To reach it you’ll need to make a 162-step climb (there is no elevator), but you’ll be amply rewarded with an entirely unique perspective on the city. Continued from p. 41 PROLIFICALLY POTTER In the Potterverse, the most striking recurrence isn’t a person, place, or prop, but rather “seven”—the powerful magical number author J.K. Rowling injected liberally into her (seven) novels. Players on a Quidditch team, Horcruxes, Weasley kids… seven, seven, seven…the list goes on. And now that legendary numeral has come full circle with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: the Tony-winning play has officially entered its (drumroll please) 7th spellbinding year on Broadway!

The fourth longest-running play—and most successful non-musical in Broadway history— this theatrical sequel to the original books and films has conjured countless accolades for its fast and furious storyline following the Time-Turner exploits of Harry Potter’s youngest son, Albus (Alex Serino), and Draco Malfoy’s only child, Scorpius (Erik Christopher Peterson). From their first-year encounter on the Hogwarts Express, the two young wizards run impulsively amok, pinballing into the past and future, and unleashing a string of familiar cameos, killer special effects, and one helluva plot twist. As Matthew James Thomas (the show’s current Harry Potter)

said in a recent interview, “There’s so much to be found here…you’ll be glad for the unforgettable, great show it is.”

OUTSIDE IN The two-word mantra you’ll take with you from 2024’s Tony-winning musical The Outsiders is “Stay Gold.” If you know the novel—make that, if the book was your bible growing up—you entered the theatre with the words etched in your heart. Such is the enduring power of S.E. Hinton’s 1967 rhetoric, in which the 16-year-old girl from Tulsa, Oklahoma sculpted a composite school picture of her classmates to come up with a volatile scenario between two rival gangs: the working-class Greasers and their socioeconomic opposites, the savage id-driven Socs.

The nucleus of the story is narrator/poet Ponyboy Curtis (Brody Grant), the youngest of the Greasers who, along with brothers Darrel (Brent Comer) and Sodapop (Jason Schmidt) form a nontraditional family unit.

But it’s Ponyboy’s best friend, emotionally battered Johnny Cade (Sky Lakota-Lynch), who ultimately drives the drama. The climactic rumble may be the thing, bloody and muddy, but it’s by no means everything.

WICKED, WICKED WAYS Even if you’ve been seduced by the movie version of Wicked, I assure you nothing comes close to experiencing Winnie Holzman’s (book) and Stephen Schwartz’s (score) re-visionary musical live on Broadway. Here, against one fantastical backdrop after another, a vibrant company led by Lenicia Kebede (Elphaba) and Allie Trimm (Glinda) play out the tale of Shiz University coeds whose initial animosity dissolves once their differences morph into a fairytale friendship. The two are, after all, witches, whose Ozian playground is a far cry from that of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful

Wizard of Oz” and 1939’s classic film adaption.

As for the production’s principals, the diverse lineup gives theatregoers multiple reasons to rejoicify. Tony nominees Natasha Yvette Williams and Brad Oscar are deliciously duplicitous as headmistress Madame Morrible and The Wizard, while Ms. Kebede totally “defies gravity” as Broadway’s first full-time black Elphaba.

Equally impressive in the role of Elphaba’s kid sister, wheelchair-user Nessarose, is real-life disabled actress Jenna Bainbridge.

BIO BRILLIANCE Superstardom is something Michael Jackson wore as effortlessly as he did his signature fedora.

His perfectionism, however, is another story, and something MJ the Musical points out minutes into the show.

The opening number is “Beat It,” already in progress when Jackson arrives and slides seamlessly into place, stopping short before the song ends. “Keith, you keep stepping all over my vocals. Can you pull back a little?” Polite, kind, and soft-spoken, he gets his message across because, make no mistake, he is the King of Pop. With a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn

Nottage, the jukebox score for MJ never bows to cliché, so well in fact, that you accept triplethreat performer Elijah Rhea Johnson as Jackson the moment he strikes his first MJ pose. Having joined the cast just over two years ago, the Mindless Behavior alum is electrifying as he channels Jackson’s famous vocals, dance moves, and gestures, adapted for the show by its Tony-winning director/ choreographer, Christopher Wheeldon.

“In playing MJ, I’m living out my childhood dream,” says Johnson. “I’m so grateful to be a part of something that resonates with—and touches—so many people.”

SHEER GENIE-US Artfully finessed from Disney’s 1992 animated film, Aladdin is a five-star Broadway favorite, boasting multigenerational appeal and enough voltage to fuel a sizeable metropolis like, say, the fictional city of Agrabah that lives, breathes, and beckons from the stage of the New Amsterdam Theatre. It’s here that Genie (Michael James Scott) welcomes theatregoers to his home turf, “where enchantment runs rampant,” and ushers in the action, starting with the town’s technicolor marketplace—a setting that proves to be temptation central for the dashing young thief Aladdin (Adi Roy)

and his crew, Omar (Jacob Ben-Shmuel), Kassim (Colt Prattes), and Babkak (Michael Schimmele). No shortage of chutzpah here—or in the Sultan’s palace where the vizier Jafar (Dennis Stowe) spins a diabolical plot alongside his sycophantic minion, Iago (Don Darryl Rivera).

Ultimately, machinations give way to magic in the Cave of Wonders, where Genie cuts loose with the mega-spectacular “Friend Like Me,” before arranging a flying carpet date night for Aladdin and Princess Jasmine (Sonia Balsara), who soar above the audience performing the Oscar- and Grammy-winning “A Whole New World.” Serendipity.

history goes back really, really far so kudos to co-creators Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez, who are no doubt turning their lust-filled eyes toward the number 10 spot.

Have you no shame? And that would be a big no, because if they did, there’d be no Book of Mormon musical and…where was I?) Digression complete.

This Tony-winning fish-out-of-water saga assigns freshly minted Mormon missionaries Price (Kevin Clay) and Cunningham (Cody Jamison Strand) to a seedy Ugandan village where conversion seems unlikely what with blasphemy running amok and a one-eyed war lord hanging around. The one bright spot is Nabulungi (Keziah John Paul), who’s more than willing to go Mormon if it gets her to “Sal Tlay Ka Siti” (translation: Salt Lake City).

In summary, it’s a show about doorbells and friendship and frogs and religious cameos and a “Spooky Mormon Hell Dream” and other awesome stuff you wish you knew about sooner.

costumes, puppetry, and scenic design, to the glorious “Circle of Life” procession of zebras, gazelles, birds, giraffes, and a ginormous elephant named Bertha, it’s clear The Lion King is no ordinary Broadway musical. Dramatic, funny, scary, and heartwarming, this is a very, very, special show. No wonder tickets sell out fast—as they have for going on three decades—or that parents return with their children to share the show that turned them into theatre lovers when they were kids.

The show features an international cast, several of whom come from South Africa, including Lindiwe Dlamini who’s been with The Lion King since its pre-Broadway premiere. A member of the production’s multifaceted ensemble along with her husband, Bongi Duma, Dlamini also understudies the hyena Shenzi. Still, despite her longevity with the company, she’s yet to tire of being an integral part of Simba’s journey from cub to crown, through obstacles, challenges, joys, and love. “Every day, every performance is exciting and never, ever, the same,” she says.
