Enjoy a walk, run, or bike ride along Long Island Sound and the Connecticut River. Hike our 1,000-acre forest known as The Preserve. Dine in one of our many restaurants—enjoy a lobster roll, oysters on the half shell, fried clams, a delicious pizza, sushi, or Italian cuisine. Or stop in for a beverage at a long-standing tavern reminiscent of Cheers.

Shop our unique boutiques, artisan shops, and antique and home stores–there is something unique for everyone.

Stop in at The Kate and enjoy the museum dedicated to Old Saybrook’s most famous resident, the one and only Katharine Hepburn. Take in a show—you won’t regret it.

Enjoy a round of golf (even indoor is a possibility!), rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board, and enjoy our waters first-hand. Take a cruise or a private charter on the Connecticut River and enjoy the swallows in early fall. If you are here during the holidays, enjoy our one-of-a-kind torchlight parade.

Who does not enjoy a round of mini golf? Especially at the beautiful Saybrook Point, where the Connecticut River meets Long Island Sound. Come on down and enjoy a round with your family and friends at the end of College Street, on the Connecticut River.

FENWICK GOLF COURSE

The Fenwick Golf Course is the oldest public golf course in Connecticut.

Situated on a peninsula at the mouth of the Connecticut River, the Fenwick Golf Course is a links course open year-round, depending on the weather. Every hole offers spectacular views of the Connecticut River, Long Island Sound, or the South Cove. In addition, there are some exceptional examples of historic, shingle-style, beautifully maintained cottages.

Tee times are required between May 1 and October 31. Anyone can call for a starting time 24 hours in advance by calling Fenwick Golf Course at 860-388-2516 after 7 a.m.

THE PRESERVE

Parking Options: Across from 241 Ingham Hill Road, Old Saybrook; State Parking Lot on Route 153, located at 1278 Essex Road, Westbrook

The Preserve is a 963-acre forest spanning Old Saybrook, Essex, and Westbrook. It was recognized as the largest remaining unprotected coastal forest between Boston and New York before it was acquired for conservation in 2015. The Preserve has many loops and trails that connect to other hiking options in Old Saybrook, like the Great Cedars Conservation Area and Clark Community Park.

Jonathan Paradis. With the longest loop being 8 miles, he advises hikers to park at the State Parking Lot on Route 153 in Westbrook and enter the Preserve there.

GREAT CEDARS CONSERVATION AREA

East: Merritt Lane

West: 155 Ingham Hill Road

Great Cedars provides hundreds of acres of open space for hiking, walking, trail running, and mountain biking. Trails wind through woodlands along ponds and swampland and amid Atlantic white cedar trees.

CLARK COMMUNITY PARK

170 Schoolhouse Road, Old Saybrook

Clark Community Park offers 180 acres of lakeside open space along Crystal Lake, including several hiking trails, such as Bear’s Den Loop, the steep Upper Ledge Trail, and its counterpart, the Lower Ledge Trail. Visitors can also continue to the neighboring Great Cedars preserves to add more hiking mileage to their adventure.

TOWN OF OLD LYME OPEN SPACE

Various Locations, Old Lyme

The Town of Old Lyme owns seven sizable open space properties totaling nearly 1,000 acres accessible for hiking and public enjoyment. It also owns smaller properties, such as Ferry Landing Wildlife Refuge, which are maintained as natural

areas. The town further holds several conservation easements. Please visit oldlyme-ct.gov/358/Open-Space-Commission for more information and trail maps.

KAYAK

NORTH & SOUTH COVE/ LIEUTENANT RIVER

Although North Cove is an easy body of water to paddle by itself, if you go along the

entire trail to South Cove and back, it gets tricky as you have to navigate the Connecticut River, which has some chop, is windy, and has strong currents.

Drop in at the Town Dock on Sheffield Street, unload your kayak, and park at the middle school. Once in the water, you will see pretty homes, nice marshes to view, and moored boats to paddle past.

If you explore further, head up the river to see the Amtrak trains traversing the river, or head south to South Cove, another sheltered area perfect for pleasant paddling. Going south, you have to paddle past the Saybrook Point Resort and Marina. South Cove is terrific to paddle because it is extremely shallow, limiting motorboat access to the water.

The Coves and the Connecticut River are fantastic fishing spots for those who fish from kayaks. Throughout the year, Striped Bass are caught by fishermen along the piers and shad in the spring.

Another beautiful place to kayak is the Lieutenant River in Old Lyme. You’ll find a drop-in point with parking at 17 Shore Road in Old Lyme. Paddle up the Lieutenant River into Old Lyme or west to the Great Island Wildlife Preserve in the Connecticut River.

BIKE

ROUTE 154 / ROUTE 1 LOOP

Follow Route 154 in Old Saybrook through Saybrook Point, across the causeway, past Fenwick Golf Course, Fenwood and Knollwood Beaches, and up to Route 1 for a 10–12-mile loop that’s great for cycling or runners looking to get in some long run training.

OLD SAYBROOK/OLD LYME FIGURE 8 RIDE

Start at the Old Saybrook Train Station and cross over the Connecticut River on the Baldwin Bridge Bike Path for a scenic, nearly 50-mile, figure 8-shaped loop through Old Lyme and Old Saybrook. For a map and detailed directions, visit ctbikeroutes.org and select “Old Saybrook” as the starting point.

WALK

MAIN STREET

Enjoy beautiful Main Street. Park at the Old Saybrook Train Station and make your way to North Main Street, heading toward Old Saybrook Center. Follow the red brick sidewalk to the Old Saybrook Fire Department. Stop and sit awhile and enjoy the Town Green.

Visit the Museum at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. Enjoy the many shops and eateries along the way. Head back to the train station for an approximately 2-mile loop.

ROUTE 154/CAUSEWAY

Park at Saybrook Point and walk or run the Route 154 causeway to Knollwood Beach and back to tackle a loop that is approximately 5 miles. It will be busy but worth it. Enjoy the beautiful views; you can’t beat it.

ROGER TORY PETERSON ESTUARY CENTER PRESERVE

Located on the banks of the Lieutenant River, a tidal tributary of the Connecticut River, it has a sunken garden, pollinator plants, and beautiful trees. The Connecticut River estuary is one of the most important ecosystems in the world, and the Lieutenant River is a small but important part of that.

WALK/ RIDE WITH HISTORY

SIEGE OF SAYBROOK FORT HISTORICAL TOUR

Start at the General William Hart House and Stevenson Archives, 350 Main Street

Add a layer of education to your next bike ride (or long walk) with the Old Saybrook Historical Society’s Siege of Saybrook Fort Historical Tour. This self-guided journey includes 12 stops throughout Saybrook Neck, Saybrook Point, Fenwick, and Warehouse Point, where the siege and battles of the Saybrook Fort and the Pequot War occurred.

The flat 7-mile route is ideal for cyclists, but those who wish to take in history by foot can walk the complete tour (the “Full Battle” route) or two shorter segments (The “Fort Siege” path or the “Extended Battle” route).

HISTORICAL SITES SELF GUIDED TOUR

Enjoy the rich history of Old Saybrook from the Train Station down to Saybrook Point. Stop by the Chamber office and pick up a copy of the Historic Sites Self Guided Tour guide. You can also call to have it sent to you. This self-guided walk draws attention to relics of the past, such as the old houses and buildings, which are abundant. The architectural styles are varied; however, there are more 18th century colonial and 19th century federal buildings than in many New England towns. Cruise along the Connecticut Shoreline on the Long Island Sound or take a voyage up the Connecticut River. Both trips are completely different but have incredible views! Old Saybrook is so fortunate to have both great bodies of water to boat and sail, offering different experiences for everyone.

Take a Picnic Cruise on the sound or create a custom trip up the river with Seabird Cruises. Captain Chip Adams’ Dyer 29 is docked at Saybrook Point Marina, making it easy to access the sound or the river. This classic New England boat is perfect for celebrating a special occasion or taking in a relaxing sunset.

If power boats are not your speed, spend some time sailing at the North Cove Yacht Club. Sailing lessons are offered for kids and adults at this beautiful club, minutes from Main Street. Learn how to trim sails, read the wind, and drive. Equipped for two people, learning on their 420 sailboats is the perfect way to get started in sailing.

Whether you choose the Connecticut River or the Long Island Sound, there’s always a chance to hit the waters. Do you still need your boating certification? Connecticut Boating Certificates, LLC offers virtual classes throughout the state. It’s time to get boating!
