From the iconic Ivoryton Playhouse, where Broadway-caliber productions light up the stage, to the locally loved art galleries and independent shops in Chester, culture and creativity thrive here. Deep River and Centerbrook are home to beloved community spaces, including farmers markets, summer concerts, and seasonal festivals that bring neighbors together.

Whether you’re strolling along Essex’s historic Main Street, enjoying lunch by the water in Deep River, or catching live music in Chester’s vibrant village center, there’s always something new to explore.

We encourage you to support local businesses, connect with local organizations, and participate in the many volunteer opportunities and community events throughout the year.

We’re so glad you’re here.

t starts with just a few birds, pepper flakes appearing above the distant tree line. Then suddenly, the sky swarms and buzzes with the sound of wings. Swallows dip and dive along the river, catching insects and skimming the water’s surface. From a kayak, the sound is like a hurricane. Just before dark, they drop like a black tornado into the reeds near Goose Island. Then— silence.

Each fall, tree swallows gather by the thousands to roost in the lower Connecticut River Valley, creating one of the most awe-inspiring natural events on the East Coast. The invasive phragmites growing near Goose Island offer them refuge from predators as they prepare to continue their journey south.

“They’ve got a long way to go,” said Sharon Baldi, a naturalist and onboard narrator for the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat Swallow Cruises.

Those who witness the phenomenon say it’s almost indescribable.

“All of a sudden, nothing is happening—it’s like 7:15, 7:30—and then as soon as it starts getting twilight dusk, they start swarming,” Baldi said. “They go really high in

the sky and drop like a tornado. It’s literally black, and the sound... It’s like a hurricane, the sound of the beating wings.”

Matthew Bell of the Connecticut Audubon Society said the density of the birds is so high that storm radar often picks them up as cloud formations. Even onboard radar systems on some boats can detect them.

Several organizations offer guided excursions to see the swallows up close. The Connecticut Audubon Society’s EcoTravel team partners with the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat for four fall trips annually, typically on Sunday evenings between late August and mid-September. Naturalists such as Bell and fellow Audubon staffer Andy Griswold narrate the cruises. Tickets and more information are available at ctaudubon.org.

The Essex Steam Train & Riverboat also runs its own Swallow Cruises, including Friday night departures and additional Saturdays. Some trips depart from the station in Essex, while others offer direct boarding on the riverboat, Adventure. Dates and details can be found at essexsteamtrain.com.

Baldi, who narrates many of the Essex cruises, said the

riverboat’s size makes it a good option for people with mobility issues. It’s more accessible than many smaller watercrafts, making it also easier for older adults to participate.

With the growing popularity of the migration season, Baldi encourages visitors to respect the space and the birds. Large crowds and loud voices risk disturbing the

The Connecticut Audubon Society continues to advocate for broader conservation measures. Bell said the group has worked to ban insecticides that harm swallows

Tree swallow numbers have declined in Connecticut by nearly 19 percent over the last decade, according to data from eBird, a project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The lower Connecticut River remains a critical refuge for them and many

“I always tell people to think about the stories of each bird,” Bell said. “Just like all of us, there’s a story behind each individual bird that

has brought them to this location. Is it their first time? Their fourth? Have they come from somewhere close by, or all the way from the Atlantic provinces of Canada? What challenges have they faced? Where are they going next? Thinking about these, and other, questions is such an important aspect of nature, not just in respect to the tree swallows, but to all wildlife.”

Life on the River

The history of Chester, Deep River, and Essex is rooted in the waterways large and small that shaped the industry of the area. Modern uses have changed, but the towns remain strongly linked to the water, most often as a source for relaxation and inspiration. Here’s a list of some of the ways to hit the water along the lower Connecticut River valley.

Chester

1. Cedar Lake

Cedar Lake on West Main Street is Chester’s summer swimming destination. The main beach has a 50,000 square foot swimming area (a smaller beach on Cedar Lake Road is unstaffed and has no designated swimming area) and is adjacent to the by Camp Hazen YMCA. The main beach features seasonal lifeguard coverage, picnic tables, a pavilion, grills, and a food concession. The beaches require patrons to have a permit. Details and prices may be found at chesterct.org.

2. Parker’s Point Boat Launch

This 0.6 acre boat launch facility is located at the end of Parker’s Point Road on the Connecticut River. It offers boat trailer parking and a picnic area with a view. The shore is a favorite winter eagle viewing location. A permit is required for parking. Details and prices may be found at chesterct.org.

4. Plattwood Park

Deep River’s largest park offers a beach with swimming, picnic area, skate park, a ballfield, and a fitness course. It’s also home to the Dry Pants Yacht Club, which sails a competitive field of radio-controlled model sailboats. Free for residents with a permit, non-residents pay a daily fee of $40 per vehicle.
