The project is located in the heart of a tropical mountain region, between Taipei and the Pacific, in the northeast of Taiwan. There, the geomorphology is extremely complex. On its very steep slopes, the heavy rainfall causes large-scale erosions. Human installations and infrastructures are thus exposed to constant risks of flooding, rockslides or landslides. However, this region has been inhabited and crossed for centuries. From the beginning of the 19th century, the network of aboriginal trails was supplemented by the great paths of Tamsui-Kavalan, taken by Mandarins, missionaries and naturalists from all over the world, who came to study rare plants and insects. Then, at the beginning of the 20th century, a colossal network of railways was built by the Japanese colonial administration to transport the abundant coal produced in the surrounding mines to the large ports of Keelung and Taipei. At the end of the 20th century, the mines closed. The enhancement of this heritage of abandoned industrial infrastructures located in a spectacular landscape of mountains, gorges and waterfalls, becomes the main asset to revitalize a region hit by the disappearance of the coal industry.
本基地位於台灣東北角、介於太平洋與台北之間的熱帶山區。這裡的地形非常複雜，暴雨時常在斜坡上帶來大面積侵蝕，人為設施和基礎建設暴露在山洪和土石流 發生的風險之下。 數世紀以來，人們一直居住與行經於此。在十九世紀初期，原住民的獵徑被淡蘭古道覆蓋取代，提供漢人和世界各地前來的傳教士、收集稀有的植物與昆蟲的博物 學家往來其中。爾後，二十世紀初期，日治政權開啟一個龐大的鐵路網絡建設計畫，用來將周邊豐富煤礦運輸至基隆和台北的港口；直至二十世紀末期，這些礦脈 停止開採為止。 這些在壯麗山景、峽谷以及水瀑間被廢棄的工業設施具備豐厚的文化價值，並且成為礦業消失後，成為在地區域活化的關鍵資產。

除了一道白色道標線外，汽車、自行車、行人都使用同一空間，安全性不足 No space differentiation for cars, bicycles and pedestrians, except a white line
1 . 原本是一棟封閉式的ㄇ字型舊建築
AN OLD BUILDING IN AN ENCLOSED U SHAPE
移除原有的屋頂鋼瓦，但保留其鋼樑結構
Take away the roof, to keep only the steel beams structure
打除原有建築的牆面，留下柱式構造，使所有面向中庭的空間都打開
Open towards the centre of the U, desmolish the inner façades of the U, to keep only the pillars structure
清空建築內部，留下遊客服務的機能
Empty the building to keep only the reception spaces for the visitors
將廁所移至ㄇ字型建築外部 Move de restrooms outside the U
創造一道傾斜的植栽帶，並植樹木：利用高程差與植栽帶，將人使用的場域從停車場區隔開
Create a difference of level between the bicycle path and the road, with a green buffer planted with trees for distancing the parking lot

發掘出建築與後方山壁之間的中介空間
The in-between space discovered between the building and the rock cliff - 提供人們觀看後山的綠意，亦成為整體建築的背景 - provides a view on the mountain foothill in the background - 提供建築西側（後側）的自然採光 - floods with light the West wing of the building - 創造了煙囪效應，使空氣對流，創造出涼爽與通風的戶外環境 - creates a chimney effect of cooling and refreshing winds
被建築圍繞的中庭 The central patio
- 強化對建築的重要性 - gives some magnitude to the building - 轉化為主要的入口大廳、聚集、等候與休憩空間 - turns into the main entrance hall, meeting and rest space - 連結了室內外空間，使室內外空間融為一體 - links the interior and exterior, blending them - 雨水花園在下雨時能收集流水，大太陽時能調節空氣，使其降溫 - collects the run off in a water garden, which cools down the air when the sun shines again
3 . 中庭連結室內外空間，是一處新的生活核心場

一個以織物構成的新頂帳 The new roof, made of fabric
- 頂帳架構在原有的屋頂結構上 - builds on the structure of the former roof - 放鬆垂墜成弧形的頂棚，使中庭有些部分被看見，有些部分則被遮蔽 - relaxes and drops in the center, in a curb inviting to enter, both showing and hiding the interior of the patio - 頂帳下可以避雨，幾道開縫讓雨水分流成為水簾，讓水能滲透入土地，也避免暴雨對頂棚結構產生傷害 - protects from the rain while allowing successive curtains infiltrating in the ground, avoiding the devastating impact of heavy rains - 頂帳下也提供烈日下的蔽蔭，但也容許光線從開縫灑進中庭 - protects from the sun while letting it filter through several lines left in the roof, bringing natural light inside - 頂帳特殊的姿態亦將新設置的廁所庇護於其下 - covers the restrooms in a unique gesture
室內外鋪面使用一致材料，沒有門檻，方便輪椅推車等進出
An unified pavement system, without any threshold, friendly to bicycle users, people with reduced mobility and strollers
