Give the Gift of Hearing this Holiday Season Our hearing keeps us in touch with people we love, especially around the holidays. If you or someone you know struggles to understand conversation, has tinnitus or ringing in the ears, needs the TV louder, or is always saying “what?”, consider giving the gift of hearing. Due to today’s technology, in one quick visit you can see your options, have a listening demonstration, and leave with better hearing.
FREE
Professional Ear Exam
FREE
One of our Hearing Specialists will provide a professional examination of your ears and assess your hearing. Specialized testing will determine how well you understand speech, particularly in background noise. In the event that you have a hearing loss, you will have the opportunity to evaluate hearing aids that have been accurately and professionally tuned specifically for your hearing loss. Your instrument will be chosen from several different brands based upon your specific needs, value, sound quality, and reliability.

Postcards from the past
Branford Point House. Photo courtesy of the Branford Historical Society.
By Alicia Gomez
The shoreline has always been beautiful, and that beauty has been witnessed and remembered across generations. Historical societies have done an incredible job preserving what life looked like then by capturing everyday moments—a quiet downtown street, a swim at the lake, a harbor layered with work and tide. These postcards remind us that the places we love now have been loved for a long time and will continue to be loved long after we are gone.

BRANFORD
Indian Point House. Photo courtesy of the Branford Historical Society.
Branford Point House. Branford Point, c. early 1900s. The Branford Point House sits close to the shoreline, its wide porch facing the calm water. Tall trees frame the building, and a long stretch of lawn leads to the beach. The hotel was one of Branford’s earliest summer resorts, a place where visitors could arrive by trolley and spend slow days by the shore. In 1912, the town of Branford purchased the property, and the hotel was razed. The land remains a public gathering place today, known simply as Branford Point Beach. Indian Point House. Stony Creek, c. early 1900s. The Indian Point House stands just above the shoreline, its wraparound porch looking out toward the water. Shaded by tall trees, the building has the relaxed openness of a place meant for long summer stays. Known as one of Stony Creek’s most recognizable seaside hotels, it welcomed guests for nearly ninety years before the building was lost to a fire in 1964.
Owenego House. Photo courtesy of the Branford Historical Society.
Owenego House. Indian Neck, c. early 1900s. The Owenego overlooks the Long Island Sound from a grassy rise, with a long porch and open lawn stretching toward the shoreline. The view is broad and breezy. The hotel opened in 1847, becoming one of Branford’s most enduring seaside gathering places. Unlike many of the shoreline’s grand hotels, the Owenego still welcomes guests today.
CHESTER
Cedar Lake. Chester, c. 1920s. Families gathered beneath the shade of trees at Cedar Lake, parking their cars and wagons along the sandy bank and spending summer days fishing, swimming, and cooling off in the water. The lake was quiet then, more retreat than recreation site. Today, Cedar Lake is lively with swim lessons, kayaks, and live music on Sundays. However, its role remains the same: a place where the town comes to slow down and exhale.

Chester Center. Chester, 1920. A horse rests at the crossroads while the Chester House Hotel stands just up the hill. Today, the former hotel building is home to Leif Nilsson’s Spring Street Studio and Gallery. On the stone wall, “CHESTER” is spelled out for travelers on the Shoreline Trolley that once ran through town. Though the storefronts and roads have changed, the center still carries its familiar sense of welcome.

Niantic River Bridge. Niantic, c. early 1900s. The railroad bridge spans the Niantic River, linking the shoreline by rail. This earlier structure has since been replaced, but the crossing point remains a familiar part of the local landscape.

All about hygge

A winter guide to comfort and connection By Elle Rahilly
As the days grow shorter and winter’s chill sets in, we find ourselves craving warmth. That’s where hygge (pronounced “hoo-ga”) comes in—a Danish lifestyle concept centered on contentment and wellbeing. In Denmark, where winters stretch long and dark, hygge offers an antidote to the seasonal blues by inviting us to cultivate connection, coziness, and self-care. At its core, hygge is about finding joy in life’s small, everyday pleasures. In a world that often feels overstimulating, it reminds us to pause and appreciate life’s simple moments. While the word doesn’t translate directly into English, hygge embodies a sense of warmth that can make the colder months not only bearable but profoundly comforting. Read on to learn how to embrace the lifestyle and make this winter your coziest yet. 18 winter | on the shoreline
Set the vibe
Hygge begins with creating a snug atmosphere at home. Because natural light is scarce during these months, make the most of what you have with soft, ambient lighting. String lights or candles add a dreamy glow to any room, with scents like cinnamon, pine, or vanilla offering an extra touch of warmth. Texture is also key. Layering tactile comforts like plush cushions, woolen throws, and heavy blankets transforms any space into a welcoming retreat. Extend that same coziness to your wardrobe with fuzzy socks, chunky knits, and oversized scarves that wrap you in softness.
“I personally love knitting sweaters during the colder season,” says owner Cindy DiCesare of Driftwood Yarns in Groton. “There is nothing better than relaxing in the evening with my knitting and a hot beverage. And creating something with your own two hands is very satisfying.” According to DiCesare, who considers the fiber arts central to hygge, winter is the perfect time to explore knitting or crocheting. “The softness of the yarn and even just having your work in progress in your lap can be very warm and soothing,” she explains.

Connect with nature
While hygge celebrates the coziness of home, it also encourages a connection to nature. It’s easy to hunker down when temperatures drop, but even a little fresh air can feel restorative. Try a walk along the waterfront, a new hiking trail, or an evening of stargazing. Bring nature inside, too. Seasonal greens, potted plants, or a vase of branches can bridge the gap between your home’s warmth and the quiet beauty of a Connecticut winter.
Slow down and unplug
Hygge also reminds us to unplug and slow the pace. Life on the shoreline can feel busy even during the quieter months, making it all the more important to carve out moments for rest. Step away from the screen and pick up a new hobby or sink into a good book. For Sarah Borgnis-Tobin of Montgomery & Taggert, a romance
bookshop in the heart of Chester, comfort comes through literature—especially love stories with happily-ever-after endings. “There’s nothing more ‘hygge’ than going to your favorite independent bookstore with a friend and browsing the shelves to pick out your next read,” says Borgnis-Tobin, who opened the shop with Elizabeth Tucker in 2024 as Connecticut’s first romanceonly bookstore. Montgomery & Taggert’s curated shelves feature subgenres spanning historical, fantasy, paranormal, science fiction, and contemporary romance. Yet Borgnis-Tobin says there’s a special comfort in HEA (happily-ever-after) tales. “Despite challenges and plot-twists, romance readers find peace of mind knowing that one way or another, the main character will endure and find love,” she explains. The shop hosts a monthly book club in collaboration with Little House Brewery, where readers can connect over a shared love of storytelling.

All about hygge Continued
Nourish yourself
Food and drink are essential to hygge. It’s less about elaborate meals and more about comfort and nourishment. To beat the winter chill, opt for hearty soups, slow-cooked stews, and mugs of cocoa or mulled wine that warm you from the inside out. Create a “hot drink station” in your kitchen, stocked with your favorite teas, spices, and mugs at the ready. Don’t forget the joy of baking. The scent of bread or seasonal sweets rising in the oven is as comforting as the flavors themselves, and there’s something grounding about the ritual of measuring and mixing. Plus, a slice of fresh bread or a cup of cider can make even the coldest day feel cozy.
Remain present
Another cornerstone of hygge is mindfulness. By being present and practicing gratitude, we transform ordinary moments like the crackle of a fire or the stillness of a winter afternoon into ones worth cherishing.
22 winter | on the shoreline
“I’d recommend a handknit project, like a scarf or shawl,” says owner Paulette Meijer of KnittyGrittyYarnGirl in Niantic. “The act of making is meditative and satisfying, and the finished piece is a cozy reminder of care—whether it’s for yourself or someone you love.” For Meijer, winter evenings mean tea in hand, dogs by her side, and a project in progress. “At KnittyGrittyYarnGirl, we help people slow down and savor the season through the simple joy of making,” she says. The shop hosts classes and live events where people can unwind and find community through the rhythm of knitting. Hygge also celebrates togetherness, but not the kind that fills a room. Rather, it’s found through intimacy and presence. Think board games by the fire or a favorite movie shared while the wind howls outside. As the year draws to a close, winter offers a chance to rest and reset. Whether it’s curling up with a good book or spending quality time with those who matter most, hygge allows you to slow down and savor the understated beauty of the season.

Good taste
Bui Vietnamese Cuisine
At Bui Vietnamese Cuisine, comfort isn’t rushed—it’s worth the wait. The first thing you notice is the smell—the seasonings and spices exude the feeling of warmth, home cooking, and love. The space feels like a hug, like you’ve finally come home. The food is the culmination of decades of family recipes and love for the shoreline community. Owner Steven Cortavarria has spent two years cultivating this feeling for patrons in Branford. “All of our food is either a family recipe or our own creation,” he says. “So much effort goes into what we do—it’s a culmination of decades of experience and family dinners.” The chef, who is also Cortavarria’s mother-in-law, pours her Vietnamese heritage into every dish: spicy chicken sandwiches sautéed in their signature chili paste, pork marinated in a honey-based glaze, and a rich lemongrass curry. The housemade chili paste, now bottled and sold online, adds a kick of flavor that locals use on everything from eggs to pizza. Bui Vietnamese Cuisine is located at 4 Brushy Plain Rd. in Branford. Take-out hours are from 12 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Dining room hours are 12 to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday for lunch, and 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday for dinner. The Tin Peddler
The Tin Peddler in North Stonington has a way of turning comfort food into something unexpected. Co-owner Mariah Pfiffner describes the restaurant’s approach as “cozy dishes, nostalgia, and food for the soul”—a philosophy that carries through every season. The menu is built around warmth and creativity, transforming familiar flavors into something distinctly their own. A recent favorite, their Family-Style Fried Chicken Dinner, captures that spirit perfectly: a buttermilk-brined bird served with mashed potatoes, baked skillet mac and cheese, and jalapeño butter cornbread meant to be shared. It’s the kind of meal that brings people together, just as the team behind The Tin Peddler intended. Contemporary, unpretentious, and innovative, this North Stonington favorite embodies the comfort and community that define shoreline dining.
The Tin Peddler is located at 230 Norwich-Westerly Rd. in North Stonington. It is open Mondays and Fridays from 12 to 9 p.m, Tuesday through Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 12 to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information visit thetinpeddler.com or call 860-245-4249.

There’s a special kind of magic inside a local bookstore—the kind that hums quietly between well-worn pages and friendly conversations. Along the Connecticut shoreline, independent bookstores are doing more than keeping the printed word alive; they’re fostering creativity, connection, and a shared love of storytelling that binds their communities together. From Guilford to Mystic, each shop has its own unique personality and purpose, yet all share a devotion to the readers who walk through their doors—or browse their shelves from the comfort of their own homes.
Harbor Books, Old Saybrook
This new and used bookstore sits where the Connecticut River meets the Long Island Sound. Established in 1988, it boasts a nautical section, a strong selection of local-interest books (including titles about Katharine Hepburn, longtime resident of Old Saybrook), and a welcoming, historictown vibe. Harbor Books, located at 146 Main Street in Old Saybrook, is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays, with extended holiday and summer hours. For more information, call 860-388-6850 or visit harborbooks.com.
Breakwater Books, Guilford

Tucked along Guilford’s historic Town Green, Breakwater Books has been part of the town’s rhythm since 1972. Its familiar storefront, bright windows, and shelves lined with local authors have long made it a favorite stop for readers of all ages. “Breakwater Books has been Guilford’s bookstore since 1972, so its longevity and
history with the town are very special,” says store owner Dani Howard, who, along with her husband, Rob Howard, took over the store in 2023. “Since we took over, we’ve added a strong partnership with the Guilford Fund for Education, supporting their educational grants and initiatives.” That connection extends to the next generation of readers. “We connect with our younger readers through fundraiser book fairs at local elementary and middle schools,” she explains. “These are great joint events that allow the school librarians and PTO to choose the books they want included in the book fairs and cater to the interests of their students.” Breakwater also supports author events at both the Guilford Free Library and the Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library in Stony Creek. At the same time, frequent in-store signings by local writers keep the shelves alive with hometown pride. Breakwater Books, located at 81 Whitfield Street in Guilford, is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

The Golden Owl, New London
This charming and eclectic bookstore combines new and used books with a plant bar, teas and herbs, local art, and other curiosities. Rooms are not just filled with books, but plenty to explore. It’s a place where browsing means more than choosing a title–it means lingering, discovering something unexpected, and connecting with community through creative meet ups regularly hosted by the shop. The Golden Owl is located at 19 Golden Street in New London. It is closed for renovation as of the time of writing following a flood, with plans to reopen as soon as possible. The shop typically welcomes visitors from 12 to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 12 to 5 p.m. Sundays. For more information, visit goldenowl.shop or email info@goldenowl.shop.

Bank Square Books, Mystic
In Mystic, Bank Square Books redefines what a modern indie bookstore can be— part literary hub, part creative playground. “To me, the mission of any forwardthinking independent bookstore is to serve its community,” says the owner, Douglas Riggs. “Yes, when you pare everything down, Bank Square Books is a retail store that needs to make sales and keep the lights on, but it’s essential that we function as a third space for a variety of people who aren’t necessarily dropping by for a purchase.” Inclusivity and imagination sit at the heart of the store’s programming. A rotation of book clubs explores romances, small presses, queer literature, and literary fiction. Monthly displays highlight diverse authors and themes, while events range from author signings to a monthly Dungeons & Dragons gathering.
Bank Square Books, located at 80 Stonington Road, Suite 8 in Mystic, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays and Mondays. For more information, call 860-536-3795 or visit banksquarebooks.com.
