Whilst on tour
with the British Army in Afghanistan, photographer Bran Symondson became captivated by the private lives and remarkable contradictions of the life of the Afghan National policeman (A.N.P). Bran’s extraordinary photographs from within their compounds reveal the secret side of men bound together emotionally and sexually. Returning as a commissioned photographer, Bran’s photographs represent a side of the conflict that has remained completely untold until now. For the first time, an exhibition of his remarkable work will be on show, centering around images that lay bare a unique perspective on the current conflict. Intimate relationships are prominent in Bran’s work, which shows the strong bonds these men share. In a culture where women are hidden away in compounds, men turn to each other for comfort and sexual gratification. READ MORE

Somerset House played host to the work of illustrator René Gruau, who was responsible for some of the most iconic beauty images of the 20th century. Having penned around 80,000 illustrations throughout his career, his fruitful forty-year relationship with the house of Christian Dior. Italian-born René Gruau’s artistic talent merited him publication at the age of 14, and by the time he had reached adulthood, his illustrations had been published in leading magazines worldwide. He was hired by designers including Pierre Balmain, Cristobal Balenciaga, Elsa Schiaperelli and Hubert de Givenchy, giving life to their haute couture clothing and expanding their popularity with his captivating illustrations. But it was Gruau’s work with the house of Christian Dior that caused the most impact. In 1947, he was appointed artistic director for advertising and worked closely with Dior. Together they formed the ‘New Look’; partially a result of Dior’s designs, and partially a result of Gruau’s combined interpretation and upgrading of old-style graphic illustration. READ MORE

“The World is watching you”, a whole re-design was made by Nike. Made by the design studio Hort along with the help of Michael Spoljaric (from Nike), typography on t-shirts, to a huge billboards to announce the event. The whole thing got even more important with the creation of four shoe boxes for each Nike Store of the different hoods of Manhattan (Harlem, NYC, Bronx and Queens). All these reminds us a thing, NYC is probably the greatest city in the world, we feel a special influent from Jay-Z’s video Empire State of mind. READ MORE

While they were down there, they opportunity to put together a video giving a little history and background to the brand. Oakley is a company that does a billion dollars a year in sales, has stores all over the world, and has created some of the most iconic eyewear for generations‌ Not many people know that Oakley started out by making BMX grips. $36 million museum designed to reflect the Spanish painter’s surreal style. Some of Salvador Dali’s most famous paintings have a new home in Florida. The Dali museum was officially opened on Tuesday in St. Petersburg with Cristina, Duchess of Palma de Mallorca and the daughter of Spain’s King and Queen, cutting the ribbon. The new building houses the largest collection of Dali’s work outside of Spain with 96 oil paintings and over 2,000 other pieces of his art. It is twice the size of the old museum, a converted warehouse, which opened in 1982. READ MORE

Andreco was born in Rome, but lived in others cities in Italy and Europe. Since 1999 he is researching on different topics as anatomy, biology, urbanism, ecology and the symbolic and ritual world. He attributes to the internal organs a symbolic messages, inventing new symbols. Andreco uses many techniques to represent his art, from public installations to videos or large size paintings and drawings. READ MORE
New Jersey, USA Barbara Kruger was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1945. After attending Syracuse University, the School of Visual Arts, and studying art and design with Diane Arbus at Parson’s School of Design in New York, Kruger obtained a design job at CondÊ Nast Publications. Working for Mademoiselle Magazine, she was quickly promoted to head designer. Later, she worked as a graphic designer, art director, and picture editor in the art departments at House and Garden, Aperture, and other publications. This background in design is evident in the work for which she is now internationally renowned. She layers found photographs from existing sources with pithy and aggressive text that involves the viewer in the struggle for power and control that her captions speak to. In their trademark black letters against a slash of red background,
some of her instantly recognizable slogans read “I shop therefore I am,” and “Your body is a battleground.” Much of her text questions the viewer about feminism, classicism, consumerism, and individual autonomy and desire, although her black-and-white images are culled from the mainstream magazines that sell the very ideas she is disputing. As well as appearing in museums and galleries worldwide, Kruger’s work has appeared on billboards, buscards, posters, a public park, a train station platform in Strasbourg, France, and in other public commissions. She has taught at the California Institute of Art, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the University of California, Berkeley. She lives in New York and Los Angeles. VIEW MORE

Kenny Scharf The legendary Kenny Scharf’s latest works, an exhibition entitled ‘NATURAFUTURA’. The large scale paintings are inspired by Scharf’s coastal studio in Bahia, Brazil.
As you can see from the new series of paintings, Scharf takes his years as a longtime rainforest activist and mirrors unique interpretations of human’s pollution and destruction of natural environments. And with the donuts, the canvases reflect Scharf’s trademark wit and pop sense. READ MORE

eciding on Jazz Musicians as subject matter was a natural choice for me, as I have been interested in Jazz since I was a teenager. Looking for reference was of primary importance, buying books was a pleasure, then deciding how to portray and in what settings to place the characters in was very important. So, conceptually there are blues singers with country settings and some of their history applied in the paintings, as opposed to the jazz musicians, which are more abstract and in modern urban settings. Leadbelly, I think speaks for itself. Writing about this all seems very logical; however a lot of what I do is instinctual as I am working. So although it has been conceptualized in advance, often aspects develop as I work and in the end instinct meets intellect.

Muddy Waters
The Muddy Waters painting for instance shows the chain gang, which in his time was commonplace in the south, and he did do time, so this was part of his personal history.
John Doe’s Gig The blonde curly haired man in the bowtie is an anonymous figure; the title is “John Doe’s Gig”. I was thinking the era of F. Scott Fitzgerald. After developing
the character’s face, I needed an unusual hairdo. I’ve kept a scrap file, over the years, as most artists do and had torn the top of a head of an old fashion photo years before, and that was the basis for that hairstyle.
Coltrane
The Coltrane portrait is the second version of this head. I had done a smaller slightly different version for Playboy Magazine, in which they had asked for a portrait in the style of Francis Bacon. I’ve always admired Bacons work so this was not a hard chore. The curving green shape in front of the profile is a signature form in his work, as well as the framing devise suggesting a room as well as a cage. So I repainted it for myself, making some adjustments.

Miles Davis With the Miles Davis piece, I wanted to get a variety of players in the picture, Miles, Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey and a younger trumpeter. The centerpiece is Miles, disembodied and slightly remote, Sonny had to be an important element but not competing too much with Miles as an image, I thought of the German painter “ Pencke�. Although I don’t care that much for his paintings, he is famous for painting figures upside down, albeit in expressionist form, so that was the answer. Stitt is central but upside down so the focus remains on Miles with a younger trumpeter perhaps paying homage.
John Lee Hooker
John Lee Hooker is another example of mixing reality with artifice, he is recording in the open air with the workers shacks in the background, but it could also be a studio set or a theatre backdrop. And, as it is somewhat flattened out with little perspective, this could be the case.

Charlie Parker & Billie Holiday The Charlie Parker & Billie Holiday painting is a somewhat dreamlike visual with a touch of the history of the inner city Bebop days of the 1940’s. It also features a leaping Lionel Hampton, (who admittedly) was not bebop. It plays with angles and design elements almost like a stage set.

Rich tones with depth are something I play around with constantly, although when I look at work I did a decade ago, there is a palette that is consistent, I guess it’s always hard to shake those favorite colours� view more

Raw, the group — which maintains a blog about its actions — was behind the “laser graffiti” protest in which activists projected images of Blu’s mural onto its whitewashed former site. This fascination is particularly noticeable in their largeformat framed color photographs. As objects, these lavish volumes really come closest to the artists’ intentions or rather their passion. The viewer can feel intensely how Daniel and Geo Fuchs use their camera to collect. However, they do not view these extremely disparate collections in a conventional way, instead they see archiving, i.e., ordering certain things that interest them as photogenic landscapes. Their approach is downright scientific and their technical brilliance and meticulousness reinforce their innermost intention, to conserve the world as completely as possible in their attention to detail.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off “The house is for sale”
Hughes wrote the screenplay in less than a week and shot the film – on a budget of $6 million – over several months in late 1985. Featuring many famous Chicago landmarks, the film was Hughes’ love letter to the city: “I really wanted to capture as much of Chicago as I could. Not just in the architecture and landscape, but the spirit.” On June 11, 1986, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off became one of the top grossing films of the year and was enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike. The famous 5,300 sq/ft, 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom home is located at 370 Beech St, Highland Park, Illinois amongst a wooded one acre lot. The home is known as the Ben Rose home (or Ben Rose Auto Museum) and was built by architects A. James Speyer and David Haid in 1953. It was owned and lived in by Rose up until his death in 2004, when his wife Francis lived there with a caregiver until her death earlier in the year. In the film, the house belongs to Bueller’s best friend Cameron Frye’s father and housed the red 1961 Ferrari 250 GTO California that Beuller and Frye joyride through Chicago. WATCH VIDEO
