Artist Gabi Trinkaus describes herself as a “media thief ‘. She cuts glossy magazines into small pieces and to make collage portraits and urban landscapes that reference the aesthetics of advertising and media. Common poses, ideals of beauty and offers of goods are picked up and sampled in her large scale works. In these make-overs of faces and bodies Trinkaus produces a superficially perfect shape and lures the viewer into a visual trap by the media, consciously taken up as bait for the eye.

In urban landscapes Gabi Trinkaus raises questions about our private and public identities, social roles and scope for action, finding their social and architectural space in the urban environment. The brightness of the city derives from the views presented and supposedly glamorous flashing cameras of the magazines. Between labels and text fragments in addition to champagne glasses, cars, watches, guns and handcuffs in the large-scale visual illusions woven and point to the ambivalence of global life.

BLOC28 by Disney is a project that encompasses artist visualisations of one of the world’s most recogniseable characters…

H o w d i d B L O C 2 8 c o m e a b o u t ?

The idea for BLOC28 started about 3 years ago. We thought it would be interesting to work with artists experienced in non-traditional media like murals, graffiti, and street art. It started as just a few graphics, but it was soon developed into its own program.

We knew there were artists out there that were inspired by Disney characters as kids, so we wanted to see how Mickey could be reinterpreted.

What makes BLOC28 appealing?

First and foremost, the art. BLOC28 is an art-based program with traditional works on canvas and board as the inspiration rather than a shoe design or some other object on to which an artist’s work is photoshopped or “skinned.”

The idea was always to have new pieces of actual art that would enter into the canon of artists that have worked with Disney, like Dali. The appreciation of the epic scale that only art can rise to is what makes BLOC28 a unique program. view more

USA Approach a group of skaters anywhere; chances are that at least one of them is skating a deck that David Flores designed or illustrated. With collaborations and graphics for Shorty’s, Stussy, Oakley, XLarge, Kidrobot, Om Records, M3 Snowboards, Nike, Adidas, etc... UNITED KINGDOM Aroe started writing during the initial graffiti wave that hit the UK during the early’80s breakdance explosion. Over the last two and a half decades, he has pursued graffiti with the last seven or eight being the most fruitful. As a writer, Aroe strived to make a name for himself in most of the key areas in the UK. USA was born and raised in Torrance, California, just outside of Los Angeles. He grew up on a diet of cereal and Saturday morning cartoons. Upon his discovery of the crayon and gleaning inspiration from cartoons, Greg began drawing on his parents’ walls and unearthed his calling. His desire to create quickly grew into a full-time obsession and later, a career. In 1993, Greg was introduced to the spray can, which became the deviant impetus behind his art career. It was through this medium, along with the influences of other graffiti artists, that his artistic style evolved. Throughout the years, Greg explored other mediums and now creates mainly with brushes and acrylics and pen and paper, though he still picks up the spray can to paint murals from time to time. Greg’s art is seen in a wide variety of industries from clothing to video games and has also come to life in the form of toys. USA SLICK is a Los Angeles based artist who spray painted his way from the shores of Hawaii to worldwide recognition with his aerosol stylings. He is credited for founding some of the most influential streetwear brands in the industry. He is an artist with a sharp wit and even sharper eye that has spawned waves of countless imitators.

SLICK’s art has been featured in countless documentaries, magazines, music videos, feature films and albums, most notably, cover art for the album “The Bizarre Ride to the Pharcyde”. JAPAN Suiko was born in Oita located in the western part of Japan and grew up in Hiroshima which has become the base for all his activities. He has traveled around Europe and Asia and all of Japan and has collaborated with various artists. makeup, hair, clothes and location will look and think about props that will enhance the shot. It is important to think about colour, composition and try to imagine how all the different element will work together in the final image.

On completing my masters degree I had an exhibition at the Mall Gallery, which lead on to becoming a freelance fashion photographer, getting an agent and have been working on various exciting client work over the last year.

I did a shoot with Katie Melua to mark the release of her new album, the images appeared on the cover of Sunday Times Culture Magazine and in various other magazines. I have also recently shot editorials and covers for Sublime Magazine, Iconography Magazine, Gothic Beauty Magazine amongst others.

My work has often been described as striking, bold, avante gar de and dramatic. I like to create imaginary worlds within my images and often contrast beauty with darkness to create a surreal atmosphere within my photos. view more

This boy, who flew in silently through his bedroom window, lithe as a fairy, and awakened the man with a lullaby. Hook

never dreamed; always clothed in the limitless black, and this fateful evening was struck with a sliver of light and the voice of what must be Love Incarnate, filling him from hair to toe and as he opened his eyes to the beautiful boy above him he was not afraid.

He gazed into his dark young eyes, lost in the Eden nestled there. Not a word was spoken, not until the boy took his hand and pressed into it a thimble, then leaned down and planted a kiss, there, on the cracked and hungry lips of the man now shivering in lust and loss.

The swooning captain murmured “No..” as the boy vanished into the night,

his mischievous shadow gliding with him. James Hook could not return to sleep. He hid in his room for days, unable to stop the torrent of tears and lashes of lust that wracked his soul. Not until a week later, when the boy returned, with that same small smile and lithe, muscled body.

He knelt down before the boy, wordlessly laying himself waste, in hopes of another sliver of that light, another verse of that song, another brush of those not-soinnocent lips. And each time, the boy would leave.

Again and again they repeated this routine until it became a dance, entitled Unrequited, and each time the boy would leave, with little more than a whisper, and the captain would howl into the pores of the wooden floor of his imprisoning ship.

The children, listening to his fragmented tale will likely hear of a great battle, which cost the captain his hand. They will never hear of his shameless begging for the boy’s touch, his kiss just once more before he left, his desperation driving his right hand to his sword. They won’t hear the

captain’s offer to remove his own hand if the boy would reward him with a kiss, and they’ll never see the boy’s smile widen in response.

They’ll never hear the slice of steel through skin, bone and cartilage as the captain severed his hand and offered it to the boy.

They’ll never see the boy take the newly separated hand, drop his little tights, and wrap the dying fingers around his young throbbing organ.

They’ll never see the lightning fast strokes, nor the beads of sweat that followed, nor the stream of sticky white that painted the captain’s face crimson and surrender. And the boy left, with nary a kiss. Never again a kiss.

The children will never know the reason James Hook will not rest.

They won’t know of his love, his passion, his need, his violent redemption.

Before the boy, he never knew of the light the children spoke of. And nor did he, after.

Downtown57 Ashes 57’s work takes its roots in the buzz and lights of cities, urban landscapes and the music that accompanies them. Downtown57 is inspired by New York’s early 80s cultural scene and Downtown81. The exhibition presents a series of black and white drawings that tell a fantastic journey through the 57 boroughs from Brooklyn to Manhattan, from Queens back to London; the artist looks for the one track which will make the world turn around. Ashes57 previously worked with Shepard Fairey in his Los Angeles design studio, collaborat- ing on a number of Obey exhibitions and street art projects; Downtown57 will unveil a series of exclusive snaps of the artist at work in the view more

streets of London, Boston and New York.

Art Director of COOL’Eh Magazine, LAVA Collective and SWAMP81, Ashes also produced posters and flyers for the legendary Dub War parties; her illustrations and designs have graced numerous dubstep and hip hop labels labels such as Deep Medi and DMZ and she was invited by The Wu-Tang Clan to illustrate the cover of their 2009 album Enter the Dubstep. Recent work include collaboration with the Future Me TV series for MTV and board graphics for Palmer Snowboards. Also co-founder of LAVA Collective, she curated the collective’s first highly suc- cessful group show at the Truman Brewery in London’s East End.

STEPHANIE TAYLOR ‘wiffles’ 2010 Fiber Print 8 x 10 inches NEW YORK, USA

Stephanie Taylor’s first exhibition at the gallery “Pork Shank Stew” This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in New York.

Stephanie Taylor’s work draws from an archive of linguistic twists – puns, rhymes, and otherwise – as the basis of invented narratives that are realized as works in sculpture, print, video, and audio. Language is the cornerstone of Taylor’s exhibitions, which she composes based on select words that reference the specific location of the exhibition. These words are then broken apart into syllables, which Taylor derives rhymes from, and strings the resulting words together to create a story. The visual works take their cue from these often absurd and humorous tales. The title of the exhibition, Pork Shank Stew, is a phonetic extrapolation of “Marc Jancou,” in which the name of the gallery is pronounced in a heavy view more

Boston accent. Set in Boston, the story features a street vendor who rises at dawn with his dog, Wiffles, and sells Boston’s traditional street food, pork shank stew. He also sells honey, and uses it in his unusually sweet stew recipe, which includes poi from Hawaii in addition to fawn. He survives mostly on gin and legumes, perhaps a stone fruit on a good day, and shad row on wedding days only. The exhibition includes cast bronze, aluminum, and papier-mâché sculptures, as well as sketches, prints, video, and an audio work, which is performed by Arlys Alford and the Laura Steenberge Brass Group.

BRAZIL Fernando Chamarelli is a graphic designer, illustrator and visual artist. After initially drawing cartoons, caricatures and portraits he later became involved in street art and tattooing: it is by merging these different mediums that he creates his art.

Chamarelli lives in Brazil, a multicultural country of contrasts, many of which are reflected in his work. Everpresent, is the influence of Brazilian popular culture and pre-Columbian indigenous art on the Sao Paulo-based artist. His work includes mosaic, geometric elements, organic forms and harmonic lines connecting symbols, legends, philosophies, religions and customs of ancient and modern civilizations.

UNITED KINGDOM “Who the hell are you!?” shouted Jon Carter, infamous DJ and friend of Norman Cook.

The room was packed, people were jumping around like the floor was made of rubber and we were playing the set of our lives. This was out first DJ gig as Phantom Beats in London so we knew we had to totally rock it. So we just concentrated on what we knew best, by playing our favourite tunes, leaping around, whistling, shouting, piggyback mixing (only works with 2 DJs and it’s advisable that the stronger and heavier of the two is on the bottom), drinking lots and generally having an absolute blast.

The club night was the Heavenly Jukebox/ Social made famous for attracting DJs likethe Chemical Brothers, and the club was the fantastic Turnmills in Clerkenwell (which unfortunately joined the London club grave in 2008). The music was eclectic and we played everything from funk and beats to classic house and rave. “If you’re playing here again, let me know and I’ll fly back over”, enthused one guy from San Francisco. Myself and my DJ partner Neil Phantom were smiling like never before, with lots of people thanking us for the time of their lives. As the lights came up, the promoters came up to us and said they’d never seen the room like that, so they’d just had an emergency meeting. This was a crucial moment that took our DJ career

can put into effect. After many years of zooming around the place, performing at some of the world’s best festivals, playing on Radio 1, DJing with some of the best, I yearned for more creativity and wanted to try something different.

Growing up in a household where my mum was classically trained and my dad was a DJ certainly provided inspiration and helped develop my passion for music and entertaining people.

from residents in Cardiff, to a hectic lifestyle of touring up and down the country, traveling around the world and having some mad adventures. Neil helped to set up and run the Plastic Raygun record label in Cardiff with a bunch of other musically creative people. So we used that outlet to release our newly found music skills on 12inch. The nostalgic part of me misses those days of sheer excitement and delight as you put a heavy weight test pressing of your tune onto a Technics 1200 platter and watch the needle follow the groove of the noises you’ve have created. Releasing our music was key in taking our DJing to the next level and making a name for our selves on a global stage.

We only realised the sheer power of releasing music when we had our 1st gig, in Spain.

We were taken by the promoters into the depths of southern España and approached an area of darkness, which was being cut into by massive lasers. We were led through the crowds into a packed area and heard our tune ‘The Drop” being played by one of the other DJs. We were pretty chuffed with that.

The promoter didn’t stop there and dragged us up to the much bigger main stage and took us out to where the decks were. In front of us was half a football pitch packed with thousands and thousands of people, (plus all the dancing bodies behind them in the darkness), going completely nuts.

We were headlining. This was pretty much down to one tune. If you take out all the effort, hard work and blagging it’s pretty amazing to think of the opportunities that a bunch of sounds, that you’ve sequenced,

My dad also bought a video camera in the days when if you pointed it at people they’d stand perfectly still, so I grew up making silly movies with friends and shooting important documentaries covering things such as ‘The building of the new conservatory’. With that passion of filming (and desire to shoot something other than family diy) I moved to London and started working and training at the BBC, building up my editing and camera skills.

This led to going self- employed and combining my skills working on music videos and other creative visual projects.

So now I spend my time trying to fit in producing and directing videos, working on several music projects including an album with a female vocalist as Rococo Nice and still trying to produce the perfect bassline. None of this really comes close to traveling around the world with your best mate, playing good music, going to amazing parties, seeing parts of the planet you may have never travelled to and meeting all sorts of lovely people. view more watch video

Carine Brancowitz spent her childhood in the woods of the family castle in the center of France, devoting her time to music and painting. At 16, she moved to Paris and studied illustration, screen printing & lithography at the School of Arts & Graphics industries, Ecole Estienne. She started her career in 1996 as a junior artistic director in a parisian fashion trends communication agency. In 2001 she decided to be a freelance graphic designer, and in 2007 she changed directions and started illustration. It is within the limits imposed by the choice of a simple and minimal tool (biro) that Carine Brancowitz drawings take shape. The result is a series of works that combine the purity and passion of adolescent anxiety, an obsessive attention to detail, the uncluttered elegance of lines, and the severity of the compositions. view more

They glowered at me; their beady eyes pointing in my direction as if to say, “Aren’t I the biggest motherfuckers you’ve ever seen?” They were so huge other tits could orbit around them. If these bazookas could be some kid from school, they’d be the playground bullies. I hated them.

I couldn’t meet them eye-to-eye.

I’d never been a prude but these communal gatherings, where we were expected to pop our boobs

out and feed our babies whilst everyone gawped, just didn’t cut it with me. I’m all for doing away with chemically engineered milk and celebrating motherhood, but this going back to basics ‘in unison’ malarkey seemed like an excuse to flash: an exhibitionist’s haven.

It was bad enough that her boobs were big, but boy were their tanks full. Milk serenaded the crowd, sprouting out of each hard nipple like a garden hose. I had to duck out of the way in case she got my

baby in the eye. And did she even apologise? Fat chance. She was too busy lapping up the attention from the other mothers who were oohing and ahhing with awe, the way my husband does whenever a fast automobile beyond our price range zooms into our view. These fellas were obviously the Rolls Royce of breastsmanship.

Mine were tragically comic by contrast. Next to hers my breasts were like two aspirin tablets on

an iron board. My nipples pointed down, hanging their heads in shame, useless except for the day they’d serve as knee warmers. Two deflated balloons. If gravity-defying breasts were too much to ask for, why then couldn’t I have had some that produced milk? I would’ve challenged her to a race; see who could squirt the farthest.

The studio approaches through research and collaborative brainstorming wherein ideas are discussed and reworked until the team emerges with a non-linear approach, adhering to the convition that good ideas can come from unlikely places. ITALY Pietro Ruffo’s paintings, drawings and sculptural installations reflect his intense social and moral concerns. The large ‘maps’ which trace the cultural and military influence of some of the world’s largest imperial powers appears also in the artist s choice of techniques.

Technical drawing and geographical maps are elaborated further with freehand drawing, installations achieved with highly technical materials and an intensely manual practice. Last year, the themes of colonialism and the desire of liberty led Ruffo to develop a project named The rise of liberalist thought in the U.S.A. through the figure of Isaiah Berlin, an Oxford Professor considered to be one of the strongest exponents of liberalism in the 20th century.

Pietro Ruffo was born in 1978 in Rome, Italy, where he later studied architecture.

Recent exhibitions include: MAD, Museum of Art and Design, New York; TEA, Tenerife Espacio de Las Artes, Islas Canarias Spain; Schรถndeling Kunstverein-Langenhagen, Germany; MAXXI Museum of Art of the XXI century, Rome, Italt; MACRO, Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome, Italy; in M.A.R Museum of Ravenna, Italy; La Pescheria Museum of Contemporary Art, Pesaro, Italy. In 2005, Ruffo travelled to Beslan, Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, Russian Federation, to work with children who survived the Chechen rebels massacre in their local school. Ruffo also worked on other public projects, including a sculptural proposal for Ground Zero in New York, a special project at the psychiatric hospital in Colmar, France, and various art workshops with children in disadvantaged situations.

Morning Breath is Doug Cunningham and Jason Noto.

In 1996, the duo worked together on skateboard designs at Think Skateboards in San Francisco. Here they discovered they had similar tastes and influences, many of which were associated with late 70s and early 80s sub cultural trends, including everything from sniffing glue and punk rock, to racking paint and hip hop.

In 2002, Cunningham and Noto formalized their partnership with the creation of Morning Breath, in Brooklyn, NY. Operating out of this creative studio, the duo’s collaborations have since grown beyond skateboard graphics to include music packaging, gaming, advertising, publishing, apparel, poster design and more.

Both Cunningham and Noto pursue individual creative outlets as well, ones which have seen them exhibit at galleries across America.

In all their work, both artists continually strive for a balance of art, design and advertising. gallery
