Leadership changes in Branford and North Branford highlighted news in 2025.

Here is our month-by-month roundup.

January First Night returned with events hosted by the Town of Branford and Branford Parks

and Recreation, welcoming residents downtown to ring in the new year together.

At Branford High School, students combined engineering and empathy through Go Baby Go, adapting ride-on cars for children with mobility challenges. Superintendent of Schools Christopher Tranberg also presented a proposed 6.8 percent budget increase, launching the start of the annual budget discussion cycle.

Northford Community Church, formerly Northford Congregational Church, continued its evolving mission under the leadership of Pastor John Vigneri. At the same time, the town formally reconstituted its Agriculture Commission, renewing its focus on farmland preservation and local food systems.

An Introduction to Shore’s New Sports Editor

Welcome to 2026!

We open the new year with town-bytown wrap-ups of all the major news in all five of our Shore Publishing publications, but we also start 2026 with a new sports editor, Serenity Bishop, who has replaced Gabby Maljanian, who did such a great job ensuring high school coverage over the past few months. Gabby has become a leading sports podcaster in Connecticut, and we wish her well.

Serenity Bishop is a known quantity to many of you. A resident of Bristol, he has freelanced for Shore in the past and his experience includes work as senior sports editor for The Bristol Press, where he covered both the WNBA and UConn basketball.

My impression of Serenity is that he loves all sports and will do a great job covering the local high school sports scene, from Deep River to Branford. He hit the ground running just last week by knocking

out year-end reviews of all the local teams who made an impact in the area in 2025, so he quickly became familiar with the best of the best. He’ll be covering all sports, including ones that sometimes get short shrift.

We at Shore Publishing believe in the power of local sports to motivate students who otherwise might be floundering and teach them several important skills, including dedication, leadership, teamwork and the importance of hard work.

Ask any high school athlete what effect sports teams had on their lives, and they will inevitably cite these important qualities and more.

We rely heavily on local coaches to provide us information to cover your teams, but not every coach has the time or inclination to do so. So we will count sometimes

on others, including athletic directors, parents and even student athletes themselves to keep us on our toes and give local teams their moment in the sun. Serenity has covered basketball, football, baseball, hockey and many other sports. He knows the turf, and he’s going to be out there in the stands and locker rooms compiling information in a firsthand way. Whatever he can’t cover, he will get in the paper thanks to the dedication of coaches, a few freelance writers and help from the public who have an interest in giving students credit for all their hard work.

Please welcome him to your town when you see him out and about, and help provide him the information he needs to tell a complete, interesting and accurate.

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly congratulate Peter Berdon on being re-elected as the chairperson of the Branford Board of Education. It is a testament to his political prowess and the high regard in which he is held that he was re-elected by such a large majority of an overwhelmingly Democratic Board.

This is even more noteworthy, as it follows a recent Blue Wave in the elections at the national, state, and municipal levels.

Education. Approximately half of any town’s budget is allocated to their Board of Education. People move into towns, or out of them, because of the school systems.

Residents choose to stick with the public school system or go with a private school for their children based on a school system’s reputation, quality, and learning environment. As a parent of two Branford Public Schools students, I congratulate Mr. Berdon and wish him and the Branford Board of Education success.

State Sen. Christine Cohen and State Reps. Robin Comey and Moira Rader welcomed $100,000 for the Branford Food Pantry. The state Bond Commission voted unanimously this month to approve the funding.

Cohen, Comey and Rader submitted requests to the Bond Commission for this funding. The funding will replace an aging conveyor belt which moves thousands of pounds of food into the food pantry everyday. The food pantry will also use these funds to upgrade their flooring to a commercial grade flooring for durability and to comply with health regulations.

The Branford Food Pantry provides groceries to over 200 families every week and provides critical support to Branford families in need: More than 30% of Branford students qualify for free or reduced lunch programs 1 in 6 residents struggle with food insecurity 4,272 Branford households are strug-

gling to make ends meet, 39% of all households Branford is also the home to as many as 3,852 Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (ALICE) families with an additional 874 families living in poverty.

“Approval of this bond issue on behalf of the Branford Food Pantry means so much to us,” said Jaye Andrews, President of the Branford Food Pantry. “We are located on the basement level and each week we move thousands of pounds of food in and out of the Pantry as we serve over 200 Branford households struggling to make ends meet. This funding will enable us to replace our ancient conveyor system — our life line for moving so much food — with a safe and reliable conveyor. Additionally, we are able to make interior improvements which will provide a cleaner, healthier environment for our clients and the dozens of volunteers that make the Branford Food Pantry come to life. We are truly grateful to everyone who stood up for our 100% volunteer organization and our community to make this funding possible.”

A beginner/intermediate-level hatha yoga series runs Tuesdays from 5:45 to 7 p.m. through Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Trinity Church Hall, 1009 Main Street, Branford.

Douglas Bowden Jr. Branford Douglas W. Bowden Jr., born Feb. 2, 1934, passed away suddenly on Dec. 19, 2025, at the age of 91. He was happily married for 47 years to Joan MacKinnel Bowden, who predeceased him in 2005.

Doug was born in New Haven Feb. 2, 1934, son of the late Douglas W. Bowden Sr. and Myrtle Wright. He served in the United States Army. After his service, he worked for many years in the Environmental Lab with the United Illuminating Company until his retirement.

He is survived by his children, Scott (Donna) Bowden of East Lyme and Karen (Scott) Gell of Branford. He was

immensely proud of his four grandchildren: Kevin (Megan) Gell, Eric (Emily Tyler) Gell, Dr. Acacia Bowden, and Isabelle Bowden — each of whom brought him tremendous joy. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Pogmore of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews.

He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

Relatives and friends were invited to a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday morning, Dec. 23, with a service at 11 a.m. at the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford. Burial followed in East Lawn Cemetery, East Haven. Branford Food Pantry Hours The Branford Food Pantry, 30 Harrison Avenue, has revised its hours on Tuesdays to assist neighbors who need food support. The pantry is now open Tuesdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m., as well as Fridays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The Branford Food Pantry provides supplemental groceries for individuals, seniors, and families in need. It also provides weekly snack packs for school-aged children. It has returned to normal operations and encourages any Branford resident in need of food assistance to come in. Branford and North Branford 2025: Year in Review Continued from page 1

April Branford welcomed a new town planner, celebrated 15 years as a Tree City USA, and marked anniversaries for local institutions, including Parthenon Diner’s 40th year.

Community fundraising reached new heights as Braffle sold out, raising more than $60,000, while Jessica Cavallaro was named BHS house principal. Public health initiatives expanded through regional Narcan training in response to rising overdoses, and cemetery preservation funding arrived through state grants.

In North Branford, the Town Council approved a $65 million budget, sending it to referendum. The town also welcomed Poppop’s Coffee Shop to Northford and celebrated educators recognized at the Catholic School Educators Mass.

February The Branford Police Department announced all services would remain operational during headquarters renovations, while the town welcomed Gina Izzo as director of Parks, Recreation, and Senior Services.

Student achievement was highlighted as the Branford High School drone team qualified for the Northeast Championship.

The Board of Education continued budget deliberations, recommending a 4.6 percent net annual increase and inviting residents to help shape the future of school facilities.

In North Branford, winter traditions continued at Dudley Farm Museum’s maple sugaring demonstrations, while North Branford High School’s literary magazine, Kaleidoscope, earned national recognition. Community generosity was evident as Snuggles for Shoreline Seniors exceeded its donation goals, while environmental progress advanced through a Farm River invasive species control grant. The town also launched energy-saving initiatives and expanded digital literacy programming for older adults.

March Branford VFW hosted its second annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans breakfast, while Murphy School recognized student leadership through its Student Safety Patrol.

Plans advanced for major community events, including the return of Braffle, and Branford officially declared April as Volunteer Month. State representatives visited Branford for an early childhood care and education discussion, and the town’s $144.45 million budget review process formally began.

In North Branford, the town recognized service and dedication, honoring public safety personnel for lifesaving actions and acknowledging Trish Mase for her years of service on the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The Branford Jazz on the Green series for 2025 concluded Thursday, Aug. 28, with a perPublic safety dominated headlines after formance by the Latin Jazz Quintet featuring Albert Rivera on saxophone, Luques Curtis on two people were rescued from Branford bass, Damian Curtis on piano, Marcos Torres Jr. on drums and Nelson Bello on congas.

The show was a makeup performance from its original July 31 date, which was postponed due to weather.

Baseball and Softball The North Branford Thunderbirds had a successful spring season between their baseball and softball teams in the Shoreline Athletic Conference Tournament.

Both teams continued their winning streaks within the conference with their 2025 titles.

The North Branford baseball team won back-to-back Shoreline Conference titles this season after coming off a 2024 victory over Haddam-Killingworth last season.

The 2025 conference title game marked the third consecutive season that North Branford had reached the final game.

North Branford fell to Valley Regional in 2023.

In 2025, North Branford finished an impressive regular season 16-4, en route to earning the second seed in the Class S State Tournament. Standout player and captain Matt Scalia was named Shoreline Conference Player of the Year and led the Thunderbirds to the conference title.

The muchanticipated three-day festival of brandnew works will light up the Goodspeed campus with a weekend filled with insider events, seminars, a cabaret, staged readings, and a special 20th Anniversary Festival Concert.

The Festival of New Musicals kicks off Jan. 16 at The Goodspeed with a staged reading of Miss Hysteria. Inspired by true events, Miss Hysteria follows the wrongly institutionalized Louise Gleizes, a young actress in 19th-century Paris, who strikes a bargain to perform symptoms of “hysteria” for freedom and discovers the power—and peril—of owning her own story. It features a book and lyrics by Laura Schein and Ben Zeadman with music by Zeadman.

The highlight on Saturday, Jan. 17, will be a staged reading of F Word, a heartwarming coming-of-age story about Tessa, a teenager on the brink of aging out of the foster care system, as she faces the future and finds family where she least expects it.

Belle Vie Café Gallery Showcases Local Artist Press Release from Belle Vie Café Loft Gallery

The Belle Vie Café Loft Gallery is currently featuring the artwork of Patricia Shoemaker, a Shoreline Arts Trail artist whose paintings explore the relationship between place, light, and everyday life.

Harmony of Land and Life: Reflections from an Italian Journey showcases Shoemaker’s work, which is rooted in a deep fascination with place—how light, atmosphere, and human presence combine to form the quiet poetry of a landscape. In this exhibition, Shoemaker presents a series of oil paintings created during her time in Italy, where the rhythm of the countryside and the energy of its cities offered an endless source of inspiration.

The Fountain, oil, by Patricia Shoemaker “My figurative and landscape paintings grow from direct experience: walking through olive groves, studying the geometry of narrow streets, watching people weave their stories through piazzas. Each painting is an attempt to hold onto those fleeting moments when light transforms the ordinary into something resonant and meaningful. Ultimately, this body of work reflects what Italy offered me: a conversation between land, people, and light.”

Shoreline Arts Alliance is now accepting applications for the 46th annual Scholarships in the Arts program. This program is open to high school juniors and seniors who are pursuing further study in the arts and reside within Shoreline Arts Alliance’s 24-town region—which covers all of Middlesex County, Madison, Guilford, North Branford, Branford, East Haven, Lyme, East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Salem. Deserving students will be awarded scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,000.

The winner in each category will receive a $1,000 scholarship for continuing education and/or supplies as well as a mentorship from a professional artist. Applications are now available through the Shoreline Arts Alliance website and will be accepted through Jan 8. Applicants will be contacted to schedule interviews and auditions.

Students who are interested in the arts and reside in the 24-town region are encouraged to apply.

The applications are judged by professional, working artists in each field of study who provide valuable feedback to each student.
