A journey through Connecticut’s antique shops reveals a reverence for history, craftsmanship and the stories behind treasured objects. By Nicholas Checker

sentient communion? After all, these are really nothing more than inanimate objects. Right? Yet, recent interviews with shop owners and their clientele over a widespread arc of Connecticut indicate an absolute reverence and respect for the cherished items found on display.

“We keep furniture out of landfills,” says Mary Jane Ferlan, co-owner with her husband, Chris Denneny, of Granary Antiques, situated in the stately Velvet Mill complex on 22 Bayview Avenue in Stonington. “We honor original materials and let age be an asset rather than something to hide.”

And indeed, their striking furniture displays include nineteenth-century European pine and American pine—all scrubbed and refinished lovingly by Ferlan, who runs the business full time—along with smaller antiques and home décor that complement the furniture pieces. At Grand & Water Antiques at 135 Water Street in the nearby Borough of Stonington, owner Deborah Norman, also a town selectwoman, has an endearing love affair evident in 10 on the shoreline

the pure sentiment she expresses for many of the treasured pieces on display. “It’s the finding—the discovery of items that simply capture your fancy, while also knowing you are going to be parting with a number of them through sales, however attached you may become,” says Norman. “You develop an instinct for the texture and colors of furniture, or the creative design on plates, or the unique character of a classic grandfather clock, or a French mirror that actually reveals the very spot where the crown of the monarch at the time would have been.” A trek through any of the antique shops in our Constitution State of Connecticut may well be akin to a tour through our civilization’s growth—“museum hopping,” if you will— while examining the ingenious craftsmanship of humankind at its behavioral best. Utilizing creative skills to produce the comforts and delights that enrich our lives is where we shine most brightly.

“The biggest thrill of our business is finding new homes for antique furniture that seemed likely to be tossed out,” Ferlan adds. Her husband, Denneny, agrees. “It’s seeing the beauty and craftsmanship of something unappreciated, such as industrial furniture that might be 200 years old, yet still has integrity. That makes it well worth being refurbished.” New London resident and shopper Robert Costello speaks poignantly of the sentimental value harbored in family items such as clocks, books, bureaus, dishware and old-time Victrolas. “You grow very attached to a lot of them; they become like ‘sentimental orphans,’ and you hope when you’re gone these belongings you’ve cherished will find new homes where they can be respected and appreciated.” It’s curious how shopkeepers and clientele apparently view antiques in a similar light. Owners of these venerable businesses acquire their wares in a variety of ways, some involving trips to places like Amish country in Pennsylvania
and investing in the unique, exemplary craftsmanship there; other items are acquired at auctions, while some may include donations.
Grand &
Water A ntiques located at 135 W ater Street in the nea rby Borough of Stonin gton
Ferlan, Denneny and Norman have also pointed to the growing number of younger clientele—couples even in their 20s—seeking to add décor to their homes. And, given the age range of antique items—some dating back hundreds of years—there is a distinct historical trail of Western and worldwide culture, ergo, the sense that you might find yourself exploring how our species has developed its own air of dignity and refinement through painstaking, labor-of-love craftsmanship. And speaking of historical appeal, Norman points out how vintage American flags are a big draw this year at Grand & Water Antiques. “This especially resonates with our history 11

and due significantly to the nation’s 250th Anniversary,” she emphasizes. Norman adds another element that delights antique shopkeepers— making house calls. “There, you learn more about the origins and journeys of precious antiques. It’s fulfilling to discover how they’ve come down from a family, as well as the educational aspects behind their stories.” Andrew Lowe, owner of The Trove on 1353 and 1383 Boston Post Road in Old Saybrook, agrees with the premise of antique shops being akin to visiting a museum. “I think that a good antique shop is perhaps better than a museum. Nearly everything in a shop can be touched, examined and ultimately owned if you want. In the process of selling an item, a vendor learns a good deal about it and can often help share what makes it special or rare,” Lowe explains. “While a museum may elevate objects onto

pedestals, and rightly so, these same objects tend to be so precious they cannot be held by the average person. But even the fanciest antique shops are going to allow you to get right up close and personal with an object. And, for all but the most fragile of items, you’ll be able to hold in your own hands each one for your consideration.”
This Griswold No. 4 cast iron skillet boasts the clean, iconic small logo stamping on its ultra-smooth bottom surface. Photo courtesy of The Trove
Lowe goes on to explain that browsing isn’t the same in an antique shop as, say, window shopping in a department store. “Hopefully you’ll make a connection to some event in your past or from the past in general. Seeing an object from up to 200 years ago makes it relevant to your own life. Everything in an antique store is unique and has lived a whole life prior to its time in the store.” Three such alluring antiques in Lowe’s Trove that contain that museum appeal include a Persian Yalameh rug, a vintage Pepsi button sign from the

1950s and a Griswold cast-iron pan, circa 1920, among a treasure trail of others that only a trek through his pair of inviting shops can reveal. In Branford, at 785 Main Street, we find Atlantis Antiques—a business run by Guy Ferraro with extreme success for 52 years. It is his fourth store. Ferraro knows extensively the distinguished world of antiques and the appeal they hold in the hearts of his clientele. “The most important thing people can expect when they visit my store is a great variety of items from all over the world, where I either purchased them, or had them made to my requirements,” he says. “Over time, I have purchased and manufactured products from many countries.”

Ferraro takes pride in being an accomplished world traveler, with a keen eye for authenticity. “Besides what I provide for visitors in letting them know if something is old and where it was made, I also provide a free appraisal service to solve any mysteries that might need to be unraveled,” he adds. “This is an area where I have exceptional experience … In the past, I have identified items

they may purchase at a very reasonable price. It’s the largest antique showroom in New England—not a group shop, but owned entirely by me.” There are also different brands of antique stores. At 199 Providence Street in Putnam, Frankly Toys & Antiques focuses on items with a specific nostalgic appeal. This is a combined vintage toy collection, along with a store that offers an impressive variety of houseplants and herbs. This unique pair of connected shops is owned and run by retired couple Frank and Linda Dessautels. An archway separates the two businesses that are starkly different: one displays a wide variety of decorative plants, as well as pottery, antique containers, herbal wreaths, old kitchen items and hardware — like latches and knobs for dressers — antique jewelry and even animal figurines, while the other offers a veritable population of classic old toys, capable of nostalgically whisking adults back to childhood times when life seemed simpler and more innocent. 14 on the shoreline

A curated selection of vintage Disney pins is displayed on a movie clapperboard organizer from the Disney-MGM Studios era. Photo courtesy of Frankly Toys & Antiques
“There’s a definite Mom’n’Pop feel to our business,” Linda sums up. “Small and cozy.” And it all began by happenstance. “Back in the 1980s I came across a tin windup toy, where G.I. Joe and his K-9 pup played in a Li’l Abner band,” Frank explains. Li’l Abner dates back to the 1940s. “You wind it up and it plays.” That was the initial muse for Frank to acquire more and more vintage tin toys that would one day lead to his opening of a shop where people might recall their childhood passions and bring back into their lives something that had delivered such joy during those memorable years. “People grow up and they want their toys back,” Frank adds. “My store has become a home for wayward toys. It means something, knowing there’s a brand-new home for these toys where they’ll bring joy to somebody else.” The combined shop of the Dessautels has been open since 2017. Among Frank’s collection of enduring, venerable toys are action figures like Superman, Batman and other Marvel Comics heroes, Star Wars figures, My Little Ponies, Care Bears and a fabulous Rin Tin Tin Fort Apache set (from the popular TV series of the 1950s). And his shop features an absolute special: the Redline Hot Wheels—miniature cars that thrilled children years ago and continue to do so to this very day.

“Linda and I love running our combined shops and we thoroughly enjoy being busy. Most of all, we enjoy the people who walk through our doors.” This is a consistent theme with all antique shop owners—a place in the world where visitors tour the time-honored items, engage in conversation filled with warmth and, during that brief departure, leave the outside world behind while basking in the healthy respite of a fascinating heritage — be it refurbished furniture, vintage American flags, dishware with creative designs, sculptures, a classic old
grandfather clock, elegant household plants or the joyful magic contained in past childhood toys. There are antique shops awaiting visitors in nearly every town in this state. They’re as prevalent as butterflies on a glowing sunny morning, and every bit as beautiful and charming. Do take the time for a visit — and consider the poignant viewpoint of shopper Robert Costello: “Let’s hope these precious heirlooms do not wind up as ‘sentimental orphans.’”

S
andwiched between the charming road of Lyme Street and the Lieutenant River, the Florence Griswold Museum, the home of American Impressionism, is situated on a 12-acre campus in Old Lyme. The beautiful location is where its namesake, Florence Griswold, a member of one of the town’s oldest families, was raised while her father, a sea captain, sailed boats between New York and London. In 1899, Griswold opened her house as a boardinghouse for anyone who came knocking. Artists from New York visited the stunning house and surrounding landscape and wanted to move in every summer, beginning the Lyme Art Colony. The house and grounds became a place not only for artists to live, but for creating a chapter of American history and art that the museum continues to celebrate today.
Like the artists in the nineteenth century, David Rau, Senior Director of Education and Visitor Engagement, fell in love with the magical place of the Florence Griswold Museum. “I’ve been at the museum for almost three decades and love to see it tell Connecticut’s art story while continuing to grow, morph and do new things,” says Rau. The museum was looking for a creative way to use its large acreage of land to bring new visitors to Old Lyme, sparking wonder and curiosity. “I had friends who had talked about fairy villages in towns like Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and pitched this idea of the Wee Faerie Village,” says Rau. “Artists would make little fairy houses or dwellings to be installed in the nooks and crannies of our beautiful Florence Griswold Museum grounds.” The first year, the museum had more than 10,000 visitors explore the grounds in only three weeks. “We thought fairies were hitting some magical chords with the guests, and the unbelievably talented artists are making these amazing, captivating houses for us,” says Rau. Rau invites artists to create around 30 installations for the Wee Faerie Village based on the chosen theme of the year. The Wee Faerie Village takes place in October when the grounds change from shades of green to gold.

Inside the Historic Griswold House, the first-floor dining room is preserved to look exactly as it did in the 1900s when famous American Impressionist boarding guests lined the walls and doors with original paintings.
The theme for the 2026 season is “Gemstone Station: A Town that Rocks.” Each artist has been asked to choose a unique mineral, rock, precious metal or gem to base their fairy creation on. “Rocks are a different way of thinking about nature, and we can never do enough to make people aware of how precious the earth is,” says Rau. “Even if this helps a little bit for people to be outside and think of the natural resources we need to take care of, it’s wonderful.”
B. Miller, based out of Chicago, to create illustrations of fairies based on the theme to put on stickers and the maps for guests to help envision the fairies’ homes. This year, the illustrations will feature a fairy rock band with a lead singer, drummer, guitarist and backup singer—all with wings made of minerals.
The villages depict places where fairies would live whether it be a house, building, or garden. “I love the challenge of coming up with a new spin to get the artists excited to work on, get creative juices flowing and provide something new for guests,” says Rau. “The artists this year have picked pearls, gold, silver, red coral, rubies and other gifts from the earth that will inspire a haunted house, cabinet of curiosity, garden, or cottage.” The fairies are invisible to the eye, and guests only see where they live. To give the concept of what they would look like, Rau creates fairy mascots to embody the theme. The Florence Griswold Museum hires an illustrator, Aaron
When guests arrive at the main entrance, the map will guide them around the campus. At each stop, visitors can read the title of the installation, the artist and a description of the inspiration. For an additional interactive element, each artist is asked to hide something in the fairy house that visitors have to find. For instance, guests might be asked to find the silver star hidden in one of the rooms. “People won’t leave the grounds until they find every hidden item,” says Rau with a laugh. “It creates a game for families or school field trips and nurtures a closer look at the details and admires the months of hard work each artist puts into their creation.”

Visitors navigate the tree-lined pathways of the 12-acre campus in Old Lyme to discover hidden faerie dwellings.
Guests lean in close together to study a detailed woodland fairy display. Each unique installation encourages guests to slow down and observe the months of hard work put in by local artists.
A group of young visitors discovers a cleverly hidden fairy installation camouflaged by dried moss, twigs and leaves.
The Wee Faerie Village brings excitement as the installations magically appear and disappear at the end of the exhibition. The campus is busy and bustling with families talking, laughing, and reading the history of each artist’s work while pointing out a bowl made from an acorn. “I enjoy seeing the joy of the explosion of creativity the Wee Faerie Village brings to the artists and guests, and it’s such an enchanting time at the museum as it invites guests to explore the site as a whole.”
During this season’s Wee Faerie Village, visitors can explore the Patchwork exhibition, which celebrates the 250th anniversary of America. The juried exhibition of 86 Connecticut artists showcases something interesting between the state and the birthday, from jewelry to painting and quilts.
Visitors can also wander the first floor of the Historic Griswold House as it was in the 1900s, when the artists stayed. The second floor showcases the Lyme Art Colony paintings, showing local scenes, Tonalist paintings with a more monochromatic theme and American Impressionist works.
“It’s a great way for people who don’t know about the museum, but love fairies, to visit and come back year after year,” says Rau.
The Florence Griswold Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and the Wee Faerie Village runs September 26 to November 1. Visit flogris.org to learn more. 27

C
henzo’s Italian Kitchen & Bar is not your classic Italian restaurant. This is intentional on the part of co-owners Vincent “Vinny” Balisciano and Caleb Ellinas.
They were inspired to open the restaurant by their passion for hospitality, Balisciano says. They dreamed of a place where people can gather, whether for celebrations, date nights or just a casual outing with friends.
Ellinas says that when they chose Higganum, there was a lot of uncertainty about what the community would think. “We felt confident that the community needed a space like this; we were unsure if the community wanted it,” he says. However, Balisciano and Ellinas were met with a response that exceeded their expectations.
31
The restaurant’s bar and lounge area features a large oak bar, high-top seating.
Chenzo’s gluten-free summer salad includes asparagus, peas and radish topped with crumbled feta, toasted almonds, basil, avocado and lemon dressing.
The dining room at Chenzo’s Italian Kitchen and Bar features modern Italian decor, with black-and-white portraits of famous figures, green and beige walls, and dark wood tables and chairs.
Chenzo’s orecchiette broccoli rabe and sausage features crumbled Italian sausage tossed with broccoli rabe, garlic, roasted tomatoes and Parmesan.
Chenzo’s was made with relaxation in mind, and that is apparent through the modern Italian décor. Beige and green walls are decorated with black-and-white portraits of Sophia Loren, Al Pacino, Audrey Hepburn and others.
“We wanted to open up our menu to a larger audience that may be restricted from this style of cuisine,” he says. “Now more people can enjoy our specialty items like arancini, homemade fried mozzarella and chicken parmesan.”
Balisciano and Ellinas give guests the freedom to choose their own dining experience. Some prefer to hang out in the bar and lounge room, with its high-top tables and large oak bar. Some families prefer to gather in the dining room for a more relaxed experience. The restaurant also offers private dining for special events and intimate dinner parties.
Chef Jorge Ramos, who opened Chenzo’s with Balisciano and Ellinas, has been in the business for more than two decades. He helped develop the restaurant’s gluten-free menu, finding ways to prepare familiar Italian dishes without sacrificing quality, Balisciano says.
They also try to keep their menu fresh, updating it twice a year to “keep it interesting,” says Ellinas. They emphasize the friendliness of their staff, who are always willing to guide guests through the menu. The menu includes small plates, specialty pizzas, entrées like chicken parmigiana and Tuscan salmon, as well as wines, cocktails and desserts. Many people are surprised to find that 80 percent of the menu is gluten-free, Balisciano says. They are proud to offer this to their guests and make the menu more accessible to those who may otherwise be restricted from this style of cuisine. 32 on the shoreline
The restaurant’s arancini, for example, are made with Arborio rice, Parmesan and Fontina cheeses, pancetta, red pepper aioli and pickled onions. Chicken parmigiana, another Italian staple, is prepared with lightly breaded chicken, marinara sauce and mozzarella and served with penne pasta. “Most people are shocked when we tell them what they’re eating is gluten-free,” he says. The menu also offers options beyond its classic Italian dishes, including The Chenzo pizza, topped with red sauce, garlic, ricotta, meatballs and fresh basil, and lobster ravioli

with fresh lobster meat, lobster brandy cream sauce, shallots, garlic, roasted tomato and spinach. Just as the community welcomed them with open arms, Balisciano and Ellinas are excited to give back, which they have made one of their core values. They want to continue building the relationships they have with community members. “We talk to our customers who happen to be our neighbors, and those conversations are turning into friendships,” Balisciano says. Last year, they supported Project Graduation, an all-night celebration for students held on the night of graduation. They have also supported local sports teams and several other causes and events in town, Ellinas says.
“One of our core values is giving back, and Chenzo’s is allowing us to do that. We can’t wait to see what the future holds,” he says. Balisciano, 30, and Ellinas, 25, are grateful that the town took a chance on two relatively young people who had a dream. “We dove head-first into a very unpredictable business in a very small town,” Ellinas says. Balisciano says they “risked just about all we had” and remain grateful every day for the community’s continued support.
Chenzo’s Italian Kitchen & Bar is located at 968 Killingworth Road in Higganum. The restaurant is open from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit chenzospizza.com. 33

R
oberto’s Log Cabin is the result of generations of a family interested in the restaurant business, all on the backbone of Roberto D’Eliseo’s grandmother.
D’Eliseo grew up in the industry. His great-uncle, Nicola, started Kenney’s Restaurant in Hartford, now called the Red Rock Tavern, and it stayed with the family through his uncle Nick and cousin Donald. “It’s in my blood,” he says. “I was learning the restaurant business without even knowing I was learning it.” From a young age, D’Eliseo says his grandmother, Emma, taught him what it meant to work hard, treat people right and do things the right way in business. His mother, Gemma, taught him another important lesson: how to make people feel welcome. While working as a waitress at Kenney’s, she was well-loved for her warm hospitality, he says.

A view down the bar showcases an extensive draft line selection, complete with a football-themed tap handle highlighting the restaurant’s proud partnership with local sports.
D’Eliseo eventually decided to venture out on his own with the full support of his family. Roberto’s Log Cabin opened in Lebanon in 2002, followed by Roberto’s Real American Tavern in East Windsor in 2015 and Roberto’s Prime Catering in 2022, which serves throughout the area. At the Log Cabin, however, D’Eliseo has remained committed to the small-town atmosphere that first drew him to Lebanon. “We’re very busy, but if I’m there, I’ll say hi to everybody,” he says. “I’ll come to your table and introduce myself.” He wants customers to feel connected to the restaurant and the town, and regularly asks for their feedback. His social media presence has expanded that reach, with TikToks and reels on Facebook and Instagram bringing people from near and far into the restaurant.

Owner Roberto D’Eliseo prioritizes a welcoming, small-town atmosphere inside the restaurant where he can personally greet every diner.
Freshness is another core value. D’Eliseo’s parents were born in Roccacasale, a small town in Abruzzo, Italy, where the family made everything themselves.
the manager and bar manager, have been with D’Eliseo since day one. Over time, he says, they become more than employees.
“Fresh and local weren’t trends for us—it was just the way we lived,” he says.
“It’s family now,” he says. “It’s different.”
The restaurateur sources from neighboring farms whenever fresh produce is available. In the warmer months, that means local corn, tomatoes, basil, eggplant, zucchini and squash make their way into the kitchen. He highlights the producers he works with—including Northrop Farm and Liberty Hill Farm and Greenhouses, the latter located just across the street from the Log Cabin—through social media. The same commitment extends to the people working behind the scenes. Many of the kitchen staff, as well as
Bite-sized pieces of premium steak piled over a bed of mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, and red onion, finished with a mountain of crumbled blue cheese and a side of vinaigrette.
D’Eliseo works alongside his staff, a philosophy that goes back to his grandmother, who believed a kitchen full of happy people could be tasted in the food. Her influence can even be tasted in the restaurant’s water. When D’Eliseo was considering buying the property about 25 years ago, his grandmother insisted on visiting first. Her test was simple: She drank the water and immediately told him to buy the place.
Creamy penne pasta tossed with chicken and broccoli florets represents the type of fresh, hearty Italian-American comfort cooking served daily.

D’Eliseo brings his signature hospitality and a strong social media presence to Roberto’s Log Cabin, building deep connections with both his staff and the local community.
Cheese-topped mini burger sliders are a comfort staple at Roberto’s Log Cabin.
In keeping with family traditions from Abruzzo, Italy, Roberto’s Log Cabin highlights seasonal produce and fresh seafood, like this stuffed shrimp and local summer squash dish.
Roberto’s highly-rated hot lobster roll served over a generous heap of golden fries.
“If the water’s not good, the food’s not good,” he says. He considers its quality fundamental to good sauces, soups and bread, among other staples. “That’s pretty much Italian 101.”
Looking ahead, he is expanding the restaurant’s outdoor experience with plans for an area featuring firepits, games and live entertainment, to be unveiled in 2027.
D’Eliseo continues investing in the kitchen and recently added a new pizza oven, which he says has made a dramatic difference, helping him achieve the kind of tavern pizza that reminds guests of the pizza they grew up with.
Community also remains central to his vision. He works closely with Lebanon residents and business owners and says a thriving restaurant and town go hand in hand.
“I want that comfort pizza,” he says. “Yes, the flashy pizza is great. But that wasn’t the everyday pizza for me as a kid.” Other customer favorites include the USDA Choice prime rib, his grandmother’s sauce, eggplant and chicken Parmigiana, pasta dishes and locally sourced seafood. Baked cod, fish fries and fish and chips are among the popular seafood offerings. The restaurant also makes its dressings fresh. Its ranch dressing has become so popular that D’Eliseo is working on a way to bottle it for customers who regularly ask to take it home.
That community connection makes Roberto’s a natural partner for GameDay, a program of The Day covering high school sports throughout eastern Connecticut. Now in its third year as Player of the GameDay sponsor, the restaurant welcomes winning athletes with a free plate of wings. “It’s great because it brings people from all over,” he says. For D’Eliseo, the recipe behind Roberto’s Log Cabin remains simple: work hard, use good products and treat people well. “Everything I’ve built comes from the generations before me,” he says. “I’m proud of where I came from, and I’m proud that I’ve been able to take those lessons, do things my own way, and build something that reflects who I am.”
Roberto’s Log Cabin is located at 383 Trumbull Highway in Lebanon. It is open from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 860-456-7663 or visit logcabinct.com. 37

RECIPE
NATIVE EGGPLANT CUTLETS Make the most of Connecticut’s eggplant season while it lasts. According to the Connecticut Department of Agriculture’s crop calendar, locally grown eggplant is available at farmers markets and farm stands through October. Roberto’s gives the seasonal favorite its signature treatment, brining fresh eggplant before hand-breading and frying it until crisp on the outside and tender inside. If locally grown eggplant is no longer available, fresh eggplant from the grocery store works just as well.
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •
1 large Connecticut-grown eggplant 4 cups cold water 2 tablespoons kosher salt 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 fresh eggs, beaten 2 cups seasoned breadcrumbs ¼ cup grated Parmesan or Romano cheese 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 1 teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon black pepper Frying oil, as needed
DIRECTIONS 1.
Slice the eggplant into ¼- to ⅜-inch-thick cutlets.
2.
Combine the cold water and kosher salt in a large bowl. Submerge the eggplant and let it brine for 30 minutes. Drain well and pat completely dry.
3.
Set up a breading station with the flour, beaten eggs and breadcrumbs. Season the flour with a little salt and pepper, if desired. Stir the Parmesan or Romano, parsley, garlic powder and black pepper into the breadcrumbs.
4.
Dredge each eggplant cutlet in flour, shaking off the excess. Dip in the beaten egg, allowing the excess to drip off, then press into the breadcrumb mixture until evenly coated.
5.
Let the breaded cutlets rest for 10 to 15 minutes to help the coating adhere.
6.
Heat the oil to 350 degrees. Fry the cutlets for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crisp. Transfer to a rack to drain and lightly season with salt while hot.
Roberto’s tip: Pat the eggplant completely dry before breading and let the breaded cutlets rest before frying to help ensure a crisp coating. 39

Fall Looks Good On The Shoreline There’s something about autumn along the Connecticut and Rhode Island shoreline. The villages grow quieter. The leaves begin to turn. Porches fill with pumpkins. And home feels just a little more important. For some, fall is a season to settle in. For others, it’s the season to make a move. Whether you’re considering selling a longtime home, searching for a weekend retreat, or simply wondering what your property may be worth in today’s market, having an advisor who understands both sides of the state line can make all the difference.

Wicked Reads
Murder in the Dollhouse
70 on the shoreline
Wrong Place Wrong Time
by Rich Cohen (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2025)
by Gillian McAllister (William Morrow, 2022)
For true-crime fans, the book offers a compelling look at a case that unfolded close to home. Murder in the Dollhouse tells the story of the disappearance of Jennifer Dulos, a case that gripped Connecticut in 2019. Dulos disappeared from her New Canaan home amid one of the most contentious divorces in the state’s history. In the book, Rich Cohen delves into her life, her divorce and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
In Wrong Place Wrong Time, a mother witnesses her mild-mannered son stab a stranger for no apparent reason. She watches him get arrested, meets the police at the jail and then goes to sleep. But when she wakes up, it’s the day before the murder. Each time she wakes up afterward, she finds herself further in the past. Determined to find out why her son committed the murder, she must race backward through time to uncover the truth. If you’re a lover of mystery novels, this book will grip you from beginning to end with its family secrets and unique premise.
Spanning true crime and timebending mysteries to gothic fairy tales and bone magic, these five books are perfect for readers with a penchant for the macabre.
October is here, the perfect month for the strange, morbid and mysterious. This list features stories for readers who like their books a little darker, from real-life crime and time-bending mysteries to gothic fairy tales, bone magic, and even Death herself.

A Sorceress Comes to Call
The Bone Shard Daughter
The Many Deaths of Laila Starr
by T. Kingfisher (Tor Books, 2024)
by Andrea Stewart (Orbit, 2020)
by Ram V and Filipe Andrade (BOOM! Studios, 2022)
A Sorceress Comes to Call is a fairy-tale story with a horror twist, reimagining the Brothers Grimm’s “The Goose Girl.” Headless horses, evil witchy mothers and a shunned daughter—it has all the makings of a Disney fairy tale, with a much darker edge. The story follows Cordelia, a young girl who has spent her life isolated and controlled by her sorceress mother. When Cordelia’s mother moves them into a mansion with plans to marry its wealthy owner, Cordelia unexpectedly finds a sense of belonging with the people there, a sweet surprise in an otherwise gothic story. This is perfect for readers who love something scary with a light touch of something sweet.
The Bone Shard Daughter is the first book in The Drowning Empire trilogy, an epic fantasy series set across a shifting archipelago of floating islands. The magic system is extremely detailed and unique, centered on bone-based magic. The story is told through the perspectives of numerous characters from different parts of the world, each trying to navigate an oncoming revolution against their tyrannical emperor. It is filled with twists, adorable animal companions and themes like classism and privilege within the world’s politics. It’s a good pick for readers who enjoy detailed world-building, fleshed-out characters and stories with plenty of twists.
Unlike the other books on this list, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr is a graphic novel. It follows Laila, the personification of Death, as she navigates Earth with her newfound mortality after getting “fired” from her job. Although it’s a quicker read, the story’s strong Indian cultural and spiritual influences, along with its artwork, make it feel immersive and emotional. It is deeply reflective, exploring mortality and what makes life meaningful, and it’s filled with gorgeous, colorful art that brings it all to life.
