COME FAIR TO THE
Celebrate 250 Years of America
The Guilford Fair, since its inception in 1859, has been a wonderful community event. The Fair itself has evolved over the years, originally being held on the Guilford Green before moving to the Fairgrounds on Lovers Lane in 1969. The theme of “Celebrating 250 Years of America” will be the focus of both the Fair and the Fair Parade this year, and participants will be able to celebrate America’s birthday and the part that Guilford has played in the 250 years of the United States, together with the tradition that is the Guilford Fair. As we celebrate America’s 250th, I, as President of the Agricultural Society, would like to take a moment to reflect on our agricultural ancestors who sowed Guilford’s agricultural roots. Today there are still some descendants of those original settlers who cultivate those roots here in Guilford, such as the Dudleys, the Leetes, the Bishops, the Chittendens, and the Scrantons, among others. As a young boy, these families were instrumental in my education and interest in farming, which is still my focus and livelihood today. This year, as part of America 250, we will celebrate the role that horses played in the Revolutionary War and in the evolution of American farming and transportation since the nation’s independence. Horses were essential to farming in early America, for plowing and harvesting fields, for logging, and for transportation. So, as we celebrate America’s 250th, we will also celebrate the horse this special year. But the Fair is above all a family affair: the Flying Wallendas and the family circus, the musical entertainment, children and adults alike laughing and enjoying all the exhibits and amusement rides the Fair has to offer, and of course the food. The traditional Guilford Fair Parade around the Guilford Green on Saturday morning of Fair weekend will be a special celebration this year for America’s birthday. The local school bands, the farm tractors, trucks pulling floats, fife and drum corps, Guilford Fire Department, Guilford Police Department, dance groups, cheerleaders, and the clip-clop of the horses and donkeys, all to celebrate the red, white, and blue of 250 years of independence. As we celebrate “250 Years of America” in this very special year, please come and enjoy the Guilford Fair in September, enjoy all the entertainment, food, and animals, and this year all of the flags, the red, white, and blue, and the very special celebrations of America’s birthday. All of us at the Agricultural Society want to make the Fairgrounds and the Guilford Fair a place for happy memories to be made and treasured. We look forward to seeing your smiling faces.
John Hammarlund

Juggle with Janoah the Jester Janoah Bailin grew up on Cape Cod and fell in love with juggling and the circus arts in elementary school. He attended after-school camps with The Suspenders Juggling Troupe, a three-man act that hosted after-school juggling camps and learned to juggle and unicycle before he was 12 years old. He later started a juggling club in middle school, where he enjoyed sharing his love of the circus with younger children. While attending college in Bar Harbor, Maine, Janoah first focused on environmental studies but switched to the arts when he realized that performance was what he really loved. He joined Circus Smirkus Big Top, where he taught juggling and performance skills to students ages 10 to 18. The program emphasizes teamwork and perseverance, and about 75% of its participants have gone on to become professional circus performers. He later joined the Gym Dandies Children’s Circus. This after-school unicycle troupe includes students from third grade through high school. There, he teaches students and choreographs performances for basketball halftime shows, parades, and even Universal Studios. Janoah is now the Artistic Director of the Gym Dandies Children’s Circus. He also teaches and performs with the Children’s Circus of Middletown, where the
Bread and Puppet Show introduces children to puppetry using oversized puppets, along with unicycling and tightrope walking. Janoah shares his lifelong love of performing with children across New England and beyond, inspiring new generations to discover the joy and wonder of the circus arts. He currently performs internationally at fairs, festivals, and parades and will be at the Guilford Fair for the first time this year. His act features giant-wheel unicycling, giant yo-yo juggling, and puppetry. Audience participation is a highlight of every performance, giving children the opportunity to become part of the show while discovering the excitement of the circus arts. Be sure to visit the Guilford Fair to see Janoah perform and experience his passion for sharing the magic of the circus with the next generation. Horses of the Revolution Horses were an important part of American life and culture long before the founding of the nation. They remained an integral part of American rural and urban life until the 20th century, when the emergence of mechanization caused their use for industrial, economic, and transportation purposes to decline, leaving farming and recreation as their main uses. European settlers brought a variety of horses to the Americas, beginning with smaller animals that could be transported on early sailing ships, and later, larger draft and working horses were imported. Native American peoples initially acquired horses from the Spanish, and the animals quickly became integral to their lives and culture, especially on the Plains, where tribes viewed them as a source of wealth and used them for hunting, travel, and warfare. At the start of the Revolutionary War, horses for the cause had to be sourced locally, and often meant taking draft horses from farmers and loggers. These horses had to be trained to remain calm in battle, to endure cannon and musket fire, and to transport food, munitions, cannons, and other necessities for war. Once the French allied themselves with the Continental Army, they shipped horses, bridles, bits, and saddles, as well as mounted troops, to aid in the Revolutionary struggle. These “Warhorses” in cavalry and dragoon regiments had a profound impact on the fighting men, boosting their morale and courage with their stately demeanor and calm and tranquil natures.
The horse used in Paul Revere’s midnight ride in 1775 is believed in folklore to have been named Brown Beauty and was seized by British troops that night, its fate unknown. Without its willingness to gallop through the night, the Battle of Concord may have had a less victorious outcome. George Washington is frequently depicted in art mounted on Blueskin, a gray half-Arabian horse, a gift from Col. Tasker of Maryland. Washington’s other primary riding horse was Nelson, a chestnut gelding said to be calmer under fire than Blueskin. Both these horses, heroes of the Revolutionary War, were retired after the war, and Blueskin lived at Mount Vernon. These majestic creatures contributed to America’s freedom during the Revolutionary War, and some paid the price. Whether they came from local farms and fields or from farther away, these brave animals left their familiar surroundings and faced unforeseen dangers in battle, entrusting themselves to human care.
So, as we celebrate America 250, let us honor the service of these beautiful animals, many of whom are still in service today, for pleasure, farming, or military and police service.

IN DEDICATION OF
Barbara Hammarlund The 2026 Guilford Fair
Barbara Hammarlund has been involved with the Guilford Agricultural Society and the Guilford Fair for more than 50 years, beginning as a child growing up in Guilford. Her family’s farming roots date back to her great-grandparents, and she regularly participated in the Guilford Fair Parade, first on the Guilford Grange float, and later with the Guilford High School Band as captain of the color guard from 1973 to 1976. Barbara became a member of the Agricultural Society in the 1980s, showing rabbits and goats, and served as chair of the Rabbit Department. In the 1990s, she began showing cows and served as Assistant Secretary and then Secretary of the Agricultural Society, where she promoted the fair and supported Guilford’s agricultural heritage. Barbara’s dedication extends beyond the Guilford Fair. She has been a leader in local 4-H groups for over 25 years, supporting agricultural innovation and promoting youth involvement in farming. She is the Secretary of the American Lineback Cattle Registry, a heritage breed, advocating to keep these important animals as part of America’s agricultural heritage. In her role with 4-H, she has organized an annual Community Ag Day at the Fairgrounds, bringing together the Connecticut Department of Agriculture and other organizations to promote agriculture and encourage the next generation of farmers. Barbara met John Hammarlund in 1996, when he was chair of the horse pulls. They became engaged in 1998 and married at the Fairgrounds in 1999. When John became President of the Agricultural Society, Barbara became and remains the First Lady of the Guilford Fair. In addition to serving as Assistant Secretary, she helps coordinate department heads and volunteers, overseeing exhibits, prizes and awards, publicity, and other aspects of the fair. She is also an exhibitor, showing cows at the Guilford Fair and at other Connecticut fairs in Durham, Haddam Neck, and Chester, to name a few. Barbara Hammarlund epitomizes the spirit of the volunteers who keep the Guilford Agricultural Society and the Guilford Fairgrounds an important part of Guilford’s agricultural heritage. Thank you, Barbara, for everything that you do.

Rose Orchards & Rose Vineyards A Family Legacy
The Rose family has worked the same piece of land for 13 generations. Today, the current generation continues that legacy through two businesses on the property: Rose Orchards and Rose Vineyards. The family legacy began when Robert Rose came to the New World with his wife and eight children from Ipswich, England, in 1634, sailing on the ship Francis to Massachusetts, before settling in the Connecticut River Valley. After difficult winters marked by a lack of food and the threat of attacks, the family found their way to the Branford River and the growing colony of Branford. The Rose family was prominent in the colony’s growth and became established, owning hundreds of acres of farmland. Today, some of Robert Rose’s descendants still live on the site of the original homestead, now recognized as the second-oldest farm in Connecticut.
mural depicting Rose Orchards farm and winery. Every year, the Rose family puts together an exhibit in front of that mural showcasing locally grown fruit, vegetables, wine, and other products from the farm. The Rose family feels a long-standing affection and connection to the Guilford Fair, considering it to be a special place. It is still a traditional agricultural fair, with animals and locally grown produce, and not so much a carnival as many fairs have become, they say. Jon Rose says the Guilford Fair is “what an agricultural fair should be.”
Today, the family’s 50-acre farm is home to 12 family members who work together to continue its agricultural legacy. They care for animals, orchards, and vineyards and provide fresh produce and local products to the Shoreline community. The Rose family has been associated with the Guilford Fair for over 30 years, and multiple generations have participated in showing animals, vegetables, and crafts. It is part of the family tradition that the children learn how the farm operates and participate in everything that is produced. In one of the exhibitor barns at the Guilford Fair, Guilford Agricultural Society volunteers created a beautiful
