THE PRESERVE
Parking Options: Across from #241 Ingham Hill Road, Old Saybrook; State Parking Lot on Route 152, Westbrook; Intersection of Route 153 and Ingham Hill Road, Essex
The Preserve is a 963-acre forest spanning Old Saybrook, Essex, and Westbrook. It was recognized as the largest remaining unprotected coastal forest

between Boston and New York before it was acquired for conservation in 2015. There are many loops and trails in The Preserve, many of which connect to other hiking options in Old Saybrook, like Great Cedars Conservation Area and Clark Community Park.
“There are so many entrances, and miles and miles of loops,” says Old Saybrook resident Jonathan Paradis. With the longest loop being 8 miles, he advises hikers to park at the state parking lot on Route 153 in Westbrook and enter The Preserve there.
Visitors can continue to the neighboring Great Cedars preserves to add more hiking mileage to their adventure.
TOWN OF OLD LYME OPEN SPACE
Various Locations, Old Lyme
The Town of Old Lyme owns seven sizable open space properties, totaling nearly 1,000 acres accessible for hiking and public enjoyment. The town also owns smaller properties, such as the Ferry Landing
GREAT CEDARS CONSERVATION AREA
East: Merritt Lane
West: 155 Ingham Hill Road
Great Cedars provides hundreds of acres of open space suitable for hiking, walking, trail running, and mountain biking. Trails will take you through woodlands along ponds, swampland, and amid Atlantic white cedar trees.
CLARK COMMUNITY PARK
170 Schoolhouse Road, Old Saybrook
Clark Community Park offers 180 acres of lakeside open space along Crystal Lake, including several hiking trails like Bear’s Den Loop, the steep Upper Ledge Trail, and its counterpart, the Lower Ledge Trail.
Wildlife Refuge, which are maintained as natural areas. The town further holds several conservation easements. Please visit oldlyme-ct.gov for more information and trail maps.
KAYAK
NORTH & SOUTH COVE/ LIEUTENANT RIVER
Although the North Cove is an easy body of water to paddle, if you go along the entire trail to South Cove and back, it gets tricky as you have to navigate on the Connecticut River, which has some chop, is windy, and has strong currents.
Drop in at the town dock on Sheffield Street. Unload your kayak and park at the middle school. Once in the water, there are pretty homes, nice marshes to view, and moored boats to paddle past.
If you choose to explore further, head up the river to see the Amtrak trains traversing the river, or head south to South Cove, another sheltered area perfect for pleasant paddling. Going south, you must paddle past the Saybrook Point Resort and Marina. South Cove is terrific to paddle because it is extremely shallow, limiting motorboat access on the water.
The Coves and the Connecticut River are awesome fishing spots for those who fish from kayaks. Throughout the year, striped bass are caught by fishermen along the piers, as well as shad in the spring.
Another beautiful place to kayak is the Lieutenant River in Old Lyme. You’ll find a drop-in point with parking at 17 Shore Road in Old Lyme. Paddle up the Lieutenant River into Old Lyme or west to the Great Island Wildlife Preserve in the Connecticut River.
For more information on kayaks, SUPs, and rentals, visit Black Hall Outfitters in Westbrook and Old Lyme at blackhalloutfitters.com.

THINGS TO DO WALK/RIDE WITH HISTORY
SIEGE OF SAYBROOK FORT HISTORICAL TOUR
Start at the General William Hart House and Stevenson Archives on 350 Main Street.
Add a layer of education to your next bike ride (or long walk) with the Old Saybrook Historical Society’s Siege of Saybrook Fort Historical Tour. This self-guided journey includes 12 stops throughout Saybrook Neck, Saybrook Point, Fenwick, and Warehouse Point, where the siege and battles of the Saybrook Fort and the Pequot War occurred. The flat 7-mile route is ideal for cyclists, but those who wish to take in history on foot can walk the complete tour (the “Full Battle” route) or two shorter segments (The “Fort Siege” path or the “Extended Battle” route).
HISTORICAL SITES SELF-GUIDED TOUR
Enjoy the rich history of Old Saybrook from the train station down to Saybrook Point. Stop in the Chamber office and pick up a copy of the Historic Walking Tour Guide (or call, and have it sent to you). This self-guided walk draws attention to relics of the past, including the abundant old houses and buildings. The architectural styles are varied; however, there are more 18th-century Colonial and 19th-century Federal buildings than you will find in many New England towns. Visit SaybrookHistory.org or stop in the Chamber Office for a detailed map.
WALK
MAIN STREET
Enjoy beautiful Main Street, Old Saybrook. Park at the Old Saybrook Train Station and make your way to North Main Street, heading toward Old Saybrook Center. Follow the red brick sidewalk to the Old Saybrook Fire Department. Stop and sit awhile and enjoy the Town Green. Visit the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center Museum. Enjoy the many shops and eateries along the way. Head back to the train station for an approximate 2-mile loop.
ROUTE 154/CAUSEWAY
Park at Saybrook Point and walk or run the Route 154 causeway to Knollwood Beach and back to tackle a loop that is approximately 5 miles. It will be busy, but worth it. Enjoy the beautiful views. You can’t beat it.

FEATURES festivals celebrating seasonal
In the heart of Connecticut’s shoreline, Old Saybrook and Old Lyme come alive with a vibrant lineup of seasonal festivals that capture the essence of community spirit. These four cherished events—the Old Saybrook Chili Fest, Celebrate Saybrook Street Party, Old Lyme Midsummer Festival, and Greater Old Saybrook Chamber Arts and Crafts Festival— offer something for everyone, drawing locals and visitors alike to celebrate the region’s creativity, culture, and camaraderie.
As folks are nearing the end of their patience for winter’s chill, the Greater Old Saybrook Chamber Chili Fest warms up Old Saybrook’s Main Street with a sizzling competition. Local chefs vie for the “Best Chili” title, serving up unique creations to taste and judge. Attendees purchase ballots to sample each chili, casting their votes while enjoying the festive atmosphere. 2025’s victor, Gladeview Healthcare Center, will certainly put up some stiff competition for chefs participating in 2026! With sustain-
able touches like compostable cups and reusable spoons, the event, held in late winter, heats up the season and supports the Chamber’s scholarship fund.
Old Saybrook kicks off the busy summer season with Celebrate Saybrook, a lively street party that transforms Main Street into a bustling marketplace. Dozens of local and visiting artisans, crafters, and retailers showcase their wares, while a wide variety of food vendors serve up delicious bites, with live music filling

the air. Families enjoy activities for all ages, sipping on locally crafted beers. Held in late June, Celebrate Saybrook is a joyful gathering that highlights local creativity and flavors.
Just across the river in Old Lyme, the Midsummer Festival marks a high point of the summer season with a town-wide celebration of arts and culture. Historically held in late July, the festival features art exhibitions, craft sales, live music, and a classic car show along Lyme Street. This event showcases Old Lyme’s rich artistic heritage, making it a must-visit for art lovers and families alike.
As the leaves begin to turn, the Greater Old Saybrook Chamber Arts and Crafts Festival brings a burst of creativity to Old Saybrook’s town green. Marking over 60 years of tradition, this juried event, held in October, features nearly 150 artists and crafters from along the East Coast. Drawing upwards of 8,000 attendees, this festival is a testament to the region’s artistic talent and a beloved way to enjoy the fall season.
These seasonal festivals are more than just events— they’re a celebration of what makes Old Saybrook and Old Lyme so special. The Greater Old Saybrook Chamber and local organizations work tirelessly to bring these traditions to life, and they invite you to join in the festivities, keeping these traditions thriving for years to come.

shoreline sparkle
At the Greater Old Saybrook Chamber, we strive to give back to our community, which includes helping the environment. Living a more sustainable life will help our shoreline continue to grow and thrive for years to come.
“Ever since Chamber Cares Day in 2018 and our PLOT: Causeway Cleanups over the years, I have been wanting to do a community-wide project to make the Shoreline sparkle,” says Kara Pachniuk of Nourish + Nosh Nutrition and president of the Greater Old Saybrook Board of Directors.
As one of Pachniuk’s first initiatives as president, she created Shoreline Sparkle, which ran from April 19 to April 26. This event will be an annual event encouraging local businesses and residents of the Connecticut shoreline to clean up their storefronts and around their homes, recycle and donate items that are no longer needed, plant new gardens and trees, and the list goes on!
Multiple businesses in the area participated in Shoreline Sparkle including the Old Saybrook Rotary, Telyon, The Rockfall Foundation, The Children’s Tree Montessori School, Lumibility, and Nautilus Architects.
“Shoreline sparkle was the exact motivation we needed to get started this spring,” says Barb Artelt, of Nautilus Architects in Old Lyme. “We installed new window boxes and filled them with flowers. We also scoured the Lyme Old Lyme High School (tennis) courts and parking lot for trash in order to show our support and appreciation for this unique event.”
There were so many ways to participate in this great event, and year-round. We encouraged everyone to have fun with it, and we even made it a social media competition. Businesses could get their teams together, take pictures, and get some great cleaning done.

“We partnered with cinder + salt, an eco-friendly lifestyle brand, on Earth Day for a street cleanup in the Main Street area of Middletown,” says Tony Marino, Executive Director of The Rockfall Foundation. “Through the efforts of our volunteers, we removed 81 pounds of trash. As taking care of our environment, in both urban and rural areas, is part of Rockfall’s mission, we look forward to participating in Sparkle again next year. We will encourage more people to volunteer next year, allowing us to cover a larger portion of the downtown area. Litter is a plague in every community; I encourage other groups to organize clean-ups in their neighborhoods, town centers, and beaches to provide a healthy environment that we can all enjoy.”
Thank you to everyone that participated this year. We hope Shoreline Sparkle inspires people to embrace year-round cleanups, recycle more, and lead a more sustainable lifestyle. Visit our website for a list of donation and recycling locations around the area.

paws across the shoreline
“What makes the Connecticut shoreline
truly special isn’t just the views, it’s the people and their dogs,” says Adriana Valle, owner of Shoreline Happy Paws. “You’ll find dog-loving neighbors, pet-friendly businesses, and a whole community that welcomes wagging tails with open arms.”
We love our pets, and it is easy to see their importance to us because of
everything the area offers. From dog hiking and Bark Markets to mobile grooming and yoga with cats, there is something for everyone.
All the Single Kitties in Old Saybrook offer more than just events like tarot card readings with cats and visits with the felines: all the cats and kittens can be adopted.
“All the Single Kitties provides a warm and inviting space for cat lovers all along the shoreline to connect
and create lasting memories,” says Carla Gowrie, owner of All the Single Kitties. “Our mission goes beyond companionship; we are dedicated to helping homeless cats find their forever homes, ensuring every feline friend has the love they deserve.”
Showing our pets love also means keeping them healthy. Regular visits to the Animal Hospital of Old Saybrook and Saybrook Veterinary Hospital are incredibly important. Both facilities offer exams, surgeries, vaccinations, and so much more for your dogs, cats, hedgehogs, rabbits, and other small mammals.
Keeping your pets healthy also means keeping them busy and active, especially dogs. Some ways to do this include visiting the Bark Market from Alpha Dog in Old Saybrook every other Sunday. We Let the Dogs Out offers hikes, the beach, and dog park visits. Or, you can sign your furry friend up for a paddleboarding or kayaking adventure, a casual walk, or a dog hike that can be solo or with a group of dogs through Shoreline Happy Paws.
“The Connecticut shoreline is a dream for dogs who love to explore—think forested trails, breezy coastal walks, and off-season beach zoomies,” says Valle. “It’s the perfect blend of enrichment and natural beauty. From cafes with pup cups to

breweries with water bowls and biscuit jars, our shoreline towns know how to roll out the red carpet for dogs. Dining out with your dog isn’t just allowed—it’s encouraged.”
Enjoy dining with your canine at Paperback Cafe, Penny Lane Pub, Johnny Ad’s, Liv’s Shack, Old Saybrook Pizza Palace, and Skippers. Enjoy a coffee date with your pup at Ashlawn Farm, a beer at Myrcene Ale Co., or a treat at Sweet Luna’s Frozen Desserts & Bubble Tea. Before a special outing, get them pampered by Clean Paws Mobile Spa or Pampered Pets Grooming Salon.
“The shoreline is a special place for dogs and their humans,” says Ralph Riello, Pack Leader
at Alpha Dog. “Those of us with grown children now treat our pets as our children, especially dogs and cats. We spend money on them like we did on our kids back when they were overscheduled for a purpose.”
Visiting from out of town with your furry friend? The Pier Blue Inn, the Econo Lodge Inn & Suites, Westbrook Inn Bed & Breakfast, and Saybrook Point Resort & Marina are all pet-friendly accommodations.
Whether you are visiting for a few days or are a local, the Shoreline is a pet-friendly area. Don’t miss these great opportunities to celebrate with your favorite friends!

Aging Successfully ~ Are You Ready?
The key components to Aging Successfully starts with maintaining good health, staying actively engaged, making healthy lifestyle choices, having a positive mindset, and fostering social interaction Everyone wants to age successfully, and some will not experience this realization It occurs to me that those who embrace proactive planning have a more positive outlook with a clear understanding of their options, eliminating fear of the unknown
Let's compare Healthy Aging and Active Aging! Healthy lifestyle behaviors are very important to reduce the difficulties and complications associated with aging, and one of the ways to achieve this is through Active Aging. Active Aging optimizes opportunities for health, participation, and security to enhance the quality of life as people age. The definition of Active Aging from The International Council on Active Aging is: "Active Aging promotes the vision of all individuals regardless of age, socioeconomic status, or health fully engaging in life within all seven dimensions of wellness: emotional, environmental, intellectual/cognitive, physical, professional/vocational, social, and spiritual." We are wildly excited about working with our Active Aging clients.
Functional Ability, Socialization, and Cognitive Impairment significantly impact Longevity. Functional ability to perform activities of daily living and contributions to society are influenced by both mental and physical capacity as well as environmental nuances Socialization plays a crucial role in maintaining functional abilities and serves as a buffer against the challenges of life. Cognitive Impairment is on the rise Research shows that enhancing functional ability, fostering socialization, and addressing cognitive impairment are essential for promoting longevity and maintaining a high quality of life
We reverse-engineered Life Care Planning to support Aging as it is happening today and to plan for a successful future. We are uniquely qualified to support:
Proactive Seniors planning to Age Successfully while preparing for their future
Anyone navigating health challenges and unsure of their long-term care options Families overwhelmed caring for a loved one and looking to evaluate next steps Those with a unique situation needing guidance and support
& Their Families
