Topic Overview Introduction Melbourne is a multicultural city with vibrant old architecture, a full of old soul music, and a high fashion sense. The concept for this guidebook is to bring joy and vibe back to the past. The book potentially aims for the activities or representations that are recognizable in the 19th century. My motive to bring the reader to a variety of categories to haunt vintage places in Melbourne. The book will categorize places into 3 groups such as fashion, music, and bars. Each category will contain 3 unique stores that be able to make the reader experience a different atmosphere. Since this guidebook has included many places and pages, I’m convinced that the A4 square format book is ideal. Moreover, I want to print on a rough texture paper stock to provoke the feeling of an old/vintage book.
Goals To explore hidden, vintage spots in Melbourne. Be able to experience the different eras of fashion, music, and entertainment. To promote the vibrant city of Melbourne.
Communication This book will provide all the information of the best and unique places in Melbournen including open hours, location and prices. It is appropriate for readers who want to undergo the 20th century experience.

Target Audience
Alfredo Male, 19 | International Student
The target audiences are Gen Z and millennials who are living in Melbourne. They would have an old soul and willing to discover what their parents/grandparents experience. Moreover, all genders are welcome and for those who love to try different eras in terms of fashion and entertainment.
Alfredo is an international student from Spain. He loves music, specifically in the ‘80s soul and rock music. He is a big fan of U2 and Queen. Alfredo also loves to collect all the records from the 80s, including vinyl records and cassette tapes. Moreover, he also loves drinking with his mates at the bar and playing games together. He loves “Street Fighter” and “Pixel” games.
“
“
I have a young body but my soul is quite old.
Catherine Female, 24 | Fashion Designer Catherine is a fashion designer based in Melbourne. She likes to try a different style of fashion. She loves wearing vintage clothes so much that she has a big wardrobe of just various cloth designs from the 50s – the 90s. She also loves to collect old-fashioned dresses from different vintage shops, tailor them to trendy look dresses, and then sell them online.
“
“
Fashion defines my personality and emotion.
5
Visual Research
The research aims for a warm and vibrant colour. My intention is to make this book looks welcoming and yet exciting. I want to mix the photography and illustration together in order to make this book look more aesthetic and fun.
6
Visual Research
My visual for this research is to use the collage technique. I think collage is ideal because I aim to design a vintage book and want it to look vibrant and exciting. Moreover, this technique also provokes the sense of nostalgia that I am targetting.
7
Visual Research
These are my inspiration for my book structure. I have researched some techniques of the DIY book and stitches. However, my book is going to contain a lot of pages and categories. So, there is a potential that I’m going to structure my book as tab pages because it’s easy to navigate the readers to each category.
8
Mindmap
I did this mindmap to gather all the ideas I have when I heard the word “vintage”. After did some potential vintage places in Melbourne, I have minimized them into 3 categories such as clothes shop, vinyl record store, and arcade and bars. I also listed the store as well as the location of each category, so it is easy for me to do site visiting.

Are you sick of your grandparent’s exaggeration about how good was their music, their fashion sense, and their beers? Well, SAY LESSS… Welcome to Melbourne, a city of vibrant culture and human races. Melbourne is well-known as a fashionable and old soul city. There are many hidden gems in Melbourne that this guidebook is going to expose the best spots to entertain and undergo the 20th-century era. Although you live in the 21st century, you still have a chance to experience the 20th. Dressing a long floral dress elegantly as your grandma had worn OR wearing bold colours and pattern loose shirt tucked in high waist pants and boots like your grandpa had styled handsomely in the ‘60s. Listening to the Beatles and sing along with your parents. And nothing more the 80s than grab a beer and play classic arcade games with your siblings and mates. Grab this guidebook and explore the most retro locations that you could ever imagine of. Time is ticking forwards, but nothing wrong with being stuck in the past. Explorers, don’t get bored at home. There are many places waiting for you to visit.
The decor is inspired by the bright lights and opulent streets of Hong Kong, with Asian flavours also on the menu. Try the ‘pretty green’ pizza with avocado, kimchi, pine nuts, tabasco, basil, sundried tomatoes, corn and lime, or a side of lotus root chips.
One of Melbourne’s original vintage stores, established in the late 1980s, Out of the Closet hand-pick their products for quality and authenticity.
Bartronica Bartronica is a basement bar featuring original, rare arcade games, craft beer, cocktails and a New York style beer garden. Bartronica has slots, pinball machines, a racing car simulator, tabletop and console games.
RetroStar Vintage Clothing RetroStar Vintage Clothing proudly houses over 10,000 items of the latest – and oldest – globallysourced, quality, vintage clothing and accessories. It specialises in the 1940s through to the 1990s which are sourced from around the world.
The cocktail menu is inspired by iconic 1980s culture with drink options including ‘Girls on Film’ and ‘Risky Business’. Try the ‘Kong’ cocktail with whisky, banana liqueur and chocolate bitters, a burnt cinnamon stick and Tetris-shaped ice.
The vibrant atmosphere and extensive stock of RetroStar Vintage makes it one of the most amazing and individual stores in Melbourne. Tucked amongst the laneways in the Flinders Lane quarter it is one of Melbourne’s hidden secrets.
Pixel Alley Pixel Alley pays homage to the art of retro games, adorning its walls with pixel-art murals from illustrator Justine McAllister. The beer on-tap is Bastard Son Pale Ale, each pint of which comes with a $1 game token. The tinnie selection is top notch, too, from the classic Melbourne Bitter to Pirate Life and even Pabst, if you feel like going full on college freshman.
Vintage Sole Vintage Sole aims to bridge the gap between eccentric retro and on trend vintage clothing, footwear, and accessories. By sourcing product from all over the world, the store maintains a diverse offering of items including: denim jackets, ‘60s dresses, ‘70s flares, Levi’s 501s, corduroy pinafores, overalls, boots, bags, sneakers, tees, men’s shirts, cowboy boots, and leather jackets.
The game-inspired cocktails are next level, including Pacman Bubble Tea (lychee vodka, lime and ginger beer) and the Konkey Dong. As for wine, it’s a short and sweet offering.
Vintage Sole also operates as an ethically grounded alternative to fast fashion whilst still providing customers with a highly curated, season appropriate selection of items spanning the ‘50s to the ‘90s.
With more than 15,000 titles in stock, Basement Discs specialises in pop, rock, country, folk, jazz, R&B and soul, but can also cater to other tastes. The team loves sharing its passion and knowledge of music and consistently aims to stock the finest and most interesting range possible. Vinyl Space Vinyl Space has a wide variety of second hand and new vinyl records and CD’s. A comprehensive collection of records, sourced both locally and internationally, sit in the shop’s cabinets. Stock ranges from the usual record-store staples – Dylan, Bowie, Zappa and Springsteen – to more unique hip-hop, Afro and soundtrack titles. Most is second-hand, though the number of new pressings is growing by the week. There’s also a heap of other musical goodies for sale, including thousands of eclectic CDs, books and cassettes. Wax Museum Good chunks of the store are dedicated to hiphop, both foreign and local, as well as soul, funk, jazz, beats and electronic styles. Paired with a generous lashing of the weird (think Anime soundtracks, ambient experiments and sound art) and you’ve got a shop stock worth writing home about. The Wax Museum label has also been making moves, including early gold from Inkswel, local output by Dyl Thomas, Aoi and Splendour – right through to recent contributions by Plutonic Lab, Guilty Simpson and Count Bass D. 14

I have looked up for several typefaces to suit a vintage theme. I want the title front page to look playful and yet simple and legible. Therefore, I decided to choose a decorative typeface.

I intend to choose a legible and simple design typeface from google font for the interior and body text. I have two options to experiment with: san serif and serif typeface. Moreover, I want to choose the typeface with an extensive font family because it is easy for me to create a hierarchy in the book. 16
Colour Experiment
I try different colour swatches, and most of them mainly focus on warm colours because my book will be vintage vibe and welcoming. Moreover, I want to stick to simplicity. I only use four colors: three colors will differentiate each category, and the bright color will be the front and back page because it’s easy to draw audiences’ attention.
To conclude, I decided to select this swatch because although there is a combination of warm and cool colours, it still provokes a welcoming and vintage feeling. I want to apply pastel colours because my book is mostly about entertaining places and those colours make them look fun and yet satisfying

1st attempt First try, I aim to play my map look playful and bold, so I did a hand-drawing by using a big stroke brush. However, it turns out too busy and messy.
Final attempt
2nd attempt After that, I decided to change the line stroke and make it tidy. I tried to get the most detail as possible. I also try to include the small lane and so on. Furthermore, this map only illustrates one location because I plan to have a map on every page. The result looks a bit rough and careless.
For the final attempt, I jump into illustrator and use the pen tool to get it more precise. Moreover, I changed the line stroke and yet, include every location in one map to get more space for the image and the detail for other pages. Moreover, I cut out the small lane and keep the main street to look more simple and easy to navigate.

The first time experimenting with the layout, I only put one image and combine it with the illustrations. There is much negative space, and the design layout is boring. Moreover, the map has a thick line stroke and too rough.

Since there was a lot of blank space in the layout; therefore, my second try is to insert the image of the front store then combine it a bit with collage and illustrations. However, it still feels a bit missing and empty and doesn’t correspond. Also, the colour is dull, and the text is difficult to read.

I aim to play around more about collage by cutting images from the photos I took. As it can be seen on the right page, I tried to overlay the same colour as the entire page; however, it turns out a bit messy. As well as the text, I sought to use an italic serif font, but it is hard to read. On the left page, I tried to insert a map and all the information in one page, but it doesn’t seem to work out, and there is too much negative space compared to the other side of the page.

Paper Stock Front and Back Cover I have decided to pick a different paper stock. I chose a rough texture paper for the front and back cover, and for the interior, I picked uncoated recycled paper. The reason I selected these papers because they can provoke a vintage feeling which the book aims for. I intended to print on different thicknesses of paper. The front and back cover is thicker than the interior because it is easy for readers to flip the page.

The game-inspired cocktails are next level, including Pacman Bubble Tea (lychee vodka, lime and ginger beer) and the Konkey Dong. As for wine, it’s a short and sweet offering.

Good chunks of the store are dedicated to hip-hop, both foreign and local, as well as soul, funk, jazz, beats and electronic styles. Paired with a generous lashing of the weird (think Anime soundtracks, ambient experiments and sound art) and you’ve got a shop stock worth writing home about.

Inspiration
I have looked up a retro theme for my webpage and app design. My selective stores are based on vintage theme stores in Melbourne. The design of the vintage is eye-catching and unique. For this inspiration, I aim to play with colours, especially with high contrast colours and monochromatic colors to correspond to my guidebook.

Love the overlay colour on the image. Create a high contrast witht the text and logo in the front. Using different typeface to create hierarchy. Overlay the menu on the image by lower the opacity and it works well.
The consistency of using colour pallete. The menu is too big and draw too much attention. Like the contrast of the colour and a variety of using typefaces and illustrations in the menu bar.
• •
The chosen typeface is hard to create hierarchy because it’s too bold The website is too plain and boring Don’t have much interesting interaction nor effect.

Create hamburger bar to chuck all of the menu The images are bigger and more cohesive with the menu bar
• •
The images are compressed smaller and add more text which is unnecessary. Good idea by adding more icon like narrow which is easy to navigate the user to find the information The navigator bar is overlay the page which isn’t really appealing.

User Persona
For the target audience, I want to remain the same as my guidebook, the passionate and adventurous explorers who love the vintage aesthetic. As nowadays, the user using the internet is skyrocketing, I want to insist on the users who are frustrating finding fun spots in Melbourne. The user persona “Galik Rolvinski” has been created to represent the users’ struggle seeking a place to explore, precisely a vintage aesthetic site. Moreover, the website also aims to help introverted people be more extroverted and share their stories with others.

It is challenging to work on different document size ratio. For my guidebook, I worked on a square format (1x1). However, for the website development, I have to on rectangle format 16x9 vertically and horizontally. Most importantly, I want to maintain most of the same design elements as my guidebook as it has images as a hero of the design.

Low Fidelity Wireframes
There are rough sketches on photoshop. That could give me some rough idea to create and visualize the website. The website is image-based. I want to use all the photography I took from each location and edit them into vintage filter look. The aim is to make the website easy for user to navigate and straightforward. There are a lot of effect that I aim to run on the website, however, I doubt on myself if I could do it in a certain amount of time since I’m new to the program, Adobe Xd.

The website aims to help the users easy to explore the vintage stores in Melbourne. It will provide the information of each store, including opening hours, store information, location, and contact. Moreover, there will be a variety of images of each store to insist the users sense the place. Also, there will have suggestions of each place to promote or link from one place to another to help users to explore more from the website. Page count: 20

According to my guidebook, I made an individual map for each category. However, for the website, I combined every store into one map page. It’s scrollable and be able to find every store on the website. There are 3 different icons represent the different category. The users can click on each icon to reveal the location and name that they want to go. Once they click on the name they want to go to, the website will navigate them to the store page to get more information.
