Wetlands OKs ‘Guilford Village West’ Plan

A proposed mixed-use development at 1940 Boston Post Road—dubbed “Guilford Village West” by its developer—took a key step forward Aug. 13 with the approval of a regulated activities permit by the Guilford Inland Wetlands Commission (IWC).

The approval, which includes a lengthy list of conditions, moves the 92-acre proposal closer to becoming one of the town’s most significant new developments. The parcel lies across from the Guilford Commons shopping plaza and is slated to include four residential buildings totaling 162 apartment units.

Those buildings would be located on a residential parcel connected by a driveway to a

commercial section fronting Boston Post Road (Route 1).

According to application materials, 26 acres of the site would house the residential buildings, a sanitary septic system located within a protected conservation easement, and the access driveway. The IWC noted that See Wetlands page 10

Regnier Helps Christ Church Invite Guilford Community to ‘Beyond the Red Doors’

As the academic year’s seminarian for Guilford’s Christ Episcopal Church, rising second-year Yale Divinity School student Tyler Regnier is delighted to begin his internship by planning a special community event, “Beyond the Red Doors - A Community Celebration and Cookout,” on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free event at the church on the Guilford green welcomes neighbors, friends, and visitors to come together in celebration and support of the Guilford community.

Tyler is thrilled to join the ministry of Christ Episcopal Church, which is led by Reverend Michael Sweeney.

Obituary

Norman Thomas Marshall Guilford Norman Thomas Marshall, 86, an actor and director best known for his portrayal of the abolitionist John Brown, died peacefully at his home in Connecticut on Aug. 11, 2025, surrounded by family. He was born on April 28, 1939, in Richmond, Va., and grew up as part of a poor farming family in the Jim Crow era—experiences that would forever shape his ideas of justice and equality.

Norman, with frequent collaborator George Wolfe Reily, co-wrote a one-man drama, John Brown: Trumpet of Freedom, which he performed more than 300 times around the globe. In the performance, he brought John Brown to life, as well as all 31 characters. Critics praised his performance for revealing the complexities of Brown’s actions and motivations.

Norman played a key role in New York City’s burgeoning Off-Off Broadway theater scene of the 1960s and ’70s, where he flourished amid an inventive, avant-garde movement that was responsible for launching hundreds of fringe theaters across the city. In 1974, nearly a decade after his NYC debut in the title role of 1967’s Gorilla Queen by Ronald Tavel, he co-founded a repertory theater company with Reily, The No Smoking Playhouse. Norman considered NSP one of his greatest accomplishments, and close relationships forged within its walls continued to enrich his professional and personal life more than 50 years later.

Norman endeared himself to the town of Guilford, his last way station, with the gifts of his personality, his talents, and his willingness to venture. He brought theater to the center of this

small town, founding, with his partner Gwen Gunn, the Moses Gunn Play Company, named in honor of her deceased husband and his old friend.

Since 2017, with the generous cooperation of the Guilford Free Library, he has produced, directed, and often acted in numerous play readings featuring professional actors. The force of his John Brown performances was felt fully in local venues. Holiday productions that will not be forgotten were those of Thornton Wilder’s Long Christmas Dinner, performed by local community members. The extraordinary generosity of his spirit was shown in his cooking and serving a turkey dinner with all the trimmings for the entire audience after the performances.

Finally, he was an electric presence in meetings of the Guilford Poets Guild, his poetry an often ironic illumination of life far south of Connecticut. He was succinctly honest and often droll in his feedback to his poet friends. In his last years, even as he fought disease, he took on the considerable responsibility, along with Gwen, of running the guild.

He was a much-loved participant in Guilford’s poetry life.

Norman is survived by his beloved partner, Gwen; his daughter, Betty (David); stepchildren, Kirsten (Joe) and Justin (Anja); grandchildren: Anna (Tom), Daniel, Cynthia, Johan, Nelson, and Max; siblings, Edna, James, and Suzanne; former wife, Nancy; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and countless dear friends.

In accordance with Norman’s wishes, memorial donations may be made to the Moses Gunn Play Company, 395 Nut Plains Road, Guilford, CT 06437.

Raymond L. Jacobsen Guilford

The Perfect Retirement

Raymond L. Jacobsen, 89, born and raised in Guilford and a longtime resident of Niantic, passed away Aug. 14, 2025. He was the husband, lifelong best friend, and soulmate of Barbara Knowles Jacobsen. They recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.

Raymond was born in Guilford on Oct. 27, 1935, the son of Morris and Margaret Jacobsen. He was the loving father of Bruce Jacobsen (Kathy) and Julie Jacobsen Simon (Martin). He is also survived by one granddaughter, Corey “CJ,” and three grandsons, Mike, Kevin, and Nick.

The youngest of eight boys, Raymond was predeceased by his brothers, Henry, Paul, Marius, Howard, Robert, William, and Edwin.

Ray honorably and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army.

Raymond was a 1953 graduate of

Guilford High School, a 1962 graduate of the University of Connecticut (Bachelor of Science in mathematics), a 1970 graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Master of Science in computer science), and earned a certificate from Connecticut Culinary Institute.

Prior to retirement, Raymond worked as a computer scientist at General Dynamics Electric Boat, Sonalysts, Connecticut College, and the State of Connecticut at the York Correctional Institute.

He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing, biking, skiing, hiking, gardening, kayaking, cooking, walking the Niantic boardwalk, bowling, and viewing wildlife in his backyard and at Rocky Neck State Park.

Burial services will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rails to Trails (Connecticut) or 30 Mile River Watershed Association (Mount Vernon, Maine).

Obituary

Ron DeMartino Guilford Ron DeMartino, a longtime Guilford resident, passed away at Yale New Haven Hospital on Aug. 13, 2025. Ron was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend to many. He was born on Jan. 8, 1939, in The Bronx, N.Y., to his parents, Mario and Blanche DeMartino.

His formative years were spent in Bridgeport. It seemed natural to return to Connecticut after graduating from Hofstra University in 1961 and having served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He worked in finance during his career with the Olin Corporation and United Technologies.

His greatest joy was his family—his three sons, Gerald (Stephanie), Stephen (Kristen), and Ronald (Ursula); and his four grandchildren: Claire, Tyler, Ava, and Molly, with whom he spent many happy moments. Ron and his wife, Marianne, were married for 62 years and cherished their lives together, enjoying their family in addition to traveling and gardening.

Ron is survived by his two brothers and their wives—Anton (Phyllis) and Douglas (Nancy)—and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Ron spent many hours doing volunteer work for Guilford Interfaith Volunteers, both as a board member and as a driver for Meals on Wheels. In addition, he was a member and on the board of Literacy Volunteers, a youth mentor with Guilford Youth Mentoring, and a commander of Post 48 of the American Legion, where he served in many capacities. He loved the game of baseball and continued to play in his senior years.

Family and friends were invited to the wake on Aug. 21 at the Guilford Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Aug. 22 at St. George Church, 33 Whitfield Street, Guilford. A private burial will follow.

“When Michael told me he had this idea of having a celebration for the anniversary of the founding of the parish in September, and he asked me if that would be something I would be interested in working on as part of my internship, I said, ‘Absolutely,’” Tyler recalls.

The result is “...is both a celebration of our parish, but just as much, if not more so a celebration of the Guilford community; the history we share as a town and a community,” says Tyler. “And we hope that people who may have never been to Christ Church, or maybe had been years ago, feel welcome to come and enjoy the day.”

“Beyond the Red Doors” also helps to celebrate the history of Christ Church, which was founded in 1774 by Guilford native The Rev. Dr. Samuel Johnson. The community event features a kids’ bouncy house and face painting in the church’s backyard, live music, a hamburger and hot

dog cookout, a history display in the parish hall, and contemplative time with organ music in the 1838 Gothic-Revival church building. While admission is free, attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation for the Guilford Food Bank to help support neighbors in need.

Tyler recently returned to Connecticut after completing a meaningful hospital chaplaincy summer internship in Philadelphia. An earlier and equally impactful internship at an Episcopal school in the same city helped Tyler to develop the framework for the community event coming up in Guilford.

“My inspiration for this was from spending time in Philadelphia a few years ago teaching at an Episcopal middle school, St. James. Every year in May on St. James Day, they have a big community festival,” says Tyler. “It’s just a beautiful Saturday when all the neighbors come out.

There’s kids’ activities and a prayer service and food, and it’s just a joyful day for neighborhood. So that was my kind of template, and what helped me think about

this opportunity.”

In a Christ Church press release sharing news of “Beyond the Red Door,” Rev. Sweeney said, “...this event is about opening our doors—and our hearts—to our community. As our church celebrates our 281st year in Guilford, we wanted to share our gratitude with the community. We hope everyone will join us for a joyful day of food, music, and fellowship.”

Tyler grew up in the very small town of Tipton, Indiana, which has about 5,000 residents.

“In some ways, Christ Church reminds me of the church I grew up in, so it’s nice to have that homecoming type of feeling,” says Tyler, who was raised Methodist in a church with many family ties.

“Both of my parents grew up in that church, and it was lovely place to grow up,” says Tyler. “As a child, I had both maternal and paternal grandparents in church with me, and I became really close to a lot of my grandparents’ friends; and that was really meaningful to me as a child. That generation instilled a lot of confidence in

me, and I’m grateful for having that positive experience in church as a child.

Because of that, my faith has always been meaningful to me. I’ve always been drawn to communities of faith.”

Once Tyler earns his Master of Divinity in 2027 and is ordained, he feels his Christ Church internship will certainly help to shape his future as a parish priest.

“There are a number of things that you can do as an Episcopal priest. You could be a hospital chaplain, you can be a school chaplain...but I just feel very strongly called to be a parish priest, like Michael, and to work in a parish setting,” Tyler says. “I think that there is something really special about being part of a community, and that’s what a parish is. It’s a community of people that come together at least once a week on a Sunday and support each other in their lives throughout the week as well. I feel called to lead a parish community and to walk with people through their faith journey throughout their lives.”

Wetlands OKs ‘Guilford Village West’ Plan Continued from page 1 the plan involves a “direct inland wetlands impact of 4,392 square feet as a result of the construction of the access drives, retaining walls, utilities, and associated grading.”

Given the scale of the project, the IWC approved the permit with several additional conditions following a review that included input from a third-party consultant and the town Engineering Department.

“Most of the additional conditions of approval for large projects deal with proper inspection and oversight of the work being conducted to make sure that the work is following the approved plans designed to protect the wetlands,” said town Environmental Planner Kevin Magee.

Due to the extent of the wetlands disturbance, the developer will be required to create a 6,000-square-foot replacement wetlands area elsewhere on the property.

Magee said the developer has agreed to adhere to mitigation recommendations from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which include a “three-to-one” standard for com-

pensating disturbed wetlands.

“For every 1,000 square feet that gets disturbed, there’s 3,000 square feet made up,” Magee said.

The IWC’s additional conditions also ensure that “the plans follow best management practices and that there is not going to be a change in the amount of water flow to the wetlands,” he added. The conditions are meant to minimize the potential “primary impacts” of large-scale construction on both onsite and neighboring wetlands.

“Primary impacts to the wetlands resulting from construction of large developments can come from site clearing, site blasting, stormwater runoff during construction, stormwater runoff from the completed development, and the discharge from the on-site sewage treatment system,” Magee said.

The conditions require the developer to retain environmental and geological specialists throughout various phases of construction, including soil and erosion control, stormwater treatment system installation, blasting, and bedrock removal stabilization. Work will be supervised by a state-registered professional engineer, who must submit

monthly reports to the IWC. “Failure to submit a report will result in appropriate enforcement by the Guilford Inland Wetlands Commission or its authorized agent,” according to the permit conditions.

Landscaping requirements are also included. One condition mandates that “a qualified environmental professional shall oversee the landscape plan for the Extended Detention Wetland Basins including proper liner construction, proper plantings, replanting, and monitor the site for 3 years,” to guard against invasive species and ensure ongoing wetlands protection.

With IWC approval secured, the project still needs two special permits from the Guilford Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC). The permits request exceptions to build the tallest apartment structures above the town’s 40-foot height limit and to construct two drive-through roads within the commercial section.

The PZC has held several public hearings on the proposal this year. Its next hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 3.

The Sachems Head Yacht Club (SHYC) is located in Guilford on the shore of Long Island Sound.

The clubhouse near the Thimble Islands serves as an active racing fleet and is a summer base for families and juniors involved in sailing, swimming, and tennis.

Recently, many of the kids who took sailing lessons from the club have gone on to do big things, racing around the world in different events.

Many SHYC Junior Racers have been competing near and far this summer, and many of them also race on their high school and college sailing teams too. Each of these sailors gained their sailing and racing skills as part of the SHYC Junior Programs.

Sonars & J-22’s: SHYC Sears Cup Team of David Fantarella, Fischer Smith, Carter Mikolay, and Cord Enman earned a berth at the US Sailing Sears Cup National Championship (held in San Francisco, California) by winning the Area-B Qualifiers in Sonars. The team sailed three intense days of racing on San Francisco Bay in J-22’s in over 20+ knots with ripping currents.

The squad finished 12th out of 20 teams from across the country and was the top boat from our region and the first Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association (ECSA) boat to reach the finals in over a decade! These SHYC boys also sail for Guilford High School during the school year.

In the 29er Fleet, Wylder Smith spent his summer training and competing in Europe with his teammate Wyatt Lipp. The circuit took them through Germany, Italy, and Portugal. They finished off the summer with a Gold Fleet finish of 28th (tying for top US Boat) at the World Championships held in Porto, Portugal.

Smith is also a member of the 29er US Sailing Youth National Team. During the school year, he sails on the Christchurch High

This past year, Christchurch placed fifth at Team Racing, fifth at Fleet Racing Nationals, and first at Atlantic Coast Champs, and Smith won B-Division at both fleet events.

On the c420 circuit, Avery Peterson spent the summer training and racing as part of Team 73-Sailing with her skipper Gil Hackel. They finished the summer strong with a second place finish at the National Championship, a first place finish at the CJ Buckley Team Racing Nationals, a first place finish at the North Americans, and an overall win of the Triple Crown c420 Summer Series! During the school year, Peterson sails on the St. Georges High School sailing team in Newport, RI. This past year, St. Georges placed first at New Englands, third at Atlantic Coast Champs, and fourth at Team Racing Nationals.

In International Laser Class Association (ILCA) racing news, Sasha Fichtenholtz represented SHYC at the ILCA Nationals in Oyster Bay Long Island and at the New Bedford Junior Regatta.

She placed fourth at the Mary Raferty Girl Power 420 Regatta at Weekapaug Yacht Club, and she sails for Branford High School.

Highlights among the older college-age SHYC sailors include Penelope Weekes finishing up her four-year college sailing career at Middlebury College as captain of the team and with a first place finish in A-Division at the Little Three regatta this spring. Anna Steffen finished up three fun years on the Brown sailing team. Gus Fichtenholtz just completed his Swab Summer at the Coast Guard Academy, where he will be on the varsity sailing team this fall as a Fourth Class Cadet. Ike Schutz finished

up four successful years of varsity sailing on the St. Georges High School sailing team in Newport, RI this past spring and is already off to Tulane to start his college years.

SHYC Optimist Sailing: Within the SHYC summer program this year, sailors consistently attended and placed topthree in the ECSA Opti regatta circuit. There were also sailors that showed strong results at regional and national Opti regattas, with two of them qualifying for the Optimist National Team Trials.

Sofia Fantarella placed in the top-three of Blue Fleet in every ECSA regatta she sailed in, winning first in Blue Fleet at the Pettipaug, Fishers Island, and Niantic Bay Opti Regattas and placing second overall in the ECSA Opti Blue Fleet Summer Series as well as in the ECSA Summer Opti Series. She also

competed in the Optimist Girls Nationals in California, and her result earned her a spot in the 2026 Optimist National Team Trials Regatta to be held in Fairhope, Alabama in April.

David Fantarella recently placed sixth out of 116 participants at the Opti NJ State Championship. Other notable results include second overall at Narragansett Bay Race Week Opti Regatta and fifth at Edgartown Opti Regatta. He also competed in the Optimist Nationals in Marina del Rey, California, where he qualified for the 2026 Optimist National Team Trials Regatta.

Libby Vitari raced in nearly every ECSA Opti regatta, earning her an ECSA Iron Sailor award and achieving several topfive finishes, including a first in White Fleet at the Pettipaug Regatta! She placed sixth overall in the ECSA Summer Series for White Fleet as well as in the ECSA Summer Opti Series.

Teag Ozyck sailed in all of the ECSA Opti regattas this summer, earning him an ECSA Iron Sailor award and achieving several top-three finishes, with his most notable finish being a second in Blue Fleet at Wad Club and a fifth overall out of 60 boats.

He placed fifth in the ECSA Summer Series in Blue Fleet.

SHYC Junior Regatta. Many SHYC sailors took on Green Fleet Opti Races this summer at the SHYC Junior Regatta, including Annie Ames Casper, Charlotte Leonard, Lucas Fantarella, Leah Walden, Laney Lundberg, and Christopher Valois. In RWB Opti, there were new and seasoned Opti racers, including Sofia Teag, Hugo Sandmann, Emilia Fantarella, Libby Valois, and Jack Valois. Noelle Mularski and Harper Leonard were in the doublehanded fleets in the c420 fleet, and Isla Gordon and Chloe Mularski were in the RS FEVA fleet.

Big Win for New York Caps off a Bluefish Weekend From a Category 4 to a tropical storm and finally out to sea, leaving in its wake leftover winds, Erin departed, causing fishers targeting bluefish to wonder.

Whether tournament bound or hooking into a bluefish for the fun of it, the one fish that exemplifies perseverance is the relentless, tenacious bluefish, or Pomatomus saltatrix. No matter where they are found throughout the world, their reputation as fierce, determined fighters follows them.

For whatever the reason, anglers have a love affair with striped bass. In our area, linesiders have a long history, going way back to colonial times.

They are survivors that have struggled to survive over the years and are a hardy, extremely adaptable fish.

But for a bluefish, it is the fight that draws in anglers. For its size, pound-for-pound, bluefish destroy more tackle, while fishers circle the wagons around raging feeding blitzes. It is what goes on below the surface that can be the start of a seemingly long session of pumping and stripping a hooked, weighty chopper. It then breaks the surface into famous acrobatics before sounding again.

Talk about an adrenaline rush!

The price for admission for this past weekend’s show was a ticket to the tournament. Although many fishers opted for local club tournaments, the $25,000 one did draw contenders despite the lingering threat of Erin’s path of influence. After the rain and wind subsided, two days of fishing, and, at the final bell, the unofficial results (pending validation) for the WICC Bluefish Tournament are: First Place $25,000, Zac Auer, NY (17.78); Second Place $7,500, Steven Divinetz, CT (17.16); Third Place $2.500, Rich DeFoe, CT (17.02); 20th Place

All in all, it was a nail-biting finish fraught with confusion over The Race now being included, the change in the eastern boundary extending into Block Island Sound, and the tournament rule stating near Orient Point. Plum Gut and The Race are two distinct passages into Long Island Sound. Unfortunately, the door has been opened for challenges. It would be a good idea to alter course, rethink the western boundary, and return to Collision Regulations (COLREGS) as the only boundary for future tournaments. At tournament’s end, the Leaderboard showed CT topping NY by CT (15)/NY (5). Kudos to Zac (NY) for capturing the top prize, and congratulations to all the ultimate winners! b

On The Water High pressure remained in control prior to Erin creeping up the coast before shifting to offshore and weakening. As it curved to the east, a weak frontal system approached as it passed well to the southeast, spinning off indirect impacts affecting the shoreline. High pressure returned followed by another cold front that approached from the west. Winds gusted to 30 knots with offshore waves occasionally reaching 20 feet, while in Long Island Sound, waves reached five feet or better before subsiding to around a foot. A period of rain and thunderstorms gave Connecticut a much needed bath,

while the Sound’s water temperatures held to the mid-70s.

Fishers held their plans in abeyance until weather and water conditions played out before any recreational or competitive fishing decisions were finalized. Were baitfish and the seasonal fisheries going to hold ground, gravitate to the Sound, or seek the cover of deeper offshore water to avoid collisions with Erin’s effects? No doubt, those committed to fishing had to seek out the schools of fish once their normal spots had been tried.

Leading up to Erin, fishing proceeded normally for the end of August, with the exceptions being the air and water condition/temperature fluctuations sometimes the air swinging as much as 20 degrees or more within a day. Fortunately for the fishery, average marine temperatures fluctuated only by a few degrees - lower tidal rivers slightly more.

Since the bottom fishery is generally a hardy bunch, a difference in activity was hardly perceptible. What did make an impact was the increase in dogfish, sand sharks, stingrays, and skate schools prowling the sea bottom for food. Noticeably, more of these species were caught over this past week from shore as well as by boat fishers. Sizes were all over the spectrum from fun catches to fishers that got towed around, and a few that either lost gear or had reels burn out, as some of the bigger fish could not be stopped - even with 4/0 Senator-class reels or heavier using 65-pound braid.

Good blackfish continue to be caught as their summer season winds down. From the jetties to the rock piles, these bulldogs of the sea have been putting up a show, although they have laid

back and sought protective cover on windy tides. Anglers’ main competition have been harbor seals! Porgy remain a mainstay and a popular seasonal fish to catch. Squid, seaworms, and scented strip baits are catching the most scup, however, their competition of late has been aggressive spot croaker. Both are good eats and put up a fuss on light setups. Fluke at 19.5” remain a challenge due to the number of shorts being attracted.

When setting up a drift on a vessel, large baits, when fished with a scented teaser rigged above, has been the added touch to get a mini-doormat to make a move.

Land-based enhancement areas are not as much of an issue since the size limit there is 17”.

If the weather holds, most effort will be focused on bluefish.

It is tournament time! Bigger choppers have been staged and are feeding further east with schools of smaller fish caught within sight of Faulkner’s Island.

They have been in channels, deep drop-offs, and moving water, as baitfish have been pushed in and drawn out of the shallows. Somewhere between diamond jigging, trolling, and chunking, a ranking bluefish will be caught. Weakfish, in all probability, will continue to be caught in the mix as they recently have been.

If it is striped bass that has caught your attention, then be prepared for a mix of sizes that you will have to chase as schools of baitfish (small bunker to peanuts) keep moving. Cow bass and smaller can be caught/released on live eels, chunks, and some topwaters.

Parachute rigs and Mojos for deep water have been productive as well as the ever-popular diamond jig. Pre-storm influence sharpened up feeding - though,

intermittently. Lower tidal rivers have had their moments both with light gear and fly rods.

Three notable prongs of inland freshwater fishing lately are the basses, panfish, and catfish.

There are plenty more, but for August, this trio captures much of the action.

Deep River Horseshoe League Wraps up Regular Season

The temperature was hot, the humidity was high, and the pits were dry as Week 17’s games closed the chapter on the Deep River Horseshoe League’s 17th season.

As the season’s last week came to a close, the Cards defeated the Cubs and were crowned the league champions, the Marlins swept the Pirates and won all games by double-digits, the Red Sox moved up in the standings with a 5-1 win over the White Sox, Jeremy Davis and Paul Noel led the Dodgers to a 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks, and the Reds cruised past the Orioles 5-1. The playoff teams are set. All of the teams making the playoffs have been in the top eight of the standings since Week Eight.

Cards’ Kris Toohey started game one with six straight ringers, but Cubs’ Cody Layton was determined to not let Toohey outscore his team. Going into the 10th box, Layton led Toohey 2221, but Toohey outscored him 133. However, Cubs’ Paul Chrystal’s one point in the last box plus their handicap gave the Cubs the win. In game two, the Cubs held the lead for the first half of the game, but Toohey had three straight doubles to take the lead.

The Cubs fought back but came up one point short. The Cards won the next two games. In game five, Toohey only had one box where he did not have a ringer on his way to a game high 44 points.

Layton and Warren Bellows combined for 60 points to earn the Cubs the win. In game six, the lead went back and forth between the teams until Bellows’s double in the 11th box gave the Cubs a three-point lead, but the Cards used their handicap for another one-point win. The Cards won 4-2 and are the No.1 seed in the playoffs, while the Cubs fell to eighth in the standings and the No. 8 seed. The teams will meet again in round one of the playoffs. Toohey was the top scorer for the night with a 145-point series.

The Pirates and Marlins are the No. 2 and No. 3 top scoring teams in the league, so this figured to be a high scoring match.

However, Skip Robinson’s Pirates must have picked up whatever had affected the Rangers last week. The Pirates scored 223 points (67 points below their average), 38 ringers were 20 below their average, and they only managed two doubles. For the third time in four weeks, the Marlins scored over 300 points.

They scored 332 points, 77 ringers, and 11 doubles. They are the first team this season to win all 12 head-to-head matches, to win all their games by doubledigits, and have all players top the century mark. The Marlins had the night’s top scorers in the “B” and “C” division - Dennis Allen’s 122-point series topped the “B” division, and Mike Beckwith’s 94-point series topped the “C” division score. The Marlins are the No. 6 seed, and the Pirates are the No. 5 seed.

In Week 14, Bill Beckwith’s Red Sox were in eighth place.

Their drive to make the playoffs has been sparked by Gerry Hines, whose 80-point series during this run is 20 points above his average. The Red Sox won the first four games. White Sox’s Brian Walsh matched Beckwith’s 33 points in game one, and they needed Hines’s 20 points for the

win. In game two, White Sox’s Brady Miller matched Beckwith’s 31 points, and this time, the Red Sox needed Anthony Malerba’s 21 points for the win. Despite all players struggling to score in double figures in game three, the Red Sox managed to win. Beckwith edged Miller 35-34 in game five, but the White Sox used their handicap for their lone win. The Red Sox won the final game and the match 5-1. The Red Sox climbed to fourth place in the standings and are the No. 4 seed.

Beckwith’s 131-point series was the third leading “A” division score, and this was only the second time this season where he scored all four games in the 30s.

For the second week in a row, the Rangers’ scoring woes continued, and it also affected the Yankees. The Rangers’ 219 points were only five points better than last week, and their 30 ringers were the fewest of the season. For the Yankees, Paul Stevens has been their leading scorer in three of the last four weeks. In game one, Stevens’ back-to-back doubles at the end of the game sealed the win. The Rangers were the only players to top 20 points in game two for the win. Stevens’s second game with back-to-back

doubles led them to their second win in game three. The Rangers won game four by three points on Heery’s ringer in the last box and their handicap. The Yankees won the last two games and the match 4-2. The Yankees are the No. 3 seed, while the Rangers, who are the only playoff team not to have scored 300 points, are the No. 7 seed.

Sheryl Serviss’s Tigers still hoped for a playoff spot, but it would take a big win against Frank Rausch’s Braves. Tigers’ Ray Smith kept their hopes alive in game one, as he had a personal best game of 31 points, nine ringers, and a double, as he combined with Serviss’s 32 points to lead to an easy win. In game two, the Braves managed to overcome the handicap for a two-point win and then followed it up by winning the next two, thereby ending the Tigers’ chances to make the playoffs. Serviss and Harvey Strausser both had their best games, combining for 61 points in game five for a double-digit win.

The Tigers won the last game and split the match. The Braves are the No. 2 seed. Rausch’s 143point series was the second leading “A” score, and Peter Furmonavicius’s 105-point series was the second leading “B” score. Smith’s personal best series of 92 points was the top “C” division score.

Kyle Sunderland substituted for Orioles’ Adam Fortier. The teams split the first two games and then the Reds went on to win the final four. The Reds finished the season with 51 wins and 51 losses. Reds’ Chip Goodrich had his second game in a row topping the century mark, and Reds’ John O’Brien’s season high 89-point series was the third leading “C” scorer. The Orioles continued their streak of losing on odd numbered games.

Paul Noel substituted for Dodgers’ Ed Turner. Dodgers’ Jeremy Davis started game one on his way to tying his season best series of 124 points with a 38-point game for their first win.

Diamondbacks’ Mike Zanelli Jr. responded in game two with a 39point game to tie the match. The Dodgers used their handicap to break the tie and win game three.

The Dodgers went on to win the

final three games. In the head-tohead match of Davis vs. Zanelli Jr., they went 2-2, and Zanelli Jr. outscored Davis 130-124. Noel’s 102-point series was his personal best, which included 33 points in game six.

Rockies’ Damin Roberts is known for his slow starts, but in game one, Roberts had his season best game of 38 points, leading to the win over Mark Goodale’s Mets. The Mets won the next two games before the Rockies behind Roberts’s 32 points won game four. The Mets finished their season by winning the last two games. Mets’ Mike Shashok’s 102-point series was his second best of the season. Roberts’s 118point series was his season’s best.

With the score tied after 12 boxes, Mike Zanelli Sr.’s Giants used their handicap to win game one by three points over Tony Cutone’s Angels. Giants’ Frank Jolly led the team to wins in the next two games, and in the following two games, Cutone scored 30+points in both for the Angels’ two wins in the match. The Giants won the last game by three points using their handicap, and the Giants won 4-2.

Toohey was the “A” division’s leading scorer in points, ringers, and doubles. Furmonavicius was the “B” division leading scorer in points and ringers, while Allen scored the most doubles. For the “C” division, Anthony Conkling was the leading scorer in all three categories.

The first week back at school can make even the most organized households feel like they’re running late. Between early alarms, after-school activities, and rising grocery costs, packing a healthy lunch every day may feel overwhelming. The good news? Experts say keeping kids fueled doesn’t require chef skills or expensive ingredients — just a few smart strategies. b

Safety First: Keep Lunches Out of the “Danger Zone” When it comes to lunch, food safety is just as important as nutrition. UConn Extension notes that bacteria grow rapidly between 40 and 140 degrees — the “danger zone” — and perishable foods shouldn’t stay there for more than two hours, or just one hour if it’s 90 degrees or hotter.

Experts recommend refrigerating food before packing, using insulated carriers, and freezing a yogurt or water bottle overnight so it keeps everything cool until lunch.

Whole-grain pasta with zucchini and Parmesan offers a quick, nutritious option for a school lunch or weeknight meal.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate guidance suggests filling half a lunchbox with fruits and vegetables, and dividing the other half between grains and protein, with room for dairy or fortified soy alternatives.

“Healthy snacks don’t have to be complicated,” said Stacy Chandna, MS, CIP, with Connecticut Children’s. She suggests easy pairings such as fruit with cheese, raw veggies with hummus, or a simple yogurt parfait.

Prepping ahead — slicing vegetables, portioning dips, or boiling eggs for the week — can reduce the morning scramble, she added.

Beth Chatfield, MS, RD, a registered dietitian at Connecticut Children’s, emphasized keeping food both safe and fun.

“An ice pack or a frozen water bottle keeps food cold and safe — and gives kids a slushy drink by lunchtime,” she said.

Chatfield also recommends thinking outside the box: cold pasta salad with lean protein and veggies, wraps with chicken Caesar or lean turkey, fruit and cheese plates with whole-grain crackers, muffins baked ahead and frozen for easy grab-and-go, and even leftover fried rice, packed cold, as a satisfying change.

“Kids like to dunk,” Chatfield added. “Including healthy dips with vegetables or finger foods keeps lunch interesting.”

The First Congregational Church of Madison will welcome the legendary Tommy Dorsey Orchestra for a special performance on Friday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. as part of its Music at the Meetinghouse concert series.

Known as “The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing,” Tommy Dorsey was a defining figure of the Big Band era. Today, the orchestra that bears his name continues to bring the unforgettable sound of the Swing Era to audiences around the world.

Two Events Highlight CT Freedom Trail Month Press Release from the New Haven Museum

The New Haven Museum (NHM) will celebrate Connecticut Freedom Trail Month with two free events focused on the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman. The programs, tailored for both adults and children, will take place on Thursday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025.

On Thursday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m., Deirdre Cooper Owens, professor of history and Africana studies at the University of Connecticut, will present a lecture titled “Harriet Tubman: A Disabled American Hero.” The evening will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Cooper Owens will explore Tubman’s life through the lens of disability, examining how her experiences with narcolepsy, sleeping fits, and hallucinations shaped her leadership and the perceptions of those around her.

“Although there are numerous biographies about Harriet Tubman’s life, none of them delve into her disabilities and how her conditions impacted her decision-making and life,” says Cooper Owens. She will also discuss how Tubman’s identity—Black, female, enslaved, and disabled—intersected with her activism and philanthropy. This lecture is part of NH250, New Haven Museum’s series of events aligned with the national America 250 initiative. Registration is required at newhavenmuseum.org.

The second event, on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m., invites children and families to experience Tubman’s story through an interactive storytelling session led by author and educator Yvette Cole. Based on her children’s book Harriet’s Dinner Party, the multimedia program invites young audiences to explore history with all five senses, featuring a video story time, music, themed props, and sing-alongs.

In Cole’s imaginative tale, a young girl dines at Harriet Tubman’s home alongside historical guests like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Ida B. Wells.

The program concludes with a themed activity, book signing, and photo opportunity with the author. Cole, a Connecticut kindergarten teacher and first-time author, wrote the book to help fill the gap in accessible history resources for young children. “I wanted to help fill that gap by focusing on figures like Harriet Tubman, whose legacy deserves to be shared and celebrated with every generation,” she says.

Madison Lyric Stage Presents an Evening of Suspense, Music and Murder Press Release from Madison Lyric Stage

Madison Lyric Stage, a professional theater company on the Connecticut shoreline, will present Four Murders in Forty Years, an original evening of suspenseful music and operatic drama, from Sept. 19 to 21. The production weaves together a haunting series of vignettes centered on the lives of individuals inhabiting the same tenement apartment across four decades.

The evening features the English-language presentation of two dramatic oneact operas: The Medium by Gian Carlo Menotti and La Voix Humaine (The Human Voice) by Francis Poulenc and Jean Cocteau, among additional operatic excerpts. Each piece represents a different decade in the apartment’s turbulent history, revealing moments of grief, betrayal, obsession—and murder.

In The Medium, a fraudulent psychic, Madame Flora, manipulates her clients’ grief for profit—until a real supernatural event throws her into madness. In The Human Voice, a woman named Elle is unraveling on the telephone, clinging to a toxic love as her emotional world crumbles.
