When did your babies fi rst sleep through the night? What seemed to do the trick? Help!

“After approximately 1000 years and there is no trick! In all seriousness, they started to sleep in 5-hour stretches occasionally around 6 - 7 months old, and it depended on how long they could make it without needing to eat, best I could tell. They were preemies born at 34 weeks and they weighed four pounds at birth. It took awhile.”

“I don't remember age but I know it was well before one year. Plenty of play time during the day, naps, a bedtime routine including lowering the lights, quiet reading together, some nights a bath ... and after a while of sleeping through, each one had a phase where they'd wake in the middle of the night. After a few nights of it, we took them to the doctor for a check up, then took the advice to let them cry it out. It was a rough couple of nights, but it didn't last a week and they were back to sleeping through. And we were back to sleeping through also!"

“My baby slept well from the start. Six-hour stretches for a newborn. But around 4 - 6 months old, he was the crankiest baby at bedtime. He was still napping normally, but bedtime was hard because he'd be up and down all night. Around 8 months old, he fi nally started sleeping through the night again. We reestablished a bedtime routine where there was bath, bottle, snuggles, bed. He's 21 months now and doesn't love going to bed, but he's out most of the nights. There's always gonna be some nights that are a struggle. Also making sure your baby is awake the proper hours during the day and sleeping enough during the day helps as well. If the baby is up all day with very few or short naps, then they'll be overtired and bedtime will be a hassle. But on the fl ipside, if you let a 12 month old sleep for two naps that are each four hours (so eight hours total) when they only need four hours of daytime sleep, then they won't be tired and bedtime will feel more like naptime. I had my son taking a "nap" at bedtime around 6 months old. He was sleeping too much during the day and sleeping in too late. So at 8 p.m. I'd go to put him to bed and like clockwork every night he'd be up at midnight ready to play. That was a hard one to break.”

“Six weeks. A warm, lavender bath at night to get the energy out with play and then relaxation. Rock to sleep with nursing at 8 p.m. and then I would wake her at midnight to feed her and she would go right back to sleep until I woke her at 7 a.m.”

“My 17 month old just started sleeping through since we started going outside all day and wearing him out and he now is only on one nap from 12 - 2 p.m. My 7 month old sleeps through most nights until 5 a.m. and my oldests have slept through since they were 2-ish (they are now 4 and 9). My 4 year old sometimes gets up to pee, but other than that we are now three down, one to go. I will love 9 p.m. - 8 a.m. eventually!!!"
