higher rate of ‘guthooking.’ In a kayak, the delay in setting the hook (while managing paddles or pedals) can increase the likelihood of the fish swallowing the bait. Not good if, ultimately, the hooked fish is to be released. As we already know, inline circle hooks to help reduce ‘release mortality’ are mandatory when bait fishing for striped bass.

Not only does water temperature have a relationship between depth, spawning, migration, etc., on fish, but also on oxygen levels.

Fish are sensitive to temperature fluctuations and extremely responsive to oxygen levels.

Kayakers often fish very shallow ‘backwater’ creeks or sundrenched flats where water temperatures are highest. Research again indicates that release mortality skyrockets when water temperatures exceed 77 degrees, as fish’s oxygen demand exceeds what the warm water can provide after a stressful fight. Perhaps, this is another reason causing the release mortality numbers to be grossly skewed by fisheries management’s stock assessment calculations and therefore, requiring corrective measures in need of priority addressing.

Finally, two thoughts to consider when kayaking (inland, estuaries, tidal rivers and near shore marine waters) are habitat intrusion and disturbance.

Kayaks are often marketed as ‘eco-friendly,’ but their ability to go anywhere is a double-edged sword for the environment. Erosion and bank damage can occur!

Unlike motorized boats that use established ramps, kayakers

bank erosion, destruction of riparian vegetation, and increased sedimentation in small streams.

There are prop scars versus ‘hull drag’ to consider. While kayaks do not have propellers to scar seagrass, many anglers drag their hulls across shallow shellfish beds, mud flats and sensitive aquatic vegetation (like eelgrass) to reach deeper pockets of water.

This disrupts the ‘benthonic crust’ - the layer of algae and microorganisms that form the base of the food chain. Additionally, ‘wildlife flushing’ occurs during habitat intrusion and disturbance - as when ospreys, egrets, blue herons and harbor seals that normally feed on small fish are pushed out.

Frequent ‘flushing’ caused by high volumes of kayakers can cause these animals to expend vital energy reserves, potently leading to nest abandonment or reduced survival rates for offspring.

Kayaking today is much different than it was as little as 5 years ago. There are many more yaks on our waters, and it seems as though everywhere one looks, they are for sale. From simple to off-the-shelf versions, custom configurations, ‘spot-locks’ to highend navigation equipment and high-resolution fish finders, fish are not only fighting for their freedom, but today, their survival. Don’t take this wrong! We have covered some really outstanding fishing experiences on these water sleds. Kayaks themselves provide another excellent dimension for recreational fishing and on-the-water fun. However, we, as ‘stewards’ of our natural resources, must take extra precautions to limit any negative impact we may cause to our ecosystem in order to ensure its future health, longevity and vibrant fishery. b

England as high pressure built in from the west. A frontal system then impacted the area with a mostly rain event following a stretch of moderating temperatures, which led to a January thaw. Predawn air temperatures remained mostly in the 30s before reaching 40 degrees, then dropped to the low 20s while daytime temps hit 47 degrees before they dipped to near freezing.

Clouds mixed with sun and some rain marked most days.

North/northeast winds to 30 knots lifted seas to three feet, prompting small craft advisories, while Long Island Sound water temps remained around 33-35 degrees.

Long Island Sound remained rather quiet with the exception of preying eagles and gulls. While on the freshwater side - and during weather events - local waters did provide better action for anglers looking for the challenge.

A continuation of trout and Atlantic salmon fishing, along with the option to catch panfish and other lake and pond fish species feeding intermittently, sparked interest. To some, the recent January thaw opened up certain inland waters but at the same time, many local hard waters gave way to flowing water and slush, leading ice fishers to head up to Connecticut’s north woods or out of state. All in all, if

one wanted to supplement getting a jump on the upcoming season’s to-do list, casting a line in the sweet water was a good option.

Hand Fencing Earns Victories Madison Hoop Dreams Holding Basketball Camps on Over Cheshire, Watkinson Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Over February Vacation

The cost is $60 per day for the six-hour camp. However, to encourage teams to attend, if 3 or 4 teammates are attending, Madison Hoop Dreams will offer a discounted price of $55 per player each day. If there are five or more teammates, the cost is $50 per player per day.

Interested attendees are encouraged to have a parent contact coach Bill Barker with the names of the teammates attending. If possible, teammates will be put on the same team. However, trades may be necessary to balance the competition.

In addition, the organization are combining the three days to offer a discount to families who have a total of four or more days of camp. For example, two siblings attending two or three days will pay $55 per player per day, or three or more siblings attending two or three days would pay $50 per player per day. Madison Hoop Dreams also offers financial assistance where needed.

Madison Hoop Dreams will be at Robert H. Brown School, holding camp on Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 19, and over February vacation on Feb 16. and 17. The organization’s objective is to help each camper improve their skills and increase their enjoyment of basketball.

It is also a service to parents who are working and want a structured, wellsupervised, and fun camp that promotes good sportsmanship and positive social interaction. The camp is for players in grades 3-8 and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Players are encouraged to register early to ensure a spot. The camp limit is 60 players.

The camp is co-ed and draws players from across the 15-town area.

Each day starts with an hour of skill development. Then, campers will participate in competitive basketball games for the remainder of the day. During the games, the coaches instruct to help each player improve their knowledge and understanding of the game. It is an excellent opportunity for all players to improve their skills for the basketball season. In addition, the camp will have a guest speaker to motivate the campers.

feated across the two meets (6–0) to bring his season record to 9–0. Johnson added four victories across the two matches, while Diana rounded out the lineup as Hand held Watkinson to four wins in both meets.

In men’s foil, Hand again earned 5–4 wins in both meets. Senior captain Gedeon LaRiviere led the way, going undefeated across the series (6–0). Senior Declan Mahoney added three victories, while senior David Bixon contributed two wins.

On the girls’ side, the women’s foil team delivered two dominant performances, earning 8–1 wins in both meets. Senior Kathryn Franson and sophomore Ari Lee each went undefeated across the two matches (6–0). Sophomore Ingrid Burton added two victories, while Haggan picked up one win in each meet, continuing her strong start to varsity competition.

The week concluded on Saturday at the JV tournament at North Haven High School. In men’s sabre, Alfie Parkyn and sophomore Max Lane tied for third place.

In men’s foil, Bixon placed 11th overall, while Lee also finished 11th in women’s foil.

The Daniel Hand High School fencing team competed in a full week of action, opening with a home meet against Cheshire High School, followed by a homeand-home series with Watkinson, and closing the week at the JV tournament held at North Haven High School.

Hand opened the week against Cheshire High School. The men’s epee team set the tone, earning an 8–1 win.

Senior captain Robbie Ginsburg led the way, going undefeated (3–0). Senior Henry Diana added two victories, as did junior James Boyd. Senior Alexander Johnson won his lone bout of the evening to complete the team win.

The men’s sabre team followed with another strong performance, earning an 8–1 victory. Senior Joshua Lee and junior Owen Swift each finished 3–0, while senior Alfie Parkyn added two wins. Junior Eli Boyer picked up a key victory in the lineup to help secure the match.

On the girls’ side, the women’s sabre team earned a 6–3 win. Senior captain Kasey Chen and junior Neveah Hastings both went undefeated (3–0), accounting for all six of Hand’s wins in the meet.

In women’s epee, Hand dropped a 6–3 decision. Senior captain Amber Kittel led the squad with two victories, while junior Emily Mathews added one win to round out Hand’s scoring.

A highlight of the Cheshire meet came in women’s foil, where freshman novice fencer Ellie Haggan earned the first varsity win of her career.

Hand later faced Watkinson in a homeand-home series during the week.

Bonalsky Wins Gold, Silver for Philippines’ National Team Over Christmas Break

Over the Christmas break, most high school athletes took the time to rest, sit back, and enjoy time with their families, but standout Hand lacrosse player Ava Bonalsky celebrated the holidays by playing lacrosse internationally.

Bonalsky traveled to Hong Kong and Manila to compete as part of the Philippines’ national team, where she helped the team walk away with multiple medals.

The Philippine Lacrosse Association earned silver in the World Lacrosse Super Sixes Tournament in Hong Kong and then earned gold while playing in Manila.

The unique experience stemmed from putting her name in the hat to play in a smaller tournament in Boston called the Heritage Cup in 2025. To play for the national team, players had to be at least third-generation Filipino, which Bonalsky is from her maternal grandmother.

Bonalsky returned to play for the Philippines’ national team several times after Boston, but was elated when they called her to return for the opportunity to play in the international tournaments. She said what began as just throwing her name into the hat, like throwing spaghetti to the wall, turned into a lifetime experience.

“Visiting both countries and seeing the different culture there was just so amazing, but in order to go to play lacrosse was just the time of my life,” Bonalsky said.

“Being able to play at a high level and really show ourselves was just so much fun, and it was really cool to also see other people celebrating our victories. Honestly, internationally, that was like the first time I’ve ever really felt like other people besides my teammates were celebrating my victories.”

Bonalsky added that all of the spectators, fans, opponents, and even the men’s team were all celebrating each other’s accomplishments.

“It really felt like no matter what the result was for any other team, it felt like a big win for everyone,” she said. “Just being able to be on such a big stage and being able to just play for something bigger than themselves. It was just so amazing to see.”

Lacrosse has been a major part of Bonalsky’s life. At first, she tried a number of different sports, and even picked up taekwondo, where she is a second-degree black belt, but it was in the fourth grade when she first picked up a stick and fell in love with the spring sport.

Last season, she helped lead Hand to a state championship appearance as a junior. Her exceptional play as the team’s goalie allowed her to be the backbone of a successful regular and postseason run. Individually, her development and standout play have also allowed her to garner significant college interest.

Bonalsky has committed to play Division I lacrosse at Hofstra in New York.

Bonalsky said it was a long process that started in eighth grade when she first made up her mind that she would definitely play lacrosse at the collegiate level. She said when it comes to playing club lacrosse, it’s either that players want to reach the highest level possible or they just play for fun.

“There’s really no in between. I immediately fell in love with the sport, and I just knew that I wanted to play,” Bonalsky said. “I did a lot of extra work, and I have literally every coach to thank for how far I’ve come.”

The Connecticut product started as a young player envisioning herself at the highest levels, and once the calls started to come in over the past year, she knew the dream had become a

reality. She said when she got the call from Hofstra Women’s Lacrosse coach Shannon Smith in September, her dream was 100 percent fulfilled.

“Honestly, half the time it still feels like a fever dream,” Bonalsky said. “I’m so excited for it. I’ve always loved watching lacrosse on TV, and being able to say that could one day be me, like having my games live-streamed, it’s just so amazing.”

With all the glamour of being a collegiate athlete, Bonalsky’s mindset is based on her own development. Her excitement stems from understanding how she will grow as a person and how her game will take the next level with more focus and attention at the Division I level.

Her mother, Caroline, said the word proud does not give the feeling justice that she and Ava’s father, Len, feel toward all the accomplishments their daughter has obtained. She added that she also saw a lot of growth from Bonalsky with how quickly she adjusted and flourished during international.

“Ava has always excelled at whatever she wanted to do in life and worked hard at it,” her mother said. “Proud is not the word I can come up with. If there was a better word for it, I would tell you, but it’s immense, whatever this feeling is that we have after watching her in Hong Kong.

We knew that it was going to be a good experience for her, but we just didn’t realize how much she was going to flourish in that environment.”

With one last season to go in high school lacrosse, Bonalsky has been enjoying her senior season so far. In fact, she just wrapped up her four-year volleyball career at Hand, where, as the team captain, she helped lead the team to the second round of the state tournament.

Bonalsky and Hand volleyball exceeded expectations this season after many thought the team would be in a rebuilding role after graduating double-digit seniors from the year before. As the team

leader, Bonalsky focused on building team camaraderie, which held them together throughout the year.

This spring, she will be hoping to lead the lacrosse team back to the state championship and finish the deal this year. The senior believes this season they have all the pieces needed to claim the state title with experience, leadership, and talented underclassmen who will play important roles for the team.

“I really feel like this is our year. I know, especially from my own grade, everybody works so incredibly hard. We have a num-

ber of commits in my grade, and I think coming from last year, we all have the drive to and want to push even harder,” Bonalsky said. “We’ve been putting the pieces together for the past couple of years, and I really feel like this might be the year where everything is all going to click.”

Hand is already hard at work preparing for a tough spring schedule in their winter clinics.

Behind the talent and leadership of Bonalsky, she is certainly hoping to lead Hand to the finish line and add another medal to her growing collection.

Essex Winter Series 2026 Season Begins Jan. 25 The 49th season of Essex Winter Series (EWS) begins with its first concert on Sunday, Jan. 25, at Valley Regional High School, 256 Kelsey Hill Road, Deep River.

Crafting a season that weaves together stellar performances with the celebration of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence, new EWS Artistic Director and flutist Tara Helen O’Connor begins by gathering friends for a program called Timeless Bonds & New Horizons.

Joining O’Connor for the inaugural Mihae Lee Legacy Concert are Ani Kavafian, violin; Peter Wiley, cello; and Shai Wosner, piano—four leading chamber musicians in an unforgettable collaboration to perform works by J.S. Bach, Mel Bonis, and Valerie Coleman, culminating in Schubert’s ravishing Trio in B-flat Major, D. 898.

For the second concert on Sunday, Feb. 22, jazz advisor Jeff Barnhart is thrilled to announce the return of EWS favorite Vince Giordano, who will lead his incredible jazz orchestra, the Nighthawks Orchestra, for an afternoon of hot and sweet music of the 1920s and ’30s. Giordano told Barnhart that the EWS audiences are among the most rewarding he’s performed in front of, averring, “It’s like returning to visit old friends!” Indeed, this concert marks the fifth time the group has graced the EWS stage, making it the most requested jazz ensemble in the history of the series. Be part of this increasingly rare opportunity to experience the incredible jazz orchestra, Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, outside of their New York City home.

The award-winning Trio Animoso will grace the stage at Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek, 55 East Kings Highway, Chester, on Sunday, March 22, for the third EWS concert. This phenomenal group of young artists—Sophia Jean, flute; Julian Seney, viola; and Subin Lee, harp—formed at Yale and won first prize at the Angel Padilla Crespo International Harp Competition. Having captivated audiences worldwide, Chanticleer, the Grammy Award-winning choral ensemble of 12 male voices, again appears on stage with a soaring, spellbinding program called “Without A Song.” This “orchestra of voices” will close the season on Sunday, April 12, at Valley Regional High School.

Family-Friendly Event Honors MLK at New Haven Museum A family friendly celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. will be held at the New Haven Museum on Saturday, Jan. 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. The theme of the all-ages MLK Day at New Haven Museum (NHM) will be Dr. King’s acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

The event will include viewings of Dr. King’s inspiring Nobel acceptance speech and participation in creating a colorful community mobile inspired by the speech. Families and friends will gather in the Clement Room to make their own contributions to a fun, mixed-media mobile using assorted materials and supplies generously donated by EcoWorks, a local recycling shop that promotes the use of surplus materials for art, craft, and education.

There will also be a reading nook with 10 community/MLKrelated books from New Haven Free Public Library and a coloring corner with coloring pages relating to Dr. King’s quotes.

NHM educator Rohanna Ssanyu Delossantos notes the event is inspired by the following quote from Dr. King’s Nobel Peace Prize speech: “I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and

Clinton Art Society Presents Winter Members Juried Exhibition Press Release from the Clinton Art Society

The Clinton Art Society (CAS) announces it is launching the 2026 exhibition season with its winter juried members exhibition on view from Monday, Jan. 26, through Thursday, April 23. The opening reception on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. is free and open to the public.

“Wintertime is the perfect season to experience the

light, color, and warmth of art,” said CAS President Robin Hammeal-Urban. “We are honored to have Laura Leonard as our esteemed juror. We invite the community to visit the show and discover our accomplished local and regional artists who work in a vast array of styles and media,” she added.

MHS Hosts Frederick Lee Lectures and Related Exhibit Press Release from the Madison Historical Society

In 2026, Madison will celebrate the 200th anniversary of its incorporation. In honor of this special occasion, the Madison Historical Society (MHS) is holding events and exhibits dedicated exclusively to the people and stories of Madison.

To kick off the year, the MHS is hosting its 19th annual Frederick Lee Lectures.

This trio of lectures spans the era of indigenous people through current times.

The first lecture takes place on Sunday,
