New Light Placed At Site of Fatal 2024 Old Saybrook Boat Crash By Eric O'Connell Staff Writer

A new light is now functioning at the end of the breakwater off of Old Saybrook where a boat crash killed three people over Labor Day weekend of 2024. Proponents hope the new light will increase maritime safety in the area and serve as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the crash.

On Dec. 7 a mix of families, legislators, and representatives from the United States Coast Guard gathered in Old Saybrook as the light was switched on. Advocates hope better illumination near the breakwater will reduce serious boating accidents like the one that occurred in 2024. The efforts to install the so-called solar spindle light were led by the families of the three victims who started “Light the Way,”

an initiative to boost water safety. Over the previous year, the organization had brought attention to the lack of lighting on the breakwater and the danger it poses to mariners. Old Saybrook First Selectman Carl Fortuna told The Harbor News, “Boater safety is important to everyone and, while we may not Mace Vitale has been teaching the be able to eliminate all boating accidents, any metallic arts at the Guilford Arts Center for about 20 years..............2 See New Light page 11

The storm brought 1-3 inches of snow to the area, marking the season's first accumulating snowfall for many shoreline towns before bitter cold moved in behind the system.
