MISQUAMICUT M

isquamicut Beach is a vi brant shoreline commu nity that includes many contiguous beaches, some owned by the town or state, and some owned by private businesses or residents. It’s long been a favorite destination for family fun in the sun! Nothing beats the natural beauty of the white sand and the waves on a summer day. Enjoy surfing and boogie boarding or wave-jumping with the kids. If you prefer, spread on the sunscreen and do nothing at all. The centerpiece of this community is Misquamicut State Beach, the largest public beach in Rhode Island with over 3,000 parking spaces. The beach extends for more than half a mile, while ameni ties just off the parking area include con cessions, a playground, and bathrooms. Please take note of any rip tide warnings and do not dig large holes at any of our beaches as they pose a safety hazard. Respect this beautiful area and help us keep it litter free.

Atlantic Avenue is the road that runs parallel to the ocean, and both ends of Misquamicut Beach have notable attrac tions that are worth exploring. A scenic bike path is a convenient way to walk, jog, or bike this picturesque route. You might discover Two Little Fish, the perfect sea food shack where you can enjoy casual dining at picnic tables, or Beach Bums Café and Creamery providing take-away meals and delicious ice cream treats. Walk with your toes in the sand along the entire stretch of beach to see all of the sites and other businesses from the shore side. You’ll note the inviting, colorful Adirondack chairs at the newly renovated Windjammer Surf Bar. Here you’ll find sweeping views of the ocean, an extensive menu and live entertainment. Tiki beach parties at Paddy’s Beach Club are

the perfect place to dance to bands or DJs, while enjoying signature cocktails such as the famous “Shark Attack.” There are weekly cornhole tournaments, and if its laughs you seek, check out their “hot dad bod contest” in September. Make your reservations in advance at the Andrea Seaside Restaurant and Beach Bar to ensure that you have your own designated section on the beach. Servers come right to your chair making this a relaxing and convenient way to destress while working

on your tan lines. Run for three generations by the Colucci family, the restaurant is known for fresh seafood, salads, and tacos. Beach concerts, trivia, and even Christmas in July are popular themed activities here. For a full-scale beachfront resort experience, check out the Pleasant View Inn. It’s the only property directly on the beach that also has a pool and fullservice restaurant. Sandy Shore Motel is centrally located and guests enjoy a private beach bar.

Thinking about a wedding on beach? All of these facilities can accommodate your nuptial needs or other private events.

The Misquamicut Business Association helps keep this area clean, inviting, and lively. The MBA produces blockbuster festivals in the spring and fall, featuring music, carnival rides, food trucks, and more. Step back in time and enjoy a nostalgic experience at the Misquamicut drive-in movie theater. From May through October, a wide range of classic films are presented and at just $20 a carload there is no better value!

The grounds of the drive-in are also used to host classic car shows on Tuesday evenings in July and August. New this year is a Kite Festival planned for September. This family activity will surely provide great fun during a time many believe is the best month for a visit. For a truly unique experience, don’t miss the wildly entertaining Guy Fawkes Bonfire Night in October. This raucous performance includes slapstick comedy, original music, and a close-knit cast of friends. Laughs are guaranteed.

WATCH HILL

Dreaming of the next time you can put your toes in the sand? The solitude found at Napatree Point Conservation Area provides a peaceful retreat with unparalleled natural beauty. This 1.5-mile sandy spit requires a bit of a hike, and has no facilities, no lifeguards, and no signs of commercial activity. Those factors contribute greatly to its charm. Napatree is never overcrowded, guaranteeing a quiet and relaxing beach day with gentle surf and spectacular scenery. Explore both sides of this slice of paradise and you may catch a glimpse of piping plover, oystercatchers, least terns, snowy owls, and many other species of interest to birdwatchers. Take a stroll to the end of the point, and if you look carefully, you will discover the naturally camouflaged ruins of Fort Mansfield, a coastal artillery station that was maintained between 1901 and 1926. Hidden underneath brush, and accessible only via a prickered path, this historic site now consists of just the foundation of what was once a look-out point by Colonists during the French and Indian War. To learn about the history and unique eco-system of this area, catch a free guided nature walk. They take place every Saturday at 9 a.m. during summer, starting at the entrance sign

near the Misquamicut Club property. While some feel Napatree Point is difficult to reach, once there it’s pure paradise, making it a place you will not want to leave.

Watch Hill beach is popular with families and is open to the public for a reasonable fee. The surf is mild and lifeguards pay careful attention. The beach is steps from the beloved Flying Horse Carousel, the only surviving carousel of its kind in the

United States, with hand-painted horses suspended by chains, instead of being mounted on poles. Each one is lovingly restored, hand-painted by Gary Anderson, with real horsehair used for the manes. Children delight in riding this attraction and reaching for the brass ring, a treasured childhood memory for several generations.

East Beach is free to the public and provides exciting waves, making it a favorite destination for young adults. This three-mile beach is popular for swimming, boating, and fishing. Park in a designated beach lot in town or get dropped off in the village and walk-up Larkin Street to access the public right-of-way. Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island estate will be directly to your right, and fans can sunbathe along the giant rock fortress that surrounds her palatial oceanfront home.

The impressive Watch Hill Lighthouse is situated majestically at the end of Lighthouse Road. Although the street is private for residents only, visitors may walk to the site for an up-close view of the beautiful beacon. This is the third lighthouse structure to protect mariners at this location; an earlier lighthouse was destroyed in a 1781 storm, and one commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson in 1806 was abandoned in 1855 due to erosion of the nearby bluff. Built with Westerly granite, the present landmark opened the following year and the light was automated in 1986. It is open 8 a.m. to sunset year-round, and there is also a small museum on the grounds that is open 1–3 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday in July, August, and through the week after Labor Day. Persons with disabilities are permitted to drive on the road to access a parking lot closer to the site. Note signs permitting fishing access and please respect posted 2-hour parking rules which are strictly enforced throughout all of the village.

Beyond the beaches, the coastal paradise of Watch Hill is known for its selection of fabulous boutiques and two art galleries. The shopping is an attraction in and of itself! There are many options for fashion forward resort wear, designer bathing suits, and home accessories. Limited free parking is available in the Bay Street lot, and on the streets for two hours, for those who wish to support the local economy. Insider’s tip: Park after 3:01 p.m. and you can stay for several hours at no charge.

After exploring, enjoy dinner and music at the Watch Hill Sunset Concerts. Performances take place starting at 6 p.m. on select Tuesdays in the summer. The Olympia Tea Room, a longstanding institution, brands itself as “famous not fancy.” Guests enjoy culinary excellence and stunning sunset views while sitting in mahogany booths or dining alfresco. And speaking of breathtaking sunsets, the lighthouse grounds, Napatree Point, the sea wall along Bay Street and the porch of the Ocean House

also provide ideal places to view nature’s splendor. On a clear night you will witness vibrant colors, similar to raspberry and orange sherbert. This dreamy and expansive display will stop you in your tracks and undoubtedly be the highlight of any visit.

The spectacular Ocean House is an impressive triple five-star resort hotel that offers picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean. The luxurious resort welcomes both guests and visitors to its five outstanding dining venues, gourmet brunches, and beachfront lobster boils. While regularly frequented by the rich and famous, the worldclass destination hotel also holds culinary courses, art events, and other special events which are open to the public. An overnight stay here is a memorable experience any time of year.

If you prefer the comfort of less formal accommodations, check out the Holdredge House and Cottage Rentals, a small, family-owned compound consisting of a main house and two cozy cottages within easy walking distance of the village. Watch Hill Harbour House Inn

DOWNTOWN

This unique two-state business district has always been known for being historic, with gorgeous unspoiled architecture, but now it’s a bona fide destination. Downtown has experienced a rejuvenation in recent years, partly due to fabulous community events and an influx of many new restaurants that have elevated the dining scene. The positive momentum has been further enhanced by the reopening of the United Theatre, which provides world-class arts programming year-round. Firmly established as the cultural heartbeat of the region, the vibrant scene also includes numerous art galleries, studios, and events that celebrate the arts in many forms. The excitement kicks off in May with the preeminent Virtu Art Festival in beautiful Wilcox Park. Over 150 supremely talented artists from all over the country will display and sell their works at this special show. In June, the venerable Pops Concert produced by the Chorus of Westerly takes place under the stars, followed by a fireworks display. In August, Riverglow lights up the Pawcatuck River with floating bonfires that provide a dramatic backdrop for the live bands, belly dancers, and fire jugglers that participate in this free family event. In September, the rising stars of the local music scene are showcased at Next Up!, a free day-long concert. Combat the winter blues by visiting in December to experience the Westerly Light Prade and the magic of Starry Lights, an illuminated display of hundreds of stars and giant star sculptures that create a winter wonderland ideal for family photos.

In addition to the arts activities, there are many other timehonored events that are worthy of placing on your calendar. The Pawcatuck River Duck Race is a spectacle like no other, drawing thousands to the riverbanks to cheer on 20,000 rubber duckies! The sight of this alone is incredible to witness but you could also win one of 90 prizes, all while supporting local charities. Great pride and pageantry surrounds the tradition of the Memorial Day Parade and Columbus Day Parade, two

poignant large scale productions. Sunday Fundays are shoulder season festivals where the streets are closed to vehicles so that bands can perform and a 9-hole mini golf course can be set up. Admission and golf are free so that you can instead show your support to the local vendors, artists shops, and restaurants that participate. A Chocolate Stroll, Halloween extravaganza, Santa’s Arrival, and Holiday Stroll are just a few more of the many reasons that downtown is where it’s at year round. Check out our website at oceanchamber.org for the latest details on all of the happenings.

The Westerly Downtown Historic District includes more than 55 structures on the National Register of Historic Places, set against the picturesque backdrop of the Pawcatuck River. The roster includes ornate commercial buildings showcasing Westerly’s famed granite industry and grand Victorian homes. Most notably on that list is Westerly Public Library, which spotlights local artists at its Hoxie Gallery and maintains Wilcox Park. The park is a pristine 14-acre arboretum with meandering

paths, perennial gardens, ponds, majestic trees, and a lovely water fountain as a focal point, designed to honor Harriet Wilcox.

17 giant murals are located throughout the district to celebrate local history. The Bricks and Murals program established museum quality works of art that incorporate notable moments in town history. Walk through downtown to enjoy all these special works, and be sure to shop at the many retailers along the route. You’ll discover more than 40 boutiques offering modern fashions, nostalgic antiques, used books, herbs, bridal gowns, men’s formal wear, gorgeous jewelry, quality furniture, kids clothing, locally themed gifts, musical instruments, premium cigars, apple wines and ciders, gelato, baked goods, and even thrift store treasures.

There’s no shortage of excellent dining options downtown too, with something for every budget. Two sports bars and two pizza restaurants are well supported by the locals due to the warm hospitality, casual atmosphere, and affordable prices. If fine dining is more your style, you won’t be disappointed as there are several with outstanding culinary credentials using local sourced ingredients. If you are feeling adventurous, let your tastebuds span the globe with eateries offering Mexican, Irish, Japanese, Thai, Peruvian, and Nikkei cuisine. Whether you start your day with fresh baked goods at an independent coffee house or end it enjoy dining al fresco along the Pawcatuck River, you won’t be disappointed.

Downtown Westerly has a vibrant nightlife scene. You can pop into a swanky cocktail bar or swing dance the night away at a celebrated music club. Many spots support local musicians and provide entertainment with no cover charge. Catch a first-run movie on the big screen, sample creative martinis, or check out the wide range of premium cigars for sale at a vintage lounge.

 Despite the popularity of downtown, parking is not as challenging as you might think. There are plenty of spots available on Canal Street in a large, well-lit lot just one block from downtown. A second municipal lot on Main Street, next to the chamber’s billboard, almost always has available spaces.

If you can make a night of it, book your stay at The Margin Street Inn. This ideal location and beautiful property is perfectly situated to allow you to experience all that downtown Westerly has to offer. Set on 6.5 riverfront acres, the bed and breakfast features 10 guest rooms in two renovated homes, just two blocks from the heart of the town center.

NORTH END

Venture north of downtown to find a few businesses well worth discovering. Grey Sail Brewing of Rhode Island and Grey Sail Taproom offer a variety of flagship beers and a rotating selection of specialty brews. The brewery converted a nearby Italianate Colonial mansion into a taproom, preserving the beautiful murals that decorate the walls. This venue also has a pet-friendly beer garden where visitors can play a game of bocce or participate in paint nights. South County Distillers offers delicious craft spirits located on the Grey Sail campus where live music is often on tap as well. Hilltop Café, a neighborhood pub, is known for its pizzas and homemade comfort foods. Clydesdale Tavern, Inc. invites you to “come as you are” while you enjoy this casual pub with pool table, juke box, and late operational hours.

The Jonnycake Center Thrift Store offers a treasure trove of gently used items such as clothing, furniture, and children’s toys. Proceeds from this enormous retail operation support a food pantry and provide local residents with social services.

STONINGTON

STONINGTON BOROUGH

Connecticut’s last commercial fishing village operates in Stonington Borough and proudly stands as a modern day example of incredible Yankee resolve. The humble, hardworking fishermen represent generations of tradition as they go about their challenging work harvesting fish, scallops, and lobsters. When not at sea, the giant colorful trawlers line the town docks and make for an impressive and breathtaking shoreline scene, particularly at sunset. This dock is the very heart and soul of the “Boro” and the foundation upon which the charming residential community and eclectic business district was built. Visit for fresh-off-the-boat seafood and lovely photographs, but please refrain from entering the designated work zone. Just two blocks away is the picturesque business district which features delightful retail shops and restaurants nestled amongst grand homes with gorgeously landscaped gardens. The best way to explore this village is by foot, while being cautious of its uneven sidewalks lined with giant old trees. The brightly painted front doors add a bit of whimsy and most homes have plaques denoting their historic origins. The shop owners are characters with loads of local knowledge and an eagerness to share history

along with hospitality. Perhaps you will learn of Stonington’s resolve during the 1814 attack by the British. Four ships anchored off Stonington Point and bombarded the town with 150 cannons and mortars. The large American flag raised by Dean Gallup and nailed to a pole as a sign of defiance is a treasured artifact preserved by Historic Stonington. This group also manages the Capt. Nathaniel B. Palmer House, the preserved homestead of an early Antarctic explorer and the Stonington Lighthouse Museum, a stone beacon built in 1840. Salt Marsh Opera is held on the lighthouse grounds and rotating exhibits take place inside. Nearby is Cannon Square, where three 18-pound cannons used in the War of 1812 are proudly on display.

Many curated antiques and notable works of art can be found in the Boro, some of which pay homage to the fishing industry or the Battle of Stonington. Others simply celebrate the quaint or quirky details of everyday life here. Art galleries and studio shops showcase abstract works as well as landscapes that capture the magnificent scenery. The jewelry and clothing are distinctive, some with a nautical flare, and others heavily influenced by the artist community or catering to the discerning tastes of New York transplants who now call the Boro home. A community thrift store rounds out the offerings and guarantees that this destination shopping area has something in everyone’s budget.

When it’s time to dine, you have amazing restaurant options year round. Nothing beats summer alfresco dining while perched on a long dock providing breathtaking views and excellent cuisine. There is also dining by firepit and on tiny patios attached to colorful eateries. Check our website at oceanchamber.org for the complete listing or call us for recommendations.

The James Merrill House is the former home of the celebrated Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and offers tours four times a year. As you keep walking towards the point, you’ll come across New England Science and Sailing. NESS hosts marine-based education programs, including a children’s boating program, Stonington Harbor cruises, and sailing lessons. Nearby is La Grua Center, a thriving hub of music, lectures, dancing, workshops, and art shows.

At the farthest tip of Water Street you’ll find Stonington Point, a large grassy picnic area with sweeping water views in every direction. There is ample parking and the promise of a perfect family day at DuBois Beach, where daily passes allow entry to visitors.

Also in the Boro, just a few blocks away, is The Velvet Mill. It is worth the visit! This gigantic, converted mill houses local artist studios, retail shops, excellent restaurants, and a brewery. Seasonal Farmers Markets and themed events make this retail space a true gem.

Year round, you can explore Barn Island Wildlife Management Area, which is the state’s largest coastal wildlife preservation area. Visitors enjoy beautiful walks, hiking, and birdwatching on the 1,013-acre site, adjacent to a public boat launch. A winter escape to the Boro will allow you to experience the famous Stonington Lobster Trap Tree, which features 460 beautiful buoys hand painted by professional artists. They are affixed to lobster traps stacked in a 38-foot-tall tree-like configuration. You can even walk inside this festive landmark that lights up each night at 4:30 for six weeks.

 the “top 10” list of travel magazine recommendations. There is something truly magical about this place.

The iconic Mystic River Bascule Bridge is a distinctive landmark in the center of downtown and the oldest of its kind in the U.S. This unique attraction is a regularly timed showstopper for visitors as sailing vessels pass by the stately homes that flank the Mystic River. While a minor inconvenience for vehicular traffic, it provides a unique photo opportunity and is all part of the charm and visitor experience. If you time it right, you can enjoy an ice cream or dinner on the patio while you take in the spectacle of this operation. Mystic River Park is an expansive open area along a wide boardwalk and another ideal place to watch this ritual. Enjoy take-out lunch in the park or evening concerts.

The Mystic River itself is undoubtedly the main attraction of this bustling, vibrant downtown. To enjoy it from a unique vantage point, set sail in protected waters and embark on a day-sail or sunset cruise on the schooner Argia. This is the last

commercial sailing ship left in Mystic and will provide a truly beautiful memory. When exploring by water, you will likely hear the sound of sea chanteys, learn tales of pirates, and experience the magic that brings people back again and again.

Mystic has an ever growing array of shops and restaurants. Discover quality handmade rope goods at two locations of Mystic Knotwork and feel the pride in the process by those who make these nautical treasures. Look for the giant whale sculpture and you’ll find a long-standing independent bookshop with locally made gifts and puzzles. Newer to the scene is a boutique bottle and spirits shop offering educational and fun curated events. More than 40 other stores offer trendy fashion, an eclectic mix of antiques, art, home and yard décor, and gorgeous custom jewelry.

The restaurant scene is superb here. In the heart of downtown, you’ll find outstanding fresh seafood and incredible views from a garden patio in prime view of the boating procession. For something truly different, experience a casual dining oasis in a treehouse, located atop a giant boulder. Tempt your taste buds with homemade fudge, ice cream, and candy or by visiting an award winning, French-focused bakery. Venture a couple blocks off the beaten path and years back in time with a fabulous dining experience at a 1756 inne. Captain Daniel Packer Inne—DPI, as it is known to locals—has a formal dining room, cozy pub, and nightly live music. On the opposite side of the extended downtown, you’ll find a gem of a taco joint in a converted gasoline station and a seasonal outdoor snack bar known for award-winning fried clams, ice cream, and views of the cove. Across the street is international fusion cuisine that is authentic to the Asian origins of its owners

Several downtown annual events offer additional incentive to visit Mystic. These include the Mystic Irish Parade, the famed Mystic Outdoor Art Festival, and the festive Lighted Boat Parade. There is no better place

22 ocean COMMUNITY
Mystic River Bascule Bridge

to view the Lighted Boat Parade than S & P Oyster Restaurant and Bar. The popularity of all these events makes parking in Mystic a real challenge, so plan ahead and get there early.

Olde Mistick Village is an exciting outdoor shopping mall and dining destination with more than 50 shops located just off I-95 at exit 90. The charming village buildings are connected by pleasantly landscaped paths, and the site also includes a chapel and duck pond. Mystic Luxury Cinema, located within, is a modern yet cozy movie theater with oversized chairs for comfort. It also hosts the Mystic Film Festival in the fall. Olde Mistick Village hosts regular events throughout the year, including a garlic festival, chowder fest, Easter egg hunt, an art show, and festival of lights luminaria event. The dazzling holiday display lasts all winter and is enhanced by an ice sculpture festival in February.

Eateries in the village include a popular European-style social hall and beer garden and a time-honored steakhouse. Perched on the hill overlooking the village you’ll find outstanding Mexican fare. For family-style, authentic Italian food, visit Andiamo at the major intersection of Greenmanville Avenue and Coogan Boulevard.

The Mystic Aquarium is dedicated to education and research and is a must-visit institution. It is home to thousands of species of marine mammals, fish, invertebrates, and reptiles. The beluga whales and African penguins are among the fan favorites, while the sea lion show is entertaining for all ages. Pet a stingray and explore the touch tank for a memorable experience.

Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center (DPNC) oversees a lengthy network of hiking trails as well as a natural history museum. DPNC and its Coogan Farm preserve both hold regular programming including nature walks and cooking classes.

For an unforgettable stay in Mystic, reserve your overnight at The Mermaid Inn. Inside is cozy and features original art while outside you’ll enjoy the wrap-around porch with views of the Mystic River.

HOPKINTON

So much to do, so little time. Whether you are a hiker, kayaker, hunter, or fisherman, this area is well known for its outdoor activities. Hopkinton and Richmond are beautiful towns that encompass 26 forests and natural preserves. The largest such preserve in Washington County is the Arcadia Management Area, encompassing more than 14,000 acres of forested land stretching across Hopkinton, Richmond, Exeter, and West Greenwich. In Richmond, the Carolina Management Area covers 2,375 acres. These lands are open to multiple uses, including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and hunting. The Hillsdale Forest and Wildlife Reservation, an 1,825-acre property donated to the State of Rhode Island, includes accessible trails and the remains of a textile mill village along the Beaver River.

The hiking options are endless and one of the most popular spots is the 2.7-mile Ben Utter Trail to Stepstone Falls in the Arcadia Management Area. There is a small but scenic waterfall cascading over wide ledges. In the neighboring Village of Shannock you can discover a much larger, U-shaped cataract,

known as Horseshoe Falls. The iconic spot is a favorite for photographers and is easily visible from a nearby bridge. Check out the Francis C. Carter Memorial Preserve, with 840 acres of scrub oak, pitch pine, and vernal pools. More than five miles wind through the territory, and a 35-acre field is a favorite spot for local birdwatchers. Visitors can hike 1.5 miles and pass signs of Native American cairns and 18th-century settlements at Kenyon Crossroads, one of several parcels maintained by the Hopkinton Land Trust. The Richmond Heritage Trail is a 1.5-mile trek with six interpretive signs dedicated to the town’s history. Beaver River Park includes a trail running through a range of ecosystems and eight interpretive stations for visitors to spot flora and fauna.

For a peaceful adventure kayak the “wild and scenic” Pawcatuck river. Interactive maps denoting numerous water trails and ponds may be found at wpwildrivers.org.

The Preserve, located in Richmond amid 3,500 pristine acres, offers four seasons of indoor luxury, including spa services. Enjoy outdoor activities including fishing, hunting, horseback riding, ziplining, and an 18-hole golf course. They also boast the longest indoor automated gun range in the US.

The Richmond Historical Society maintains the historic Bell School, an 1826 one-room schoolhouse which is often open on Saturday mornings in conjunction with the Richmond

Farmer’s Market. Visitors interested in local history can also peruse the society’s extensive collection at the Clark Memorial Library.

For nearly 50 years, the Washington County Fair has remained true to its roots of showcasing local agriculture, livestock, and farm competitions. Kids love the carnival rides but don’t overlook the more traditional activities such as the sunflower seed spitting contest, tug of war, and largest pumpkin competition. Tractor pulls, lawn mower races, and live music make this a favorite event amongst “Swamp yankees.” Come early as it’s known to reach maximum capacity crowds and sell out!

A hidden Rhode Island treasure is Hack & Livery General Store, a Hope Valley gem, with its exterior décor harkening back to the building’s early days as a livery stable. Explore two floors of clothing, books, toys, candles, accessories and over 100 types of candy! Another retail store not to be missed is Chariho Furniture, which specializes in quality American-made home furnishings. Look through the three-story showroom to find an item that’s perfect for your home. Traveling with man’s best friend?
